Methods and materials for protection of sulfide glass solid electrolytes

A sulfide glass solid electrolyte sheet can be protected from reaction with moisture by a thin metal layer coating converted to a thin electrochemically functional and protective compound layer. The converted protective compound layer is electrochemically functional in that it allows for through transport of lithium ions.

Vitreous solid electrolyte sheets of Li ion conducting sulfur-based glass and associated structures, cells and methods

A lithium ion-conductive solid electrolyte including a freestanding inorganic vitreous sheet of sulfide-based lithium ion conducting glass is capable of high performance in a lithium metal battery by providing a high degree of lithium ion conductivity while being highly resistant to the initiation and/or propagation of lithium dendrites. Such an electrolyte is also itself manufacturable, and readily adaptable for battery cell and cell component manufacture, in a cost-effective, scalable manner.

Metallic glass coating material

A metallic glass coating material is composed of an alloy of Fe, B, and one of the metals Nb, Mo, Zr, or W. The ratios of Fe, B, and the metal are predetermined using machine learning predictions and high-throughput experiments. In one example, the material is an alloy of Fe, Nb, Mo and B, of the form Fe x (Nb, Mo) y B z , where x is in the range 18-28, y is in the range 35-45, and z is in the range 32-42. In another example, the material may be the alloy Fe 23 (Nb, Mo) 40 B 37 . The alloy may be doped with Zr and/or W, where the Zr and/or W comprises at most 10% of the alloy.

Post-Deployment Characterization of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Thermoset and Thermoplastic Composite Tidal Turbine Blades: Preprint

In 2021, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) supported Verdant Power with the most successful tidal energy deployment in U.S. history. Three of their tidal turbines were deployed as part of the Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy project. Initially, the three rotors were manufactured from glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites. Midway through the deployment, one rotor was replaced with one manufactured at NREL. Instead, it was infused with a novel, infusible thermoplastic resin system. Since the deployment, one epoxy rotor and one thermoplastic rotor were returned to NREL for continued materials and manufacturing research. The two rotors underwent full-scale structural testing before being sectioned and cut into specimens for a variety of manufacturing quality tests, thermos-mechanical characterization, and evaluation of material performance in marine environments, to understand the key differences between the fiberglass reinforced epoxy and Elium composites used for the respective rotors. Matrix burnoff tests showed that the Elium blades had a considerably higher fiber volume fraction compared to the epoxy blades (61% vs. 49%). Environmental aging of the specimens showed that the epoxy laminates absorbed more water over the conditioning period, however, it was determined that the Elium laminates had higher diffusion coefficients, so initially absorbed water faster. Finally, one full epoxy blade and one full Elium blade were conditioned at ambient temperatures for up to 11 months, while taking periodic mass measurements. The datasets were extrapolated out to assume a full 20 year operational life span and it was determined that the blades would not reach full saturation during that time span.

Fluidization Regime Mapping Analysis for 200 μm Glass Beads in a Circulating Fluidized Bed Riser

This paper was an executive summary for an oral presentation to be included in the conference proceedings of the 2024 Clearwater Clean Energy Conference. It includes a brief discussion of a recently developed non-dimensional map for scaling circulating fluidized bed risers using velocity and solids circulation rate ratios. Data is presented for a set of experiments conducted in NETL’s 12-inch cold flow circulating fluidized bed (CFCFB) riser with 200 micron diameter glass beads, showing a strong dependance between solids volume fraction profiles and the solids circulation rate ratio.

Post-Deployment Characterization of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Thermoset and Thermoplastic Composite Tidal Turbine Blades

In 2021, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) supported Verdant Power with the most successful tidal energy deployment in U.S. history. Three of their Gen5d 5 m turbines were deployed as part of the Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy project. Initially, the three deployed rotors were manufactured from glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites. Midway through the deployment, one rotor was replaced with one manufactured at NREL. The new rotor utilized a novel infusible thermoplastic resin system (Elium from Arkema). Electrical connectors including glass seals and methods of fabrication

An electrical connector comprises an outer shell, at least one pin, and an insulating seal. The outer shell includes at least one side wall defining a cavity and having an inner surface. The outer shell is formed from electrically conductive material. The pin is positioned within the cavity and is also formed from electrically conductive material. The insulating seal is configured to provide electrical isolation of the pin and fills the cavity between the inner surface of the side wall and the pin. The insulating seal is formed from glass doped with a transition metal oxide.

Memory effect and phase transition in a hierarchical trap model for spin glasses

Here, we introduce an efficient dynamical tree method that enables us to explicitly demonstrate the thermoremanent magnetization memory effect in a hierarchical energy landscape. Our simulation nicely reproduces the nontrivial waiting-time and waiting-temperature dependences in this nonequilibrium phenomenon. We further investigate the condensation effect, in which a small set of microstates dominates the thermodynamic behavior in the multilayer trap model. Importantly, a structural phase transition of the multilayer tree model is shown to coincide with the onset of the condensation phenomenon. Our results underscore the importance of hierarchical structure and demonstrate the intimate relation between the glassy behavior and structure of barrier trees.

Role of Local Structure in the Enhanced Dynamics of Deformed Glasses

External stress can accelerate molecular mobility of amorphous solids by several orders of magnitude. The changes in mobility are commonly interpreted through the Eyring model, which invokes an empirical activation volume. Here, we analyze constant-stress molecular dynamics simulations and propose a structure-dependent Eyring model, connecting activation volume to a machine-learned field, softness. We show that stress has a heterogeneous effect on the mobility that depends on local structure through softness. The barrier impeding relaxation reduces more for well-packed particles, which explains the narrower distribution of relaxation time observed under stress.

Reactivity in cement pastes bearing fine fraction concrete and glass from construction and demolition waste: Microstructural analysis of viability

Converting construction and demolition waste (CDW) into secondary raw materials is one of the priorities of environmental policy and circular economy strategy. This study analysed the variation in eco-efficient paste reactivity with OPC replacement ratio (5% to 10%) and hydration time (2 d, 28 d and 90 d). Three types of CDW were explored: two (calcareous and siliceous) consisting of fine (4 AH{sub 13} and C{sub 4}AcH{sub 11}, ettringite and portlandite, were the same as observed in OPC hydration. These findings attest to the scientific viability recycling such CDWs as mineral additions in eco-cement manufacture and consequently eliminating the need for stockpiling these materials at recycling/storage plants.
