The Hubble Space Telescope: New Windows of Discovery

The Hubble Space Telescope has enabled incredible discoveries about our solar system, stars, galaxies, and the universe. It is also glimpsing the mysterious effects of dark matter, dark energy, and black holes. Thanks to a series of astronaut servicing missions and an incredible technical support team on the ground, Hubble is poised for many years of scientific discovery ahead. As we celebrate Hubble’s 32nd birthday, this presentation will showcase Hubble’s most recent incredible images and findings as well as innovative plans for future observations. Hubble is a key player in planned future scientific quests, to complement new solar system probes and major observatories on the ground and in space including the recently launched Webb Space Telescope.

The Puzzling Structure of Solar Convection: Window into the Dynamo

The operation of the solar dynamo, with all of its remarkable spatio-temporal ordering, remains an outstanding problem of modern solar physics. A number of mechanisms that might plausibly contribute to its operation have been proposed, but the relative role played by each remains unclear. This uncertainty stems from continuing questions concerning the speed and structure of deep-seated convective flows. Those flows are in-turn thought to sustain both the Sun’s turbulent EMF and the large-scale flows of differential rotation and meridional circulation suspected of influencing the dynamo’s organization and timing. Ultimately, the convective and large-scale flow structure derive from the Coriolis force. When the Coriolis effect is weak (rapid convective flow), convection exhibits little organization in its spatial structure, and the meridional flow is expected to assume a single-celled profile within each hemisphere. Convection subject to strong Coriolis forces instead organizes into compact, spiraling columnar structures and sustains meridional flows that possess multiple cells in latitude and radius. The implications for the dynamo in these two regimes are substantial, impacting the flux-transport properties of any assumed meridional flow and the convectively-driven EMF. Continued progress in this area is complicated by (i) inconsistencies between helioseismic measurements of convective and meridional flow made with different techniques and instruments, and (ii) a lack of high-latitude data for convection, differential rotation, and meridional flow. We suggest that the path forward to resolving these difficulties is twofold. First, the acquisition of long-term helioseismic and emissivity measurements obtained from a polar vantage point is vital to complete our picture of the Sun’s outer convection zone. Second, sustained and expanded investment in theory-oriented and combined theory/observational research initiatives will be crucial to fully exploit these new observations and to resolve inconsistencies between existing measurements.

Short Window Intra-Spacecraft RFID Localization

Logistics management has emerged as a key component to activities conducted in space. The RFID Enabled Autonomous Logistics Management (REALM) system has played a key role in providing cargo tracking capabilities in the noisy environment of the ISS. Currently, the inferencing engines used by REALM to predict the location of RFID tagged items operate on an hour of data. Movements aboard space stations occur on the scales of seconds. In this work we propose a new inferencing engine, that produces an embedding space that represents the location of RFID marked cargo on the scale of 30 seconds to 2 minutes of data, allowing for the categorization of movement of cargo, and predictions of a coarse location in less time than existing engines.

Self-powered and reversible light-directed electrophoretic deposition device for use in smart windows and photodetector displays

According to one embodiment, a method includes receiving light on a photoconductive layer of an electrophoretic deposition (EPD) device, the EPD device having a chamber defined by a first sheet, a second sheet and a spacer between the first and second sheets, where the first sheet is nonopaque and includes the photoconductive layer, where the second sheet is nonopaque and spaced from the first sheet, where a fluidic solution having a plurality of particles is in the chamber. The particles in the solution are attracted from suspension to illuminated portions of the photoconductive layer in the absence of an external voltage applied to the first and second sheets. The particles become deposited on the illuminated portions of the photoconductive layer.

Registration station for assembling insulating glass windows

An insulating glass unit (IGU) assembly line comprising a registration station capable of interleaving double and triple pane IGUs in accordance with an IOU production schedule. Visual indicators or prompts instruct operators at the assembly line in configuring a sequence of IGUs. Triple pane IGUs are assembled with minimal contamination of a center glass lite. A non-contact Bernoulli pad is used to lift a glass lite off from a horizontal or vertical support that conveys it from a glass washer to the registration station. Each of multiple pads has a capacity to lift approximately seven to ten pounds. Use of multiple pads per glass sheet or lite allows lites having dimensions up to 70 by 100 inches (assuming glass thickness of one quarter inch) to be assembled.
