Effect of Nanoscale Ce 0.8 Gd 0.2 O 2–δ Infiltrant and Steam Content on Ni–(Y 2 O 3 ) 0.08 (ZrO 2 ) 0.92 Fuel Electrode Degradation during High-Temperature Electrolysis

Studies of Ni–yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) fuel electrode degradation mechanisms in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) are complicated by the different possible Ni–YSZ microstructures and compositions, and the variations in the H 2 /H 2 O ratio encountered in an electrolysis stack. Here, in this study, we describe a life testing scheme aimed at providing survey results on degradation as a function of the H 2 O–H 2 composition, with life tests carried out at five different steam contents from 90% to 10%. A Ni–YSZ-supported symmetric cell geometry is employed both with and without infiltrated nanoscale gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC). Impedance spectroscopy is utilized to observe changes in electrochemical characteristics during the life test, and a transmission-line-based equivalent circuit is used to model the data. Post-test electrode microstructures were observed. The results suggest that the GDC infiltrant reduces the electrode polarization resistance and provides more stable electrode polarization over a range of conditions.

Benchmarking Density Functional Theory Methods for Efficient Calculations of a Strongly Correlated Li 1– x Ni 1– y O 2−δ System

Transition metal oxides (TMOs), such as LiNiO 2 , are promising candidates for energy storage and electronic devices due to their unique electronic properties, exceptional physical and chemical characteristics, and ability to adopt multiple oxidation states. However, accurately predicting their properties using mean-field density functional theory (DFT) is challenging due to the presence of strongly correlated d-electrons and the complex interplay between their structural, electronic, and magnetic responses. These challenges are further exacerbated by the need to model defects, surfaces, and interfaces, which require computationally efficient, large-scale simulations. To address these issues, we carry out a benchmark study on the Li 1–x NiO 2 system, evaluating the performance of several popular functionals. Our findings demonstrate that combining SCAN functional relaxation with single-step HSE calculations provides a practical and scalable computational strategy. This approach balances accuracy and efficiency, enabling high-throughput simulations of strongly correlated TMOs and improved predictive modeling capability of TMOs for practical applications.

Spin texture induced by non-magnetic doping and spin dynamics in 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnet h -Y(Mn,Al)O 3

Novel effects induced by nonmagnetic impurities in frustrated magnets and quantum spin liquid represent a highly nontrivial and interesting problem. A theoretical proposal of extended modulated spin structures induced by doping of such magnets, distinct from the well-known skyrmions has attracted significant interest. Here, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic impurities can produce such extended spin structures in h-YMnO 3 , a triangular antiferromagnet with noncollinear magnetic order. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we measured the full dynamical structure factor in Al-doped h-YMnO 3 and confirmed the presence of magnon damping with a clear momentum dependence. Our theoretical calculations can reproduce the key features of the INS data, supporting the formation of the proposed spin textures. As such, our study provides the first experimental confirmation of the impurity-induced spin textures. It offers new insights and understanding of the impurity effects in a broad class of noncollinear magnetic systems.
