Screening and Identifying High-Suitability Offshore CCUS Storage Areas in the Gulf of Mexico Using a Multi-Criteria Evaluation Approach

Poster presented at a virtual meeting for the AAPG Annual Conference and Exhibition held in Houston, Texas, September 29 to October 1, 2020. The poster describes a method to analyze multiple criteria defining potentially suitable CO2 saline storage sites or CO2-EOR sites with associated storage of CO2 in the Gulf of Mexico. These sites would require further analysis and characterization.

Identifying Pathways for Enhanced Collaboration Between the Mining and Geothermal Industries

The locatable mineral industry is shifting toward improving environmental performance and becoming more sustainable, with numerous mining companies shifting to renewable energy technologies to power mine operations and at least one company pledging net-zero emissions by 2050. One potential electricity source to help achieve improved environmental performance and decarbonization within the mining industry is geothermal energy. As part of a study into potential collaboration between the geothermal and locatable mineral industries (focused on the portion of the Basin and Range Province within Nevada), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) with support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO), investigated data, economic, and regulatory factors that may contribute to or inhibit synergies between the two industries. The objectives of the study included analyzing: The type and quality of data collected by the locatable mineral industry to determine feasibility for geothermal resource exploration; The regulatory pathways and potential barriers that could prevent development of geothermal resources discovered via a mining claim (and vice versa); The historical development of geothermal resources discovered via mineral exploration data; The value propositions for both the locatable mineral and the geothermal industries to collaborate.

Methods for identifying interactions amongst microorganisms

Disclosed herein are methods, compositions, and systems for determining specific microbial taxa, within a complex consortia of mixed taxa, which are interacting with each other in an environment of interest. In some embodiments, after diluting a sample comprising multiple different taxa of microorganisms, dilutions of the sample are cultivated for determining taxonomic information and interactions of multiple taxa of microorganisms in the sample.

Building Energy Modeling Enhancements to Identify Least-Cost Pathways to Net-Zero Carbon Homes: Preprint

Residential grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs) can utilize high levels of energy efficiency and demand flexibility to deliver value to occupants, the grid, and society. However, without the ability to analyze, design, and optimize residential GEBs there is a risk that homes will not realize their full potential value as efficient and dynamic resources, which could ultimately lead to higher than necessary energy costs for U.S. households and lower realization of potential energy efficiency and demand flexibility benefits such as increased convenience/automation, thermal comfort, durability, indoor air quality, and resilience. In 2018, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Residential Modeling Team developed a vision for an open source Residential GEB Analytics Platform built within DOE's EnergyPlus and OpenStudio modeling environment that would enable the design and optimization of residential GEBs, including the identification of least-cost pathways to highly energy-efficient and energy-flexible homes (e.g., net zero carbon homes). We created a detailed workplan for the development of new and enhanced residential GEB component-level models for EnergyPlus and OpenStudio needed to progress toward the vision for the analytics platform while delivering near-term benefits to industry. This paper 1) presents the vision for the platform, summarizing the workplan for residential GEB modeling enhancements; 2) highlights significant advancements that have been achieved between 2018 and 2022, including stochastic residential occupancy modeling, flexible water heater modeling, detailed lithium-ion stationary battery modeling, and realistic residential HVAC modeling; and 3) outlines ongoing efforts and next steps toward the full vision for the platform.
