Preliminary analysis of thermal-infrared multispectral scanner data of the Iron Hill, Colorado carbonatite-alkalic rock complex

The Iron Hill carbonatite-alkalic igneous rock complex is in the Powderhorn mining district, approximately 40 km south-southwest of Gunnison, Colorado. The complex, which occupies about 30 sq km, was emplaced in metasedimentay and metavolcanic rocks during the later Precambrian or early Cambrian. The main rock types in the complex, from oldest to youngest, are fenite, pyroxenite, uncompahgrite, ijolite, nepheline syenite, and dolomitic carbonatite. The carbonatite is limonitic and forms an elliptially shaped 4 sq km stock. Calcitic and dolomitic carbonatite dikes are also numerous throughout the complex and in the pre-existing rocks. Pyroxenite is the most widespread rock type within the complex, but pyroxene is extensively altered to biotite, phlogopite, and vermiculite. Fenite, which formed through Na, K-metasomatism of the country rocks, typically contains more feldspar and less quartz than the equivalent unaltered country rocks. The other alkalic rock types are less widespread and less well exposed. Parts of the complex are covered by Oligocene ash-flow tuff and alluvial, colluvial, and glacial deposits. Sagebrush and grass cover is moderately dense to very dense at low to intermediate elevations; coniferous tree cover is dense at high elevations and on some north-facing slopes at lower elevations. A new algorithm was used to compute spectral emissivity ratios, independent of any emissivity assumptions. This algorithm has the advantage that any of the possible emissivity ratios can be computed and, thus, a large variety of composite ratio images can be constructed, which permits examination of various geologic hypotheses based on the spectral properties of the surface materials.

Application of Landsat imagery to metallic mineral exploration in Utah

Standard interpretive techniques were used to study the mosaic of two Landsat images of north central Utah including several major mining districts. Correlation of major Landsat-identified lineaments with the major metallic mining districts suggests that the Landsat-identified lineaments are fractures and that their distribution may be a valuable guide for identifying other mineralized areas. The imagery provides a more complete understanding of the geological information for identifying major tectonic and structural trends in the area. Several of the major mines are located on or closely adjacent to the intersections of at least two major lineaments. Landsat data should therefore be used to complement current mineral exploration programs.

Energy and remote sensing

Exploration for uranium, thorium, oil, gas and geothermal activity through remote sensing techniques is considered; satellite monitoring of coal-derived CO2 in the atmosphere, and the remote assessment of strip mining and land restoration are also mentioned. Reference is made to color ratio composites based on Landsat data, which may aid in the detection of uranium deposits, and to computer-enhanced black and white airborne scanning imagery, which may locate geothermal anomalies. Other applications of remote sensing to energy resources management, including mapping of transportation networks and power plant siting, are discussed.

Identification of Critical Airports from the Perspective of Delay and Disruption Propagation in Air Travel Networks

It is well-known that delays and disruptions that originate at certain airports end up spreading spread on the network to other airports, sometimes straining a large fraction of the system. Hence data-driven modeling of this phenomenon is important from the standpoint of planning and strategy. In this work, utilizing the publicly available data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), we employ the well-known influence maximization paradigm, to mine for the top airports in the US airport network, from the perspective of delay spread. In the process, we develop a diffusion simulator and implement a greedy algorithm to aid our task. We then explore the temporal trends by considering one winter month and one summer month in our analysis. Finally, we characterize the clusters in the US airport network and investigate the patterns of delay spread when airports in each of the clusters are affected.

A Knowledge Network-Based Approach to Facilitate Annotation of Clinical Pathway Component Clusters

Mining electronic health records (EHRs) to identify contextually related clinical concept clusters that tend to co-occur temporarily and consistently could improve data-driven clinical pathway (CP) construction. However, the automatic extraction of contextually related clinical concept clusters contains a vast amount of irrelevant information. Hence, this paper proposes a knowledge network-enabled literature-based discovery (LBD) approach to remove noise from clusters. The authors used published literature to filter spurious concepts from the clusters and used data from the US Department of Veterans Affairs’s major depressive disorder (MDD) cohort of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) for their experimentation. The approach was applied to 2,967 clusters extracted from the MDD OEF/OIF database. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can filter 94% of the irrelevant information. Moreover, the authors applied various network mining algorithms to analyze the clusters and demonstrated that LBD, along with network mining techniques, is a useful method for finding accurate contextually related clinical concept clusters. This could help domain researchers perform advanced analytics in CPs.

Thermal, RGB, and Multispectral Unexploded Ordnance Data Collection

As of May 1, 2026 Landmine contamination affects 58 countries and many hundreds of thousands of km² of land. For example, the National Mine Action Program Demining Ukraine reporting that up to 144,000 km² of territory are potentially contaminated and require survey and clearance (National Mine Action Program “Demining Ukraine,” n.d.) alone. This contamination includes mines and other explosive remnants of war and continues to constrain civilian access, agricultural use, infrastructure recovery, and broader socioeconomic activity (International Campaign to Ban Landmines–Cluster Munition Coalition [ICBL-CMC], 2024; Mine Action Review, 2024). Current response activities rely on established mine-action approaches including non-technical survey, technical survey, clearance, and explosive ordnance disposal, consistent with international mine-action terminology and operational practice (United Nations Mine Action Service [UNMAS], 2024; Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining [GICHD], 2023). In this context, UAV-based sensing, including UAV-mounted thermal imaging, may provide a useful supplementary capability by supporting faster, safer detection and mapping of suspect hazards prior to ground intervention (Smiljanic, 2022).

Composition design of high-entropy alloys with deep sets learning

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are an important material class in the development of next-generation structural materials, but the astronomically large composition space cannot be efficiently explored by experiments or first-principles calculations. Machine learning (ML) methods might address this challenge, but ML of HEAs has been hindered by the scarcity of HEA property data. In this work, the EMTO-CPA method was used to generate a large HEA dataset (spanning a composition space of 14 elements) containing 7086 cubic HEA structures with structural properties, 1911 of which have the complete elastic tensor calculated. The elastic property dataset was used to train a ML model with the Deep Sets architecture. The Deep Sets model has better predictive performance and generalizability compared to other ML models. Association rule mining was applied to the model predictions to describe the compositional dependence of HEA elastic properties and to demonstrate the potential for data-driven alloy design.

Fault tectonics and earthquake hazards in parts of southern California

The author has identified the following significant results. Four previously unknown faults were discovered in basement terrane of the Peninsular Ranges. These have been named the San Ysidro Creek fault, Thing Valley fault, Canyon City fault, and Warren Canyon fault. In addition fault gouge and breccia were recognized along the San Diego River fault. Study of features on Skylab imagery and review of geologic and seismic data suggest that the risk of a damaging earthquake is greater along the northwestern portion of the Elsinore fault than along the southeastern portion. Physiographic indicators of active faulting along the Garlock fault identifiable in Skylab imagery include scarps, linear ridges, shutter ridges, faceted ridges, linear valleys, undrained depressions and offset drainage. The following previously unrecognized fault segments are postulated for the Salton Trough Area: (1) An extension of a previously known fault in the San Andreas fault set located southeast of the Salton Sea; (2) An extension of the active San Jacinto fault zone along a tonal change in cultivated fields across Mexicali Valley ( the tonal change may represent different soil conditions along opposite sides of a fault). For the Skylab and LANDSAT images studied, pseudocolor transformations offer no advantages over the original images in the recognition of faults in Skylab and LANDSAT images. Alluvial deposits of different ages, a marble unit and iron oxide gossans of the Mojave Mining District are more readily differentiated on images prepared from ratios of individual bands of the S-192 multispectral scanner data. The San Andreas fault was also made more distinct in the 8/2 and 9/2 band ratios by enhancement of vegetation differences on opposite sides of the fault. Preliminary analysis indicates a significant earth resources potential for the discrimination of soil and rock types, including mineral alteration zones. This application should be actively pursued.

Kaona: Deep Searching and Curating Data from Aviation Safety Reporting Systems

Context: Several works in the literature have examined how safety narrative databases can be leveraged to share lessons learned. However, less attention has been given to augmenting existing processes for mining these safety reporting system databases. Aim: In this work, we introduce Kaona: An interface that weaves machine learning in existing aviation safety database mining activities. Method: We provide a use case of search, curation and newsletter writing to showcase how Kaona features build on existing processes and on its own to enhance information retrieval, curation and synthesis of narratives. Results: We created two instances of Kaona internally for evaluation, one using publicly available NASA’s ASRS narratives and another using publicly available C3RS narratives. Data ranged from 1998 to 2024. Conclusion: Our tool provides a new way to explore safety narratives, serving to re-imagine how text databases can benefit of novel information retrieval mechanisms in the era of large language models.

Markforged Continuous Fiber Composite Material Testing

Continuous fiber composite 3D printing promises to greatly expand the design space of polymer additive manufacturing (AM). A series of mechanical tests were performed to attempt to fully characterize the composite materials built from feedstock provided by the Markforged company. These tests included tensile, compression, Charpy impact, three point bending, coefficient of thermal expansion, and calorimetry tests. Specimens were prepared on the Mark Two 3D printer at LANL during the spring and summer of 2019. These samples were then shipped to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology’s Thermo-Mechanical Lab for testing during the summer and fall of 2019. Test data are reported and analyzed for each of the tests.

Numerical Simulation of Infrasound Resonance in Underground Tunnel Structures

Remote observation of infrasound resonant signals emanating from underground tunnel structures could potentially allow the remote quantification of the geometry of the underground structures in which the signals were generated. However, the sensitivity of these observations to tunnel geometry and changes in that geometry are unknown. In this report we outline a numerical simulation study with the following three objectives: 1. Can we model infrasound resonance using numerical simulations? 2. What is the sensitivity of the modeled observations to changes in tunnel geometry or boundary conditions? And 3. Can we accurately model resonant observations of explosions occurring in Redmond Salt Mine in Central Utah. In this report we outline affirmative answers to the first two objectives, but we were unable to accurately model the Redmond Explosions due to numerical instability in the model of the complex structure of the mine. Recommendations for future work emphasize the need to acquire additional datasets and to explore a more data-based approach in which changes in data signatures are detected as a first step towards developing a method which inverts resonant infrasound signals for tunnel geometry.

PubDAS: A PUBlic Distributed Acoustic Sensing Datasets Repository for Geosciences

During the past few years, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has become an invaluable tool for recording high-fidelity seismic wavefields with great spatiotemporal resolutions. However, the considerable amount of data generated during DAS experiments limits their distribution with the broader scientific community. Such a bottleneck inherently slows down the pursuit of new scientific discoveries in geosciences. Here, we introduce PubDAS—the first large-scale open-source repository where several DAS datasets from multiple experiments are publicly shared. PubDAS currently hosts eight datasets covering a variety of geological settings (e.g., urban centers, underground mines, and seafloor), spanning from several days to several years, offering both continuous and triggered active source recordings, and totaling up to ~90 TB of data. Here this article describes these datasets, their metadata, and how to access and download them. Some of these datasets have only been shallowly explored, leaving the door open for new discoveries in Earth sciences and beyond.

Plant Bioengineering Atlas: A Knowledge Graph of Genes, DNA Constructs, and Plant Traits.

Plant bioengineering has generated tens of thousands of genotype-to-phenotype relationships, but this knowledge remains fragmented across narrative literature and difficult to use computationally. Inconsistent descriptions of DNA constructs, host species, and traits, including variable species names, omitted regulatory elements, and inconsistent gene symbols, impede data reuse, comparative analysis, and design-build-test-learn cycles. Here, we present the Plant Bioengineering Atlas, a literature-mined, ontology-grounded knowledge base assembled using an artificial intelligence (AI)-aided extraction pipeline. A large language model parsed open-access primary research articles to generate structured, provenance-anchored records of engineered genes, modification types, promoter-gene-terminator constructs, host species, target traits, and reported phenotypes, with every record traceable to its source. The current release contains 14,358 curated records encompassing 6,998 distinct genes across 436 plant species from 6,452 papers published between 2000 and 2026. Corpus analysis reveals that experiments are concentrated in a small group of model and crop species, disease and pathogen resistance is the most frequently engineered trait class, and constitutive regulatory parts (particularly the CaMV 35S promoter and NOS terminator) remain pervasive. Two in five records omit one or both flanking regulatory elements (i.e., promoter and terminator), while only 23.4% describe cassettes in which both elements resolve to named part classes, exposing a systematic reproducibility gap. We organize these data into a knowledge graph linking genes, constructs, species, and traits; provide access through an interactive web portal; and propose an AI-compatible documentation standard for AI-ready reporting. The Plant Bioengineering Atlas provides a foundation for data-driven hypothesis generation and AI-aided plant biodesign.

3D Crustal Tomography Model of Utah

The ability to accurately locate seismic events is necessary for treaty monitoring. When using techniques that rely on the comparison of observed and predicted travel times to obtain these locations, it is important that the estimated travel times and their estimated uncertainties are also accurate. The methodology of Ballard et al. (2016a) has been used in the past to generate an accurate 3D tomographic global model of compressional wave slowness (the SAndia LoS Alamos 3D tomography model, i.e. SALSA3D). To re-establish functionality and to broaden the capabilities of the method to local distances, we have applied the methodology of Ballard et al. (2016a) to local data in Utah. This report details the results of the initial model generated, including relocations performed using analyst picked mining events at West Ridge Mine and three ground-truth events at Bingham Mine. We were successfully able to generate a feasible tomography model that resulted in reasonable relocations of the mining events.

Assessment of practicality of remote sensing techniques for a study of the effects of strip mining in Alabama

Because of the volume of coal produced by strip mining, the proximity of mining operations, and the diversity of mining methods (e.g. contour stripping, area stripping, multiple seam stripping, and augering, as well as underground mining), the Warrior Coal Basin seemed best suited for initial studies on the physical impact of strip mining in Alabama. Two test sites, (Cordova and Searles) representative of the various strip mining techniques and environmental problems, were chosen for intensive studies of the correlation between remote sensing and ground truth data. Efforts were eventually concentrated in the Searles Area, since it is more accessible and offers a better opportunity for study of erosional and depositional processes than the Cordova Area.
