Liquid rocket booster study. Volume 2, book 4, appendices 6-8: Reports of Rocketdyne, Pratt and Whitney, and TRW

For the pressure fed engines, detailed trade studies were conducted defining engine features such as thrust vector control methods, thrust chamber construction, etc. This was followed by engine design layouts and booster propulsion configuration layouts. For the pump fed engines parametric performance and weight data was generated for both O2/H2 and O2/RP-1 engines. Subsequent studies resulted in the selection of both LOX/RP-1 and O2/H2 propellants for the pump fed engines. More detailed analysis of the selected LOX/RP-1 and O2/H2 engines was conducted during the final phase of the study.

Rocket plume base heating methodology

A review of radiative transport calculation methods for base heating is presented followed by a description of the current methodology for the Space Shuttle plume radiation predictions and improvements for the Advanced Solid Rocket Booster (ASRB). The calculation methods include empirical methods, the SIRRM code and the forward and reverse Monte Carlo methods. Current plume radiation methods include those used for the Space Shuttle Main Engines and the Solid Rocket Booster (SRB). Methods being developed for the ASRB include changes in plume property prediction methodology and application of the reverse Monte Carlo method in predicting plume radiation models. Results of the prediction methods are compared with experimental measurements on the current SRB and on 1/6-scale motors using both SRB and ASRB propellants. Examples are also presented demonstrating the statistical results available with the reverse Monte Carlo method.

Avoidance, control, and repair of fatigue damage.

A summary is presented of various methods available to the engineer for dealing with fatigue problems. Design, metallurgical, and service factors are considered. An attempt is made to provide a rational basis for each approach, resorting in each case to an understanding of the fundamental mechanism of the fatigue process.

Studies for determining rapid thrust response requirements and techniques for use in a long range transport aircraft

Propulsion systems proposed for the next generation of long-range transport aircraft will utilize advanced technology to reduce the noise to levels that will be inoffensive to the community. Additional reductions can be realized by adopting steeper glide slopes during the landing approach. The aircraft dynamic characteristics and methods of obtaining rapid engine response during the go-around maneuver from an aborted landing approach are identified and discussed. The study concludes that the present levels of flight safety will not be compromised by the steeper approach.

Calculation of aerodynamic characteristics of STOL aircraft

Method predicts lift and pitching moment characteristics of STOL aircraft with externally-blown, jet-augmented wing-flap combinations using potential-flow approach which involves combination of two flow models. Method can accommodate multiple engines per wing panel and part-span flaps.

Geysering inhibitor for vertical cryogenic transfer piping

Geysering (i.e., the expulsion of boiling liquid and its vapor from a vertical tube) has been a problem for the missile industry in long vertical cryogenic propellant feed lines connecting the launch vehicle propellant tank with the rocket engines. A proposed novel method of inhibiting geysering and the associated pressure gradients provides a self-starting self-regulating action that is not dependent on other active systems or components. The inhibiting action is attained by incorporating a concentric tube within the main transfer tube to prevent constriction of natural convective flow.

Experiences in using modal synthesis within project requirements

Modal synthesis methods were developed for use by engineers for cost-effective solutions of large structural dynamics problems. Different methods were proposed by various investigators based upon comparative solutions of relatively simple structures using different forms of displacement functions. The application of modal synthesis methods to a large complex structure in a project environment is described. The considerations include analysis, hardware interfaces, schedules, tests, resources, and other project requirements. Good technical results were obtained through the use of an integrated analysis/test modal synthesis on both substructures and systems.

LSA Large Area Silicon Sheet Task Enhanced I.D. Slicing Technology for Silicon Ingots

Development of inside diameter slicing technology to significantly increase the number of useable slices per inch of crystal over industry practice is discussed. The required reduction of both blade and slice thickness is to be accomplished by a combination of three key elements of slicing technology: (1) ingot rotation with minimum exposed blade area; (2) dynamic cutting edge control; and (3) the use of prefabricated insert blades. Design modifications on a slicing saw with microprocessor controls and hardware fabrication to complete this conversion were initiated. Several runs were conducted on the engineering saw incorporating the method of ingot rotation. Ingots with diameters up to six inches were sliced successfully on a production saw.

Abradable compressor and turbine seals, volume 1

The application and advantages of abradable coatings as gas-path seals in a general aviation turbine engine were evaluated for use on the high-pressure compressor, the high-pressure turbine, and the low-pressure turbine shrouds. Topics covered include: (1) the initial selection of candidate materials for interim full-scale engine testing; (2) interim engine testing of the initially selected materials and additional candidate materials; (3) the design of the component required to adapt the hardware to permit full-scale engine testing of the most promising materials; (4) finalization of the fabrication methods used in the manufacture of engine test hardware; and (5) the manufacture of the hardware necessary to support the final full-scale engine tests.

Method and apparatus for rapid thrust increases in a turbofan engine

Upon a landing approach, the normal compressor stator schedule of a fan speed controlled turbofan engine is temporarily varied to substantially close the stators to thereby increase the fuel flow and compressor speed in order to maintain fan speed and thrust. This running of the compressor at an off-design speed substantially reduces the time required to subsequently advance the engine speed to the takeoff thrust level by advancing the throttle and opening the compressor stators.

ECUT: Energy Conversion and Utilization Technologies program - Biocatalysis research activity

The activities of the Biocatalysis Research Activity are organized into the Biocatalysis and Molecular Modeling work elements and a supporting planning and analysis function. In the Biocatalysis work element, progress is made in developing a method for stabilizing genetically engineered traits in microorganisms, refining a technique for monitoring cells that are genetically engineered, and identifying strains of fungi for highly efficient preprocessing of biomass for optimizing the efficiency of bioreactors. In the Molecular Modeling work element, a preliminary model of the behavior of enzymes is developed. A preliminary investigation of the potential for synthesizing enzymes for use in electrochemical processes is completed. Contact with industry and universities is made to define key biocatalysis technical issues and to broaden the range of potential participants in the activity. Analyses are conducted to identify and evaluate potential concepts for future research funding.
