Modeling of thruster and solar array characteristics in the JPL low-thrust trajectory analysis

Recent advances in thruster and solar array technology have resulted in the possibility of performing many high energy space missions previously considered infeasible. This capability was demonstrated by an extensive study last year of a comet Halley rendezvous mission. In order to perform this extremely high energy mission, several advanced concepts in electric propulsion technology were investigated; notably the use of very high power, lightweight solar arrays which directly powered the beam supply of the electric propulsion thrusters, and the use of solar concentrators on the arrays together with conventional thrusters and power processors. These technology advances have directly impacted the modeling of the solar arrays and thrusters in the programs used in generating low-thrust trajectories. The intent of this paper is to discuss the modeling of the solar arrays and thrusters as employed in the trajectory programs presently being used in low-thrust mission studies at JPL.

Relationships between convective storms and their environment in AVE IV determined from a three-dimensional subsynoptic-scale, trajectory model

The paper describes interrelationships between synoptic-scale and convective-scale systems obtained by following individual air parcels as they traveled within the convective storm environment of AVE IV. (NASA's fourth Atmospheric Variability Experiment, AVE IV, was a 36-hour study in April 1975 of the atmospheric variability and structure in regions of convective storms.) A three-dimensional trajectory model was used to calculate parcel paths, and manually digitized radar was employed to locate convective activity of various intensities and to determine those trajectories that traversed the storm environment. Spatial and temporal interrelationships are demonstrated by reference to selected time periods of AVE IV which contain the development and movement of the squall line in which the Neosho tornado was created.

Technology and operational considerations for low-heat-rate trajectories

A broad parametric study which examines several critical aspects of low-heat-rate entry trajectories is performed. Low planform loadings associated with future winged earth-entry vehicles coupled with the potential application of metallic thermal protection systems (TPS) suggest that such trajectories are of particular interest. Studied are three heating conditions - reference, stagnation, and windward centerline, for both laminar and turbulent flow; configuration-related factors including planform loading and hypersonic angle of attack; and mission-related factors such as cross-range and orbit inclination. Results indicate benefits in the design of TPS to be gained by utilizing moderate angles of attack as opposed to high-lift coefficient, high angles of attack, during entry. An assessment of design and technology implications is made.

Trajectories of charged particles in radial electric and uniform axial magnetic fields

Trajectories of charged particles were determined over a wide range of parameters characterizing motion in cylindrical low-pressure gas discharges and plasma heating devices which have steady radial electric fields perpendicular to uniform steady magnetic fields. Consideration was given to radial distributions characteristic of fields measured in a modified Penning discharge, in two NASA Lewis burnout-type plasma heating devices, and that estimated for the Ixion device. Numerical calculations of trajectories for such devices showed that differences between cyclotron frequency and qB/m and between azimuthal drift and a guiding center approximation are appreciable.

A suggested trajectory for a Venus-sun, earth-sun Lagrange points mission, Vela

The possibility is suggested of investigating the existence of small, as-yet undiscovered, asteroids orbiting in the solar system near the earth-sun or Venus-sun stable Lagrange points by means of a spacecraft which traverses these regions. The type of trajectory suggested lies in the ecliptic plane and has a period of 5/6 years and a perihelion at the Venus orbital distance. The regions in which stable orbits associated with the earth and with Venus may lie are estimated to be a thin and tadpole-shaped area extending from 35 deg to 100 deg from the planet. Crossings of the regions by the trajectory are described, and the requirements for detecting the presence of 1 km sized asteroids are presented and shown to be attainable.

Analysis of fuel-conservative curved decelerating approach trajectories for powered-lift and CTOL jet aircraft

A method for determining fuel conservative terminal approaches that include changes in altitude, speed, and heading are described. Three different guidance system concepts for STOL aircraft were evaluated in flight: (1) a fixed trajectory system; (2) a system that included a fixed path and a real time synthesized capture flight path; and (3) a trajectory synthesizing system. Simulation results for the augmentor wing jet STOL research aircraft and for the Boeing 727 aircraft are discussed. The results indicate that for minimum fuel consumption, two guidance deceleration segments are required.

Mass reduction for advanced winged entry vehicles through integrated thermostructural-trajectory design

This study examines the impact of aerothermo-structure design integration on thermal protection system (TPS) mass for advanced winged entry vehicles. Four basic categories of TPS are considered: external insulation, metallic hot structures, metallic standoff, and hybrid systems. A variety of concepts that fit in these basic categories are examined. Entry trajectories tailored specifically to the characteristics of each TPS concept are generated. An aerodynamic heating program is used with the appropriately tailored trajectories to determine the centerline TPS requirements for each concept. Included in the investigation is the impact on the combined TPS-structure mass of structural materials which maintain their integrity to higher temperatures. Results indicate that significant mass reduction can be realized through appropriate aerothermo-structure design integration. An assessment is made of the relative merits of the TPS/structure/trajectory combinations considered in the study.

Constrained optimum trajectories with specified range

The characteristics of optimum fixed-range trajectories whose structure is constrained to climb, steady cruise, and descent segments are derived by application of optimal control theory. The performance function consists of the sum of fuel and time costs, referred to as direct operating costs (DOC). The state variable is range-to-go and the independent variable is energy. In this formulation a cruise segment always occurs at the optimum cruise energy for sufficiently large range. At short ranges (500 n. mi. and less) a cruise segment may also occur below the optimum cruise energy. The existence of such a cruise segment depends primarily on the fuel flow vs thrust characteristics and on thrust constraints. If thrust is a free control variable along with airspeed, it is shown that such cruise segments will not generally occur. If thrust is constrained to some maximum value in climb and to some minimum in descent, such cruise segments generally will occur. The performance difference between free thrust and constrained thrust trajectories has been determined in computer calculations for an example transport aircraft.

Asymptotic continuation method for trajectory optimization

A continuation method is applied to a singular perturbation parameter to obtain a new numerical method for computing optimal trajectories. This method allows one to use simply calculated reduced order approximations as starting solutions and continue the perturbation parameter until the optimal full-order solution is obtained. The method does not require the calculation of higher order correction terms nor does it require the perturbation parameter to be small - thus, it has potentially superior convergence properties compared to conventional asymptotic expansions when the perturbation parameter is large. A simple trajectory optimization problem is considered to illustrate the method.

A model for helicopter guidance on spiral trajectories

A point mass model is developed for helicopter guidance on spiral trajectories. A fully coupled set of state equations is developed and perturbation equations suitable for 3-D and 4-D guidance are derived and shown to be amenable to conventional state variable feedback methods. Control variables are chosen to be the magnitude and orientation of the net rotor thrust. Using these variables reference controls for nonlevel accelerating trajectories are easily determined. The effects of constant wind are shown to require significant feedforward correction to some of the reference controls and to the time. Although not easily measured themselves, the controls variables chosen are shown to be easily related to the physical variables available in the cockpit.

Modest asteroid or comet flyby mission trajectories

The paper discusses modest comet or asteroid missions which require a launch energy of 20 sq km/sq s or less and allow only navigational post launch delta-V's. Objects with perihelia of 2.0 AU are available directly after an earth launch; this distance is extended to 2.4 AU by a Mars gravity assist and the flyby speeds can be reduced. Twenty-one asteroid targets have been identified for Mars gravity assist trajectories using the 1986 Mars opportunity. Two asteroids on direct trajectories with low asteroid flyby speeds and four Mars gravity assist targets are identified as possible rendezvous targets for launches with capability of carrying the rendezvous delta-V engines.

Application of trajectory optimization principles to minimize aircraft operating costs

This paper summarizes various applications of trajectory optimization principles that have been or are being devised by both government and industrial researchers to minimize aircraft direct operating costs (DOC). These costs (time and fuel) are computed for aircraft constrained to fly over a fixed range. Optimization theory is briefly outlined, and specific algorithms which have resulted from application of this theory are described. Typical results which demonstrate use of these algorithms and the potential savings which they can produce are given. Finally, need for further trajectory optimization research is presented.

Phugoid oscillations in optimal reentry trajectories

A major problem with operations of lifting reentry vehicle having and aft center-of-gravity location due to large engine mass at the rear is the required hypersonic trim to fight the desired trajectory. This condition is most severe for lifting maneuvers. As a first step toward analyzing this problem, this paper considers the lift requirement for some basic maneuvers in the plane of a great circle. Considerations are given to optimal lift control for achieving the maximization of either the final altitude, speed or range. For the maximum-range problem, phugoid oscillation along an optimal trajectory is less severe as compared to a glide with maximum lift-to-drag ratio. An explicit formula for the number of oscillations for an entry from orbital speed is proposed.
