Structure Sensitivity and Catalyst Restructuring for CO2 Electro-reduction on Copper

Abstract Cu is the most promising metal catalyst for CO 2 electroreduction (CO 2 RR) to multi-carbon products, yet the structure sensitivity of the reaction and the stability versus restructuring of the catalyst surface under reaction conditions remain controversial. Here, atomic scale simulations of surface energies and reaction pathway kinetics supported by experimental evidence unveil that CO 2 RR does not take place on perfect planar Cu(111) and Cu(100) surfaces but rather on steps or kinks. These planar surfaces tend to restructure in reaction conditions to the active stepped surfaces, with the strong binding of CO on defective sites acting as a thermodynamic driving force. Notably, we identify that the square motifs adjacent to defects, not the defects themselves, as the active sites for CO 2 RR via synergistic effect. We evaluate these mechanisms against experiments of CO 2 RR on ultra-high vacuum-prepared ultraclean Cu surfaces, uncovering the crucial role of step-edge orientation in steering selectivity. Overall, our study refines the structural sensitivity of CO 2 RR on Cu at the atomic level, highlights the self-activation mechanism and elucidates the origin of in situ restructuring of Cu surfaces during the reaction.

Laser-based conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy of 229 ThO 2

The exceptionally low-energy 229 Th nuclear isomeric state is expected to provide several new and powerful applications, including the construction of a robust and portable solid-state nuclear clock, perhaps contributing to a redefinition of the second, exploration of nuclear superradiance and tests of fundamental physics. Further, analogous to the capabilities of traditional Mössbauer spectroscopy, the sensitivity of the nucleus to its environment can be used to realize laser Mössbauer spectroscopy and, with it, new types of strain and temperature sensors and a new probe of the solid-state environment, all with excellent sensitivity. However, current models for examining the nuclear transition in a solid require the use of a high-bandgap, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmissive host, severely limiting the applicability of these techniques. Here we report the first, to the authors’ knowledge, demonstration of laser-induced conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) of the 229 Th isomer in a thin ThO 2 sample whose bandgap (approximately 6 eV) is considerably smaller than the nuclear isomeric state energy (8.4 eV). Unlike fluorescence spectroscopy of the 229 Th isomeric transition, this technique is compatible with materials whose bandgap is less than the nuclear transition energy, opening a wider class of systems to study and the potential of a conversion-electron-based nuclear clock.

Chemical and Chemical-Mechanical Polishing of Surface Roughness on L-PBF/GRCop-42 Cu-Cr-Nb Additive Manufactured 10-GHz RF Structures

Laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF) allows additive manufacture (AM) of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) radio-frequency (RF) launchers from Glenn Research Copper, a Cr 2 Nb precipitation-hardened alloy (GRCop-42) in configurations unachievable with conventional machining. Rough surfaces in AM components increase RF losses and lead to arcing in high-power vacuum RF applications. Chemical polishing, chemical-mechanical polishing, or a combination of both were utilized to planarize the internal surfaces of RF structures, resulting in surface roughness as low as R a = 0.2 µm. Refinement in polishing techniques now enables GRCop-42 alloys (4 at. % Cr, 2 at. % Nb) to achieve similar surface roughness to GRCop-84 (8 at. % Cr, 4 at. % Nb) and equivalent cavity losses to extruded oxygen-free copper waveguides at 10 GHz.

Transformational Sorbent System for Post-Combustion Carbon Capture (Final Report)

As part of this DOE Contract (Transformational Sorbent System for Post-Combustion Carbon Capture, DE-FE0031734),TDA Research Inc. developed a transformational sorbent system for post combustion CO 2 capture process that captures more than 95% of CO 2 emissions from a coal fired power plant, recovering CO 2 at 95% purity with a cost of CO 2 capture significantly lower than with amine-based system (~$30 per tonne (MT) of CO 2 captured). TDA’s transformational sorbent system uses a novel, highly stable, high-capacity metal organic framework (MOF) based CO 2 sorbent in a new vacuum/concentration swing adsorption (VCSA) process that allows us to use high efficiency vacuum pumps with a low auxiliary load. A pulverized coal fired power plant equipped with TDA’s transformational sorbent system for post combustion CO 2 capture is expected to efficiently produce electricity with a low Cost of Electricity (COE) and capture greater than 95% of the CO 2 from the power plant exhaust.

Symmetry Breaking in the Lowest-Lying Excited-State of CCl4: Valence Shell Spectroscopy in the 5.0–10.8 eV Photon Energy Range

We report absolute high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption cross-sections of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in the photon energy range 5.0–10.8 eV (248–115 nm). The molecular spectrum and electronic structure have been comprehensively investigated together with quantum chemical calculations, providing geometries, bond lengths, vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The major electronic excitations have been assigned to valence and Rydberg transitions which are also accompanied by vibrational excitation assigned to degenerate stretching, v3′t2 and degenerate deformation v4′t2 modes. The rather complex nuclear dynamics along the degenerate deformation mode, v4′t2, have been thoroughly investigated by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) method. The relevant Jahn–Teller distortion operative within the lowest-lying electronic excited-state is shown here for the first time in order to yield a weak absorption feature at 6.156 eV. Further calculations on the potential energy curves for the singlet excited-states along the C–Cl stretching coordinate show the relevance of efficient C–Cl bond excision.

3 nu sub 3 band of C-12H4 at 1.1 micron.

The 3 nu sub 3 absorption band of C-12H4 has been measured using a high-resolution vacuum infrared spectrometer. A technique is described which allows an extension of the use of the absorption standards available at 4.7 microns to the photomultiplier region of the spectrum. The new measurements indicate a shift of about 0.18 per cm from the most recently published measurements of this band.

Space processing of electronic materials

The relative values of thermal conductivity of solid and liquid HgCdTe are critically important in the design configuration of the furnaces used for Bridgman crystal growth. The thermal diffusivity of the material is closely linked to the conductivity by the defining relation D = k/rho c, where D is the diffusivity, K is the thermal conductivity, rho is the density, and c is the specific heat. The use of transient and periodic heating approaches to measure the diffusivity are explored. A system for securing and extracting heat from silica or glass tubes under high C vacuum conditions is described.
