Basin-Scale River Runoff Estimation from GRACE Gravity Satellites, Climate Models and In Situ Observations: a Case Study in the Amazon Basin

River runoff is estimated as a water budget residual using Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) terrestrial water storage time series, ERA5 reanalysis data, and precipitation observations for January 2003 through December 2015 for the Obidos upstream drainage basin and for the entire Amazon basin. Estimated runoff based on the water budget agrees remarkably well with in situgauge observations at Obidos, especially at seasonal time scales, with nearly perfect phase agreementbut slightly larger seasonal amplitude. The discrepancy in the seasonal amplitude maybe attributed to underestimation of river gauge runoff during the wet season when water overflows the riverbanks. The ERA5 model appears to overestimate long-term mean evapotranspiration in the Amazon by ~2 cm/monthb ased on comparisons with precipitation and runoff observations. Using precipitation data based on satellites and gauge observations relative to gauge observations alone improved agreement between water budget runoff estimates and in situ runoff observations. Seasonal variations in ERA5 simulated runoff are about twice as large as those from in situobservations and show a large phase lag as well. Water budget based runoff for the entire Amazon (~ 7,200 km3averaged 29over the 13 yr period) is significantly larger than observed runoff (~5,700 km3) at notably larger than previous estimates for the entire Amazon. These differences may be partly related to submarine runoff from the Amazon basin that cannot be captured by surface gauges.

Going to Extremes NEEMO Case Study

In human space flight, crew preparation is paramount. NASA employs various tools in order to best prepare its crews; simulation and simulators, training for specific extravehicular activity (EVA) tasks in its Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, and survival training. Apollo astronauts participated in desert wilderness survival to hone their skills. NASA has a long history of using terrestrial based activities as space flight analogs to advance science, test hardware and techniques, and develop crew leadership skills and team solidarity

MBSE Validation and Verification: Case Study for LADEE

The Lunar Atmosphere Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) mission orbited the moon in order to measure the density, composition, and time variability of the lunar dust environment. The successful mission launched September 7, 2013 and was de-orbited and impacted the moon's surface on April 17, 2014. The ground-side and onboard flight software for the mission was developed using a “Model-Based Software Engineering” (MBSE) methodology combined with strong reuse of Government and Commercial Off-The Shelf (G/COTS) components. Models of the spacecraft and flight software were developed in a graphical dynamics modeling package. Flight Software requirements were prototyped and refined using the simulated models. After the model was shown to work as desired in the simulation framework, C-code software was automatically generated from the models. The auto-generated software was then tested in real-time Processor-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop test beds. “Traveling Road Show” test beds were used for early integration tests with payloads and other subsystems. Traditional techniques for verifying computational sciences models were used to characterize the spacecraft simulation. A lightweight set of formal methods analysis, static analysis, formal inspection, and code coverage analyses were utilized to further reduce defects in the onboard flight software artifacts. These techniques were applied early and often in the development process, iteratively increasing the capabilities of software and fidelity of vehicle models and test beds.

SIR-C Modal Survey: A Case Study in Free-Free Testing

There has been an increased interest recently in developing alternatives to fixed-base modal testing for verification of large Space Shuttle payloads. A promising approach is free-free modal testing, augmented with residual flexibility measurements obtained from interface verification testing. This paper presents summary results from the recent free-free test performed on the Shuttle Imaging Radar-C payload.
