Layer-dependent optically induced spin polarization in InSe

Optical control of spin in semiconductors has been pioneered using nanostructures of III-V and II-VI semi-conductors, but the emergence of two-dimensional van der Waals materials offers an alternative low-dimensional platform for spintronic phenomena. Indium selenide (InSe), a group-III monochalcogenide van der Waals material, has shown promise for optoelectronics due to its high electron mobility, tunable direct band gap, and quantum transport. In addition to these confirmed properties, there are predictions of spin-dependent optical selection rules, suggesting the potential for all-optical excitation and control of spin in a two-dimensional layered material. Despite these predictions, layer-dependent optical spin phenomena in InSe have yet to be explored. Here, we present measurements of layer-dependent optical spin dynamics in few-layer and bulk InSe. Polarized photoluminescence reveals layer-dependent optical orientation of spin, thereby demonstrating the optical selection rules in few-layer InSe. Spin dynamics are also studied in many-layer InSe using time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy. By applying out-of-plane and in-plane static magnetic fields for polarized emission measurements and Kerr measurements, respectively, the g factor for InSe was extracted. Further investigations are done by calculating precession values using a k · p model, which is supported by ab initio density functional theory. Comparison of predicted precession rates with experimental measurements highlights the importance of excitonic effects in InSe for understanding spin dynamics. In conclusion, optical orientation of spin is an important prerequisite for optospintronic phenomena and devices, and these first demonstrations of layer-dependent optical excitation of spins in InSe lay the foundation for combining layer-dependent spin properties with advantageous electronic properties found in this material.

Orbital polarization, charge transfer, and fluorescence in reduced-valence nickelates

Herein this paper presents a simple formalism for calculating X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) that has as input orbital-resolved density of states from a single particle or many-body ab initio calculation and is designed to capture itinerant-like features. We use this formalism to calculate both the XAS and RIXS with input from DFT and DFT + DMFT for the recently studied reduced valence nickelates R 4 Ni 3 O 8 and RNiO 2 (R = rare earth), and these results are then contrasted with those for the cuprate CaCuO 2 and the unreduced nickelate R 4 Ni 3 O 10 . In contrast to the unreduced R 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the reduced valence nickelates as well as the cuprate show strong orbital polarization due to the dominance of x 2 – y 2 orbitals for the unoccupied 3d states. We also reproduce two key aspects of a recent RIXS experiment for R 4 Ni 3 O 8 : (i) a charge transfer feature between 3d and oxygen 2p states whose energy we find to decrease as one goes from RNiO 2 to R 4 Ni 3 O 8 to the cuprate, and (ii) an energy-dependent polarization reversal of the fluorescence line that arises from hybridization of the unoccupied 3z 2 –r 2 states with R 5d states. We end with some implications of our results for the nature of the 3d electrons in reduced valence nickelates.

Anomalous superconducting diode effect in a polar superconductor

A superconductor with broken time-reversal and inversion symmetry may exhibit nonreciprocal charge transport, including a nonreciprocal critical current, also known as superconducting diode effect. Here, we report an intrinsic superconducting diode effect in a polar strontium titanate film. Differential resistance measurements reveal a superconducting state whose depairing current is polarity dependent. There is, however, no measurable deviation from Ohmic behavior, implying that this state does not arise from a bulk magnetochiral anisotropy. In the entire measurement range, the only deviation from linearity in the differential resistance is on the edge of the superconducting transition at high magnetic fields, likely due to the motion of flux vortices. Furthermore, the magnitude of the effect is preserved even when the in-plane magnetic field is oriented parallel to the current, indicating that this effect truly does not originate from a bulk magnetochiral anisotropy.

Anomalous Hall effect in the polar magnet Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 : A candidate for hosting skyrmions

While recent theoretical studies have positioned noncollinear polar magnets with C nv symmetry as compelling candidates for realizing topological magnetic phases and substantial intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity, experimental realizations of the same in strongly correlated systems remain rare. Here, we present a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect and extended topological magnetic ordering in Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 with hexagonal C 6v symmetry. Observation of topological Hall response, corroborated by metamagnetic anomalies in isothermal magnetization, peak/hump features in field-evolution of ac susceptibility and longitudinal resistivity suggest the signature of topological magnetic phases. The anomalous Hall effect is quantitatively accounted for by the intrinsic Berry curvature-mediated mechanism. Finally, our results underscore polar magnets as a promising platform to investigate a plethora of emergent electrodynamic responses rooted in the interplay between magnetism and topology.

Detecting axionlike dark matter with linearly polarized pulsar light

QCD axions or axionlike particles are among the most popular candidates for cold dark matter (DM) in the Universe. We proposed to detect axionlike DM, using linearly polarized pulsar light as a probe. Because of birefringence effect potentially caused by an oscillating galactic axion DM background, when pulsar light travels across the Galaxy, its linear polarization angle may vary with time. With a soliton + NFW galactic DM halo profile, we show that this strategy can potentially probe an axion-photon coupling as small as ~10 –13 GeV –1 for axion mass $m_a$ ~ 10 –22 –10 –20 eV , given the current measurement accuracy. An exclusion limit stronger than CAST (~ 10 –10 GeV –1 ) and SN1987A (~ 10 –11 GeV –1 ) could be extended up to $m_a$ ~ 10 –18 eV and ~10 –19 eV, respectively.

BICEP/ Keck XII: Constraints on axionlike polarization oscillations in the cosmic microwave background

Here, we present a search for axionlike polarization oscillations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with observations from the Keck Array . A local axion field induces an all-sky, temporally sinusoidal rotation of CMB polarization. A CMB polarimeter can thus function as a direct-detection experiment for axionlike dark matter. We develop techniques to extract an oscillation signal. Many elements of the method are generic to CMB polarimetry experiments and can be adapted for other datasets. As a first demonstration, we process data from the 2012 observing season to set upper limits on the axion-photon coupling constant in the mass range 10 – 21 – 10 – 18 eV , which corresponds to oscillation periods on the order of hours to months. We find no statistically significant deviations from the background model. For periods larger than 24 hr (mass m < 4.8 × 10 – 20 eV ), the median 95% confidence upper limit is equivalent to a rotation amplitude of 0.68°, which constrains the axion-photon coupling constant to g Φ γ < ( 1.1 × 10 – 11 GeV – 1 ) m / ( 10 – 21 eV ) , if axionlike particles constitute all of the dark matter. The constraints can be improved substantially with data already collected by the BICEP series of experiments. Current and future CMB polarimetry experiments are expected to achieve sufficient sensitivity to rule out unexplored regions of the axion parameter space.

BICEP/ K e c k XIV: Improved constraints on axionlike polarization oscillations in the cosmic microwave background

We present an improved search for axionlike polarization oscillations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with observations from the Keck Array . An all-sky, temporally sinusoidal rotation of CMB polarization, equivalent to a time-variable cosmic birefringence, is an observable manifestation of a local axion field and potentially allows a CMB polarimeter to detect axionlike dark matter directly. We describe improvements to the method presented in previous work, and we demonstrate the updated method with an expanded dataset consisting of the 2012–2015 observing seasons. We set limits on the axion-photon coupling constant for mass m in the range 10 - 23 – 10 - 18 eV , which corresponds to oscillation periods on the order of hours to years. Our results are consistent with the background model. For periods between 1 and 30 d ( 1.6 × 10 - 21 ≤ m ≤ 4.8 × 10 - 20 eV ), the 95%-confidence upper limits on rotation amplitude are approximately constant with a median of 0.27°, which constrains the axion-photon coupling constant to g φ γ < ( 4.5 × 10 - 12 GeV - 1 ) m / ( 10 - 21 eV ) , if axionlike particles constitute all of the dark matter. More than half of the collected BICEP dataset has yet to be analyzed, and several current and future CMB polarimetry experiments can apply the methods presented here to achieve comparable or superior constraints. In the coming years, oscillation measurements can achieve the sensitivity to rule out unexplored regions of the axion parameter space.

Spin polarization and correlation of quarks from the glasma

We investigate the interaction of strong color fields in the glasma stage of high-energy nuclear collisions with the spins of quarks and antiquarks. We employ the perturbative solution of the quantum kinetic theory for the spin transport of (massive) quarks in a background color field governed by the linearized Yang-Mills equation and derive expressions for the quark-spin polarization and quark-antiquark spin correlation at small momentum in terms of field correlators. For the Golec-Biernat–Wusthoff dipole distribution the quark-spin polarization vanishes, but the out-of-plane spin correlation of quarks and antiquarks is nonzero. Our order-of-magnitude estimate of the correlation far exceeds that caused by vorticity effects, but does not fully explain the data for vector meson alignment. We identify possible mechanisms that could further increase the predicted spin correlation.

Polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in semi-inclusive DIS at large 𝑄 2 : Comparing quark fragmentation and photon-gluon fusion

We compare the relative importance of different mechanisms for polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at large 𝑄 2 . The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework and nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics are used to study the leading contributions from light quark fragmentation to polarized 𝐽/𝜓, and compared to direct production via photon-gluon fusion, which can proceed through color-singlet as well as color-octet mechanisms. We identify kinematic regimes where light quark fragmentation dominates, allowing for the extraction of the 3 𝑆$^{[8]}_{1}$ matrix element, as well as regimes where photon gluon fusion dominates, suggesting that the gluon TMD parton distribution function can be probed.

Moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from lattice QCD at the physical point

The second Mellin moments ⟨ x ⟩ of the nucleon’s unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions are computed. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used: these were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2 + 1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. The moments are extracted from forward matrix elements of local leading twist operators. We determine renomalization factors in RI-(S)MOM and match to MS ¯ at scale 2 GeV. Our findings show that operators that exhibit vanishing kinematics at zero momentum can have significantly reduced excited-state contamination. The resulting polarized moment is used to quantify the longitudinal contribution to the quark spin-orbit correlation. All our results agree within two sigma with previous lattice results. Quarkonium polarization in medium from open quantum systems and chromomagnetic correlators

Here, by considering the Markovian condition and applying the Wigner transformation upon the diagonal spin components of the quarkonium density matrix with the semiclassical expansion, we systematically derive the Boltzmann transport equation for quarkonia with polarization dependence in the quantum optical limit. Unlike the spin-independent collision terms governed by certain chromoelectric field correlators, new gauge invariant correlators of chromomagnetic fields determine the recombination and dissociation terms with polarization dependence at the order we are working. We also derive a Lindblad equation describing the in-medium transitions between spin-singlet and spin-triplet heavy quark-antiquark pairs in the quantum Brownian motion limit. The Lindblad equation is governed by new transport coefficients defined in terms of the chromomagnetic field correlators. Our formalism is generic and valid for both weakly coupled and strongly coupled quark gluon plasmas. It can be further applied to study spin alignment of vector quarkonia in heavy ion collisions.

Measurement of the D * longitudinal polarization in B 0 → D * − τ + ν τ decays

The longitudinal polarization fraction of the D * meson is measured in B 0 → D * − τ + ν τ decays, where the τ lepton decays to three charged pions and a neutrino, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb − 1 . The D * polarization fraction F L D * is measured in two q 2 regions, below and above 7 GeV 2 / c 4 , where q 2 is defined as the squared invariant mass of the τ ν τ system. The F L D * values are measured to be 0.52 ± 0.07 ± 0.04 and 0.34 ± 0.08 ± 0.02 for the lower and higher q 2 regions, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The average value over the whole q 2 range is F L D * = 0.41 ± 0.06 ± 0.03 . These results are compatible with the Standard Model predictions. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Role of the chiral anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering. III. Wess-Zumino-Witten contributions and chiral Ward identities for finite quark mass

We extend our prior results on the worldline computation of the axial vector-vector-vector (AVV) triangle anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) to the finite mass case by computing in addition the pseudoscalar-vector-vector (PVV) triangle graph. For the well-studied QED case, we show explicitly how the off-forward AVV pole exactly cancels an identical PVV pole. We then demonstrate the dramatic difference in QCD due to the chiral condensate, which qualitatively modifies anomalous Ward identities. As in the massless case, the anomaly pole in QCD is canceled by the dynamics of a primordial isosinglet pseudoscalar η ¯ -meson, whose Wess-Zumino-Witten coupling to the topological charge density shifts the pole to the physical η ′ mass, with the finite quark mass contribution differing by O ( 10 % ) from the Witten-Veneziano formula. We obtain a compact analytic expression for the finite mass corrections to Shore and Veneziano’s result that the proton’s net quark helicity Δ Σ ∝ χ QCD ′ | m = 0 ( 0 ) , the forward slope of the topological susceptibility in the chiral limit, and show they are of the order of a few percentages. Our prior prediction that the polarized DIS structure function g 1 is quenched by sphaleronlike topological transitions at small x is unaffected by quark mass effects. Our results illustrate how worldline computations of anomalous processes, in synergy with lattice computations and nonet chiral perturbation theory, can uncover novel nonperturbative features of QCD at the Electron-Ion Collider. Measurement of the branching fraction, polarization, and time-dependent C P asymmetry in B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays and constraint on the CKM angle ϕ 2

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and fraction of longitudinal polarization of B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays, which have two π 0 ’s in the final state. We also measure time-dependent C P violation parameters for decays into longitudinally polarized ρ + ρ − pairs. This analysis is based on a data sample containing ( 387 ± 6 ) × 10 6 ϒ ( 4 S ) mesons collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider in 2019–2022. We obtain B ( B 0 → ρ + ρ − ) = ( 2.8 9 − 0.22 + 0.23 − 0.27 + 0.29 ) × 10 − 5 , f L = 0.92 1 − 0.025 + 0.024 − 0.015 + 0.017 , S = − 0.26 ± 0.19 ± 0.08 , and C = − 0.02 ± 0.1 2 − 0.05 + 0.06 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We use these results to perform an isospin analysis to constrain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle ϕ 2 and obtain two solutions; the result consistent with other Standard Model constraints is ϕ 2 = ( 92.6 − 4.7 + 4.5 ) ° . Measurements of the temperature and $E$-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background from the full 500-square-degree SPTpol dataset

Using the full four-year SPTpol 500 deg 2 dataset in both the 95 and 150 GHz frequency bands, we present measurements of the temperature and E-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), as well as the E-mode polarization autopower spectrum (EE) and temperature-E-mode cross-power spectrum (TE) in the angular multipole range 50 < ℓ < 8000. We find the SPTpol dataset to be self-consistent, passing several internal consistency tests based on maps, frequency bands, bandpowers, and cosmological parameters. The full SPTpol dataset is well-fit by the ΛCDM model, for which we find H 0 = 70.48 ± 2.16 km s -1 Mpc -1 and Ω m = 0.271 ± 0.026, when using only the SPTpol data and a Planck-based prior on the optical depth to reionization. The ΛCDM parameter constraints are consistent across the 95 GHz-only, 150 GHz-only, TE-only, and EE-only data splits. Between the ℓ < 1000 and ℓ > 1000 data splits, the ΛCDM parameter constraints are borderline consistent at the ∼2σ level. This consistency improves when including a parameter A L , the degree of lensing of the CMB inferred from the smearing of acoustic peaks. When marginalized over A L , the ΛCDM parameter constraints from SPTpol are consistent with those from Planck. In conclusion, the power spectra presented here are the most sensitive measurements of the lensed CMB damping tail to date for roughly ℓ > 1700 in TE and ℓ > 2000 in EE.

Internal Delensing of Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization B -Modes with the POLARBEAR Experiment

Using only cosmic microwave background polarization data from the polarbear experiment, we measure B-mode polarization delensing on subdegree scales at more than 5σ significance. We achieve a 14% B-mode power variance reduction, the highest to date for internal delensing, and improve this result to 22% by applying for the first time an iterative maximum a posteriori delensing method. Our analysis demonstrates the capability of internal delensing as a means of improving constraints on inflationary models, paving the way for the optimal analysis of next-generation primordial B-mode experiments.

Spontaneous Creation of Circularly Polarized Photons in Chiral Astrophysical Systems

This work establishes a relation between chiral anomalies in curved spacetimes and the radiative content of the gravitational field. In particular, we show that a flux of circularly polarized gravitational waves triggers the spontaneous creation of photons with net circular polarization from the quantum vacuum. Using waveform catalogs, we identify precessing binary black holes as astrophysical configurations that emit such gravitational radiation and then solve the fully nonlinear Einstein’s equations with numerical relativity to evaluate the net effect. The quantum amplitude for a merger is comparable to the Hawking emission rate of the final black hole and small to be directly observed. However, the implications for the inspiral of binary neutron stars could be more prominent, as argued on symmetry grounds.

Magnetic-Domain-Wall-Induced Electrical Polarization in Rare-Earth Iron Garnet Systems: A First-Principles Study

In this work, first-principles methods are employed to understand the existence of magnetic-domain-wall-induced electric polarization observed in rare-earth iron garnets. In contrast with previous beliefs, it is found that the occurrence of such polarization neither requires the local magnetic moments of the rare-earth ions nor noncollinear magnetism. It can rather be understood as originating from a magnetoelectric effect arising from ferromagnetic interactions between octahedral and tetrahedral Fe ions at the domain walls, and the mechanism behind is found to be a symmetric exchange-striction mechanism.
