A model for discrete fracture-clay rock interaction incorporating electrostatic effects on transport

Abstract A model based on the code CrunchClay is presented for a fracture-clay matrix system that takes electrostatic effects on transport into account. The electrostatic effects on transport include those associated with the development of a diffusion potential as captured by the Nernst-Planck equation, and the formation of a diffuse layer bordering negatively charged clay particles within which partial anion exclusion occurs. The model is based on a dual continuum formulation that accounts for diffuse layer and bulk water pore space, providing a more flexible framework than is found in the classical mean electrostatic potential models. The diffuse layer model is obtained by volume averaging ion concentrations in the Poisson-Boltzmann equation, but also includes the treatment of longitudinal transport within this continuum. The calculation of transport within the bulk and diffuse layer porosity is based on a new formulation for the Nernst-Planck equation that considers averaging of diffusion coefficients and accumulation factors at grid cell interfaces. Equations for function residuals and the associated Jacobian matrix are presented such that the system of nonlinear differential-algebraic equations can be solved with Newton’s method. As an example, we consider a 2D system with a single discrete fracture within which flow and advective transport occurs that is coupled to diffusion in the clay-rich matrix. The simulation results demonstrate the lack of retardation for anions (e.g., 36 Cl − ) of the contaminant plume within the fracture flow system because they are largely excluded from the charged clay rock, while the migration of cations (e.g., 90 Sr ++ ) is more strongly attenuated. The diffusive loss of divalent cations in particular from the fracture is accentuated by their accumulation in the diffuse layer within the clay-rich matrix.

High fidelity simulations of contaminant dispersion in an urban environment with comparison to magnetic resonance imaging measurements

The dispersion of a contaminant in an urban environment has the potential to impact a large population of people. In this work, a complex urban canopy flow based on the Oklahoma City downtown business district circa 2003 is studied using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and high-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LES). MRI is a novel experimental technique that can provide high-resolution measurements in four dimensions (three spatial and temporal) for lab scale models. The experiments and simulations use the same geometry and boundary conditions providing a one-to-one comparison of the two methods. Results are presented on the time-averaged velocity and concentration fields, the temporal dynamics of the concentration plumes for a transient release, and a novel Cloud Identification Algorithm that can separate plumes produced by periodic contaminant releases used for ensemble averaging over many releases. The MRI and LES datasets both include millions of measurement voxels and the comparisons highlight the complex 3D nature of the flow including strong vertical velocities in spanwise street canyons and flow acceleration in streamwise street canyons. The concentration fields are qualitatively similar albeit the LES shows larger dispersion. A quantitative analysis with performance measures compares the datasets pointwise and demonstrates that the two 3D datasets are similar with respect to many measures including a fractional bias of 0.02 (ideal=0.0), correlation coefficient of 0.87 (ideal = 1.0), and the fraction points within a factor of 2 is 0.98 (ideal = 1.0). Plume analysis compares the arrival and residence time of contaminant and is found to vary significantly with location within the urban environment with arrival times between 0 and 1.25 and differences within the contaminant cloud less than 10% at most locations.

Speed of Sound Measurements of Binary Mixtures of Hydrofluorocarbons [Pentafluoroethane (R-125), 1,1-Difluoroethane (R-152a), or 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-Heptafluoropropane (R-227ea)] with Hydrofluoroolefins [2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene (R-1234yf) or trans-1,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene (R-1234ze(E))]

In this article, speed of sound data measured using a dual-path pulse-echo instrument are reported for three binary refrigerant mixtures, R-125/1234yf, R-1234yf/152a, and R-1234ze(E)/227ea, at compositions of (0.33/0.67) and (0.67/0.33) mole fraction. The speed of sound was studied at temperatures ranging from 230 K to 345 K from pressures slightly above the bubble point curve up to 20 MPa for the mixtures containing R-1234yf and 49 MPa for the R-1234ze(E)/227ea mixtures. The relative combined expanded speed of sound uncertainty ranged from 0.039 % to 0.317 % with a mean uncertainty over all state points of less than 0.10 %. The reported data are compared to the most recent mixture models in REFPROP for each blend studied. Comparisons of available mixture models for the R-125/1234yf and R-1234yf/152a blends exhibit average absolute deviation values ranging from 0.10 % to 0.27 %, and the average absolute deviations for R-1234ze(E)/227ea blends range from 0.62 % to 0.94 %. The comparisons show that only minor adjustments are required to the R-125/1234yf and R-1234yf/152a mixture models to represent the speed of sound data within its uncertainty. However, significant adjustments are needed to improve the current mixture models for the R-1234ze(E)/227ea blend. Deficiencies with the R-1234ze(E)/227ea mixture model are not unexpected since it (1) utilizes a pure-fluid EOS R-1234ze(E) that has been shown to inaccurately represent R-1234ze(E) speed of sound values and (2) uses binary interaction parameters for the chemically similar mixture of R-1234yf/227ea.

GraphTango: A Hybrid Representation Format for Efficient Streaming Graph Updates and Analysis

Abstract Streaming graph processing performs batched updates and analytics on a time-evolving graph. The underlying representation format of the graph largely determines the throughputs of these updates and analytics phases. Existing representation formats usually employ variations of hash tables or adjacency lists. However, a recent study showed that the adjacency-list-based approaches perform poorly on heavy-tailed graphs, and the hash table-based approaches suffer on short-tailed graphs. We propose GraphTango, a hybrid representation format that provides excellent update and analytics throughput regardless of the graph’s degree distribution. GraphTango dynamically switches among three different formats based on a vertex’s degree: (i) Low-degree vertices store the edges directly with the neighborhood metadata, confining accesses to a single cache line, (2) Medium-degree vertices use adjacency lists, and (3) High-degree vertices use hash tables as well as adjacency lists. In this case, the adjacency list provides fast traversal during the analytics phase, while the hash table provides constant-time lookups during the update phase. We further optimized the performance by designing an open-addressing-based hash table that fully utilizes every fetched cache line. In addition, we developed a thread-local lock-free memory pool that allows fast growing/shrinking of the adjacency lists and hash tables in a multi-threaded environment. We evaluated GraphTango with the help of the SAGA-Bench framework and compared it with four other representation formats: Stinger, Degree-aware Robin Hood Hashing, and two adjacency list-based formats with different workload balancing scheme. On average, GraphTango provides 4.5x higher insertion throughput, 3.2x higher deletion throughput, and 1.1x higher analytics throughput over the next best format. Furthermore, we integrated GraphTango with the state-of-the-art graph processing frameworks DZiG and RisGraph. Compared to the vanilla DZiG and vanilla RisGraph , [ GraphTango + DZiG ] and [ GraphTango + RisGraph ] reduces the average batch processing time by 2.3x and 1.5x, respectively.

Synthesis and characteristics of porous ceramic tubes: a comparison of centrifugal casting and cold isostatic pressing methods

Short porous ceramic tubes in small quantities are needed for membrane-related research and development efforts and can be synthesized by centrifugal casting (CC) or cold isostatic pressing (CIP) methods. Here, this work evaluates the characteristics of porous ceramic tubes prepared by both methods and provides a strategy for selecting the proper method for ceramic tube fabrication, depending on its application. Samarium-doped ceria (SDC) with an average crystallite size of 10 nm was synthesized by a citrate method and used to make porous SDC tubes by the CC and CIP methods under different conditions. Porous SDC tubes were prepared from an aqueous suspension of the SDC powder with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using a cylindrical metallic mold, centrifugated at 4000–6000 rpm, followed by sintering in 1200–1500 °C. SDC tubes were also made by the CIP method from the SDC powder placed inside a cylindrical rubber bag followed by isostatic compression at 1379 bar. The pore structure of the SDC tubes was characterized by helium permeation and liquid nitrogen Archimedes method. Due to high compression pressure giving a low porosity green tube, the CIP method with lower sintering temperature produces SDC tubes with much lower porosity and average pore size and similar tortuosity compared to the CC methods. The CIP method should be used to prepare low porosity or dense ceramic tubes, and the CC method should be used for preparing high-porosity ceramic tubes or tubes with pore gradient tube wall.

Mutual Diffusion Coefficients of Na 2 SO 4 at C = 0.02989 mol·dm -3 and 298.15 K by Using Rayleigh Interferometry with Free Diffusion Boundary Conditions: Experimental Test of the Effect of the C 3/2 Concentration Dependence of Refractive Index at Low Concentration

Rayleigh interferometry is one of the most precise and accurate methods for the experimental determination of the mutual diffusion coefficients of both electrolytes and non-electrolytes in liquid solutions. For binary solutions at moderate and high concentrations where the concentration dependences of both diffusion coefficient and refractive index can be assumed to be linear or almost linear and the concentration difference ΔC between a pair of solutions undergoing free diffusion is not large compared to their average concentration, and by using proper combinations of the interference fringe positions as they vary with time, under these conditions diffusion coefficients are obtained that are independent of the size of ΔC. However, this situation becomes more complicated at low concentrations for electrolyte solutions where the concentration dependences of both the diffusion coefficient and refractive index are non-linear, with C 1/2 dependence for the diffusion coefficient and C 3/2 dependence for the refractive index. As a test of these effects on calculated mutual diffusion of electrolyte solutions at low concentrations as measured by Rayleigh interferometry, apparent mutual diffusion coefficients D v,a (volume-fixed reference frame) were measured for fixed average concentrations C=(0.02989 ± 0.00001) mol·dm –3 of Na 2 SO 4 (aq) at 298.15 K while varying ΔC/C from 0.66673 to 2, a threefold variation. The dependence of the diffusion coefficient on ΔC/C was found to be linear, yielding D v = 1.041 6 × 10 –9 m 2 ·s –1 for an infinitely small concentration difference between the diffusing solutions.

Exploration of fibers produced from petroleum based-mesophase pitch and pet blends for carbon fiber production

Petroleum-derived mesophase pitch and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were blended and melt-extruded to create precursor fibers. The raw blends, heat treated bulk materials, and fibers were all examined to determine compatibility between petroleum-derived mesophase pitch and PET. Thermal investigation of the raw blends showed the presence of both the pitch and PET in separate phases suggesting no interactions had occurred during mixing. Here, the heat-treated bulk material also showed multiple phases under polarized light while Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that the two materials did not fully separate during extrusion. Elemental scans of the precursor fibers showed areas of high oxygen concentrations averaging 11.7% as compared to a 2% oxygen concentration across the majority of the cross-section. Tensile tests of the precursor fibers showed a decrease in average modulus as compared to pure pitch fibers; however, the depressed modulus of the blended fibers was found to be independent of the PET weight percentage. Fibers created from 5 wt.% PET had a strength value within 10% of pure pitch and a 200% increase in modulus and were therefore found to be the most promising for carbon fiber production. Pure pitch and the 5 wt.% PET fibers were stabilized and carbonized to 1000 °C. Both types of fibers were tensile tested to determine their strength and stiffness. Pure pitch carbon fibers maintained a higher strength while the carbon fibers produced from 5 wt.% PET possessed a stiffer modulus which can be attributed to their radial microstructure.

Well-to-wheels greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions from battery electric vehicles in China

Electric vehicles (EVs) play a crucial role in addressing climate change and urban air quality concerns. China has emerged as the global largest EV market with 1.2 million EVs sold in 2018. This study established a novel life cycle energy use and emission inventory collecting up-to-date data including the electricity generation mix, emission controls in the power and industrial sectors, and the energy use in the fuel transport to estimate the well-to-wheels (WTW) greenhouse gas (GHG), and air pollutant emissions for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and gasoline passenger vehicles in China. The results show that an average BEV has 35% lower WTW GHG emissions than an average gasoline car. BEVs reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions by 98% and 34%, respectively, but have comparable or slightly higher primary fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. Compact and small-size vehicles generally have lower GHG and air pollutant emissions than mid- and large-size vehicles. Class A vehicles contribute the most in the absolute amount of GHG and air pollutant emissions and therefore have the biggest potential for emission reduction. Our results suggest that global policymakers should continue to promote the transition to clean power sources, emission control, and fuel economy regulations, which are critical to enhancing emission mitigation benefits of BEVs. We also suggest EV development strategies should be formulated targeting vehicle class with the biggest emission mitigation potentials.

New soil carbon sequestration with nitrogen enrichment: a meta-analysis

Background and aims: Through agriculture and industry, humans are increasing the deposition and availability of nitrogen (N) in ecosystems worldwide. Carbon (C) isotope tracers provide useful insights into soil C dynamics, as they allow to study soil C pools of different ages. In this study we evaluated to what extent N enrichment affects soil C dynamics in experiments that applied C isotope tracers. Methods: Using meta-analysis, we synthesized data from 35 published papers. We made a distinction between “new C” and “old C” stocks, i.e., soil C derived from plant C input since the start of the isotopic enrichment, or unlabeled, pre-existing soil C. Results: Averaged across studies, N addition increased new soil C stocks (+30.3%), total soil C stocks (+6.1%) and soil C input proxies (+30.7%). Although N addition had no overall, average, effect on old soil C stocks and old soil C respiration, old soil C stocks increased with the amount of N added and respiration of old soil C declined. Nitrogen-induced effects on new soil C and soil C input both decreased with the amount of extraneous N added in control treatments. Conclusion: Although our findings require additional confirmation from long-term field experiments, our analysis provides isotopic evidence that N addition stimulates soil C storage both by increasing soil C input and (at high N rates) by decreasing decomposition of old soil C. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the widely reported saturating response of plant growth to N enrichment also applies to new soil C storage.

A Coupled Small and Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering Study of Phase Transformation Mechanisms in U-6Wt Pct Nb

The elevated temperature phase transformation kinetics of U-6wt%Nb in both wrought and cast conditions were investigated using in-situ high energy synchrotron X-ray scattering. The evolution of the phase content, γ-phase composition, and microstructure morphology was determined through the analysis of simultaneously collected wide-angle diffraction and small-angle scattering (SAXS) data. The results of the wide-angle scattering analysis, especially the phase fractions and average composition of the γ-phase, provide model parameters to enable a quantitative analysis using the SAXS data. Greater clarity regarding the kinetics of different precipitation mechanisms, namely the continuous precipitation (CP) of α-U within the γ-phase matrix and the discontinuous (DP) grain boundary precipitation of a lamellar microstructure, consisting of α-U and Nb-rich γ-phase are obtained from the coupled measurement modes. These results indicate that the CP mechanism is responsible for the initial precipitation of α-U at all temperatures considered. Near the nose in the time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram at ~798 K, both mechanisms are active during the early stages of phase transformation. However, the DP mechanism has an increasingly long incubation period with decreasing temperature below the TTT nose. In conclusion, the average interlamellar spacing obtained from the SAXS analysis increases with time, providing further evidence of the so-called divergent DP behavior previously observed in U-6wt%Nb alloys.

Review of Solid State Consolidation Processing Techniques of ODS Steels (Hot Extrusion, Hot Isostatic Pressing, Spark Plasma Sintering, and Stir Friction Consolidation): Resulting Microstructures and Mechanical Properties

This paper reviews the solid-state consolidation processing techniques for Oxide Dispersion Strengthened steels and compares them in terms of the resulting microstructure and reported mechanical properties. Synthesis techniques include hot extrusion, hot isostatic pressing, spark plasma sintering and friction consolidation. The effects of process parameters on the resulting microstructures and performance are discussed for each technique. Average oxide size, average grain size, and porosity are compared across techniques, as well as mechanical strength and ductility. Across consolidation techniques where temperature can be controlled, a low sintering temperature with a high sintering pressure is favorable for keeping oxide sizes, grain sizes, and porosity low. The use of yttrium and titanium for oxide formation has been evidenced to reduce oxide sizes, and tungsten additions have been shown to improve strength. Current literature suggests that the more mature hot extrusion technique produces stronger steel with consistently fine oxides, while other alternative solid-state consolidation, while promising, offer margin for improvement.

The practice and economics of hybrid poplar biomass production for biofuels and bioproducts in the Pacific Northwest

Hybrid poplar demonstration-scale farms were managed in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California to establish management practices, yields, harvesting methods, and the economics of biomass production. Yield during the 2-year establishment cycle averaged 3.5 dry Mg ha –1 year –1 increasing to 11.6 Mg ha –1 year –1 in the ensuing 3-year coppice cycle. Populus deltoides (Bartram ex Marsh.) × P. maximowiczii (Henry) varieties preformed best in Oregon during the coppice cycle with the best variety producing 18.1 Mg ha –1 year –1 , while P. ×generosa (Henry) varieties maximized yields in Washington at 22.1 Mg ha –1 year –1 . P. ×canadensis (Moench) varieties excelled in Idaho and California with upper yields of 13.6 Mg ha –1 year –1 and 12.9 Mg ha –1 year –1 , respectively. Stands were cut with a single-pass harvester 2 years after planting and a second time after 3 years of coppice growth; material capacity, limited by poor ground conditions, varied between 21.7 to 31.3 green Mg h –1 . Chemical composition averaged 1.87% inorganics, 7.74% extractives, 26.90% lignin, 38.07% glucan, 13.66% xylan, 1.61% galactan, 1.14% arabinan, and 2.76% mannan. Production costs (USD) projected over a 20-year rotation of six coppice cycles were $71.81 Mg –1 in Washington, $89.91 Mg –1 in Oregon, $98.76 Mg–1 in Idaho, and 179.07 Mg–1 in California. Here, land rental, establishment, crop care, harvest, transportation, and land restoration, respectively, accounted for 23%, 5%, 19%, 30%, 17%, and 6% of total feedstock cost. Farms were successfully restored to conditions existing before poplar conversion. In the absence of fertilization, increases in soil pH and decreases in nitrate-nitrogen, zinc, iron, and organic matter were consistently noted but could not be associated with poplar production alone.

Home range and resource selection of Virginia opossums in the rural southeastern United States

The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) has a rapidly expanding distribution in North America, but many aspects of its ecology remain relatively understudied, particularly in rural areas of its core range. We collected GPS telemetry data from 93 opossums in a rural, non-agricultural landscape in South Carolina, USA (2018–2019) to examine factors influencing space use and resource selection. Estimated male home ranges (99% utilization distributions) were on average 50% larger than those of females (mean home range 115.9 ± 103.7 ha vs 76.7 ± 75.0 ha). The home range size decreased on average by 20% with each 20% increase in deciduous land cover but was not affected by season or other landscape factors. Core area sizes (65% utilization distributions) were not influenced by sex (mean core area size 29.1 ± 23.7 ha and 22.4 ha ± 13.8 for males and females, respectively) or season, but the core area size decreased by 14% with each 400 m increase in distance from a permanent water source. Resource selection by opossums primarily occurred at the landscape level. Both males and females generally selected for wetlands while avoiding pine forests and developed/open areas, likely the result of differences in resource availability and predation risk between habitats. Opossums also tended to select for linear features such as unpaved roads and edge habitat, which may facilitate movement across the landscape. Finally, the home ranges we documented are among the largest recorded for opossums in the USA, likely the result of the relatively low resource abundance throughout our study area due to comparatively minimal anthropogenic influence.

Grain boundary strain as a determinant of localized sink efficiency

The opportunity to achieve radiation tolerance in crystalline materials hinges on understanding the structure and response of grain boundary sinks to irradiation. A common descriptor of grain boundary efficiency as a defect sink is the denuded zone, which is a defect free zone adjacent to the grain boundary dictated by its ability to absorb radiation induced defects. This descriptor is often used at the mesoscale, which requires an averaging of absorption events. In this paper, we resolve the defect sink efficiency as a function of interfacial strain with respect to grain boundary character, and correlate high levels of grain boundary strain to an enhanced absorption efficiency. Here, we also introduce a key relationship between localized strain in proximity with the grain boundary sink and the variation absorption efficiency associated with these regions, revealing the pitfalls of averaging absorption events along a grain boundary, and presenting a path forward toward improved models for denuded zones and localized grain boundary absorption phenomena.

Slip localization behavior at triple junctions in nickel-base superalloys

Incipient slip localization in the vicinity of hundreds of grain boundary triple junctions (TJs) in a lightly deformed nickel-base superalloy IN718 is studied using a combination of three-dimensional (3D) crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) modeling, high resolution digital image correlation (HR-DIC) and 3D electron back-scatter diffraction tomography (3D EBSD). A 3D reconstruction method enables identification of thousands of TJs and correspondence of any observed slip bands with their originating TJ lines below the specimen surface. Here, we present a large-scale CPFE model of the experimental 3D microstructure composed of high-fidelity representation of the TJ lines and the boundaries and interiors of the parent grains and use it to calculate the local micromechanical response and slip activity of all TJs at the onset of macroscopic yielding. Statistical analysis of the calculated quantities reveal TJs develop larger stress concentration and grain-average re-orientation than grain interiors and grain boundaries, however no substantial differences in cumulative slip were found among these microstructural regions. We find that TJs with observed slip bands generate lower grain-average re-orientation, fewer active slip systems, and more localized slip on a single system than those without. The distinctions in the reorientation and slip activity are stronger in TJs that experience more intense slip.

Economics of electric vehicle corridor fast charging in the United States

Corridor direct-current fast charging (DCFC) stations enable long-distance electric vehicle travel, yet their economics remain uncertain due to high capital costs, low initial utilization, and exposure to utility demand charges. This study evaluates the long-term economics of corridor DCFC across the United States, incorporating capital and operating expenses-including charging equipment and real-world utility tariffs-alongside modeled station utilization, financial incentives, and ancillary retail revenue. In the Baseline scenario, modeled breakeven costs for corridor DCFC average $\$$0.42/kWh over 20 years, yet fewer than half of stations reach cost parity with gasoline on a per-mile basis. Utilization is the primary driver of cost variation, with low-utilization stations costing roughly six times more per kilowatt-hour than the national average. Excluding stations that fail to reach cost parity reduces National Highway System coverage within 50 miles from 94% to 67%, underscoring the trade-off between market-driven deployment and comprehensive network coverage. These results provide guidance for charging providers, utilities, planners, and policymakers seeking to develop and sustain a financially viable national corridor charging network.

Onset dynamics of air-water menisci on rock fracture surfaces

Information on menisci dynamics and equilibrium contact angles, θ e , is needed for modeling multiphase flow of fluids in geologic formations. The wettability of fracture faces is relevant to applications such as waterflooding in enhanced oil recovery and evaluation of caprock integrity for geologic carbon sequestration. We investigated the vertical capillary rise of air-water menisci on exposed fracture faces for a sandstone, a shale, and three granites. The experimental design approximated that employed in the Wilhelmy plate method. Replicate fracture faces were prepared by fracturing cylindrical rock cores using the Brazilian method and splitting the fractured cores apart along their fracture planes. Meniscus onset was imaged from a cross-sectional perspective using dynamic neutron radiography, and quantified with change point analysis. An existing model for meniscus onset fitted the experimental data very well (median R 2 = 0.96). Capillary rise was typified by t 2/3 scaling (where t is time), followed by a constant equilibrium height, z e . The average time taken for the menisci to reach z e was 0.39 s, with no differences between rock types. The menisci achieved a greater vertical extent on the fracture faces of the sedimentary rocks as compared to those of the granites. Apparent θ e values were calculated from the best fit estimates of z e using the Wilhelmy plate equation for a smooth and planar vertical surface. Despite the fractal roughness of some of the fracture faces, there was a significant linear relationship (R 2 = 0.80) between the apparent θ e values and intrinsic θ e values measured on polished surfaces of the same rocks using the sessile drop method. The regression equation indicated the apparent θ e values were consistently greater than the intrinsic values. This overestimation may be due to averaging of pixels at the air-water-solid interface, a required step in the image analysis. Further exploration of the range of applicability and measurement accuracy of this proposed new technique would be valuable.
