Review of some of the results of the Mariner 7 ultraviolet spectrometer observations of the south polar cap of Mars. The near ultraviolet polar spectrum shows the predominance of surface reflection over atmospheric scattering. The intensity of the reflected radiation decreased steeply for a change in solar elevation of only about 10 deg. Neither a haze layer nor ground inhomogeneity is considered a likely explanation for this observation. An unusual photometric function of the surface is more probable. An analysis of reflected radiation intensity as a function of incidence and emission angles was made, assuming a photometric function for the surface. The angular inversion revealed a 'smoothness factor' suggestive of an icy or glazed surface. A hypothesis is advanced to explain the observed phenomena and associated polar features.
Review was made of past models for describing the reflectance and/or emittance properties of agricultural/forestry and geological targets in an effort to select the best theoretical models. An extension of the six parameter Allen-Gayle-Richardson model was chosen as the agricultural plant canopy model. The model is used to predict the bidirectional reflectance of a field crop from known laboratory spectra of crop components and approximate plant geometry. The selected geological model is based on Mie theory and radiative transfer equations, and will assess the effect of textural variations of the spectral emittance of natural rock surfaces.
A one hundredth scale model of the modified 089B shuttle orbiter was tested in the Langley 20-Inch Mach 6 tunnel. Force and moment, surface pressure and oilflow data were obtained on one model, and phase-change coating data were obtained on another. The pressure tests were conducted first; the tubes were clipped near the base of the model and then the force and moment and oil flow tests conducted. Angles of attack for the tests were from 20 deg to 35 deg and are commensurate with the range of flight values from entry down to Mach 5. The design flight Reynolds number at Mach 6, based on model length, was 15 million, which could not be obtained in the tunnel; therefore, the tests were conducted at the highest and lowest values for this model in the tunnel, 9.4 million and 4.0 million, respectively, to indicate Reynolds number effects. Two control deflection combinations, representative of the bank and pitch control limits of the design flight trajectory, were used.
