Physical properties of 𝑅⁢ Co 2 ⁢Al 8 single crystals (𝑅 = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) : An emerging structure-type for anisotropic Kondo-lattice studies

Systematic investigations of rare-earth (𝑅)-based intermetallic materials are a leading strategy to reveal the underlying mechanisms governing a range of physical phenomena, such as the formation of a Kondo lattice and competing electronic and magnetic anisotropies. Here, in this work, the magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of 𝑅⁢Co 2 ⁢Al 8 (𝑅 = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) single crystals are presented. LaCo 2 ⁢Al 8 is characterized as a Pauli paramagnet, and transport measurements, with the current along and perpendicular to the orthorhombic 𝑐-axis (𝜌 𝑐 and 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 , respectively), reveal a clear electronic anisotropy, with 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 ⁢≈ (4 –7)⁢𝜌 𝑐 at 300K . We show that CeCo 2 ⁢Al 8 is a Kondo lattice for which the Kondo coherence temperature 𝑇$^*_K$, deduced from broad maximums in 𝜌 𝑐 and 𝜌 𝑎⁢𝑏 at ≈ 68 and 46 K, respectively, is also anisotropic. This finding is related to a possible underlying anisotropy of the Kondo coupling in CeCo 2⁢ Al 8 . The Pr- and Nd-based materials present strong easy-axis anisotropy (𝑐-axis) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders below 𝑇 = 4.84 and 8.1K , respectively. Metamagnetic transitions from this AFM to a spin-polarized paramagnetic phase state are investigated by isothermal magnetization measurements. The Sm-based compound is also an easy-axis AFM with a transition at 𝑇 = 21.6K .

Accelerating Lossy and Lossless Compression on Emerging BlueField DPU Architectures

Data compression has become a crucial technique in addressing performance bottlenecks caused by increasing data volumes in High-Performance Computing (HPC), Big Data, and Deep Learning (DL). Despite its potential to boost system performance, recent studies have identified significant challenges with existing compression methods, mainly due to their high computational demands amidst continuously growing data sizes. Concurrently, the advent of Data Processing Units (DPUs), equipped with programmable System-on-Chip (SoC) and specialized compression accelerators, offers a promising opportunity to alter the landscape of data compression. This paper explores the complexities and potential of leveraging NVIDIA BlueField DPUs to accelerate lossy and lossless compression. Towards this, we introduce PEDAL, an innovative library that leverages the hardware capabilities of DPUs to unify and optimize data compression designs. Moreover, we seamlessly co-design PEDAL with the popular MPICH MPI library, demonstrating up to 101x speedup in compression time and 88x decrease in communication latency. Drawing on these achievements, we share our experience with various research communities about accelerating data compression on DPUs in communication-oriented HPC scenarios.

Guest Editorial Special Issue on Emerging Topics of Power Electronics Interfaced Battery Energy Storage System

No doubt, battery energy storage systems have been the enabling solution to balance generation and consumption of power systems with high-penetration renewable energy resources, long-range electric vehicles, and various smart devices. Upon the battery has been manufactured, the rest of implementation issues become how to interface battery and related systems, how to regulate the charging/discharging power, and how to keep battery energy storage systems (BESSs) safe, reliable, and long-term service. In this editorial, we discuss how power electronic converters and associated control and optimization, which can maximize the value of BESSs, are devoted to provide cost-effective, efficient, and even revolutionary technologies.

Emergency Voltage Regulation in Power Systems via Ripple-Type Control

With increasing penetrations of volatile renewable generation and cyber-physical disruptions, ensuring the safe operation of bulk power systems has become unprecedentedly challenging. Because communication and computational costs restrict centralized system dispatch to being called upon every few minutes, and because purely local schemes are shown to be insufficient, distributed controls have been advocated for handling unanticipated system conditions in real time. The applicability of distributed control schemes, however, is fundamentally limited by their need for widespread communication and model cognizance. In this context, we put forth a hybrid, low-communication, saturation-driven protocol for the coordination of control agents that are distributed over a physical system and are allowed to communicate with peers over a "hotline" communication network. Under this protocol, when agents observe a constraint violation based on local measurements, they respond locally until their control resources saturate, in which case they send a beacon for assistance to peer agents. The scheme ensures that minor violations are efficiently mitigated via fast local controls, whereas severe violations can be handled by collaboration among a relatively small set of agents. We evaluate the performance of this scheme via numerical tests on the IEEE 14-bus test feeder, where agents act upon noisy measurements under diverse scenarios of load variations and severe low-/high-voltage events.

Integrated System Planning: Emerging Software Requirements in the Power Industry

Power system planning software remains fragmented across organizational boundaries, with specialized tools for capacity expansion, production cost modeling, power flow, and dynamic analysis operating on incompatible data models and assumptions. This article argues that the fragmentation is not merely a technical problem but a predictable consequence of Conway's law: software architectures mirror the departmental structures within which they are developed. Regulatory milestones like Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Order 888 formalized these divisions, but the roots trace back to the distinct engineering disciplines-mechanical, chemical, and electrical-that staffed generation and transmission planning departments in vertically integrated utilities. As the industry moves toward integrated system planning (ISP) that coordinates generation, transmission, and distribution investment decisions, the software ecosystem must evolve accordingly. We identify five categories of software requirements to enable this transition: coherent data inputs decoupled from individual applications, unified and extensible data schemas, modular component representations that support multiple abstraction levels, lifecycle management of planning datasets, and well-defined application programming interface (API) contracts that separate data exchange from algorithmic control. We examine how these requirements interact with three common workflow patterns-serial gate clearing, sequential multiapplication, and convergence oriented-and discuss the interface design principles each demands. We then outline a vision for platform-based planning architectures where specialized analytical services compose through standardized interfaces and where artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) tools augment decision support within a disciplined software infrastructure. The practices proposed here offer a path from today's siloed tool collections toward collaborative planning ecosystems capable of handling the complexity of modern power system transformation.

Evolution of Distributed Energy Resource Grid Interconnection Standards for Integrating Emerging Storage Technologies

Grid interconnection standards facilitate safe and reliable grid integration of distributed energy resources (DERs). Evolution of a standard for DERs is expected to capture and accommodate widely different characteristics of DER and minimize unique grid integration challenges. This makes development of a uniform grid interconnection standard for all types of DERs a challenging and an ever-evolving consideration. This paper presents a detailed timeline of evolution, from the early 2000s to 2018, of DER interconnection standards and the research that informed their development. This is followed by a review of the research topics being considered in the grid integration of Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) which are expected to have the most significant growth amongst all DER types. These help in highlighting the need for a new standard to accommodate the unique characteristics of ESSs, and where the existing DER interconnection standard frameworks may be leveraged.

Optoelectronic Characterization of Emerging Solar Absorber Cu3AsS4

Enargite Cu 3 AsS 4 is a promising absorber for thin-film solar cells but little is known about its optoelectronic properties. Here, we present photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy (TRTS), timeresolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements of enargite thin films. The results indicate promising defect characteristics with minority carrier lifetimes on the order of ns, and band alignments suggest that buffer layers besides CdS must be developed to achieve high efficiency Cu 3 AsS 4 solar cells.

Arrhenius Analysis of the Degradation Modes in Emerging Photovoltaic Backsheets

With increasingly large-scale deployments of photovoltaic (PV) modules to meet global energy demands, interest in better establishing modules' lifespans is growing. We report on the performance of co-extruded polyolefin- (PO)-based backsheets as environmentally friendly alternatives to fluoropolymer-reinforced polyethylene-terephthalate (PET)-based backsheets using three hygrometric accelerated test conditions. After completing cumulative 4000 hours of aging, we analyzed data from electrical performance (I-V), surface roughness (gloss), and appearance (L, a*, b* color) characterizations to quantify degradation rates, quantify the corresponding activation energy, and cross-correlate between the characteristics examined, thereby providing insights into the relationship between physical characteristics and operating performance.

A multi-modal scanning system to digitize CBRNE emergency response scenes

A handheld system developed to digitize a contextual understanding of the scene at a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and/or explosives (CBRNE) events is described. The system uses LiDAR and cameras to create a colorized 3D model of the environment, which helps domain experts that are supporting responders in the field. To generate the digitized model, a responder scans any suspicious objects and the surroundings by carrying the system through the scene. The scanning system provides a real-time user interface to inform the user about scanning progress and to indicate any areas that may have been missed either by the LiDAR sensors or the cameras. Currently, the collected data are post-processed on a different device, building a colorized triangular mesh of the encountered scene, with the intention of moving this pipeline to the scanner at a later point. The mesh is sufficiently compressed to be sent over a reduced bandwidth connection to a remote analyst. Furthermore, the system tracks fiducial markers attached to diagnostic equipment that is placed around the suspicious object. The resulting tracking information can be transmitted to remote analysts to further facilitate their supporting efforts. The paper will discuss the system's design, software components, the user interface used for scanning a scene, the necessary procedures for calibration of the sensors, and the processing steps of the resulting data. The discussion will close by evaluating the system's performance on 11 scenes.
