Picosecond excite-and-probe absorption measurement of the intra-2E(g)E(3/2)-state vibrational relaxation time in Ti(3+):Al2O3

The Ti(3+)-doped Al2O3 has been recently demonstrated to be a tunable solid-state laser system with Ti(3+) as the laser-active ion. In this paper, the kinetics of vibrational transitions in the 2E(g)E(3/2) electronic state of Ti(3+):Al2O3a (crucial for characterizing new host materials for the Ti ion) was investigated. A 527-nm 5-ps pulse was used to excite a band of higher vibrational levels of the 2E(g)E(3/2) state, and the subsequent growth of population in the zero vibrational level and lower vibrational levels was monitored by a 3.9-micron picosecond probe pulse. The time evolution curve in the excited 2E(g)E(3/2) state at room temperature was found to be characterized by a sharp rise followed by a long decay, the long lifetime decay reflecting the depopulation of the zero and the lower vibrational levels of the 2E(g)E(3/2) state via radiative transitions. An upper limit of 3.5 ps was estimated for intra-2E(g)E(3/2)-state vibrational relaxation time.

Air- and oxygen-broadening coefficients for the O2 rotational line at 60.46/cm

Using an NBS laser-based tunable far-infrared spectrometer, the air- and oxygen-broadening coefficients were measured for the J = 10 - 10, N = 11 - 9 O2 rotational transition at 60.46/cm (1.812 THz). The air-broadening coefficient is 5.04 + or - 0.38 x 10 to the -7th/cm/Pa (0.0511 + or - 0.0039/cm/atm) (HWHM) at 245 + or - 6 K; the oxygen-broadening coefficient is 4.92 + or - 0.47 x 10 to the -7th/cm/Pa (0.0499 + or - 0.0048/cm/atm) (HWHM) at 259 + or -2 K. These direct experimental measurements of the air-broadening coefficient should improve the accuracy of retrieval calculations for far-infrared stratospheric balloon experiments which use O2 rotational lines to calibrate the viewing geometry.

Fiber-linked interferometric pressure sensor

A fiber-optic pressure sensor is described which uses a diaphragm to modulate the mirror separation of a Fabry-Perot cavity (the sensing cavity). A multimode optical fiber delivers broadband light to the sensing cavity and returns the spectrally modulated light which the cavity reflects. The sensor's output spectrum is analyzed using a tunable Fabry-Perot cavity (the reference cavity) to determine the mismatch in the mirror separations of the two cavities. An electronic servo control uses this result to cause the mirror separation of the reference cavity to equal that of the sensing cavity. The displacement of the pressure-sensing diaphragm is then obtained by measuring the capacitance of the reference cavity's metal-coated mirrors. Relative to other fiber-optic sensors, an important advantage of this instrument is its high immunity to the effects of variations in both the transmissivity of the fiber link and the wavelength of the optical source.

Carbon monoxide over the Amazon Basin during the 1985 dry season

During the Amazon Boundary Layer Experiment, approximately 100 hours of in situ carbon monoxide measurements were obtained using a tunable diode laser sensor that provided continuous, fast-response (about 1 s) measurements. This data set, taken on board the NASA Electra between July 12 and August 12, 1985, characterizes the temporal and spatial changes in the CO distribution over the Amazon Basin as meteorological conditions progressed from the early to middle phases of the 1985 day season. Early dry-season CO values of 75-95 ppbv were generally observed in the PBL. As the dry season became well established, biomass burning and a persistent capping inversion at about 3 km profoundly altered the CO distribution, with PBL values typically reaching 150-275 ppbv. Concentrations as high as 800 ppbv were measured within identifiable haze layers. An analysis of satellite imagery shows that biomass burning was occurring along the Amazon River system and in savannah areas located more than 1000 km south of the region sampled.

Measurements of air-broadened and nitrogen-broadened half-widths and shifts of ozone lines near 9 microns

Air- and nitrogen-broadened half-widths and line shifts at room temperature for more than 60 individual vibration-rotation transitions in the nu1 fundamental band of (O-16)3 and several transitions in the nu3 band were determined from infrared absorption spectra. These spectra were recorded at 0.005/cm resolution with a Fourier-transform spectrometer. A tunable-diode-laser spectrometer operating in the 1090-1150/cm region was also used to record data on oxygen-, nitrogen-, and air-broadened half-widths for selected individual transitions. The nitrogen- and air-broadened half-widths determined by these two different measurement techniques are consistent to within 4 percent. The results are in good agreement with other published measurements and calculations.

A solid state laser development program for remote atmospheric sensors

The current status of NASA Langley efforts to develop solid-state lasers for use in the Lidar Atmospheric Sounder and Altimeter (LASA) of the Space Station Earth Observing System is surveyed. The types of observations to be performed with LASA are listed, and the parameters of presently available lasers are compared with the LASA baseline goals: 2 kW output power; 500 kg weight; tunability to 727, 760, and 943 nm to within 500 fm; high spectral purity; efficiency greater than 3 percent; energy about 1 J/pulse, pulse length less than 100 nsec, and lifetime greater than 108 shots. The use of sensitized flashlamp-pumped laser materials or diode-laser pumping to improve performance is discussed, and particular attention is given to materials research on Ti:sapphire lasers, studies of higher-efficiency detectors, and the LASE and LITE airborne lidar and DIAL experiments.

Frequency measurement of the J = 1-0 rotational transition of HD

The frequency of the astronomically important J = 1-0 rotational transition of HD at 2.7 THz (90/cm) has been measured with tunable FIR radiation with an accuracy of 150 kHz. This frequency is now known to sufficient accuracy for use in future astrophysical heterodyne observations of HD in planetary atmospheres (reported by Bezard et al., 1986) and in the interstellar medium (reported by Bussoletti et al., 1975).

Stable-relaxation-oscillation Nd lasers for long-pulse generation

A simple method to produce high-energy neodymium (Nd) laser pulses with durations on the order of 1 microsec is described. Solid-state lasers can be pumped by relatively short flashlamp pulses to produce well-behaved relaxation oscillations in a diffraction-limited beam. Under the right conditons, each output laser pulse consists of a series of discrete subpulses that are ideally suited to efficient, high-energy amplification. Experimental results for an Nd:LiYF4 oscillator/amplifier system are presented along with numerical simulations. These demonstrate that the system operation is predictable and well behaved. Data are also included for a Nd:glass tunable oscillator based on this concept.

Southern Hemispheric nitrous oxide measurements obtained during 1987 airborne Antarctic ozone experiment

The chemical lifetime of N2O is about 150 years, which makes it an excellent dynamical tracer of air motion on the time scale of the ozone depletion event. For these reasons it was chosen to help test whether dynamical theories of ozone loss over Antarctica were plausible, particularly the theory that upwelling ozone-poor air from the troposphere was replacing ozone-rich stratospheric air. The N2O measurements were made with the Airborne Tunable Laser Absorption Spectrometer (ATLAS) aboard the NASA ER-2 aircraft. The detection technique involves measuring the diffential absorption of the IR laser radiation as it is rapidly scanned over an N2O absorption feature. For the AAOE mission, the instrument was capable of making measurements with a 1 ppb sensitivity, 1 second response time, over an altitude range of 10 to 20 kilometers. The AAOE mission consisted of a series of 12 flights from Punta Arenas (53S) into the polar vortex (approximately 72S) at which time a vertical profile from 65 to 45 km and back was performed. Comparison of the observed profiles inside the vortex with N2O profiles obtained by balloon flights during the austral summer showed that an overall subsidence had occurred during the winter of about 5 to 6 km. Also, over the course of the mission (mid-August to late September), no trend in the N2O vertical profile, either upward or downward, was discernible, eliminating the possibility that upwelling was the cause of the observed ozone decrease.

Optical Backplane Interconnect Technology (OBIT)

We describe and analyze a novel approach to implementing an Optical Backplane Interconnect Technology (OBIT) that is capable of optically connecting any row of a 32x32 backplane array to any row of a second 32x32 array. Each backplane array is formed monolithically on a wafer. The technology is based on the use of Grating Surface Emitting (GSE) waveguides formed on a wafer containing quantum-well and separate confinement waveguide layers. These layers are used for transverse guiding, gain, modulation, detection, and for the formation of wavelength tunable distributed-Bragg reflector lasers. The required surface structures are formed photolithographically. The GSE waveguides act as efficient antennae that radiate light at angles selected by tuning the wavelength of the lasers. The same waveguides may be used as the receiving antennae when the array is used in the receiving mode. Thus, wavelength tuning is used to direct each row of the transmitting array to the desired row of the receiving array. In summary: The optical backplane array will have the following characteristics: Any row of a 32x32 GSE array may be optically connected to any row of a second 32x32 array. Only one switch decision is required to switch 32 parallel connections to any one of 32 positions. Each monolithic array can be used as both transmitter and receiver by switching the bias on the quantum-well switch-detectors. Separate transmitting and receiving structures could be provided for duplex operation. For a bit error rate of 10 sup 9 at 100-MHz data rate, a required laser power of 12 mW is calculated based on an estimated total optical loss of 40 dB.

Development of the SAMEX vector magnetograph at the Marshall Space Flight Center

A breadboard design to prove the operational feasibility of SAMEX Vector Magnetograph is being developed. Although the breadboard design will not include all of the elements of the original design concept, critical elements such as the large detector array and the high resolution polarimeter will be important parts of the breadboard design to study the data analysis and compression techniques that will be needed in a SAMEX instrument, to study the calibration techniques for systemmatic errors in the polarimeter, and to obtain high resolution vector magnetograms during the next solar maximum. Although the SAMEX polarimeter is not optimum for a ground-based patrol instrument, the design concept can be confirmed with ground-based measurements and direct comparisons with the existing vector magnetograph. The extension of the scientific objectives for this breadboard design is possible if a tunable filter can be acquired.
