On the contribution of Pair Distribution Function (PDF) to the characterization of nanocrystalline MOFs: The case of M-MOF-74

Nanoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have a great potential in so many industrial applications including heterogeneous catalysis and gas storage/capture/separation. MOF-74 is one of the most interesting MOFs in an academic context, as it contains open metal sites, possesses high versatility in metal nature, and can be prepared with so small crystal size. As a consequence, the catalytic activity of these nanocrystalline materials is superior to that given by their conventional counterparts. However, their characterization by conventional X-ray diffraction (XRD) is insufficient. Here, we present a joint study of XRD and Pair Distribution Function (PDF) -both acquired under synchrotron radiation- of a series of nanocrystalline M-MOF-74 materials (M = Mg, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn) prepared at room temperature. Whereas the XRD continues being lacking for an adequate structural characterization, PDF provides key structural information at medium and short range and, therefore, is ideal for studying such nano-domains. It was confirmed that these materials are exclusively composed by MOF-74 phase and that their poor ability to diffract is due solely to their eminent nanocrystallinity, which resulted to be even more pronounced than it has been previously estimated. Beyond Scherrer-like approaches, PDF can give direct information about the range of crystal size in nanocrystalline materials. Moreover, the technique is also able to detect slight structural deviations in short-range environments, just like it is made clear in the case of Cu-MOF-74 compared with the rest of M-MOF-74 materials, which possesses a marked Jahn-Teller effect in the octahedral coordination of Cu.

Elucidating texture and grain morphology contributions to the micromechanical response of additively manufactured Inconel 625

Microstructural variation of additively manufactured (AM) metal components in comparison to wrought counterparts makes certification for critical applications a challenge. Microscale simulations leveraging modern computational tools may be used to supplement testing of AM microstructures, thus accelerating certification by reducing the number of experiments needed. However, as micromechanical response is closely tied to critical properties like fatigue-life and fracture, utilization of these simulations with macroscale experimental data alone is insufficient. One means to attain microscale experimental data is in situ diffraction data collected from synchrotron X-ray sources. In this work, such data were collected during in situ compression of AM Inconel 625 superalloy. Interpretation of experimental results was assisted by massive (8M element) complementary micromechanical simulations performed on sets of virtual microstructures generated using cellular automata. Together, micromechanical data from diffraction experiments and simulations were used to probe the effects of textured “track” microstructures generated during laser powder bed fusion and directional strength-to-stiffness on micromechanical response. Though fiber-averaged directional strength-to-stiffness ratios were expected to dominate given the high elastic anisotropy of the material, the combination of small variations in texture and specific grain configurations unique to AM microstructures lead to significant variability in micromechanical response after yield. The findings emphasize the importance of high-fidelity microstructural representation that captures key texture components and AM-specific morphology for property prediction of AM metals.

Taking stock of nationally determined contributions: Continued ratcheting of ambition is critical to limit global warming to 1.5°C

We will discuss that as countries take stock of progress made in accomplishing their climate goals ahead of COP28 this year, it is increasingly apparent that countries must ratchet ambition in policy areas such as non-CO 2 gases and carbon dioxide removal, while halting deforestation to lead the globe on a path consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The contribution of the neuroendocrine system to adaption after repeated daily ozone exposure in rats

Ozone-induced lung injury/inflammation dissipates despite continued exposure for 3 or more days; however, the mechanisms of adaptation/habituation remain unclear. Since ozone effects are mediated through adrenal-derived stress hormones, which also regulate longevity of centrally-mediated stress response, we hypothesized that ozone-adaptation is linked to diminution of neuroendocrine stress-axes activation and glucocorticoid levels. Male Wistar-Kyoto-rats (12-week-old) were injected with vehicle or a therapeutically-relevant dexamethasone dose (0.01-mg/kg/day; intraperitoneal) for 1-month to determine if suppression of glucocorticoid signaling was linked to adaptation. Vehicle- and dexamethasone-treated rats were exposed to air or 0.8-ppm ozone, 4 h/day × 2 or 4 days to assess the impacts of acute exposure and adaptation, respectively. Dexamethasone reduced thymus and spleen weights, circulating lymphocytes, corticosterone and increased insulin. Ozone increased lavage-fluid protein and neutrophils and decreased circulating lymphocytes at day-2 but not day-4. Ozone-induced hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance and inhibition of beta-cell insulin release occurred at day-1 but not day-3. Ozone depleted circulating prolactin, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing-hormone at day-2 but not day-4, suggesting central mediation of adaptation. Adrenal epinephrine biosynthesis gene, Pnmt, was up-regulated after ozone exposure at both timepoints. However, genes involved in glucocorticoid biosynthesis were up-regulated after day-2 but not day-4, suggesting that acute 1- or 2-day ozone-mediated glucocorticoid increase elicits feedback inhibition to dampen hypothalamic stimulation of ACTH release in response to repeated subsequent ozone exposures. Although dexamethasone pretreatment affected circulating insulin, lymphocytes and adrenal genes, it had modest effect on ozone adaptation. In conclusion, ozone adaptation likely involves lack of hypothalamic response due to reduced availability of circulating glucocorticoids.
