Solution growth of crystals in zero gravity

A series of experiments will be performed in which triglycine sulfate (TGS) crystals will be grown by a low-temperature solution growth technique in the microgravity environment of the orbital Spacelab. Triglycine sulfate (TGS) crystals will be grown in the Fluid Experiment System (FES) facility on Spacelab 3 by slowly extracting heat at a controlled rate through a seed crystal of TGS suspended on an insulated sting in a saturated solution of TGS. The FES rack assembly designed for SL-3 is shown in Figure I-1, and a detailed view of the test cell layout is presented in Figure I-2. Variations in the liquid density, solution concentration and temperature around the growing crystal will be studied using a variety of techniques, such as schlieren, shadowgraph, and interferometric measurements. Growth in Earth gravity will also be studied by the same optical techniques, and in both cases the resulting crystalline features will be compared and correlated with the growth conditions.

The development and manufacture of wood composite wind turbine rotors

The physical properties, operational experience, and construction methods of the wood/epoxy composite MOD 0A wind turbine blades are considered. Blades of this type have accumulated over 10,000 hours of successful operation at the Kahuku, Hawaii and Block Island, Rhode Island test sites. That body of experience is summarized and related to the structural concepts and design drivers which motivated the original design and choice of interior layout. Actual manufacturing experience and associated low first unit costs for these blades, as well as projections for high production rates, are presented. Application of these construction techniques to a wide range of other blade sizes is also considered.

Human factors analysis of workstation design: Earth Radiation Budget Satellite Mission Operations Room

A human factors analysis addressed three related yet distinct issues within the area of workstation design for the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) mission operation room (MOR). The first issue, physical layout of the MOR, received the most intensive effort. It involved the positioning of clusters of equipment within the physical dimensions of the ERBS MOR. The second issue for analysis was comprised of several environmental concerns, such as lighting, furniture, and heating and ventilation systems. The third issue was component arrangement, involving the physical arrangement of individual components within clusters of consoles, e.g., a communications panel.

Aeroacoustic research facilities at NASA Langley Research Center: Description and operational characteristics

A number of facilities were developed which provide unique test capabilities for aeroacoustic research. Information regarding physical layouts, dimensions, construction features, and operating capabilities of these facilities is compiled. Possible research applications include the behavior of such noise sources as jets, rotors, and propellers in simulated forward motion; studies of noise due to the interactions of aerodynamic flows with solid surfaces and bodies; sound propagation in ducts with airflow; and the evaluation of acoustical materials.

Scanning beam antenna conceptual design for 20/30 GHz satellite systems

The configuration described is one of four antenna system configurations developed using a variety of monolithic microwave integrated circuit module arrangements and optical systems. A parametric analysis is expected to produce a data base for the selection of design points for a variety of applications. Soon to be accomplished is the design concept of the active (lens) array, which will take into consideration such factors as, coupling effects, the space-fed power divider network design, input bias and control layout, investigation of thermal distribution, and analysis of module failure (graceful degradation).

Test chips for custom ICs - Six kinds of test structures

Microelectronic test chips contain a number of test structures that are used for a variety of purposes in fabricating integrated circuits. For convenience, their use is divided into six groups: layout-rule evaluating, process-parameter extraction, device-parameter extraction, circuit-parameter extraction, initial-fabrication failure analysis, and reliability failure analysis. A given test structure can be used to gather information in a number of these groups. Examples are given here of the kinds of parameters that can be obtained in each of these groups. A table is included summarizing various device failures common to bulk CMOS and indicating failure mechanisms appearing after wafer fabrication and after stress.

Structural optimization - Challenges and opportunities

A review of developments in structural optimization techniques and their interface with growing computer capabilities is presented. Structural design steps comprise functional definition of an object, an evaluation phase wherein external influences are quantified, selection of the design concept, material, object geometry, and the internal layout, and quantification of the physical characteristics. Optimization of a fully stressed design is facilitated by use of nonlinear mathematical programming which permits automated definition of the physics of a problem. Design iterations terminate when convergence is acquired between mathematical and physical criteria. A constrained minimum algorithm has been formulated using an Augmented Lagrangian approach and a generalized reduced gradient to obtain fast convergence. Various approximation techniques are mentioned. The synergistic application of all the methods surveyed requires multidisciplinary teamwork during a design effort.

Downsizing assessment of automotive Stirling engines

A 67 kW (90 hp) Stirling engine design, sized for use in a 1984 1440 kg (3170 lb) automobile was the focal point for developing automotive Stirling engine technology. Since recent trends are towards lighter vehicles, an assessment was made of the applicability of the Stirling technology being developed for smaller, lower power engines. Using both the Philips scaling laws and a Lewis Research Center (Lewis) Stirling engine performance code, dimensional and performance characteristics were determined for a 26 kW (35 hp) and a 37 kW (50 hp) engine for use in a nominal 907 kg (2000 lb) vehicle. Key engine elements were sized and stressed and mechanical layouts were made to ensure mechanical fit and integrity of the engines. Fuel economy estimates indicated that the Stirling engine would maintain a 30 to 45 percent fuel economy advantage comparable spark ignition and diesel powered vehicles in the 1984 period.

An improved logarithmic amplifier circuit for PDS microdensitometers

A high speed logarithmic amplifier circuit for the Perkin-Elmer PDS microdensitometer is discussed. The circuit is designed around an Analog Devices 757p log-amp module. The amplifier produces undistorted profiles of rapidly changing, dense ( 4) images over the available range of scanning speeds. The circuit board was designed to replace directly the manufacturer supplied unit; neither electrical nor mechanical modifications of the basic PDS are required. The performance of the circuit is illustrated through its effects on the overall modulation transfer function of the instrument and by scans of a well exposed stellar image. Circuit diagrams and parts lists a mechanism for obtaining either circuit board layout art work or finished circuit boards are presented.
