Results of examination of the calvarium, brain, and meninges

Tissue reactions were found around the monitor (dosimeter) assemblies that had been implanted beneath the scalp of the five pocket mice that flew on Apollo XVII. Mitosis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampal formation was considerably reduced in comparison with that in control animals. Otherwise the brain tissue as well as the meninges in the flight animals appeared unaltered. Since the animals were exposed primarily to high Z-high energy (HZE) cosmic-ray particles at the lower end of the high LET spectrum, the lack of changes in the brain cannot be taken as evidence that the brain will suffer no damage from the heavier HZE particles on prolonged manned missions.

Metallographic examination of TD-nickel base alloys

Techniques are evaluated for chemical, electrochemical, and thermal etching of thoria dispersed (TD) nickel alloys. An electrochemical etch is described which yielded good results only for large grain sizes of TD-nickel. Two types of thermal etches are assessed for TD-nickel: an oxidation etch and vacuum annealing of a polished specimen to produce an etch. It is shown that the first etch was somewhat dependent on sample orientation with respect to the processing direction, the second technique was not sensitive to specimen orientation or grain size, and neither method appear to alter the innate grain structure when the materials were fully annealed prior to etching. An electrochemical etch is described which was used to observe the microstructures in TD-NiCr, and a thermal-oxidation etch is shown to produce better detail of grain boundaries and to have excellent etching behavior over the entire range of grain sizes of the sample.

Automatic classification techniques are described in relation to future information and natural resource planning systems with emphasis on application to Georgia resource management problems. The concept, design, and purpose of Georgia's statewide Resource AS Assessment Program is reviewed along with participation in a workshop at the Earth Resources Laboratory. Potential areas of application discussed include: agriculture, forestry, water resources, environmental planning, and geology.

An examination of the adiabatic approximation in cosmic ray propagation theory

A theory for the pitch-angle scattering of cosmic rays in a turbulent magnetic field can be derived from first principles by applying both the quasi-linear and adiabatic approximations to the master equation for the ensemble averaged distribution function. A proof of the failure of these approximations, taken together, is given. Some predictions of the quasi-linear theory, are given. New wave-like propagation modes have been discovered.

Critical examination of two-equation turbulence closure models

Comparison of the Jones-Launder, Ng-Spalding, Saffman-Wilcox, and Wilcox-Traci two-equation turbulence models has been conducted. It was shown that the Saffman-Wilcox and Wilcox-Traci dissipation-rate formulations admit straightforward integration through the viscous sublayer, whereas integration through the viscous sublayer is a more difficult issue with the Jones-Launder dissipation-function and the Ng-Spalding length-scale formulations. Numerical computations were conducted in which the models were applied to four equilibrium boundary layer flows including adverse, zero, and favorable pressure gradients. Computations of zero pressure gradient flow over a convex wall composed the final part of the comparison.

Re-examination of compliant wall experiments in air with water substrates

A possible alternative explanation is proposed for compliant wall drag reductions measured in previous investigations. Standing waves were observed to form on the surfaces of compliant wall models in air with water substrates as the freestream velocity was increased from 15 to 30 m/s. These waves resembled sine waves with half of the wave protruding over the upstream portion of the model and the other half being recessed over the downstream end of the model. These data coupled with results of recent drag reduction experiments suggest that standing waves could have caused a shift in the model center of gravity creating a bending moment that was interpreted as a reduction in the skin friction drag.

Annual health examination program, Ames Research Center

A cost analysis of a low-volume multiphasic health testing program is presented. The results indicate that unit costs are similar to those of high-volume automated programs. The comparability in unit cost appears to result from the savings in personnel and space requirements of the smaller program as compared with the larger ones.

Updating prediction models by dynamical relaxation - An examination of the technique

A dynamical relaxation technique for updating prediction models is analyzed with the help of the linear and nonlinear barotropic primitive equations. It is assumed that a complete four-dimensional time history of some prescribed subset of the meteorological variables is known. The rate of adaptation of the flow variables toward the true state is determined for a linearized f-model, and for mid-latitude and equatorial beta-plane models. The results of the analysis are corroborated by numerical experiments with the nonlinear shallow-water equations.

Auger spectroscopic examination of MgF2-coated Al mirrors before and after UV irradiation

Magnesium fluoride protected Al films were studied since these mirrors are commonly used in astronomical instruments whenever a highly reflecting optical surface is required in the wavelength region from 1100 A to 2000 A. Freshly prepared samples of evaporated Al + 250-A thick MgF2 on glass were analyzed by Auger electron spectroscopy in conjunction with surface erosion by Ar(+) ion bombardment before and after UV irradiation. The analysis showed that a very thin layer of surface contamination and not bulk photolysis in the MgF2 film was reponsible for the irradiation-induced reflectance loss. Postirradiation polishing with a mild calcium carbonate abrasive can restore a mirror's reflectance by removing the photolyzed surface film without disturbing the MgF2 layer.

Physical-chemical examination of the N2O3-SO3-H2O system

It was found that when (NO)HSO4 is added to absolute H2SO4, specific conductivity rises sharply, possibly due to an increase in mutual interionic effects and viscosity as the (NO)HSO4 concentration rises. The addition of SO3 to the solution yielded a precipitate; a combination of analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques indicated that this precipitate was (NO)HS2O7.

The magnetic field of Mars - Mars 5 evidence re-examined

The putative magnetotail encounters of the Mars 5 spacecraft cannot be scaled to the terrestrial magnetopause. Furthermore, the magnetic field during these claimed magnetotail encounters tends to be wrapped around the planet rather than rooted in it. There is no conclusive evidence that the Mars 5 spacecraft ever entered a Martian magnetosphere. The upper limit to the Martian magnetic moment is estimated to be 2 by 10 to the 21st power gauss-cu cm, or 0.000025 times the terrestrial magnetic moment.

Examination of the liquid line of descent of mare basalts in light of data from melt inclusions in olivine

Data on 226 melt inclusions and their host olivines (173 new analyses) are presented and interpreted in terms of general liquid lines of descent and olivine fractionation. The melt inclusions in olivine along with those in ilmenite and late-stage mesostasis in mare basalts define a complex trend. The trend is complicated by the effects of ilmenite, plagioclase, and pyroxene fractionation within the melt inclusions in olivine, the fact that most of the basalts were multiply saturated during olivine fractionation, and the phenomenon of late-stage silicate immiscibility. It is suggested that the first two factors can account for the observed marked divergence of the melt inclusion data from simple early olivine fractionation trends. The elimination of the effects of daughter mineral fractionation by homogenization experiments is considered.
