Multiple Roles of Alkanethiolate‐Ligands in Direct Formation of H 2 O 2 over Pd Nanoparticles

Abstract Coadsorbed organic species including thiolates can promote direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from H 2 and O 2 over Pd particles. Here, density functional theory based kinetic modeling, augmented with activity measurements and vibrational spectroscopy are used to provide atomistic understanding of direct H 2 O 2 formation over alkylthiolate(RS) Pd. We find that the RS species are oxidized during reaction conditions yielding RSO 2 as the effective ligand. The RSO 2 ligand shows superior ability for proton transfer to the intermediate surface species OOH, which accelerates the formation of H 2 O 2 . The ligands promote the selectivity also by blocking sites for unselective water formation and by modifying the electronic structure of Pd. The work rationalizes observations of enhanced selectivity of direct H 2 O 2 formation over ligand‐funtionalized Pd nanoparticles and shows that engineering of organic surface modifiers can be used to promote desired hydrogen transfer routes.

Porous and Water Stable 2D Hybrid Metal Halide with Broad Light Emission and Selective H 2 O Vapor Sorption

Abstract In this work we report a strategy for generating porosity in hybrid metal halide materials using molecular cages that serve as both structure‐directing agents and counter‐cations. Reaction of the [2.2.2] cryptand (DHS) linker with Pb II in acidic media gave rise to the first porous and water‐stable 2D metal halide semiconductor (DHS) 2 Pb 5 Br 14 . The corresponding material is stable in water for a year, while gas and vapor‐sorption studies revealed that it can selectively and reversibly adsorb H 2 O and D 2 O at room temperature (RT). Solid‐state NMR measurements and DFT calculations verified the incorporation of H 2 O and D 2 O in the organic linker cavities and shed light on their molecular configuration. In addition to porosity, the material exhibits broad light emission centered at 617 nm with a full width at half‐maximum (FWHM) of 284 nm (0.96 eV). The recorded water stability is unparalleled for hybrid metal halide and perovskite materials, while the generation of porosity opens new pathways towards unexplored applications ( e.g . solid‐state batteries) for this class of hybrid semiconductors.

Facet-Selective Deposition of Ultrathin Al 2 O 3 on Copper Nanocrystals for Highly Stable CO 2 Electroreduction to Ethylene.

Catalysts based on Cu nanocrystals (NCs) for electrochemical CO 2 -to- 2+ conversion with high activity have been a subject of considerable interest, but poor stability and low selectivity for a single C 2+ product remain obstacles for realizing sustainable carbon-neutral cycles. In this study, we used the facet-selective atomic layer deposition (FS-ALD) technique to selectively cover the (111) surface of Cu NCs with ultrathin Al 2 O 3 to increase the exposed facet ratio of (100)/(111), resulting in a faradaic efficiency ratio of C 2 H 4 /CH 4 for overcoated Cu NCs 22 times higher than that for pure Cu NCs. Peak performance of the overcoated catalyst (Cu NCs/Al 2 O 3 -10C) reaches a C 2 H 4 faradaic efficiency of 60.4 % at a current density of 300 mA cm -2 in 5 M KOH electrolyte, when using a gas diffusion electrode flow cell. Moreover, the Al 2 O 3 overcoating effectively suppresses the dynamic mobility and the aggregation of Cu NCs, which explains the negligible activity loss and selectivity degradations of Cu NCs/Al 2 O 3 -10C shown in stability tests.

Stabilization Of The CN 3 5− Anion In Recoverable High‐pressure Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) Oxoguanidinates

Abstract A series of isostructural Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) oxoguanidinates was synthesized under high‐pressure (25–54 GPa) high‐temperature (2000–3000 K) conditions in laser‐heated diamond anvil cells. The crystal structure of this novel class of compounds was determined via synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) as well as corroborated by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) solids are composed of the hitherto unknown CN 3 5− guanidinate anion—deprotonated guanidine. Changes in unit cell volumes and compressibility of Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) compounds are found to be dictated by the lanthanide contraction phenomenon. Decompression experiments show that Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions. The stabilization of the CN 3 5− guanidinate anion at ambient conditions provides new opportunities in inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry.

High Pressure Synthesis of Pr 2 O 5 – A Unique Lanthanoid(IV) Oxide Peroxide

Abstract Reacting praseodymium(IV) oxide with oxygen at 27 GPa in a diamond anvil cell yielded the oxide peroxide Pr 2 IV (O 2 )O 3 , which was characterized by single crystal X‐ray diffraction on multi‐grain samples, Raman spectroscopy and quantum theoretical calculations at various pressure points. The presence of tetravalent praseodymium ions is supported by electronic structure calculations, showing a band gap of ca. 1.2 eV, which is consistent with the anticipated chemical model of an ionic solid. Pr 2 (O 2 )O 3 thus far represents the most oxygen rich phase of any binary compound of a lanthanoid and oxygen and is the first example of a peroxide anion next to Pr 4+ . Additionally, these results demonstrate that instead of oxidizing the praseodymium ions past their +IV oxidation state, oxygen undergoes a comproportionation to form peroxide anions. Direct oxidation of the oxide anions by Pr 4+ ‐ions was ruled out by a control experiment in argon instead of oxygen, where no oxidation of oxide ions was observed.

Amorphization of Pseudocapacitive T−Nb 2 O 5 Accelerates Lithium Diffusivity as Revealed Using Tunable Isomorphic Architectures

Abstract Intercalation pseudocapacitance can combine capacitor‐like power densities with battery‐like energy densities. Such surface‐limited behavior requires rapid diffusion where amorphization can increase solid‐state diffusivity. Here intercalation pseudocapacitive materials with tailored extents of amorphization in T‐Nb 2 O 5 are first reported. Amorphization was characterized with WAXS, XPS, XAFS, and EPR which suggested a peroxide‐rich (O 2 2− ) surface that was consistent with DFT predictions. A series of tunable isomorphic architectures enabled comparisons while independently varying transport parameters. Through process of elimination, solid‐state lithium diffusion was identified as the dominant diffusive‐constraint dictating the maximum voltage sweep rate for surface‐limited kinetics ( v SLT ), termed the Surface‐Limited Threshold (SLT). The v SLT increased with amorphization however stable cycling required crystalline T‐Nb 2 O 5 . A current‐response model using series‐impedances well‐matched these observations. This perspective revealed that amorphization of T‐Nb 2 O 5 enhanced solid‐state diffusion by 12.2 % and increased surface‐limitations by 17.0 % (stable samples). This approach enabled retaining 95 % lithiation capacity at ∼800 mV s −1 (1,600 C‐rate equivalent).

Ionothermally Synthesized Nanoporous Ti 0.95 W 0.05 Nb 2 O 7 : a Novel Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Although TiNb 2 O 7 is regarded as a fast-rechargeable lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode material, the intrinsic poor electrochemical kinetics of TiNb 2 O 7 still dramatically impedes its development. Herein, an ionothermal synthesis-assisted doping strategy is proposed for the preparation of a new W 6+ -doped TiNb 2 O 7 material (Ti 0.95 W 0.05 Nb 2 O 7 ) with nanoporous structure (denoted as NPTWNO). The improved Li + diffusion coefficient of NPTWNO suggests that the ionic-liquid-templated nanoporous architecture improves the Li+ diffusion kinetics. The density functional theory computational study reveals that the doped W 6+ successfully boosts the electronic conductivity due to the narrowed conduction-valance bandgap resulted from charge redistribution, which is reflected by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data. With the simultaneously enhanced Li+ diffusivity and electronic conductivity, NPTWNO achieves fast-rechargeability in LIBs. So this work indicates the potential of ionothermal synthesis-assisted doping strategy on energy storage materials and offers NPTWNO material with promising electrochemical performance.

17 O NMR Spectroscopy Reveals CO 2 Speciation and Dynamics in Hydroxide-Based Carbon Capture Materials

Carbon dioxide capture technologies are set to play a vital role in mitigating the current climate crisis. Solid-state 17 O NMR spectroscopy can provide key mechanistic insights that are crucial to effective sorbent development. In this work, we present the fundamental aspects and complexities for the study of hydroxide-based CO 2 capture systems by 17 O NMR. We perform static density functional theory (DFT) NMR calculations to assign peaks for general hydroxide CO 2 capture products, finding that 17 O NMR can readily distinguish bicarbonate, carbonate and water species. However, in application to CO 2 binding in two test case hydroxide-functionalised metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) – MFU-4l and KHCO 3 -cyclodextrin-MOF, we find that a dynamic treatment is necessary to obtain agreement between computational and experimental spectra. We therefore introduce a workflow that leverages machine-learning force fields to capture dynamics across multiple chemical exchange regimes, providing a significant improvement on static DFT predictions. In MFU-4l, we parameterise a two-component dynamic motion of the bicarbonate motif involving a rapid carbonyl seesaw motion and intermediate hydroxyl proton hopping. For KHCO 3 -CD-MOF, we combined experimental and modelling approaches to propose a new mixed carbonate-bicarbonate binding mechanism and thus, we open new avenues for the study and modelling of hydroxide-based CO 2 capture materials by 17 O NMR.

Photoexcitation of Fe 3 O Nodes in MOF Drives Water Oxidation at pH=1 When Ru Catalyst Is Present

Abstract Artificial photosynthesis strives to convert the energy of sunlight into sustainable, eco‐friendly solar fuels. However, systems with light‐driven water oxidation reaction (WOR) at pH=1 are rare. Broadly used [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ (bpy=2,2’‐bipyridine) photosensitizer has a fixed +1.23 V potential which is insufficient to drive most water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) in acid, while Fe 2 O 3 , featuring the highly oxidizing holes, is not stable at low pH. Here, the key examples of Fe‐based metal–organic framework (MOF) water oxidation photoelectrocatalysts active at pH=1 are presented. Fe‐MIL‐126 and Fe MOF‐dcbpy structures were formed with 4,4’‐biphenyl dicarboxylate (bpdc), 2,2’‐bipyridine‐5,5’‐dicarboxylate (dcbpy) linkers and their mixtures. Presence of dcbpy linkers allows integration of metal‐based catalysts via coordination to 2,2’‐bipyridine fragments. Fe‐based MOFs were doped with Ru‐based precursors to achieve highly active MOFs bearing [Ru(bpy)(dcbpy)(H 2 O) 2 ] 2+ WOC. Materials were analyzed with X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infra‐red (FTIR) spectroscopy, resonance Raman, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, fs optical pump‐probe, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), diffuse reflectance and electric conductivity measurements and were modeled by band structure calculations. It is shown that under reaction conditions, Fe III and Ru III oxidation states are present, indicating rate‐limiting electron transfer in MOF. Fe 3 O nodes emerge as photosensitizers able to drive prolonged O 2 evolution in acid. Further developments are possible via MOF's linker modification for enhanced light absorption, electrical conductivity, reduced MOF solubility in acid, Ru‐WOC modification for faster WOC catalysis, or Ru‐WOC substitution to 3d metal‐based systems. The findings give further insight for development of light‐driven water splitting systems based on Earth‐abundant metals.

Identifying Hidden Li–Si–O Phases for Lithium‐Ion Batteries via First‐Principle Thermodynamic Calculations

SiO–based materials are promising alloys and conversion‐type anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries and are recently found to be excellent dendrite‐proof layers for lithium‐metal batteries. However, only a small fraction of the Li–Si–O compositional space has been reported, significantly impeding the understanding of the phase transition mechanisms and the rational design of these materials both as anodes and as protection layers for lithium‐metal anodes. Herein, we identify three new thermodynamically stable phases within the Li–Si–O ternary system (Li 2 SiO 5 , Li 4 SiO 6, and Li 4 SiO 8 ) in addition to the existing records via first‐principle calculations. The electronic structure simulation shows that Li 2 SiO 5 and Li 4 SiO 8 phases are metallic in nature, ensuring high electronic conductivity required as electrodes. Moduli calculations demonstrate that the mechanical strength of Li–Si–O phases is much higher than that of lithium metal. The diffusion barriers of interstitial Li range from 0.1 to 0.6 eV and the interstitial Li hopping serves as the dominating diffusion mechanism in the Li–Si–O ternary systems compared with vacancy diffusion. These findings provide a new strategy for future discovery of improved alloying anodes for lithium‐ion batteries and offer important insight towards the understanding of the phase transformation mechanism of alloy‐type protection layers on lithium‐metal anodes.

Vegetation water sources in California's Sierra Nevada (USA) are young and change over time, a multi-isotope ( δ 18 O, δ 2 H, 3 H) tracer approach.

Sierra Nevada forests transpire a significant amount of California's water resources, sparking interest in applying forest management to improve California's water supply. Determining the source water of evapotranspiration enables forest managers to make informed decisions. To this end, a significant interest in critical zone science is to develop new methods to work across time scales to predict subsurface water storage and use. Here, forest vegetation accessed young water and switched sources depending on availability, suggesting that forest drought vulnerability may depend on the range of water sources available (rain, snowmelt and deeply stored water). This finding also suggests that changes in transpiration rates may have immediate effects on water sources in close proximity to vegetation, and delayed effects on storage and runoff. New δ 18 O, δ 2 H and 3 H data were used to track precipitation, runoff, evapotranspiration and storage through the critical zone seasonally, including seasons where evapotranspiration and snowmelt were in phase (winter snowmelt) and out of phase (seasonally dry summer). The main source of this headwater catchment's runoff is derived from its meadow saturated zone water, which was dominated by snowmelt. Water that originated as snowmelt contributed to transpiration, unless other sources, such as recent rain, became available. In cases where xylem δ 18 O and δ 2 H signatures matched those of deeper saturated zone water, 3 H data showed that xylem water was distinctly younger than the deep saturated zone water. During 2016, which experienced relatively normal snowpack in winter and seasonally dry summer conditions, mean summer saturated zone water and vegetation water were similar in δ 18 O, –12.4 ± 0.04 ‰ and – 12.5 ± 0.3 ‰, respectively, but were distinctly different in 3 H, 5.5 ± 0.2 pCi/L and 13.7 ± 1.1 pCi/L, respectively. While δ 18 O shows that vegetation and meadow saturated zone water have similar origins, 3 H shows they have dissimilar ages.

Significantly increased Raman enhancement on defect-rich O-incorporated 1T-MoS 2 nanosheets

Improving charge transfer is the key to the performance of non-noble metal semiconductor-based surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. In this work, the O-incorporated 1T-MoS 2 nanosheets with rich sulfur defects (ID-MoS 2 ) are obtained by simple calcination of 1T-MoS 2 nanosheets in air atmosphere. Using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as typical probe molecules, ID-MoS 2 nanosheets show ultrahigh Raman enhancement effects with an enhancement factor of 1.24 × 10 7 due to sulfur defects and O incorporation in the 1T-MoS 2 lattice. First-principle density functional theory calculations suggest that the existence of sulfur defects and O incorporation significantly increase the Fermi energy level (E f ) and electronic density of states of ID-MoS 2 . Furthermore, O incorporation can enhance the interactions between the substrate and the adsorbed molecules through electrostatic and hydrogen bonding. All these improve the charge transfer resonance and result in the remarkable SERS activity of ID-MoS 2 nanosheets. This is the first study on the increasing SERS performance of semiconductor substrates by simultaneously employing defect and dopant incorporation. This study provides an approach to optimize the performance of semiconductor-based SERS substrates.

Chemo-Mechanics of α-V 2 O 5 During Lithiation and Implications for Rechargeable Battery Cathodes

Chemo-mechanical degradation of layered oxide electrodes is strongly influenced by crystallographic anisotropy, local stress evolution, and ion insertion, yet the intrinsic mechanical response of layered materials remains incompletely understood. Indeed, most prior studies have focused on polycrystalline materials but single crystals enable direct observation of coupling between anisotropic ion diffusion and mechanical response. This study aims to determine how crystallographic anisotropy and lithiation affect deformation, fracture, and mechanical properties in single-crystal V 2 O 5 , and compares this behavior with polycrystalline counterparts. Polycrystalline V 2 O 5 thin films and single-crystal α-V 2 O 5 were studied using nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam cross-sectioning, and Raman spectroscopy. Single crystals were tested in pristine and chemically lithiated states, including experiments in which crystals were first plastically deformed via nanoindentation and subsequently lithiated. Polycrystalline films exhibited significantly higher hardness and elastic modulus than single crystals. Single crystals indented normal to the exposed (001) basal plane exhibited pronounced anisotropic deformation, including directional slip, crystallographically-guided cracking, anisotropic crack propagation, interlayer separation, and shear localization. Lithiation caused substantial softening, reduced hardness and modulus, and suppressed displacement bursts during nanoindentation, while previously indented regions showed crack formation and growth upon lithiation. Mechanical behavior of α-V 2 O 5 is strongly governed by crystallographic anisotropy and further altered by lithiation, with pre-existing deformation serving as a strong driver of fracture during ion insertion. These findings illuminate the coupling among ion insertion, deformation, and fracture in layered oxides and provide a basis for understanding and mitigating mechanical failure in electrochemical energy-storage materials.

Fast oxygen redox enabled by flexible Al–O bonds in P2-type layered oxides for sodium batteries

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) exhibit significant potential for large-scale energy storage systems due to the abundance and low cost of sodium resources. Triggering lattice oxygen redox (LOR) in P2-type transition metal oxides is considered a promising approach to enhance energy density in SIB cathodes, providing high operating potential and substantial capacity. However, irreversible phase transitions associated with LOR, particularly from prisms (P-type stacking) to octahedrons (O-type stacking), lead to severe structural distortions and sluggish Na + diffusion kinetics. In this work, an Al-substitution strategy is proposed to suppress the formation of O-type stacking and instead promote the formation of a beneficial Z phase. Furthermore, the flexible Al-O bonds accommodate asymmetric variations in their occupied states during the sodiation process, mitigating local structural distortions through Al-O bond contraction. Stabilization of the local structure ensures the maintenance of a robust Na + diffusion pathway. As a result, the Al-substituted cathode achieves a low Na + diffusion barrier of 0.47 eV and delivers a capacity of 86 mAh/g even at a high current density of 1 A/g within 1.5–4.5 V, maintaining 62.5% capacity retention over 100 cycles.

On the various Cu-redox pathways and O 2 -mediated Bronsted-to-Lewis adsorbed-NH 3 redistribution under SCR half-cycle conditions

The Standard SCR reaction on Cu-SSZ-13 is a complex redox process facilitated by a reduction half cycle (RHC) and an oxidation half cycle (OHC). It is generally accepted that RHC requires the simultaneous presence of NO and NH 3 , while OHC requires both NO and O 2 ; however understanding of how these individual reactants impact the Cu redox cycle is limited. In this work, we provide experimental investigation of NO-only, NH 3 -only and NO+NH 3 RHC, and their relative rates. Simple kinetic models were developed to understand the dependance of NO-only and NH 3 -only RHC on Cu speciation. Various OHC routes including NO+O 2 and O 2 -only OHC, and a previously unreported H 2 O-mediated OHC pathway were also investigated. Detailed NH 3 temperature-programmed desorption studies showed that RHC selectively consumes NH 3 adsorbed on Lewis-acid sites, and that part of the remaining Bronsted-bound NH 3 moves to the Lewis-acid sites during subsequent OHC, thereby resulting in a repartitioning of adsorbed NH 3 .

Optimization and understanding of ZnO nanoarray supported Cu-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 catalyst for enhanced CO 2 -methanol conversion at low temperature and pressure

Cu-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 is the most widely applied catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. However, it is still a challenge to produce methanol using this catalyst under low-temperature (<250 °C) and low-pressure (<10 bar) conditions with desirable yield and selectivity. In this work, by tuning the experimental processing parameters such as solvent, loading amount, and annealing temperature, highly improved ZnO nanoarray supported Cu-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts have been successfully demonstrated. Here, by using organic solvent (N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), acetone, or isopropanol) for dip-coating loading process instead of deionized (DI) water, Cu-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 nanocatalysts was comparatively better dispersed on the nanorod array support with populated and abundant active sites, thus enhancing the methanol yield. With the control of the loading amount and annealing temperature, finely distributed Cu nanoparticles were obtained on the ZnO nanorod surfaces to enhance the interactions between Cu and ZnO nanorod surfaces. Further improvement of the catalyst performance is demonstrated by tuning the reaction space velocity. At 200 °C and 10 bar conditions, the optimized catalyst achieved a methanol yield of 6.46 mol h –1 kg –1 with 100 % selectivity. The good stability after prolonged testing of the catalysts demonstrates the potential practical implementation. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) measurements under the 1 bar reveal that the CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol on the ZnO nanoarray supported Cu-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 catalyst follows the CO reaction pathway, due to the surface oxygen vacancies on ZnO nanorods which facilitate CO 2 dissociation.
