Apparatus for production, measurement and reaction studies of dissociated gases at elevated temperatures

An apparatus is described which is used for the controlled production, characterization, and study of dissociated gases in a microwave discharge at elevated temperatures. A unique feature is the ability to produce and study a microwave discharge plasma in the heated zone. This allows elevated temperature reactions to be studied in high concentrations of dissociated gases. Further, the system permits weight change measurements of specimens in the plasma, thus facilitating reaction rate determinations. Included is a description of a cavity for use on a 50-mm diameter cylindrical reactor. The effects of flow rate, pressure, temperature, power, metal sample, and sampling position on dissociation percentage of oxygen in the apparatus are described as well as a technique for sample temperature measurements in the plasma which permits determination of high temperature recombination coefficients and reaction rates.

Phenomenological treatments of cross-sections for proton and hydrogen impact below 1 keV on molecular nitrogen

An analytic independent-particle model is used to construct static potentials to describe the interaction of hydrogen-like ions with atoms and molecules. Parameters of the ion-atom potential are determined from ab initio total energy minimization procedure. The elastic scattering of He(+) from Ne and Ar is investigated as a test case and comparison is made with experiment. The model is then used in conjunction with low energy H(+)-N2 experimental data to construct differential and total cross-sections for the scattering of protons and hydrogen in the energy range of 10 eV to 1 keV from molecular nitrogen. Analytic forms are used to parametrize these cross-sections to facilitate their use in the calculation of energy deposition by protons and hydrogen atoms in atmospheric gases.

Digital vibration control techniques

Analog vibration control techniques are reviewed and are compared with digital techniques. The advantages of the digital methods over the analog methods are demonstrated. The following topics are covered: (1) methods of computer-controlled random vibration and reverberation acoustic testing; (2) methods of computer-controlled sinewave vibration testing; and (3) methods of computer-controlled shock testing. Basic concepts are stressed rather than specific techniques or equipment. General algorithms are described in the form of block diagrams and flow diagrams. Specific problems and potential problems are discussed. The material is computer sciences oriented but is kept at a level that facilitates an understanding of the basic concepts of computer-controlled induced environmental test systems.

High Reynolds number transonic flow simulation

A code has been developed for simulating high Reynolds number transonic flow fields of arbitrary configuration. An explicit finite-difference method with time splitting is used to solve the time-dependent equations for compressible turbulent flow. A nonorthogonal computational mesh of arbitrary configuration facilitates the description of the flow field. The code is applied to simulate the flow over a two-dimensional 18 percent thick circular-arc biconvex airfoil at zero angle of attack for several different Reynolds numbers and a free-stream Mach number of 0.775.

Some environmental problems and their satellite monitoring

Anthropogenic modification of the earth's surface is discussed in two problem areas: (1) land use changes and overgrazing, and how it affects albedo and land surface-atmosphere interactions, and (2) water and land surface pollution, especially oil slicks. A literature survey evidences the importance of these problems. The need for monitoring is stressed, and it is suggested that with some modifications to the sensors, ERTS (Landsat) series satellites can provide approximate monitoring information. The European Landsat receiving station in Italy will facilitate data collection for the tasks described.

Application of real-time engine simulations to the development of propulsion system controls

The development of digital controls for turbojet and turbofan engines can be facilitated by the use of real-time computer simulations of the engines. The engine simulation provides a 'test-bed' for evaluating new control laws and for checking and 'debugging' control software and hardware prior to engine testing. This paper describes the development and use of real-time, hybrid computer simulations of the Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-3 and F100-PW-100 augmented turbofans in support of a number of controls research programs at the Lewis Research Center. The role of engine simulations in solving the propulsion systems integration problem is also discussed.

Cost reductions through earth resource satellites in developed countries

Data from detailed studies on the possible economic impact of the use of remote sensing technology in industry and agriculture are presented and analyzed. The utility of satellite surveillance in reduction of crop production forecast error, recognition and monitoring of crop diseases and insect infestations, and range management is evaluated. Application of satellite maps to facilitate land resource decisions, mineral exploration, geological studies, and water resource inventories is considered, as is the usefulness of early storm warning in the reduction of property damage. The cost of remote sensing is compared to that of conventional methods whenever possible.

The transformation of aerodynamic stability derivatives by symbolic mathematical computation

The formulation of mathematical models of aeronautical systems for simulation or other purposes, involves the transformation of aerodynamic stability derivatives. It is shown that these derivatives transform like the components of a second order tensor having one index of covariance and one index of contravariance. Moreover, due to the equivalence of covariant and contravariant transformations in orthogonal Cartesian systems of coordinates, the transformations can be treated as doubly covariant or doubly contravariant, if this simplifies the formulation. It is shown that the tensor properties of these derivatives can be used to facilitate their transformation by symbolic mathematical computation, and the use of digital computers equipped with formula manipulation compilers. When the tensor transformations are mechanised in the manner described, man-hours are saved and the errors to which human operators are prone can be avoided.

Man in space - A time for perspective

Factors affecting crew performances in long-term space flights are examined with emphasis on the Space Shuttle-Spacelab program. Biomedical investigations carried out during four Skylab missions indicate that initially rapid changes in certain physiological parameters, notably in cardiovascular response and red-blood-cell levels, lead to an adapted condition. Calcium loss remains a potential problem. Space Shuttle environmental control and life-support systems are described together with technology facilitating performance of mission objectives in a weightless environment. It is concluded that crew requirements are within the physical and psychological capability of astronauts, but the extent to which nonastronaut personnel will be able to participate without extensive training and pre-conditioning remains to be determined.

Supersonic CO electric-discharge lasers

Laser modeling activity is described which involved addition of an option allowing N2 as a second diatomic gas. This option is now operational and a few test cases involving N2/CO mixtures were run. Results from these initial test cases are summarized. In the laboratory, a CW double-discharge test facility was constructed and tested. Features include: water-cooled removable electrodes, O-ring construction to facilitate cleaning and design modifications, increased discharge length, and addition of a post-discharge observation section. Preliminary tests with this facility using N2 yielded higher power loadings than obtained in the first-generation facility. Another test-section modification, recently made and as yet untested, will permit injection of secondary gases into the cathode boundary layer. The objective will be to vary and enhance the UV emission spectrum from the auxiliary discharge, thereby influencing the level of photoionization in the main discharge region.

A General Simulator Using State Estimation for a Space Tug Navigation System

A general simulation program is presented (GSP) involving nonlinear state estimation for space vehicle flight navigation systems. A complete explanation of the iterative guidance mode guidance law, derivation of the dynamics, coordinate frames, and state estimation routines are given so as to fully clarify the assumptions and approximations involved so that simulation results can be placed in their proper perspective. A complete set of computer acronyms and their definitions as well as explanations of the subroutines used in the GSP simulator are included. To facilitate input/output, a complete set of compatable numbers, with units, are included to aid in data development. Format specifications, output data phrase meanings and purposes, and computer card data input are clearly spelled out. A large number of simulation and analytical studies were used to determine the validity of the simulator itself as well as various data runs.

The LAGEOS system

The LAGEOS system is defined and its rationale is developed. Key features of the baseline system specified included a circular orbit at 5900 km altitude and an inclination of 110 deg, and a satellite 60 cm in diameter weighing some 385 kg and mounting 440 retroreflectors, each having a diameter of 3.8 cm, leaving 30% of the spherical surface available for reflecting sunlight diffusely to facilitate tracking by Baker-Nunn cameras. The satellite weight was increased to 411 kg in the actual design through the addition of a 4th-stage apogee-kick motor. The number and diameter of the retroreflectors are now 426 and 3.81 cm, respectively. The net effect of these partially compensating changes is not significant. The diffusely reflecting area was increased to 47% of the satellite surface.

Contextual approach to technology assessment: Implications for one-factor fix solutions to complex social problems

The contextual approach is discussed which undertakes to demonstrate that technology assessment assists in the identification of the full range of implications of taking a particular action and facilitates the consideration of alternative means by which the total affected social problem context might be changed by available project options. It is found that the social impacts of an application on participants, institutions, processes, and social interests, and the accompanying interactions may not only induce modifications in the problem contest delineated for examination with respect to the design, operations, regulation, and use of the posited application, but also affect related social problem contexts.
