Investigation of direct integrated optics modulators

Direct modulation techniques applicable to integrated optics data preprocessors were investigated. Several methods of modulating a coherent optical beam by interaction with an incoherent beam were studied. It was decided to investigate photon induced conductivity changes in thin semiconductor cladding layers on optical waveguides. Preliminary calculations indicate significant changes can be produced in the phase shift in a propagating wave when the conductivity is changed by ten percent or more. Experimental devices to verify these predicted phase changes and experiments designed to prove the concept are described.

Interfacial reactions in borsic/Ti-3Al-2-1/2V composite

The paper provides a detailed X-ray characterization of a borsic/Ti-3Al-2-1/2V composite, and to correlate the relative intensities of the reaction products with the mechanical properties. Based on X-ray integrated intensity data two stages of interface reactions were identified: during the first stage there is a simultaneous interdiffusion of Si, C, and Ti atoms at the filament/matrix interface resulting in the formation of Ti5Si3, TiSi and small amounts of TiSi2 and TiC. The second stage is associated with considerable TiSi2 and boride formation. It appears that the alpha-phase of Ti is more reactive in forming silicides and borides than the beta-phase. The silicide intensities and the reaction zone thicknesses are shown to be directly related to the reduction of the ultimate tensile strength by thermal degradation, and the results indicate that silicide reaction products are as detrimental to strength as the borides.

Investigation of direct integrated optics modulators

Direct optical modulation techniques applicable to integrated optical data preprocessors were studied. Emphasis was placed on the analysis and fabrication of a field effect type modulator. A series of computer modeling studies were performed to determine the effects of semiconductor cladding on the fields of propagating waves in planar dielectric waveguides. These studies predicted that changes in the propagation characteristics of waveguides clad with silicon and gallium arsenide could be made large enough to be useful in modulators. These effects are dependent on the complex permittivity and thickness of the cladding. Since the conductivity of the cladding can be changed by the photon generation of hole-electron pairs, incoherent light may be used as the input to modulate a coherent light beam. Waveguides were fabricated and silicon claddings were applied to verify the theoretical predictions.

Total-dose radiation effects data for semiconductor devices, volume 2

Total ionizing dose radiation test data on integrated circuits are analyzed. Tests were performed with the electron accelerator (Dynamitron) that provides a steady state 2.5 MeV electron beam. Some radiation exposures were made with a Cobalt-60 gamma ray source. The results obtained with the Cobalt-60 source are considered an approximate measure of the radiation damage that would be incurred by an equivalent dose of electrons.

Computer program documentation for the patch subsampling processor

The programs presented are intended to provide a way to extract a sample from a full-frame scene and summarize it in a useful way. The sample in each case was chosen to fill a 512-by-512 pixel (sample-by-line) image since this is the largest image that can be displayed on the Integrated Multivariant Data Analysis and Classification System. This sample size provides one megabyte of data for manipulation and storage and contains about 3% of the full-frame data. A patch image processor computes means for 256 32-by-32 pixel squares which constitute the 512-by-512 pixel image. Thus, 256 measurements are available for 8 vegetation indexes over a 100-mile square.

Fluid dynamical description of relativistic nuclear collisions

On the basis of both a conventional relativistic nuclear fluid dynamic model and a two fluid generalization that takes into account the interpenetration of the target and projectile upon contact, collisions between heavy nuclei moving at relativistic speeds are calculated. This is done by solving the relevant equations of motion numerically in three spatial dimensions by use of particle in cell finite difference computing techniques. The effect of incorporating a density isomer, or quasistable state, in the nuclear equation of state at three times normal nuclear density, and the effect of doubling the nuclear compressibility coefficient are studied. For the reaction 20Ne + 238U at a laboratory bombarding energy per nucleon of 393 MeV, the calculated distributions in energy and angle of outgoing charged particles are compared with recent experimental data both integrated over all impact parameters and for nearly central collisions.

An estimation of the condensation rates in three severe storm systems from satellite observations of the convective mass flux

A technique was developed for estimating the condensation rates of convective storms using satellite measurements of cirrus anvil expansion rates and radiosonde measurements of environmental water vapor. Three cases of severe convection in Oklahoma were studied and a diagnostic model was developed for integrating radiosonde data with satellite data. Two methods were used to measure the anvil expansion rates - the expansion of isotherm contours on infrared images, and the divergent motions of small brightness anomalies tracked on the visible images. The differences between the two methods were large as the storms developed, but these differences became small in the latter stage of all three storms. A comparison between the three storms indicated that the available moisture in the lowest levels greatly affected the rain rates of the storms. This was evident from both the measured rain rates of the storms and the condensation rates estimated by the model. The possibility of using this diagnostic model for estimating the intensities of convective storms also is discussed.

Remote sensing for forest applications in New York: Two case studies

Under-utilized forest resources in the Northeast can supply fiber to new markets. Information on forest resources, however, is often too aggregated to estimate available woody material with sufficient detail for planning specific projects. Over the past year, staff of Cornell University's Remote Sensing Program, under a grant from NASA, assisted New York State agency personnel by assessing available woody material for two potential development projects, a wood-fired power plant and a particle board manufacturing plant. These feasibility studies are reviewed, illustrating how information derived from high-altitude aircraft photographs, LANDSAT imagery, and available supporting data were integrated to arrive at estimates of woody material.

Integration of environmental and spectral data for sunflower stress determination

Stress in sunflowers was assessed in western and northwestern Minnesota. Weekly ground observations (acquired in 1980 and 1981) were analyzed in concert with large scale aerial photography and concurrent LANDSAT data. Using multidate supervised and unsupervised classification procedures, it was found that all crops grown in association with sunflowers in the study area are spectrally separable from one another. Under conditions of extreme drought, severely stressed plants were differentiable from those not severely stressed, but between-crop separation was not possible. Initial regression analyses to estimate sunflower seed yield showed a sensitivity to environmental stress during the flowering and seed development stages. One of the most important biological factors related to sunflower production in the Red River Valley area was found to be the extent and severity of insect infestations.

NASA propulsion controls research

Multivariable control theory is applied to the design of multiple input and output engine controls. Highly-accurate, real-time engine simulations are utilized for control development and checkout. Electro-optical control components are developed for use in electronic control systems having fiber optic data links. Integrated controls are developed for VSTOL and Rotorcraft propulsion systems. Post-stall models of engine systems are developed to aid in understanding and control of post-stall engine behavior.

Implications of information from LANDSAT-4 for private industry

The broader spectral coverage and higher resolution of LANDSAT-4 Thematic Mapper (TM) data open the door for identification from space of spectral phenomena associated with mineralization and microseepage of hydrocarbon. Digitally enhanced image products generated from TM data allow the mapping of many major and minor structural features that mark or influence emplacement of mineralization and accumulation of hydrocarbons. These improvements in capabilities over multispectral scanner data should accelerate the acceptance and integration of satellite data as a routinely used exploration tool that allows rapid examination of large areas in considerable detail. Imagery of Southern Ontario, Canada as well as of Cement, Oklahoma and Death Valley, California is discussed.

Errors in fixed and moving frame of references - Applications for conventional and Doppler radar analysis

Techniques for the correction of errors in Doppler radar scans due to advection effects are presented. A moving frame of reference is shown to be useful in least-squares estimates with stationary observations expressed in scalars or Cartesian coordinates. For non-Cartesian coordinates, such as the deduction of radial velocities from triple Doppler radar data, an integral is defined for accounting for advection effects and consequent coordinate transformations. The multiple radars are necessary for unambiguous characterization of the horizontal wind velocity. A scale analysis is employed to estimate errors with and without the error correction procedure. Improvements in correlations between scans are demonstrated when the error correction method is used.

Organizing Space Shuttle parametric data for maintainability

A model of organization and management of Space Shuttle data is proposed. Shuttle avionics software is parametrically altered by a reconfiguration process for each flight. As the flight rate approaches an operational level, current methods of data management would become increasingly complex. An alternative method is introduced, using modularized standard data, and its implications for data collection, integration, validation, and reconfiguration processes are explored. Information modules are cataloged for later use, and may be combined in several levels for maintenance. For each flight, information modules can then be selected from the catalog at a high level. These concepts take advantage of the reusability of Space Shuttle information to reduce the cost of reconfiguration as flight experience increases.

A sampling procedure to guide the collection of narrow-band, high-resolution spatially and spectrally representative reflectance data

A multistage sampling procedure using image processing, geographical information systems, and analytical photogrammetry is presented which can be used to guide the collection of representative, high-resolution spectra and discrete reflectance targets for future satellite sensors. The procedure is general and can be adapted to characterize areas as small as minor watersheds and as large as multistate regions. Beginning with a user-determined study area, successive reductions in size and spectral variation are performed using image analysis techniques on data from the Multispectral Scanner, orbital and simulated Thematic Mapper, low altitude photography synchronized with the simulator, and associated digital data. An integrated image-based geographical information system supports processing requirements.
