Tuning magnetic antiskyrmion stability in tetragonal inverse Heusler alloys

The identification of materials supporting complex, tunable magnetic order at ambient temperatures is foundational to the development of new magnetic device architectures. In this work, we report the design of Mn 2 XY tetragonal inverse Heusler alloys that are capable of hosting magnetic antiskyrmions whose stability is sensitive to elastic strain. Here We first construct a universal magnetic Hamiltonian capturing the short- and long-range magnetic order which can be expected in these materials. This model reveals critical combinations of magnetic interactions that are necessary to approach a magnetic phase boundary, where the magnetic structure is highly susceptible to small perturbations such as elastic strain. We then computationally search for quaternary Mn 2 (X 1 , X 2 ) Y alloys where these critical interactions may be realized and which are likely to be synthesizable in the inverse Heusler structure. We identify the Mn 2 Pt 1–z X z Ga family of materials with X = Au, Ir, Ni as an ideal system for accessing all possible magnetic phases, with several critical compositions where magnetic phase transitions may be actuated mechanically.

Proton spin from small-x with constraints from the valence quark model

We apply the valence quark model [1] to constrain the non-perturbative initial condition for the small-x helicity evolution. The remaining free parameters are constrained by performing a global analysis akin to [2] to the available polarized small-x deep inelastic scattering data. A good description of the world data is obtained with only 8 free parameters. The model parameters are tightly constrained by the data, allowing us to predict the proton polarized structure function $g^p_1$ to be negative at small x. Furthermore, we obtain the small-x quark and gluon spins to give a contribution $\int^{0.1}_{10^{-5}} dx (\frac{1}{2}\Delta\Sigma + \Delta{G}) = 0.63 ± 0.10$ or $1.35 ± 0.16$ (or to the proton spin, depending on the applied running coupling prescription.

Formation of Complex Spin Textures in Thermally Demagnetized La 0.7 Sr 0.3 Mn O 3 Artificial-Spin-Ice Structures

Artificial spin ices (ASIs) have traditionally been designed such that each nanomagnet possesses a single-domain magnetic configuration that is assumed to be minimally perturbed by interisland dipolar interactions. Using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy to perform magnetic domain imaging, we study thermally demagnetized La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 -based brickwork ASI arrays and showed that complex spin textures (CSTs) can be stabilized through an appropriate selection of nanoisland width and interisland spacing. While the width dependence can be explained through the dominance of shape anisotropy in isolated nanoislands, the ASIs we investigate demonstrate a complex dependence on both the nanoisland width and interisland spacing. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that interisland dipolar interactions play a role in the formation of CSTs, which are composed of single- and double-vortex states. Furthermore, energy analysis of the simulations provides an understanding of the system energetics that arises from a delicate balance between intraisland effects (i.e., shape anisotropy and exchange energy) and interisland effects (i.e., dipolar interactions between nearest-neighbor nanoislands).

Precursor of pair-density wave in doping Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice

Abstract We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction J K , which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the t - J K model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has a dominant quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. In the pairing channel, the even-parity superconducting correlation is dominant with d -wave-like symmetry, which oscillates in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the example where a pair-density wave is the leading instability in the pairing channel on the honeycomb lattice.

Electronic structure of Co 3 d states in the Kitaev material candidate honeycomb cobaltate Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 probed with x-ray dichroism

The recent prediction that honeycomb lattices of Co 2+ (3d 7 ) ions could host dominant Kitaev interactions provides an exciting direction for exploration of new routes to stabilizing Kitaev’s quantum spin liquid in real materials. Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 has been singled out as a potential material candidate provided that spin and orbital moments couple into a J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ ground state, and that the relative strength of trigonal crystal field and spin-orbit coupling acting on Co ions can be tailored. Using x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments, alongside configuration interaction calculations, we confirm the counterintuitive positive sign of the trigonal crystal field acting on Co 2+ ions and test the validity of the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ description of the electronic ground state. Furthermore, the results lend experimental support to recent theoretical predictions that a compression (elongation) of CoO 6 octahedra along (perpendicular to) the trigonal axis would drive this cobaltate toward the Kitaev limit, assuming the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ character of the electronic ground state is preserved.

Influence of the vertex region on spin dynamics in artificial Kagome spin ice.

We present experimental and theoretical studies of spin-wave mode dynamics in artificial kagome spin ice vertices made of three identical 15-nm thick elongated Ni80Fe20 nanoislands (macrospins). We consider several possible configurations, from completely disjointed macrospins (full dipolar interelement interac-tions) to fully jointed macrospins (full dipolar-exchange interactions). Using angular-resolved magnetic field dependent broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), we demonstrate the occurrence of a mode localized in the vertex region as indicated by the distinct behavior of the FMR spectra at different angles and configurations. Theoretical calculations using micromagnetic simulations support the existence, ori-gin, and behavior of this mode by interpreting it as a localized, quasi-uniform Kittel mode. Our findings pave the way for designing the most appropriate network consisting of ferromagnetic nanomagnets for specific application purposes in magnonics.

Spin-up studies of the Space Shuttle Orbiter main gear tire

One of the factors needed to describe the wear behavior of the Space Shuttle Orbiter main gear tires is their behavior during the spin-up process. An experimental investigation of tire spin-up processes was conducted at the NASA Langley Research Center's Aircraft Landing Dynamics Facility. During the investigation, the influence of various parameters such as forward speed and sink speed on tire spin-up forces were evaluated. A mathematical model was developed to estimate drag forces and spin-up times and is presented. The effect of prerotation was explored and is discussed. Also included is a means of determining the sink speed of the orbiter at touchdown based upon the appearance of the rubber deposits left on the runway during spinup.

Perturbative instability of nonergodic phases in non-Abelian quantum chains

An important challenge in the field of many-body quantum dynamics is to identify nonergodic states of matter beyond many-body localization (MBL). Strongly disordered spin chains with non-Abelian symmetry and chains of non-Abelian anyons are natural candidates, as they are incompatible with standard MBL. In such chains, real space renormalization group methods predict a partially localized, nonergodic regime known as a quantum critical glass (a critical variant of MBL). Here, this regime features a treelike hierarchy of integrals of motion and symmetric eigenstates with entanglement entropy that scales as a logarithmically enhanced area law. We argue that such tentative nonergodic states are perturbatively unstable using an analytic computation of the scaling of off-diagonal matrix elements and accessible level spacing of local perturbations. Our results indicate that strongly disordered chains with non-Abelian symmetry display either spontaneous symmetry breaking or ergodic thermal behavior at long times. We identify the relevant length and timescales for thermalization: Even if such chains eventually thermalize, they can exhibit nonergodic dynamics up to parametrically long timescales with a nonanalytic dependence on disorder strength.

Tunable momentum pair creation of spin excitations in dipolar bilayers

Here we study the temporal growth and spatial propagation of quantum correlations in a two-dimensional bilayer realizing a spin-1/2 quantum XXZ model with couplings mediated by long-range and anisotropic dipolar interactions. Starting with an initial state consisting of spins with opposite magnetization in each of the layers, we predict a dynamic instability that results, at short times, in the creation of correlated pairs of excitations at specific momenta at exponentially fast rates and entanglement between spatially separated modes. The momentum structure of the created pairs can be controlled via the dipolar orientation, the layer separation, or the dipolar couplings. The predicted behavior remains observable at very low filling fractions, making it accessible in state-of-the-art experiments with Rydberg atoms, magnetic atoms, and polar molecule arrays.

Discriminating Accretion States via Rotational Symmetry in Simulated Polarimetric Images of M87

In 2017 April, the Event Horizon Telescope observed the shadow of the supermassive black hole at the core of the elliptical galaxy Messier 87. While the original image was constructed from measurements of the total intensity, full polarimetric data were also collected, and linear polarimetric images are expected in the near future. We propose a modal image decomposition of the linear polarization field into basis functions with varying azimuthal dependence of the electric vector position angle. We apply this decomposition to images of ray traced general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations of the Messier 87 accretion disk. Furthermore, for simulated images that are physically consistent with previous observations, the magnitude of the coefficient associated with rotational symmetry, β2, is a useful discriminator between accretion states. We find that at 20 μas resolution, $| {\beta }_{2}| $ is greater than 0.2 only for models of disks with horizon-scale magnetic pressures large enough to disrupt steady accretion. We also find that images with a more radially directed electric vector position angle correspond to models with higher black hole spin. Our analysis demonstrates the utility of the proposed decomposition as a diagnostic framework to improve constraints on theoretical models.

Pseudo Linear Attitude Determination of Spinning Spacecraft

This paper presents the overall mathematical model and results from pseudo linear recursive estimators of attitude and rate for a spinning spacecraft. The measurements considered are vector measurements obtained by sun-sensors, fixed head star trackers, horizon sensors, and three axis magnetometers. Two filters are proposed for estimating the attitude as well as the angular rate vector. One filter, called the q-Filter, yields the attitude estimate as a quaternion estimate, and the other filter, called the D-Filter, yields the estimated direction cosine matrix. Because the spacecraft is gyro-less, Euler's equation of angular motion of rigid bodies is used to enable the estimation of the angular velocity. A simpler Markov model is suggested as a replacement for Euler's equation in the case where the vector measurements are obtained at high rates relative to the spacecraft angular rate.

Noncollinear Ground State from a Four-Spin Chiral Exchange in a Tetrahedral Magnet

We propose a quartic chiral term m x m y m z ∇ • m for the energy density of a cubic ferromagnet with broken parity symmetry (point group T d ). We demonstrate that this interaction causes a phase transition from a collinear ferromagnetic state to a noncollinear magnetic cone ground state provided its strength exceeds the geometric mean of magnetic exchange and cubic anisotropy. The corresponding noncollinear ground state may also be additionally stabilized by an external magnetic field pointing along certain crystallographic directions. Here, the four-spin chiral exchange does also manifest itself in peculiar magnon spectra and favors spin waves with the wave vector that is perpendicular to the average magnetization direction.

Spin Quantization in Heavy Ion Collision

We analyzed recent experimental data on the disassembly of 28Si into 7α in terms of a hybrid α-cluster model. We calculated the probability of breaking into several α-like fragments for high l-spin values for identical and non-identical spin zero nuclei. Resonant energies were found for each l-value and compared to the data and other theoretical models. Toroidal-like structures were revealed in coordinate and momentum space when averaging over many events at high l. The transition from quantum to classical mechanics is highlighted.

Experimental and Analytical Study of Rolling-Velocity Amplification during the Thrusting Process for Two 10-Inch-Diameter Spherical Rocket Motors in Free Flight

Two 10-inch-diameter spherical rocket motors have been flight tested at the NASA Wallops Station. These tests were conducted to measure "spin-up" or amplification of the spinning velocity of the motor during the thrusting process due to internal swirling of the exhaust gases. Model 1, a heavy-wall motor, experienced an increase in spin rate during thrusting of about 10 percent, whereas model 2, a flight-type motor with a lightweight motor case, experienced an increase of about 19 percent. The propellant weight and geometry were the same for both motors. A simple relationship for "spin-up" which satisfies these measured results is reported herein. Both models were spin stabilized throughout their flights. A theoretical method of predicting spin-up was derived and used to extend the measured 10-inch-motor results to spherical rocket motors of other sizes having a similar propellant geometry. This method is presented and its predictions are shown to compare favorably with the measured flight results.

A compendium of sphere path integrals

We study the manifestly covariant and local 1-loop path integrals on S d+1 for general massive, shift-symmetric and (partially) massless totally symmetric tensor fields of arbitrary spin s ≥ 0 in any dimensions d ≥ 2. After reviewing the cases of massless fields with spin s = 1, 2, we provide a detailed derivation for path integrals of massless fields of arbitrary integer spins s ≥ 1. Following the standard procedure of Wick-rotating the negative conformal modes, we find a higher spin analog of Polchinski’s phase for any integer spin s ≥ 2. The derivations for low-spin (s = 0, 1, 2) massive, shift-symmetric and partially massless fields are also carried out explicitly. Finally, we provide general prescriptions for general massive and shift-symmetric fields of arbitrary integer spins and partially massless fields of arbitrary integer spins and depths.

The kinetics of the reactions of ground-state NH with N 2 O and implications for ammonia combustion

Quantum chemistry and canonical transition state theory have been applied to derive rate constants k for reactions of 3 Σ − imidogen with nitrous oxide. 3 channels were quantified. The fastest leads to NNH+NO and may be summarized as k = 2.8 × 10 7 T 1.68 exp.(−23.1 kcal mol −1 /RT) cm 3 mole −1 s −1 . Two much slower pathways lead to N 2 + 3 HNO and spin-forbidden 1 HNO. Modeling of literature data, from an NH 3 /O 2 flame and jet-stirred reactor measurements on dilute NH 3 /N 2 O mixtures, with the new kinetic information suggests that these channels are too slow to consume N 2 O significantly, and confirms that a widely used proposed rate constant for NH+N 2 O overestimates the reactivity.

Inversion of dislocation-impurity interactions in α -Fe under magnetic state changes

Here, in this work, we investigate the dislocation-impurity interaction energies and their profiles for various 3d elements —V, Cr, Mn, Cu, Ni, and Co —in and around 1/2 $\langle111\rangle$ screw dislocations in α -Fe using ab initio methods. We consider the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, with the latter being modeled through both the disordered local moment model and a spin-wave approach. Our findings reveal that (1) magnetic effects are large compared to size misfit effects of substitutional impurities, and (2) dislocation-impurity interactions are dependent on the magnetic state of the matrix and thermal lattice expansion. In particular, Cu changes from core-attractive in the ferromagnetic state to repulsive in the paramagnetic state.
