Modernizing to an AI-Ready Control System

The Accelerator Controls Operations Research Network (ACORN) project will modernize the accelerator control system and upgrade power supplies to enable future operations of the Fermilab Accelerator Complex with megawatt proton beams. By focusing on MLOps, ACORN enables full integration of AI into the control system to allow safe and reliable improvements to accelerator beam operations.

Space-charge effects in ionization beam profile monitors

Ionization profile monitors (IPMs) are widely used in accelerators for non-destructive and fast diagnostics of high energy particle beams. At high beam intensities, the space-charge forces make the measured IPM profiles significantly different from those of the beams. We analyze dynamics of the secondaries in IPMs and develop an effective algorithm to reconstruct the beam sizes from the measured IPM profiles. Efficiency of the developed theory is illustrated in application to the Fermilab 8 GeV proton Booster IPMs.

Ionization Profile Monitors for the IOTA Proton Beam

Ionization profile monitors (IPMs) are widely used in accelerators for non-destructive and fast diagnostics of high energy particle beams. Two such monitors - one vertical and one horizontal - are being developed for installation in the IOTA storage ring at Fermilab. They will be used for turn-by-turn (microseconds scale) measurements of the 70 MeV/c IOTA proton beam sizes. In this paper we present the IPMs design (largely following the FNAL Booster IPMs which employ no external guiding magnetic fields), their mechanical, vacuum, and electric subsystems and DAQ, and discuss anticipated effects on the beams circulating in IOTA.

What is needed for BISCO to work in a dipole insert for 20 tesla hybrid accelerator magnets

Developing HTS dipole inserts producing fields larger than 5 T within 15 T Nb3Sn outserts is necessary to generate 20 T or higher fields for future high energy colliders. Dipole inserts based on the cos-theta coil geometry with various stress management concepts and Bi2212 super-conducting strand and cable are being developed at Fermilab both within and beyond the U.S. national effort. On paper, the potential reach for the maximum magnetic field in existing or planned Nb3Sn outserts is close to 20 T, thanks to the progress realized in Bi2212 wires’ critical current density. To achieve the Bi2212 potential in accelerator magnets, however, a number of technological challenges still have to be faced. These for instance include the need to design billets that are adequate for Rutherford cabling; developing insulation processes and materials that prevent leaks, which reduce transport current and increase the risk of shorts; control and limit Bi2212 coils’ stresses and strains; reconsider the Split Melt Process (SMP) to lower costs and simplify the processing. This paper reviews Bi2212 conductor properties and coil technolo-gies, and proposes new ideas to face the challenges that Bi2212 still presents as an accelerator magnet conductor.

Development of a Web-Based Graphical User Interface for Fermilab Robots

This project provides the students/faculty team with the unique opportunity to work with several robots. Additionally, the student team will be able to learn from the experience of the Robotics Initiative members who have a wide variety of technical backgrounds outside of software development. Working with an interdisciplinary group to solve a complex problem that is unique to our facility, is a valuable experience that the lab can provide. This project aligns with the ACORN projects R&D efforts regarding the integration of robotics status/control with the accelerator control system.
