Single-stage experimental evaluation of compressor blading with slots and vortex generators, part 5

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the extent that slots and vortex generators can increase the efficiency and stable operating range of highly loaded compressor stages. With slots in the rotor and stator, the stage performance both with and without vortex generators was inferior to that achieved with the unslotted blading. However, with vortex generators, stator slots, and an unslotted rotor, the stable operating range increased 25% and the stage peak efficiency increased 2.1% over the values achieved with the unslotted rotor and stator without vortex generators, at design equivalent rotor speed.

Comparison of two gas chromatograph models and analysis of binary data

The overall objective of the gas chromatograph system studies is to generate fundamental design criteria and techniques to be used in the optimum design of the system. The particular tasks currently being undertaken are the comparison of two mathematical models of the chromatograph and the analysis of binary system data. The predictions of two mathematical models, an equilibrium absorption model and a non-equilibrium absorption model exhibit the same weaknesses in their inability to predict chromatogram spreading for certain systems. The analysis of binary data using the equilibrium absorption model confirms that, for the systems considered, superposition of predicted single component behaviors is a first order representation of actual binary data. Composition effects produce non-idealities which limit the rigorous validity of superposition.

On the writing of programming systems for spacecraft computers.

Consideration of the systems designed to generate programs for the increasingly complex digital computers being used on board unmanned deep-space probes. Such programming systems must accommodate the special-purpose features incorporated in the hardware. The use of higher-level language facilities in the programming system can significantly simplify the task. Computers for Mariner and for the Outer Planets Grand Tour are briefly described, as well as their programming systems. Aspects of the higher level languages are considered.

Prediction of hail damage to aircraft.

Description of a hailstone impact simulator, a valuable laboratory apparatus which can be used for such hailstone research as the testing of prospective structural designs or generating data to compare with theory. The simulator consists of a launcher and a velocity-measuring system. It has been successfully used to obtain deformation data on flat sheets and spherical caps of various sizes impacted by hailstones at typical flight velocities. A computer program is described which adequately predicts the damage to a simple structure when impacted by a hailstone.

Active seismic experiment

The Apollo 16 active seismic experiment (ASE) was designed to generate and monitor seismic waves for the study of the lunar near-surface structure. Several seismic energy sources are used: an astronaut-activated thumper device, a mortar package that contains rocket-launched grenades, and the impulse produced by the lunar module ascent. Analysis of some seismic signals recorded by the ASE has provided data concerning the near-surface structure at the Descartes landing site. Two compressional seismic velocities have so far been recognized in the seismic data. The deployment of the ASE is described, and the significant results obtained are discussed.

Water recovery and solid waste processing for aerospace and domestic applications. Volume 1: Final report

A comprehensive study of advanced water recovery and solid waste processing techniques employed in both aerospace and domestic or commercial applications is reported. A systems approach was used to synthesize a prototype system design of an advanced water treatment/waste processing system. Household water use characteristics were studied and modified through the use of low water use devices and a limited amount of water reuse. This modified household system was then used as a baseline system for development of several water treatment waste processing systems employing advanced techniques. A hybrid of these systems was next developed and a preliminary design was generated to define system and hardware functions.

Pseudorandom noise for telemetry error rate measurement applications and limitations.

A pseudorandom noise (PRN) generator functional design has been developed which is superior to the commercially available instrument in usable bandwidth and in the closeness of fit to the gaussian probability distribution in the 'tails' of the curve. The principal disadvantage of PRN sources for bit error rate (BER) measurements is that the probability distribution is truncated in the tails. This truncation of the probability distribution results in a similar truncation of the BER curve - i.e., there is a minimum BER which can be measured, below which the only possible result is zero. The minimum nonzero BER actually computed with the PRN source developed was 0.00001 with a pseudorandom sequence of 131,071 bits. It is theoretically possible, with a longer sequence, to achieve a minimum BER of 0.000001 with the same design.

Explosive propulsion applications

The feasibility and application of an explosive propulsion concept capable of supporting future unmanned missions in the post-1980 era were examined and recommendations made for advanced technology development tasks. The Venus large lander mission was selected as the first in which the explosive propulsion concept can find application. A conceptual design was generated and its performance, weight, costs, and interaction effects determined. Comparisons were made with conventional propulsion alternatives. The feasibility of the explosive propulsion system was verified for planetology experiments within the dense atmosphere of Venus as well as the outer planets. Additionally, it was determined that the Venus large lander mission could be augmented ballistically with a significant delivery margin.

Program manual for ASTOP, an Arbitrary space trajectory optimization program

The ASTOP program (an Arbitrary Space Trajectory Optimization Program) designed to generate optimum low-thrust trajectories in an N-body field while satisfying selected hardware and operational constraints is presented. The trajectory is divided into a number of segments or arcs over which the control is held constant. This constant control over each arc is optimized using a parameter optimization scheme based on gradient techniques. A modified Encke formulation of the equations of motion is employed. The program provides a wide range of constraint, end conditions, and performance index options. The basic approach is conducive to future expansion of features such as the incorporation of new constraints and the addition of new end conditions.

Biocybernetic factors in human perception and memory

The objective of this research is to develop biocybernetic techniques for use in the analysis and development of skills required for the enhancement of concrete images of the 'eidetic' type. The scan patterns of the eye during inspection of scenes are treated as indicators of the brain's strategy for the intake of visual information. The authors determine the features that differentiate visual scan patterns associated with superior imagery from scan patterns associated with inferior imagery, and simultaneously differentiate the EEG features correlated with superior imagery from those correlated with inferior imagery. A closely-coupled man-machine system has been designed to generate image enhancement and to train the individual to exert greater voluntary control over his own imagery. The models for EEG signals and saccadic eye movement in the man-machine system have been completed. The report describes the details of these models and discusses their usefulness.

Radar range data signal enhancement tracker

The design, fabrication, and performance characteristics are described of two digital data signal enhancement filters which are capable of being inserted between the Space Shuttle Navigation Sensor outputs and the guidance computer. Commonality of interfaces has been stressed so that the filters may be evaluated through operation with simulated sensors or with actual prototype sensor hardware. The filters will provide both a smoothed range and range rate output. Different conceptual approaches are utilized for each filter. The first filter is based on a combination low pass nonrecursive filter and a cascaded simple average smoother for range and range rate, respectively. Filter number two is a tracking filter which is capable of following transient data of the type encountered during burn periods. A test simulator was also designed which generates typical shuttle navigation sensor data.

Stability and control of maneuvering high-performance aircraft

Stability and control characteristics of a high-performance aircraft have been examined over a wide range of maneuvering flight conditions, in order to identify general rules for the design of departure-preventing control systems. This has been accomplished using fully coupled linear dynamic models which account for nonzero mean values of aerodynamic angles and angular rates. Stability augmentation systems derived from optimal control theory are shown to maintain stable, well-damped aircraft dynamics over a wide range of maneuvering flight conditions. This design approach generates cross-feeds and control interconnects (as well as conventional feedback terms) for improved aircraft stability.

Three-dimensional random earth atmospheres for Monte Carlo trajectory analyses

A set of four computer tapes containing random three dimensional Earth atmospheres is available for Monte Carlo trajectory analyses. The tapes contain sufficient atmospheric tables to allow replications of any trajectory below an altitude of 99 km. The atmospheres were provided by an empirical model designed to generate random atmospheres whose distributions match those in a data base of sounding rocket measurements. A readily implementable means of linking the tapes to any existing trajectory simulation computer program is described involving the addition of three subroutines which are listed in an appendix.
