Polymer thick-film conductors and dielectrics for membrane switches and flexible circuitry

The fabrication and operation of membrane switches are discussed. The membrane switch functions as a normally open, momentary contact, low-voltage pressure-sensitive device. Its design is a three-layer sandwich usually constructed of polyester film. Conductive patterns are deposited onto the inner side of top and bottom sheets by silk screening. The center spacer is then placed between the two circuit layers to form a sandwich, generally held together by an adhesive. When pressure is applied to the top layer, it flexes through the punched openings of the spacer to establish electrical contact between conductive pads of the upper and lower sheets, momentarily closing the circuit. Upon release of force the top sheet springs back to its normal open position. The membrane touch switch is being used in a rapidly expanding range of applications, including instrumentation, appliances, electronic games and keyboards. Its board acceptance results from its low cost, durability, ease of manufacture, cosmetic appeal and design flexibility. The principal electronic components in the membrane switch are the conductor and dielectric.

Dielectric cure monitoring: Preliminary studies

Preliminary studies have been conducted on two types of dielectric cure monitoring systems employing both epoxy resins and phenolic composites. An Audrey System was used for 23 cure monitoring runs with very limited success. Nine complete cure monitoring runs have been investigated using a Micromet System. Two additional measurements were performed to investigate the Micromet's sensitivity to water absorption in a post-cure carbon-phenolic material. While further work is needed to determine data significance, the Micromet system appears to show promise as a feedback control device during processing.

Scattering of electromagnetic waves from a half space of densely distributed dielectric scatterers

The scattering of a plane wave obliquely incident on a half space of densely distributed spherical dielectric scatterers is studied. The quasi-crystalline approximation is applied to truncate the hierarchy of multiple scattering equations, and the Percus-Yevick and the Verlet-Weis results are used to represent the pair distribution function. The coherent reflected wave is studied with these approximations. The incoherent scattered wave is calculated with the distorted Born approximation. In the low-frequency limit, closed-form expressions are obtained for the effective propagation constants, the coherent reflected wave, and the bistatic scattering coeficients. Results at higher frequencies are calculated numerically. The advantage of the present approach is that, in the low-frequency limit, it reproduces the effects of specular reflection, Fresnel reflection coefficient, Brewster angle, and Clausius-Mosotti relation. In addition to the classical results, the bistatic scattering coefficients are also calculated. The theory is also applied to match backscattering data from dry snow at microwave frequencies.

Dielectric and permeability effects in collisionless plasmas

Using the unabridged Maxwell equations (including vectors D, E and H) new effects in collisionless plasmas are uncovered. In a steady state, it is found that spatially varying energy density of the electric field (E perpendicular) orthogonal to B produces electric current leading, under certain conditions, to the relationship P perpendicular + B(2)/8 pi-epsilon E perpendicular(2)/8 pi = constant, where epsilon is the dielectric constant of the plasma for fields orthogonal to B. In steady state quasi-two-dimensional flows in plasmas, a general relationship between the components of electric field parallel and perpendicular to B is found. These effects are significant in geophysical and astrophysical plasmas. The general conditions for a steady state in collisionless plasma are deduced. With time variations in a plasma, slow compared to ion-gyroperiod, there is a general current, (j-asterisk), which includes the well-known polarization current, given by J-asterisk = d/dt (E x M) + (P x B) x B B(-2) where M and P are the magnetization and polarization vectors respectively.

An investigation of arc discharging on negatively biased dielectric conductor samples in a plasma

Proposals are now being developed for the construction of high-power photovoltaic systems for operation in low Earth orbit, where the plasma number density is about 1,000 to 1,000,000 per cubic cm. Existing data indicate that interactions between the plasma and high-voltage surfaces of an orbiting power system will occur. In ground tests, where the applied voltage is increased negatively from ground, the array current collection shows an approximately linear rise until it terminates in arcing at greater than several hundred volts negative. This arcing may reduce the power generation efficiency and could possibly affect the low-level logic circuits of the spacecraft. Therefore it is important that the arcing phenomenon be well understood. This study is a survey of the behavior of different dielectric-conductor samples, including a solar cell module, that were biased negatively in a low-density plasma environment with the intent of defining arc discharge conditions and characteristics. Procedures and results are discussed.

Electrical conduction in polymer dielectrics

The use of polymer dielectrics with moderate resistivities could reduce or eliminate problems associated with spacecraft charging. The processes responsible for conduction and the properties of electroactive polymers are reviewed, and correlations drawn between molecular structure and electrical conductivity. These structure-property relationships led to the development of several new electroactive polymer compositions and the identification of several systems that have the requisite thermal, mechanical, environmental and electrical properties for use in spacecraft.

A simple model of electron beam initiated dielectric breakdown

A steady state model that describes the internal charge distribution of a planar dielectric sample exposed to a uniform electron beam was developed. The model includes the effects of charge deposition and ionization of the beam, separate trap-modulated mobilities for electrons and holes, electron-hole recombination, and pair production by drifting thermal electrons. If the incident beam current is greater than a certain critical value (which depends on sample thickness as well as other sample properties), the steady state solution is non-physical.

Microwave Dielectric and Propagation Properties of Vegetation Canopies

A vegetation canopy is a highly inhomogeneous medium at microwave frequencies, and because the scattering elements (leaves, stalks, fruits, and branches) have a nonuniform distribution in orientation, the canopy is likely to exhibit nonisotropic attenuation properties. In some canopies, the stalk may contain the overwhelming majority of the plant's biomass, which suggests that an incident radar wave would be differentially attenuated by the canopy depending on the direction of the incident electric field relative to the stalks' orientation. The propagation properties of a vegetation canopy play a central role in modeling both the backscattering behavior observed by an imaging radar and the emission observed by a radiometer. These propagation properties are in turn governed by the dielectric properties and the size, shape, and slope distributions of the scatteres. In spite of the critical need for canopy propagation models and experimental data, very few investigations had been conducted (prior to this study) to determine the extinction properties of vegetation canopies, either by constituent type (leaves, stalks, etc.) or as a whole.

Dielectric cure monitoring of the 55A filament wound case resin

Studies were conducted to correlate data from dielectric cure monitoring of 55A filament would case resins using the Micromet System II with differential scanning calorimetry and resin strength tests. Strength tests for resin bonding at various time intervals and DSC are standard accepted techniques for monitoriong resin cure cycles. They are time consuming, destructive, and non-continuous. The Micromet System II will yield reliable information on degree of cure and other parameters, which should allow better quality control on filament wound case resin cure.

Endfire tapered slot antennas on dielectric substrates

Endfire-tapered slot antennas are suitable for many integrated circuit applications, imaging and phased arrays. An investigation of single elements of such antennas, including slots which are exponentially tapered (Vivaldi), linearly tapered, and constant width. For antennas of all types, a good general agreement is obtained for curves of beamwidth-versus-length, normalized to wavelength, when one compares the data with that for traveling-wave antennas published by Zucker (1961). An important condition for this agreement is that the effective dielectric thickness, defined in the text, is in a certain optimum range. This condition is qualitatively explained in terms of the theory for traveling-wave antennas.

Scattering from a random layer embedded with dielectric needles

Intensity scattering from a random layer imbedded with small dielectric needles is studied for applications to coniferous vegetation. The phase matrix of a thin needle whose length may be appreciable compared to the incident wavelength is presented. The effects of needle orientation on scattering is taken into account by averaging the phase function over angles of orientation. The backscattering coefficient from the layer is computed by solving the radiative transfer equation. The effects of operating frequency, orientation and size of a needle on like- and cross-backscattering are demonstrated. It was found that in backscattering angular trends are mainly controlled by the orientation of the needles.

Dynamic dielectric analysis - A nondestructive cure process monitoring method

The cure processes of TGDDM-based epoxy thermosets and polysulfone thermoplastic resins were monitored by means of computer-controlled dynamic dielectric measurements made at frequencies 5 Hz to 5 million Hz. The values of capacitance and conductance were recorded, and the data were used to calculate the complex permittivity, an intensive property which is characteristic of the material's state of cure and independent of the amount of material measured. The frequency dependence of the complex permittivity value was used to determine the conductivity and mean relaxation time. The conductivity which is also an intensive variable and is independent of sample size, was correlated with the viscosity in both the epoxy and polysulfone systems.
