Joint Planning of EV Fast Charging Stations and Power Distribution Systems With Balanced Traffic Flow Assignment

To tackle the challenges introduced by the fast-growing charging demand of electric vehicles (EVs), the power distribution systems (PDSs) and fast charging stations (FCSs) of EVs should be planned and operated in a more coordinated fashion. However, existing planning approaches generally aim to minimize investment costs in PDSs while ignoring the risk of worsening traffic conditions. To overcome this research gap, this article integrates the interests of traffic networks into PDS and FCS joint planning model to mitigate negative impacts on traffic conditions caused by installing FCSs. First, a novel microscopic method that is different from traditional assignment methods is proposed to simulate the influences of FCSs on traffic flows and EV charging loads. Then, a multiobjective joint planning model is developed to minimize both the planning costs and unbalanced traffic flows. A new bilayer Benders decomposition algorithm is designed to solve the proposed joint planning model. Numerical results on two practical systems in China validate the feasibility of our microscopic method by comparing the simulated results with real data. Compared with existing approaches, it is also demonstrated that the proposed joint planning approach helps to balance traffic flow assignments and relieve traffic congestion.

An Online Search Method for Representative Risky Fault Chains Based on Reinforcement Learning and Knowledge Transfer

In the analysis of cascading outages and blackouts in power systems, risky cascading fault chains should be accurately identified in order to do further block or alleviate blackouts. However, the huge computational burden makes online analysis difficult. In this paper, an online search method for representative risky fault chains based on reinforcement learning and knowledge transfer is proposed. This method aims at promoting efficiency by exploiting similarities of adjacent power flow snapshots in operations. After the “representative risky fault chain” is defined, a framework of tree search based on Markov Decision Process and Q-learning is constructed. The knowledge in past runs is accumulated offline and then applied online, with a mechanism of knowledge transition and extension. The proposed learning based approach is verified on an illustrative 39-bus system with different loading levels, and simulations are carried out on a realworld 1000-bus power grid in China to show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

VSC-HVDC Interties for Urban Power Grid Enhancement

Urban power grids are facing many operational and expansion challenges to meet further demand growth and increased reliability requirements. Advanced transmission technologies have been considered by the electric utilities to effectively increase the utilization of existing infrastructure and operational flexibility. The focus of this paper is on VSC-HVDC technologies for urban power grid enhancement and modernization. First, a potential technical scheme is proposed for converting an existing AC circuit to DC operation, which could boost the power transfer capability of the critical transmission corridor and increase network operational flexibility. Second, this paper proposes three operation modes for the VSC-HVDC interties in urban power grids corresponding to normal, emergency and island operating conditions, respectively. An integrated, adaptive emergency control strategy (AEC) is proposed that can enable adaptive power flow responses of the VSC-HVDC intertie under varying system operating conditions and critical contingencies. The flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed operational principles of urban VSC-HVDC intertie and the corresponding control strategies are verified in PSCAD/EMTDC using a realistic urban power grid in China.

Hierarchical Distributed Optimal Power Flow of HV and MV Distribution Networks With Continuous and Discrete Devices

With large-scale distributed photovoltaics (PVs) being integrated into distribution networks (DNs), coordinated optimal power flow (OPF) of high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) DNs should be investigated to optimally dispatch the distributed PVs and other network devices. Here, this paper presents a hierarchical distributed OPF method for HV and MV DNs with on-load tap changers, reactive power compensators, feeder switches and distributed PVs. A hierarchical master-slave control architecture is applied to implement coordinated OPF of two-layer DNs. The HV master problem and MV subproblems are transformed into mixed-integer convex problems respectively with second order cone programming and LinDistFlow approximation. Since there is no efficient distributed algorithm to solve such OPF models with integer subproblems, a novel distributed algorithm is proposed in this paper to efficiently solve the hierarchical coordinated OPF model with integer subproblems in a distributed manner. In the proposed algorithm, the coordinated OPF model is solved in a branch-and-bound framework, where in each branch node generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) algorithm is applied to decompose the coordinated OPF model into a master problem and relaxed subproblems and solves them iteratively to get optimal solution. The GBD optimal and feasible cutting planes generated in a branch node are proved to be valid for its descendants. Moreover, three acceleration techniques are introduced into the proposed algorithm to improve computational efficiency. Finally, the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are verified via simulation tests in Jinzhai DNs of China.

Data-Driven Event Detection of Power Systems Based on Unequal-Interval Reduction of PMU Data and Local Outlier Factor

With the deployment of phasor measurement units (PMU) and wide area measurement system (WAMS), it is feasible to have an insight into the events occurred in power systems based on measured data. Thus, a novel data-driven algorithm based on local outlier factor (LOF) is proposed in this work to detect and locate events in power systems using reduced PMU data. First, the unequal-interval reduction method is presented to reduce the scale of PMU data in sub-stations and reconstruct it in master station of WAMS, which can relieve the burden of communication systems. Then, principle component analysis (PCA)-based similarity search method is proposed to measure the differences of operation state between any two buses. Next, LOF is presented to detect the abnormal events in power systems, and employed to determine the region of the event source. Finally, six cases from the Western electricity coordinating council (WECC) 179-bus power system, a case from the South China power system (SCPS), and a case from the Guangdong power system (GDPS) are utilized to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Overall, the results show that proposed algorithm is effective and can be applied to event detection, event location, and online monitoring, which can enhance the situation awareness ability of power system operators.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the effect of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) pre‐treatment before in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF‐ET) on the live birth rate in infertile women with poor ovarian response (POR) defined according to the Bologna criteria. Design A randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial. Setting Nine reproductive medical centers in China. Population A total of 821 participants with POR defined according to the Bologna criteria were enrolled in the study between April 2016 and December 2018. Methods Eligible participants were randomly assigned to receive either DHEA ( n = 410) or placebo ( n = 411) treatments for 4–12 weeks prior to IVF‐ET, in a 1:1 ratio. Main outcome measures Live birth rate after the first embryo transfer. Results Thirty‐six (8.8%) of 410 women in the DHEA group and 37 (9.0%) of 411 women in the placebo group had a live birth, with no significant difference observed between groups (relative risk, 0.98, 95% CI, 0.63–1.51; p = 0.911). There were no significant differences in the number of retrieved oocytes, and the rates of clinical pregnancy, pregnancy loss, and cumulative live births between the two groups. Conclusions DHEA administration prior to IVF‐ET had no beneficial effect on the live birth rate relative to placebo in women with POR defined according to the Bologna criteria. Tweetable Abstract No benefit was found in poor ovarian responders who received DHEA administration prior to IVF.

The association between vaginal microbiota disorders and early missed abortion: A prospective study

Abstract Introduction The objective of this study was to explore the association between disordered vaginal microbiota and missed abortion to ascertain potential causes of missed abortion related to vaginal microbiology. Material and methods This study was a prospective cohort study with a comparison group (reference group). Vaginal secretions from the posterior fornix of women in the early stages of pregnancy were collected in the Xiangya Third Hospital of Central South University in Changsha, Hunan, China, from November 2018 to November 2019. A total of 54 cases of missed abortion (case group) and 50 cases of normal pregnancy requiring induced abortion (reference group) were analyzed. Bacterial DNA was extracted, hybridized with gene‐specific primers, and then detected using a bacterial chip. The composition and relative abundance of vaginal microbiota in the two groups were compared using α‐diversity analysis, β‐diversity analysis, and the linear discriminant analysis effect size method. Results The α‐diversity analysis showed that the Simpson index of the case group was lower than that of the reference group, whereas the Shannon index in the case group was higher. The relative abundance of Firmicutes in the case group (42.52%) was lower than in the reference group (51.03%, p < 0.05), as was the relative abundance of Lactobacillus (case group 16.51%, reference group 23.00%; p < 0.05). Interestingly, levels of Mycoplasma genitalium and Ureaplasma were lower in the case group ( p < 0.05). The relative abundance of Lactobacillus crispatus , Lactobacillus jensenii , and Lactobacillus gasseri was also significantly lower in the case group than in the reference group ( p < 0.05). The pathways enriched in the case group were predominantly related to metabolism, whereas the genetics‐related pathways were predominantly enriched in the reference group. Conclusions Bacteria are more diverse and unevenly distributed in patients with missed abortion. Decreases in the proportion of vaginal Lactobacillus and changes in Lactobacillus species in these patients may increase the chance of genital tract pathogenic bacterial infection. To our knowledge, our study was the first to observe that a decrease of Firmicutes levels in the vaginal microbiota might impair energy metabolism and have an association with missed abortion.

Effects of cold stress on metabolic regulation in the overwintering larvae of the Chinese white pine beetle, Dendroctonus armandi

Abstract The Chinese white pine beetle, Dendroctonus armandi Tsai & Li (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), is considered the most destructive forest pest in the Qinling and Bashan Mountains of China. In recent years, winter temperature has dropped in these regions, and extremely low temperatures are hard to survive for insects. Cold hardiness becomes a crucial strategy because temperature change often leads to fluctuations in insect abundance, and the metabolism rate is a key index of resistance to cold in overwintering insects. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the change in respiratory rate and the activity of metabolism‐related mitochondrial enzymes in D. armandi larvae under cold conditions. We found that the respiratory rate decreased, and it was matched with the activity of glutamate dehydrogenase, aconitase, and lipase during overwintering. Among the various test times under cold conditions, the respiratory rate also decreased with decreasing temperature and increased under very low temperatures. At all cold stress periods, glutamate dehydrogenase and lipase showed increased activity at higher temperatures and decreased activity under lower temperatures, but the activity of NAD‐malic enzyme, NADP‐malic enzyme, mitochondrial isocitrate dehydrogenase, and aconitase were contrary. Under all low temperatures, the activity of enzymes – except for NADP‐malic enzyme, glutamate dehydrogenase, and lipase – increased in short‐term cold stress and decreased in long‐term cold stress at 4, 0, −4, −6, −8, and −10 °C. However, at −2 °C, the activity of enzymes showed a decreasing trend in short‐term treatments and an increasing trend in long‐term treatments, except for mitochondrial isocitrate dehydrogenase. The results not only improve our understanding of the metabolic mechanism of cold adaptation in D. armandi , but also provide an important experimental basis for further study and biological pest control.

Generating Ectropis obliqua axenic larvae in support of functional microbiome studies

Abstract Ectropis obliqua Prout (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is a serious leaf‐eating pest in tea gardens throughout China, with rich bacterial communities in the larval gut. Few studies have investigated whether these bacteria play an important role in growth, development, and adaptability of E. obliqua . Axenic larval models are a useful tool for the study of interactions between gut bacteria and host insects. At present, artificial diet and antibiotics are typically used to remove larval gut bacteria for study; however, this method may change the natural food of insects and the habitat provided by their host plants, and cannot completely eliminate insect gut bacteria. Therefore, in order to establish an axenic insect feeding model, we first investigated the effects of egg age, different disinfectant concentration, and treatment time on the eggs of E. obliqua through orthogonal experiments. Next, we fed E. obliqua larvae tissue‐cultured tea seedlings under aseptic conditions. Thus, we successfully generated a feeding model of gut axenic larvae in the laboratory. Based on it, we then compared the mortality of axenic and non‐axenic E. obliqua larvae infected with the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuill. These results demonstrated the feasibility of this axenic larval model and that B. bassiana is a broad‐spectrum entomogenous fungus with a toxic effect on E. obliqua .

The functional roles of species in metacommunities, as revealed by metanetwork analyses of bird–plant frugivory networks

Abstract Understanding how biodiversity and interaction networks change across environmental gradients is a major challenge in ecology. We integrated metacommunity and metanetwork perspectives to test species’ functional roles in bird–plant frugivory interactions in a fragmented forest landscape in Southwest China, with consequences for seed dispersal. Availability of fruit resources both on and under trees created vertical feeding stratification for frugivorous birds. Bird–plant interactions involving birds feeding only on‐the‐tree or both on and under‐the‐tree (shared) had a higher centrality and contributed more to metanetwork organisation than interactions involving birds feeding only under‐the‐tree. Moreover, bird–plant interactions associated with large‐seeded plants disproportionately contributed to metanetwork organisation and centrality. Consequently, on‐the‐tree and shared birds contributed more to metanetwork organisation whereas under‐the‐tree birds were more involved in local processes. We would expect that species’ roles in the metanetwork will translate into different conservation values for maintaining functioning of seed‐dispersal networks.

Assessing biogeographic survey gaps in bacterial diversity knowledge: A global synthesis of freshwaters

Freshwaters account for 0.8% of Earth's surface area, yet support >10% of known plant and animal species making them disproportionately biodiverse. Modern molecular techniques have begun to reveal microbial diversity, but application of these approaches to address global microbial biogeography is relatively unknown in freshwaters. Our aim was to identify gaps in microbial data coverage along climatic and landscape disturbance gradients and among terrestrial biomes and hydrographic regions for all freshwater ecosystems and three freshwater habitat types: lakes and reservoirs (lentic); streams and rivers (lotic); and wetlands. We reviewed literature on microbial diversity in freshwaters surveyed using 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing which identify microbial taxa. We georeferenced survey locations and used a geographic information system to identify and map gaps in survey coverage using open-source data for climate, landscape disturbance, terrestrial biomes, and freshwater ecoregions. In our study, we compiled 3,425 georeferenced survey locations reported from 963 studies. Streams were surveyed most frequently (60.8% of survey locations), followed by lakes (33.5%) and wetlands (5.6%). Surveys were concentrated in North America, central and western Europe, and Southeast Asia; 35% of freshwater ecoregions were surveyed at least once across freshwater habitat types, whereas 23%, 23%, and 12% were surveyed at least once for lentic, lotic, and wetland habitat types, respectively. The climatic gap analysis indicated coverage is high for temperate regions but lacking in the tropics and Arctic, particularly for wetland ecosystems. Our assessment revealed high climatic coverage of freshwater microbial diversity knowledge, but expansive ecoregional gaps attributable to biased sampling near research institutions in North America, western Europe, and China. Future surveys should target ecoregions in Africa, South America, Central Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. An essential next step will be to curate and disseminate sequencing efforts to facilitate the study of processes driving global diversity patterns.

Reduced Erosion Augments Soil Carbon Storage Under Cover Crops

ABSTRACT Cover crops, a promising strategy to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in croplands and mitigate climate change, have typically been shown to benefit soil carbon (C) storage from increased plant C inputs. However, input‐driven C benefits may be augmented by the reduction of C outputs induced by cover crops, a process that has been tested by individual studies but has not yet been synthesized. Here we quantified the impact of cover crops on organic C loss via soil erosion (SOC erosion) and revealed the geographical variability at the global scale. We analyzed the field data from 152 paired control and cover crop treatments from 57 published studies worldwide using meta‐analysis and machine learning. The meta‐analysis results showed that cover crops widely reduced SOC erosion by an average of 68% on an annual basis, while they increased SOC stock by 14% (0–15 cm). The absolute SOC erosion reduction ranged from 0 to 18.0 Mg C −1 ha −1 year −1 and showed no correlation with the SOC stock change that varied from −8.07 to 22.6 Mg C −1 ha −1 year −1 at 0–15 cm depth, indicating the latter more likely related to plant C inputs. The magnitude of SOC erosion reduction was dominantly determined by topographic slope. The global map generated by machine learning showed the relative effectiveness of SOC erosion reduction mainly occurred in temperate regions, including central Europe, central‐east China, and Southern South America. Our results highlight that cover crop‐induced erosion reduction can augment SOC stock to provide additive C benefits, especially in sloping and temperate croplands, for mitigating climate change.

When One Cannot Bypass the Byproducts: Plastic Packaging Waste Embedded in Production and Export

While packaging is praised for reducing waste of perishable food products, packaging waste is a growing concern. Its least recyclable type, plastics waste, is increasingly polluting the marine environment and many developing countries are now refusing to take the waste from developed countries. Before responsibility can be established, one has to identify the key producers and consumers. This paper adjusts the packaging waste satellite account in EXIOBASE 3 by combining the official waste data published by the World Bank. Based on input-output methods, we find that the world's top suppliers of plastic packaging waste are the United States, China, and Brazil. Food and beverage products constitute the bulk of the problem. Yet, 21% of these countries' plastic packaging waste is induced export. At the global level, it is 25.8%. About 76.0% of export-induced plastic packaging waste corresponds to packaging of the exported goods that will ultimately be disposed of in the destination country; while the others correspond to the packaging used in their supply-chain and wasted domestically. We conclude that international efforts need to assign shared responsibility and promote improvement in plastic packaging recyclability.

Genetic identification of 91 poplar cultivars based on SSR markers

Accurate genetic identification and relationship analysis of poplar cultivars is necessary to establish commercial poplar plantations and select suitable breeding strategies. In this study, 91 poplar cultivars belonging to four sections (Aigeiros, Tacamahaca, Populus and Turanga) and inter/intra-sectional hybrids were genotyped using 18 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. In total, 222 alleles were amplified with an average of 12.3 alleles per marker. The mean polymorphic information content and power of discrimination were 0.706 and 0.813, respectively. Five SSR markers (ORPM_103, ORPM_247, GCPM_1048, GCPM_1255 and LG_X_19) constituted a core fingerprint and were sufficient to identify all the tested cultivars. With some notable exceptions, cultivars of the same species generally clustered together in cluster (UPGMA) and ordination (PCO) analyses. Flow cytometry indicated that 11 poplar cultivars were triploid. Among these, seven had three alleles at some loci, suggesting that SSR markers could indicate the ploidy level to some extent. This study provides useful genetic information for the identification and protection of poplar cultivars in China and offers a guideline for the selection of poplar crossing parents based on ploidy level and genetic relationships.

Spectroscopy outperforms leaf trait relationships for predicting photosynthetic capacity across different forest types

Leaf trait relationships are widely used to predict ecosystem function in Terrestrial Biosphere Models (TBMs), in which leaf maximum carboxylation capacity (V c,max ), an important trait for modelling photosynthesis, can be inferred from other easier- to-measure traits. However, whether trait-V c,max relationships are robust across different forest types remains unclear. Here we used measurements of leaf traits, including one morphological trait (leaf mass per area), three biochemical traits (leaf water content, area-based leaf nitrogen content, and leaf chlorophyll content), one physiological trait (V c,max ), as well as leaf reflectance spectra, and explored their relationships within and across three contrasting forest types in China. We found weak and forest type-specific relationships between V c,max and the four morphological and biochemical traits (R 2 ≤ 0.15), indicated by significantly changing slopes and intercepts across forest types. In contrast, reflectance spectroscopy effectively collapsed the differences in the trait-V c,max relationships across three forest biomes into a single robust model for V c,max (R 2 = 0.77), and also accurately estimated the four traits (R 2 = 0.75-0.94). Furthermore, these findings challenge the traditional use of empirical trait-V c,max relationships in TBMs for estimating terrestrial plant photosynthesis, but also highlight spectroscopy as an efficient alternative for characterizing V c,max and multi-trait variability, with critical insights into ecosystem modeling and functional trait ecology.

Rapid in situ diversification rates in Rhamnaceae explain the parallel evolution of high diversity in temperate biomes from global to local scales

Summary The macroevolutionary processes that have shaped biodiversity across the temperate realm remain poorly understood and may have resulted from evolutionary dynamics related to diversification rates, dispersal rates, and colonization times, closely coupled with Cenozoic climate change. We integrated phylogenomic, environmental ordination, and macroevolutionary analyses for the cosmopolitan angiosperm family Rhamnaceae to disentangle the evolutionary processes that have contributed to high species diversity within and across temperate biomes. Our results show independent colonization of environmentally similar but geographically separated temperate regions mainly during the Oligocene, consistent with the global expansion of temperate biomes. High global, regional, and local temperate diversity was the result of high in situ diversification rates, rather than high immigration rates or accumulation time, except for Southern China, which was colonized much earlier than the other regions. The relatively common lineage dispersals out of temperate hotspots highlight strong source‐sink dynamics across the cosmopolitan distribution of Rhamnaceae. The proliferation of temperate environments since the Oligocene may have provided the ecological opportunity for rapid in situ diversification of Rhamnaceae across the temperate realm. Our study illustrates the importance of high in situ diversification rates for the establishment of modern temperate biomes and biodiversity hotspots across spatial scales.

Contrasting coordination of non‐structural carbohydrates with leaf and root economic strategies of alpine coniferous forests

Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), as the labile fraction and dominant carbon currency, are essential mediators of plant adaptation to environments. However, whether and how NSC coordinates with plant economic strategy frameworks, particularly the well-recognized leaf economics spectrums (LES) and root economics space (RES), remains unclear. We examined the relationships between NSC and key plant economics traits in leaves and fine roots across 90 alpine coniferous populations on the Tibetan Plateau, China. We observed contrasting coordination of NSC with economics traits in leaves and roots. Leaf total NSC and soluble sugar aligned with the leaf economic spectrum, conveying a trade-off between growth and storage in leaves. However, NSC in roots was independent of the root economic spectrum, but highly coordinated with root foraging, with more starch and less sugar in forage-efficient, thinner roots. Further, NSC-trait coordination in leaves and roots was, respectively, driven by local temperature and precipitation. These findings highlight distinct roles of NSC in shaping the above- and belowground multidimensional economics trait space, and NSC-based carbon economics provides a mechanistic understanding of how plants adapt to heterogeneous habitats and respond to environmental changes.

Linking leaf dark respiration to leaf traits and reflectance spectroscopy across diverse forest types

Leaf dark respiration (R dark ), an important yet rarely quantified component of carbon cycling in forest ecosystems, is often simulated from leaf traits such as the maximum carboxylation capacity (V cmax ), leaf mass per area (LMA), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations, in terrestrial biosphere models. However, the validity of these relationships across forest types remains to be thoroughly assessed. Here, in this study, we analyzed R dark variability and its associations with V cmax and other leaf traits across three temperate, subtropical and tropical forests in China, evaluating the effectiveness of leaf spectroscopy as a superior monitoring alternative. We found that leaf magnesium and calcium concentrations were more significant in explaining cross-site R dark than commonly used traits like LMA, N and P concentrations, but univariate trait–R dark relationships were always weak (r 2 ≤ 0.15) and forest-specific. Although multivariate relationships of leaf traits improved the model performance, leaf spectroscopy outperformed trait–R dark relationships, accurately predicted cross-site R dark (r 2 = 0.65) and pinpointed the factors contributing to R dark variability. Our findings reveal a few novel traits with greater cross-site scalability regarding R dark , challenging the use of empirical trait–R dark relationships in process models and emphasize the potential of leaf spectroscopy as a promising alternative for estimating R dark , which could ultimately improve process modeling of terrestrial plant respiration.
