Investigating Various Failure Models on Commercial Silicon Carbide

Structures and components made from ceramic materials are often brittle and can fail by the unstable growth of existing flaws such as voids and cracks. There have been several failure criteria developed for ceramics, in the past and they are broadly categorized based on their dependency on crack geometry. The present work implements eight failure criteria using an open-source software package – srlife, which predicts the lifetime or failure probability of concentrated solar power (CSP) structural components. The present work also checks the viability of building a ceramic CSP receiver, by analyzing the reliability predictions from srlife for a SiC ceramic. The reliability predictions for a biaxial loading problem indicated the Shetty Mixed-Mode criterion gives the most conservative predictions. Whereas, in case of the CSP receiver, the predictions show that the co-planar strain energy criterion gives the most conservative predictions as it is agnostic towards the type of stress, and therefore, is not recommended to be used designing ceramic receivers.

Wind Turbine Materials Recycling Prize Phase 2 (Commercialization of Wind Turbine Blade Waste (WTBW)-Based, Lightweight, Cementitious Composite Materials): Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-24-31305

The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) and AltiSora, LLC., will develop new lightweight cementitious composite material technologies that will utilize wind turbine blade waste as a raw material to; (1) allow a high value addition (2) at low cost, enabling (3) a significant waste consumption volume; while (4) consuming the entire wind turbine blade, without (5) creating any waste or emissions and to also (6) offer specific benefits to communities involved.

A cross-sectional study of the nasal and fecal microbiota of sows from different health status within six commercial swine farms

Cull sows are a unique population on swine farms, often representing poor producing or compromised animals, and even though recent studies have reported that the microbiome is associated with susceptibility to diseases, the microbiome of the cull sow population has not been explored. The main objective of this study was to investigate whether there were differences in fecal and upper respiratory tract microbiota composition for groups of sows of different health status (healthy, cull, and compromised/ clinical sows) and from different farms (1 to 6). Six swine farms were visited once. Thirty individual fecal samples and nasal swabs were obtained at each farm and pooled by five across health status and farm. Samples underwent 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and nasal and fecal microbiota were analyzed using QIIME2 v.2021.4. Overall, the diversity of the nasal microbiota was lower than the fecal microbiota (p < 0.01). No significant differences were found in fecal or nasal alpha diversity by sow’s health status or by farm. Furthermore, there were significant differences in nasal microbial composition by farm and health status (PERMANOVA, p < 0.05), and in fecal microbiota by farm (PERMANOVA, p < 0.05), but not by health status. Lastly, at the L7 level, there was one differentially abundant taxa across farms for each nasal and fecal pooled samples. This study provided baseline information for nasal and fecal microbiota of sows under field conditions, and results suggest that farm of origin can affect microbial diversity and composition. Furthermore, sow’s health status may have an impact on the nasal microbiota composition.

Commercial building loads providing ancillary services In PJM

The adoption of low carbon energy technologies such as variable renewable energy and electric vehicles, coupled with the efficacy of energy efficiency to reduce traditional base load has increased the uncertainty inherent in the net load shape. Handling this variability with slower, traditional resources leads to inefficient system dispatch, and in some cases may compromise reliability. Grid operators are looking to future energy technologies, such as automated demand response (DR), to provide capacity-based reliability services as the need for these services increase. While DR resources are expected to have the flexibility characteristics operators are looking for, demonstrations are necessary to build confidence in their capabilities. Additionally, building owners are uncertain of the monetary value and operational burden of providing these services. To address this, the present study demonstrates the ability of demand response resources providing two ancillary services in the PJM territory, synchronous reserve and regulation, using an OpenADR 2.0b signaling architecture. The loads under control include HVAC and lighting at a big box retail store and variable frequency fan loads. The study examines performance characteristics of the resource: the speed of response, communications latencies in the architecture, and accuracy of response. It also examines the frequency and duration of events and the value in the marketplace which can be used to examine if the opportunity is sufficient to entice building owners to participate.

Novel, Simplified Air Delivery System Design Gets Commercialized

Typical air delivery systems require contractors to design systems that are complex, difficult to integrate into the framing and structural components of a home, and often do not meet the optimization demands of newer energy-efficient homes. This complex process can be a burden to already strained construction labor costs. However, a new technology simplifies duct system design to improve comfort and eliminate sources of installation error for residential air delivery systems.
