Iterative ML and Experiments for Emerging VOCs

SAND2026-17074O Iterative ML and Experiments for Emerging VOCs is a tool that analyzes and predicts the behaviors of SARS-CoV-2 variants. It processes experimental data on ACE2 (the receptor for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that allows it to infect the cell) and antibody binding using machine learning models, including neural networks, to forecast ACE2 interactions and variant expression. The tool employs transfer learning and global epistasis modeling, integrating public datasets with proprietary data to enhance prediction accuracy. Additionally, it fits concentration-response curves to determine dissociation constants and generates visualizations to support research findings, thereby aiding in the identification of new antibodies for emerging variants of concern. CEC Quest: Long Duration Energy Storage Impact Analysis Tool

SAND2025-14389O CEC Quest is a Python tool with a user interface designed to analyze the greenhouse gas impacts of long-duration energy storage projects in California. The tool automates data collection from public sources and uses an Application Programming Interface (API) to enable users to download photovoltaic resource availability, marginal operating emissions rate, and utility rate data. It guides users in inputting parameters for a battery energy storage model and uploading site electrical load data, while also prompting for relevant analysis parameters like timestep and grid limits. CEC Quest performs monthly optimization of one year of data to assess impacts on the site’s electrical bill and the grid’s greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, it conducts a lifecycle analysis to evaluate changes over a defined quantification period, with results aggregated through automated report generation. TalkPipe Writing Assistant

SAND2025-14316O TalkPipe Writing Assistant offers AI assistance, providing help on a point-by-point basis. Authors can start with their own ideas—whether bullet points, partial paragraphs, or phrases—and specify the document type, desired tone, audience, and any other relevant context. As they write, the assistant provides tailored suggestions for each paragraph. They can request high-level concepts, draft a paragraph, or proofread existing text. The large language model (LLM) considers both preceding and following paragraphs to ensure coherence and flow. Strategic Energy Plan, Town of Cranberry Isles

This report details the strategic energy plan for the Town of Cranberry Isles, Maine. This project was spearheaded by the Cranberry Isles Community Solar Association (CICSA), and supported by Island Institute and Sandia National Laboratories, in partnership with the National Laboratory of the Rockies and Versant Power. The plan details the energy vision, goals, and focus areas for the community, provides technical analysis of the current energy system, and outlines potential projects to support community energy. Throughout the energy planning process, the project team engaged with members of the community to gather input and ideas to shape the plan. The project team and Versant also completed an extensive data collection to better inform the project. Sandia National Laboratories completed baseline technical assessments and feasibility studies to better understand potential feasible options for future projects. These potential projects, high-level costs, and next steps are a key output of this report.

Design of Critical Experiments Targeting Epithermal Cross Sections of Tantalum

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are collaborating to develop a capability to test the epithermal/intermediate cross sections of tantalum (Ta) at the SNL critical experiments facility using the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuel. The Sandia Critical Experiments (SCX) Program provides a specialized facility for performing water moderated and reflected critical experiments with UO 2 fuel rod arrays. A history of safe reactor operations and flexibility in reactor core configuration has resulted in the completion of several benchmark critical experiment evaluations that are published in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The critical experiments described here are scheduled to be performed at SCX in fiscal year 2023. Currently, fabrication details for the needed new equipment are being finalized for completion of the procurement process. The experiments will then be executed and documented for publication consideration by the ICSBEP.

Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Integral Experiment Execution (CED-3b Report)

This report documents the experimental configurations and measurements for IER-518: Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Experiments. These measurements involved a series of subcritical configurations at the Sandia Critical Experiments (SCX) facility at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The purpose of these measurements was to produce time tagged neutron count data of configurations that exceed a subcritical multiplication of 20, which is the high end of the fundamental physics benchmarks currently available in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project Handbook (ICSBEP). These measurements leverage experimental configurations 1 and detector systems 2 from previously accepted ICSBEP benchmark evaluations, allowing evaluations of these measurements to be performed at greatly reduced cost.

Characterizing falling particle curtain receivers at commercially relevant scales: Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR-1)

Sandia will construct a cold flow receiver test platform in order to characterize falling particle curtain receivers at commercially relevant scales. While Sandia has extensive experience in R&D of falling particle curtain receivers, most have been at pilot scale and smaller - on the order of 1 MW th with characteristic dimensions of nominally 1-2 m to adequately collect solar energy from the heliostat field at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF). However, scaling up receivers to commercially relevant scales (25 MW th and above) will require a thorough understanding of particle curtain dynamics at larger scales, especially longer drop heights, for design certainty. The goal of this project will be to construct a cold falling particle curtain test rig capable of simulating particle characteristics that are expected in a commercial scale CSP plant, namely the drop height, curtain thickness, and particle mass flow rate (normalized by length of curtain). This will enable data collection on curtain opacity and spread, both of which are correlated to receiver efficiency and reliable construction, for commercially relevant scales. It will also permit validation of numerical models that will enable detailed receiver characterization and design past currently validated scales.

RCBC Automatic Monitoring and Control Recommendations

The recompression closed Brayton cycle (RCBC) test rig at the Sandia Brayton Laboratory provides a development platform to accelerate the commercialization of key technologies for supercritical CO 2 (sCO 2 ) closed loop Brayton cycles. The test rig enables testing to gain experience and confidence with new technologies, equipment, and processes, and automating monitors and controls will enhance Sandia’s ability to perform the types and amounts of testing needed. This report identifies candidates for automatic monitoring and control to ensure the loop remains within design limits and minimize risk to equipment due to off-normal events or conditions.
