SUSTAINING NUCLEAR SECURITY REGIMES THROUGH CONTINUOUS LEARNING EXPERIENCES

As Member States plan, implement, and ultimately sustain their nuclear security regimes, human resource development supporting these regimes are paramount. Human resource development broadly includes programs addressing education, training, and knowledge management. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Implementing Guide, Sustaining a Nuclear Security Regime, highlights the importance of national-level support for assigning resources that help ensure States are able to develop and retain sufficient human resources in the short, medium, and long term. Determining the resources needed to support education, training, and knowledge management is not an easy task, and knowledge management is a practice often overlooked when States plan for and allocate human resources for a nuclear security regime. The paper highlights the importance of implementing knowledge management practices as part of sustaining a nuclear security regime. Given the availability of secure web-based knowledge management tools, a nuclear security human resource development program should not depend solely on direct human interactions. To that end, the paper will offer an approach for planning and implementing a knowledge management system by using the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration’s Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence Knowledge Management Website as a case study. This example offers useful lessons learned for States considering or actively developing their own nuclear security knowledge management efforts and human resource development.

Nanofibrous electrocatalyst including nanofibrous continuous network of graphitic nanofibers having embedded catalytically active metal moieties

A nanofibrous catalyst and method of manufacture. A precursor solution of a transition metal based material is formed into a plurality of interconnected nanofibers by electro-spinning the precursor solution with the nanofibers converted to a catalytically active material by a heat treatment. Selected subsequent treatments can enhance catalytic activity.

2020 Medical Device Sterilization Workshop: Continuing the Conversation, Summary Report

Technical advancements are making accelerator-based sources of radiation viable candidates for sterilization of medical devices. Electron beams and x-rays are becoming more cost-competitive and new facilities are being built to provide needed capacity and redundancy. As the industry becomes more receptive to these modalities, there is a need for information and data to enable prospective users to evaluate these options for their products. The workshops offered in 20191 and now in 2020 strive to foster conversation between device manufacturers, equipment and service providers on needs, capabilities, and knowledge.

Systems and methods for control of polymer reactions and processing using automatic continuous online monitoring

Manual and automatic methods and devices using a ACOMP system for active control of polymerization reaction processes. An ideal desired trajectory of one or more reaction and polymer characteristics can be established to produce a desired final polymer product with specified characteristics from a polymerization reaction process. A current reaction trajectory of a polymerization reaction process can be driven to an ideal or desired reaction trajectory. In a manual embodiment an operator can use ACOMP data to adjust process variables in order to drive the current reaction trajectory toward the ideal or desired reaction trajectory. In an automated mode a control program can use ACOMP data to make adjustments to process variables to drive the polymerization reaction process toward the desired trajectory as closely as possible either empirically or by solving the governing equations for the polymerization reaction process.

Ultra-broadband voltage-controlled oscillator linearization for frequency modulated continuous wave MMW imaging systems

Millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging systems require high resolution and spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) to produce images with low artifacts. In these systems, lateral resolution is determined by the center frequency and the ratio of the aperture size to the distance to the target. The downrange resolution is determined by the system bandwidth; for very fine downrange resolution of a target, or material layers/discontinuities, the bandwidth must be very broad. Additionally, the response over the bandwidth must be measured very rapidly to support high speed acquisition over large apertures. A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is a standard means of generating the ultra-broadband frequency chirp. This paper investigates the use of a broadband VCO for use in MMW imaging systems, a linear-phase calibration technique, and digital-to-analog converter (DAC) parameter considerations for controlling the VCO.

High performance, rapid thermal/UV curing epoxy resin for additive manufacturing of short and continuous carbon fiber epoxy composites

An additive manufacturing resin system includes a container; a build platform in the container; a build platform drive; an additive manufacturing resin that forms an additive manufacturing resin bath; an additive manufacturing print head; a build material supply connected to the additive manufacturing print head; an infill resin in the container, wherein the infill resin is supported by the additive manufacturing resin bath; a computer controller; and an extruded material that forms the product, wherein the infill resin at least partially surrounds the extruded material that forms the product. An infill resin supply provides the infill resin into the container and a control valve is connected to the infill resin supply. An IR light sensor is connected to the control valve and operatively connected to the infill resin in the container.
