Graphite/polyimide composites with improved toughness

Studies were performed to determine the toughness characteristics of composites prepared from modified addition-type polyimides, using Celion 6000 graphite fiber as the reinforcement. The polyimides were prepared from aromatic diamines containing flexibilizing ether connecting groups. The composite flexural and short beam shear strengths were determined at room temperature and elevated temperatures. Composite toughness was evaluated using 10 deg off axis tensile tests and double cantilever beam fracture tests at room temperature. The effects of the flexibilized resin structure on composite mechanical properties, toughness characteristics, and thermo-oxidative stability are discussed.

Nonlinear analysis of compressively loaded linked-plate structures

A method is presented for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of the equilibrium behavior of a general class of compressively loaded, prismatic, linked-plate structures. The semi-analytical method accounts for geometric shape imperfections, and allows the use of laminated composite plate properties. Buckling eigenfunctions are used as displacement shape functions, and the associated second-order displacement fields are incorporated. The nonlinear plate equilibrium equations are expressed in terms of the assumed displacement form, and the Galerkin method is used to obtain a set of algebraic equations which are nonlinear in the modal amplitudes and the load parameter. Buckling eigensolutions for the class of structures under consideration can be obtained from the VIPASA computer code; thus, subject to some additional restrictions in loading and plate anisotropy, structural configurations which can be analyzed with regard to buckling response by VIPASA can be analyzed with regard to geometrically nonlinear response using the new method.

Application of the pentaiodide strong base resin disinfectant to the U.S. space program

A pentaiodide resin is described which has 70 percent of its weight composed of elemental iodine, has a relatively low iodine residual, and may offer superior disinfection capability for applications on long-duration space vehicles. Such a disinfectant is crucial for use on spacecraft for long periods of time where water would be recycled through various systems. The pentaiodide resin is capable of devitalizing 1 x 10 to the 9th bacteria per ml in aqueous suspension within 10 seconds of contact with the resin bed. A number of organisms have already been tested and the resin continues to prove effective. Resin properties and composition are discussed and a detailed account of the first investigation of the pentaiodide resin as a disinfectant against the intestinal parasite Giardia lamblia is provided.

Relationship between voids and interlaminar shear strength of polymer matrix composites

The effect of voids on the interlaminar shear strength of a polyimide matrix composite system is described. The AS4 graphite/PMR-15 composite was chosen for study because this system can be readily processed by using the standard specified cure cycle to produce void-free composites and because preliminary work in this study had shown that the processing parameters of this resin matrix system can be altered to produce cured composites of varying void contents. Thirty-eight 12-ply unidirectional composite panels were fabricated for this study. A significant range of void contents (0 to 10 percent) was produced. The panels were mapped, ultrasonically inspected, and sectioned into interlaminar shear, flexure, and fiber content specimens. The density of each specimen was measured and interlaminar shear and flexure strength measurements were then made. The fiber content was measured last. The results of these tests were evaluated by using ultrasonic results, photomicrographs, statistical methods, theoretical relationships derived by other investigators, and comparison of the test data with the Integrated Composite Analyzer (ICAN) computer program developed at the Lewis Research Center for predicting composite ply properties. The testing is described in as much detail as possible in order to help others make realistic comparisons.

US and foreign alloy cross-reference database

Marshall Space Flight Center and other NASA installations have a continuing requirement for materials data from other countries involved with the development of joint international Spacelab experiments and other hardware. This need includes collecting data for common alloys to ascertain composition, physical properties, specifications, and designations. This data is scattered throughout a large number of specification statements, standards, handbooks, and other technical literature which make a manual search both tedious and often limited in extent. In recognition of this problem, a computerized database of information on alloys was developed along with the software necessary to provide the desired functions to access this data. The intention was to produce an initial database covering aluminum alloys, along with the program to provide a user-interface to the data, and then later to extend and refine the database to include other nonferrous and ferrous alloys.

An improved compression molding technology for continuous fiber reinforced composite laminate. Part 1: AS-4/LaRC-TPI 1500 (HFG) Prepreg system

Poor processability of fiber reinforced high performance polyimide thermoplastic resin composites is a well recognized issue which, in many cases, prohibits the fabrication of composite parts with satisfactorily consolidated quality. Without modifying the resin matrix chemistry, improved compression modeling procedures were proposed and investigated with the AS-4/LaRC-TPI 1500 High Flow Grade (HFG) prepreg system. Composite panels with excellent C-scans can be consistently molded by this method under 700 F and a consolidation pressure as low as 100 psi. A mechanism for the consolidation of the composite under this improved molding technique is discussed. This mechanism reveals that a certain degree of matrix shear and tow filament slippage and nesting between plies occur during consolidation, which leads to a reduction of the consolidating pressure necessary to offset the otherwise intimate inter fiber-fiber contact and consequently achieves a better consolidation quality. Outstanding short beam shear strength and flexural strength were obtained from the molded panels. A prolonged consolidation step under low pressure, i.e., 100 psi at 700 F for 75 minutes, was found to significantly enhance the composite mechanical properties.

Composite propellant technology research: Mechanical property characterization

Proof for the existence of a single Poisson's ratio function in isotropic linear viscoelastic materials is presented. An in-depth discussion is given of three dimensional viscoelastic material properties and their relationships to linear isotropic and orthotropic viscoelastic materials. A discussion of the alternate invariant definition as used by Abaqus and how it relates to the form used by Dr. S. Peng is presented.

Properties of the moon, Mars, Martian satellites, and near-earth asteroids

Environments and surface properties of the moon, Mars, Martian satellites, and near-earth asteroids are discussed. Topics include gravity, atmospheres, surface properties, surface compositions, seismicity, radiation environment, degradation, use of robotics, and environmental impacts. Gravity fields vary from large fractions of the earth's field such as 1/3 on Mars and 1/6 on the moon to smaller fractions of 0.0004 g on an asteroid 1 km in diameter. Spectral data and the analogy with meteor compositions suggest that near-earth asteroids may contain many resources such as water-rich carbonaceous materials and iron-rich metallic bodies. It is concluded that future mining and materials processing operations from extraterrestrial bodies require an investment now in both (1) missions to the moon, Mars, Phobos, Deimos, and near-earth asteroids and (2) earth-based laboratory research in materials and processing.

Chemical interactions in the aluminum-carbon and aluminum-silicon carbide systems

XPS was used to investigate the influence of O2 and H2O on the formation of aluminum carbide at Al-C and Al-SiC interfaces. It was determined that dosing the interfaces with H2O catalyzed the formation of aluminum carbide in both systems. This result is consistent with the oxidation model of carbide formation (developed to understand the kinetics of aluminum carbide formation at graphite-aluminum interfaces). These results imply that the formation of aluminum carbide in graphite- and SiC-reinforced metal-matrix composites, which severely degrades the composite mechanical properties by degrading the fiber and interface strength is catalyzed.

LaRC-TPI 1500 composites fabricated using an aqueous slurry process

Unidirectional composites from unsized carbon fiber and LaRC-TPI matrix material were fabricated using 'high flow' and'medium flow' grades of the LaRC-TPI 1500 series of polyimides. Prepreg was drum-wound from a slurry composed of the polyimide powder dispersed in an aqueous solution of LaRC-TPI poly(amide acid). The poly(amide acid) was found to be an effective binding agent in the prepregging process. Composite short beam shear and flexure properties were measured at room and elevated temperatures (to 177 C) with both dry and moisture-saturated specimens. The mechanical properties observed for composites fabricated from the high and medium flow materials were virtually identical. Additionally, double cantilever beam measurements showed nearly equivalent fracture toughness for the two composite materials.

Lunar exploration for resource utilization

The strategy for developing resources on the Moon depends on the stage of space industrialization. A case is made for first developing the resources needed to provide simple materials required in large quantities for space operations. Propellants, shielding, and structural materials fall into this category. As the enterprise grows, it will be feasible to develop additional sources - those more difficult to obtain or required in smaller quantities. Thus, the first materials processing on the Moon will probably take the abundant lunar regolith, extract from it major mineral or glass species, and do relatively simple chemical processing. We need to conduct a lunar remote sensing mission to determine the global distribution of features, geophysical properties, and composition of the Moon, information which will serve as the basis for detailed models of and engineering decisions about a lunar mine.

Visible Imaging on the Pluto Fast Flyby Mission

Objectives for visible imaging of the Pluto-Charon system, as prescribed by the Outer Planets Science Working Group, are to acquire (1) global observations (FOV of approximately 5000 IFOV's) at 1 km/line-pair for the purpose of characterizing surface morphology and geology, (2) global observations in 3-5 broadband colors at 5-10 km/line-pair for studies of surface properties and composition as it relates to morphology, and (3) selected observations at higher spatial resolution for study of surface processes. Several factors of the Pluto Fast Flyby mission make these difficult to achieve. These factors along with other aspects of the mission are discussed.
