Endogenous Interface Pricing for Consistent Transmission–Distribution Co-Optimization With Discrete Distribution Controls

This paper proposes an endogenous interface pricing model for day-ahead transmission–distribution co-optimization that co-determines the interface locational marginal price (LMP) and the transmission–distribution exchange, ensuring price–dispatch consistency while optimally scheduling discrete distribution controls. The formulation couples a DC optimal power flow (OPF) with a branch-flow AC OPF that schedules distributed energy resources (DERs), tap-changer settings, capacitor banks (CBs), and multi-period energy storage systems (ESSs) under feeder voltage and current limits, and is solved as a mixed-integer second-order cone program (MISOCP). In a T14–D33 system, coordinated device scheduling recovers about 90% of the distribution-to-transmission export achievable in a reference case that ignores distribution network (DN) limits, while satisfying a 1.05 p.u. voltage upper bound. In a T39–D34/D37/D123 system, a sequential decoupled benchmark produces interface LMP distortions up to 12.5% and a 7.28% mismatch in net export energy, whereas the proposed model removes these distortions and the associated settlement mismatches. Second-order cone (SOC) relaxation gaps remain below $10^{-3}$ in all cases.

Design Optimization for Weighted Conduction Loss Minimization in a Dual-Active-Bridge-Based PV Microinverter

This manuscript presents a harmonic-superposition based frequency-domain approach for analysis and optimal design of a single-stage DAB-based DC-AC converter used in low-voltage DC to high voltage AC applications, such as PV microinverter. Specifically, two topological variations and correspondingly different modulation strategies involving up to four control variables (three phase shifts and switching frequency) are analyzed. Optimal trajectories of control variables are determined that result in minimized transformer RMS current at a given average power, while enforcing near-uniform ZVS. To make the design process holistic, an outer optimization loop is used to determine optimal values for the power transfer inductance (integrated as the transformer’s leakage inductance) and turns ratio, which minimize the weighted-average conduction loss contribution to the microinverter’s CEC efficiency. Based on the optimization analyses, a 400 W microinverter prototype is built and experimental results at one operating point are presented, achieving a measured efficiency of 92.8%.

Securing 3D NAND Without Density Loss via In-Situ Encryption Using a Single Transistor XOR Cell

In this article, we push lightweight XOR-based in-situ encryption to extreme density by proposing a singletransistor XOR memory cell and applying it to 3D NAND, enabling secure data storage without density loss. Using a ferroelectric field-effect transistor (FeFET) as an example technology, we demonstrate that: i) a single-transistor memory can realize the XOR function by exploiting the ability to charge the source and drain separately and control current flow direction, eliminating the need for conventional encrypted cells that rely on complementary devices; ii) with a XOR-based cipher, encryption and decryption can be mapped to in-situ array operations, where ciphertext is stored as the threshold voltage (VTH) states of FeFETs in a NAND string, and decryption is achieved through read operations using key-dependent complementary source/drain bias; iii) the proposed technique is scalable to multi-level cell (MLC) storage by encrypting and decrypting data bit by bit; iv) using an integrated NAND FeFET array, we experimentally demonstrate encryption and decryption operations for both single-level cell (SLC) and MLC storage; v) systemlevel benchmarking shows that the proposed technique achieves 48× and 278× improvements in encryption and decryption throughput, respectively, compared to AES.

Reduced Common-Mode Voltage PWM Scheme for Full-SiC Three-Level Uninterruptible Power Supply With Small DC-Link Capacitors

In this article, a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for three-level full-SiC uninterruptible power supplies is developed to achieve a high power density. Two key passive components are selected for size reduction of the ac-ac stage: common-mode (CM) EMI filter, and dc-link capacitors. To reduce the CM noise, a new vector combination is proposed based on synchronous switching among three-phases. The proposed combinations align CM voltage (CMV) to be a single pulse per switching period. Owing to the simple shape, CMV cancellation between a three-level rectifier and inverter can be maximally utilized. A transition between the three combinations can control the drift of neutral point voltage. An equivalent carrier-based implementation is developed. Second, a simple algorithm to compensate neutral point voltage fluctuation is proposed both for differential mode (DM) and CM output voltage. Low-order harmonics on three-phase currents and an additional high-frequency CM noise by misaligned switching instant can be eliminated. The proposed compensation can be implemented by a simple correction on carrier slopes and injected zero-sequence voltage. The proposed PWM scheme is verified with 20-kW full-SiC UPS switching at 60 kHz with 140 μF dc-link capacitors.

A Generic FSC Wind Park EMT Model with IEEE Std 2800-Compliant Fault Ride-Through Capability

The modern power grid is seeing more and more electricity come from renewable sources like wind farms, which use sophisticated power electronics instead of traditional spinning generators. To keep everything running smoothly and meet industry standards such as IEEE 2800, these systems need smart control strategies. In our work, we built a flexible computer model of a full-scale wind farm converter that can handle grid disturbances without shutting down. When a fault or storm hits, the model’s built-in logic automatically adjusts the currents it sends to the grid and protects its internal energy storage, ensuring the wind farm stays connected and doesn’t damage its own equipment. Once the disturbance clears, the model restores normal operation seamlessly, so there’s no long interruption in power delivery. At the same time, it carefully regulates the voltage where the wind farm ties into the larger grid, helping to maintain safe voltage levels across the network. Our simulations show that this control setup not only meets all the requirements of IEEE Standard 2800 but also allows the wind farm to recover quickly and predictably, keeping the lights on no matter what happens on the grid.

Over 11% Efficient Eco-Friendly Kesterite Solar Cell: Effects of S-Enriched Surface of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 Absorber and Band Gap Controlled (Zn,Sn)O Buffer

For high efficiency kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cell, CdS thin film was usually used as a buffer layer. However, due to the toxicity of Cd and pollution problems involved from the solution-based chemical bath deposition, eco-friendly high efficiency CZTSSe solar cell with Cd-free buffer is necessary. As an Cd-free buffer layer, we investigated (Zn,Sn)O (ZTO) film deposited by sputtering method. In order to achieve high power conversion efficiency, we controlled energy band gaps of CZTSSe absorber as well as ZTO buffer, which was required to optimize conduction band offset (CBO) between the absorber and the buffer and to increase open circuit voltage (Voc) and fill factor (FF). The CBO was optimized by controlling the band gap of ZTO. By varying the Sn/(Zn + Sn) ratio and its deposition temperature, band gap of ZTO was successfully adjusted. Experimental and computational calculation results showed that solar cell performance was strongly affected by the CBO between absorber and buffer. Besides CBO matching, larger band gap of ZTO improved short circuit current density (Jsc) with enhanced external quantum efficiency value in blue photon spectrum range. As an additional way to improve power conversion efficiency of solar cell, band graded CZTSSe absorber was developed by using spray-based two-step process. The sprayed CZTSSe film was engineered to have S-enriched surface, which makes surface band gap widened and surface passivated, and resultantly increases Voc, Jsc and fill factor (FF). By controlling band gaps of both CZTSSe absorber and ZTO buffer, we obtained 11.22% environment-friendly CZTSSe solar cell without MgF2 anti-reflection coating.

A layered Prussian blue analogue as fast-charging negative electrode material for lithium-ion batteries

The simultaneous achievement of fast-charging and high specific capacity remains a critical challenge for lithium-ion battery negative electrodes. Here we report a layered manganese-based Prussian blue analogue, synthesized through vacancy control and subsequent thermal transformation. As a conversion-type negative electrode, this material exhibits high-rate performance, delivering a specific capacity of 510 mAh g −1 at a specific current of 8 A g −1 , and operates at a moderate average voltage of approximately 1.2 V vs. Li/Li + , which mitigates lithium plating risks. This high-rate capability stems from the analogue’s specific linkage configurations, which facilitate a high content of active transition metal and strong Li+ adsorption at nitrogen sites. The high transition metal content enables a high reversible capacity, while strong Li + adsorption promotes an efficient initial crystalline-to-amorphous transformation. This process induces dynamically reversible component migration during subsequent cycling, thereby enhancing conversion reaction kinetics. Our findings provide insights into the application of Prussian blue analogues as fast-charging negative electrode materials. The development of fast-charging and high-capacity negative electrodes is critical for advanced lithium-ion batteries. Here, authors use a vacancy engineering strategy to develop a layered Prussian blue analogue with competitive rate capability, delivering a specific capacity of 510 mAh g −1 at a specific current of 8 A g −1 .

Ultrastable cathodes enabled by compositional and structural dual-gradient design

Cathodes for next-generation batteries are pressed for higher voltage operation (≥4.5 V) to achieve high capacity with long cyclability and thermal tolerance. Current cathodes fail to meet these requirements owing to structural and electrochemical strains at high voltages, leading to fast capacity fading. Here, in this work, we present a cathode with a coherent architecture ranging from ordered to disordered frameworks with concentration gradient and controllable Ni oxidation activities, which can overcome voltage ceilings imposed by existing cathodes. This design enables simultaneous high-capacity and high-voltage operation at 4.5 V without capacity fading, and up to 4.7 V with negligible capacity decay. Multiscale diffraction and imaging techniques reveal the disordered surface is electrochemically and structurally indestructible, preventing surface parasitic reactions and phase transitions. Structural coherence from ordering to disordering limits lattice parameter changes, mitigating lattice strain and enhancing morphological integrity. The dual-gradient design also notably improves thermal stability, driving the advancement of high-performance cathode materials.

Fuel cell powerplant operation in Apollo spacecraft.

Primary electrical power for loads in the Apollo Command and Service Modules is furnished by a system of three fuel cell powerplants. The powerplants convert cryogenic hydrogen and oxygen into direct current. Water formed in the fuel cell reactions is supplied to the spacecraft for crew use. Waste heat is rejected through a coolant loop to a spacecraft radiator. The ability of the fuel cell to meet its voltage-power requirements and to control its own operating temperature under the environmental extremes of launch, ascent, earth orbit, translunar flight, and lunar orbit was demonstrated on successively more difficult missions leading up to the first lunar landing.

Comparing the Electrical Modeling and Thermal Analysis Toolbox Simulation Data to Electrified Aircraft Propulsion Test Hardware Data

The Electrical Modeling and Thermal Analysis Toolbox (EMTAT), a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-developed Simulink™ model block library of electrical components developed with the goal of facilitating system-level control design and analysis, has two levels of fidelity depending on the test needs. The Physics Based model blocks are designed to use physical component characteristics to more accurately model real hardware, including power losses, efficiency, thermal effects, electromagnetic losses, voltage drops and current requirements. These blocks model electrical dynamics that occur at the millisecond turbomachinery time scale which allows for faster-than-real-time electrified turbomachinery simulations. A model was developed to mirror the Hybrid Propulsion Emulation Rig (HyPER) hardware, a laboratory focused on Electrified Aircraft Propulsion (EAP) hardware tests. The present hardware setup supports Turbine Electrified Energy Management (TEEM) testing. The outputs of the model were compared to the results of several tests on the HyPER laboratory motor-generator setup with the goal of matching the steady state simulation data to steady state hardware data within 5% of full scale. The objective of this paper is to present the background, setup, testing and results of this comparison. It will describe some of the adjustments that were necessary to match the system hardware, as well as next steps in verification and validation.

A New Approach to Indoor Characterization of PV Module Energy Yield Parameters

Temperature and solar irradiance are among the most relevant parameters that affect the energy yield of photovoltaic cells and modules. A rise in the module temperature leads to a significant decrease in the open circuit voltage and a small increase in the short circuit current. Here we use a new tool to determine temperature coefficients as well as to assess power rating of multi c-Si, mono c-Si, CdTe, and CIGS-based PV modules in controlled indoor conditions per IEC 60891 and IEC 61853-1. We use the tool to explore how nonuniformities in module temperature affect the accuracy of the temperature coefficients.

Caldera Infrastructure Charge Module (ICM)

Caldera ICM is part of Caldera software platform, a suite of collective, open-source tools that was developed to improve the state of the art in modeling the impacts of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging on the grid. The foundation of Caldera ICM is it’s first-of-its-kind library of high-fidelity charging models for a wide variety of vehicles, validated by test data under a range of operating conditions. The charging models are used to accurately model the EV charging on an electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) – also known as a charger. ICM uses as inputs, the EV characteristics such as battery size, battery chemistry (i.e. NMC, LTO), watt hour per mile, inverter efficiency and max charge rate; as well as EVSE characteristics such as max current and supply equipment type (i.e. L2 vs XFC). Using these inputs Caldera ICM creates an uncontrolled charging profile curve for each compatible EV-EVSE pair. These charge profiles can be used stand alone to estimate charge duration given start State Of Charge (SOC) and end SOC or charge energy size given start SOC and charge duration. In Caldera Grid, another tool in the Caldera software platform, these charge profiles are used to represent EV charging as a load on the grid using charge event data such as EV type, SE type, start SOC, final SOC, park start time and park end time. ICM currently supports energy shifting Smart Charge Management (SCM) strategies such as "Time Of Use (TOU) immediate”, “TOU random” and “random start” by delaying the charge to start at a preferable time with respect to the strategy and, one voltage support SCM strategy named autonomous voltage control strategy by providing reactive power back to the electric grid.
