New syndrome decoding techniques for the (n, k) convolutional codes

This paper presents a new syndrome decoding algorithm for the (n, k) convolutional codes (CC) which differs completely from an earlier syndrome decoding algorithm of Schalkwijk and Vinck. The new algorithm is based on the general solution of the syndrome equation, a linear Diophantine equation for the error polynomial vector E(D). The set of Diophantine solutions is a coset of the CC. In this error coset a recursive, Viterbi-like algorithm is developed to find the minimum weight error vector (circumflex)E(D). An example, illustrating the new decoding algorithm, is given for the binary nonsystemmatic (3, 1)CC. Previously announced in STAR as N83-34964

Analysis of the electron-beam-induced current of a polycrystalline p-n junction when the diffusion lengths of the material on either side of a grain boundary differ

The short circuit current generated by the electron beam of a scanning electron microscope in p-n junctions is reduced by enhanced recombination at grain boundaries in polycrystalline material. Frequently, grain boundaries separate the semiconductor into regions possessing different minority carrier life times. This markedly affects the short circuit current I(sc) as a function of scanning distance from the grain boundary. It will be shown theoretically that (1) the minimum of the I(sc) in crossing the grain boundary with the scanning electron beam is shifted away from the grain boundary toward the region with smaller life time (shorter diffusion length), (2) the magnitude of the minimum differs markedly from those calculated under the assumption of equal diffusion lengths on either side of the grain boundary, and (3) the minimum disappears altogether for small surface recombination velocities (s less than 10,000 cm/s). These effects become negligible, however, for large recombination velocities s at grain boundaries. For p-type silicon this happens for s not less than 100,000 cm/s.

The medium sensitivity survey - A new sample of X-ray sources with optical identifications and the revised extragalactic log N-log S

Maccacaro et al. (1982) surveyed approximately 50 sq deg in different regions of the sky at medium sensitivity flux levels intermediate between the Uhuru/Ariel V limit and the Einstein deep survey limit. This 'first' medium sensitivity survey (MSS 1) was primarily aimed at the analysis of the source-count relation for extragalactic X-ray sources. The present investigation is concerned with an extension of the MSS 1 on the basis of an analysis of new fields obtained with the aid of the Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) on board the Einstein Observatory. A parallel optical program to identify all the new sources was also undertaken. X-ray and optical data are presented for this 'second' complete sample of medium sensitivity survey X-ray sources (MSS 2). The log N-log S relation is derived and discussed.

Homogeneous condensation of gaseous mixtures of Si, Fe, O, N, and C in relative cosmic abundance and implications for astronomical condensation

The pressure versus temperature curves for homogeneous nucleation and condensation of two gaseous mixtures with nearly relative solar abundance of Si, Fe, O, N, and C in an excess of H were determined experimentally. Mixtures of CO, Fe(CO)5, H2, SiH4, and N2O in Ar were heated behind reflected shocks in a shock tube. The nucleation and condensation, which took place in the subsequent gas-dynamic expansion (cooling phase), was monitored by light scattering and turbidity. Grain morphologies and crystalline phases present in the condensates were determined by electron microscopy. These data cast doubt on the validity of both equilibrium and classical nucleation theoretical approaches to predict homogeneous condensation in a solar nebula or stellar atmosphere.

Low-frequency microwave radiometer for N-ROSS

The all weather, global determination of sea surface temperature (SST) has been identified as a requirement needed to support naval operations. The target SST accuracy is + or - 1.0 K with a surface resolution of 10 km. Investigations of the phenomenology and technology of remote passive microwave sensing of the ocean environment over the past decade have demonstrated that this objective is presently attainable. Preliminary specification and trade off studies were conducted to define the frequency, polarization, scan geometry, antenna size, and other esstential parameters of the low frequency microwave radiometer (LFMR). It will be a dual polarized, dual frequency system at 5.2 and 10.4 GHz using a 4.9 meter deployable mesh surface antenna. It is to be flown on the Navy-Remote Ocean Sensing System (N-ROSS) satellite scheduled to be launched in late 1988.

The H flux peak and the hydrogen abundance in N type carbon stars

For galactic N and late R type irregularly variable carbon stars, a comparison is made of airborne infrared spectrophotometry to spectral flux distributions derived from model atmospheres. Although the agreement is good in several respects, the H(-) emission peak at 1.6 microns, so prominent in the models, is significantly weakened in the stellar spectrophotometry. It seems unlikely that molecular bands in the stars can completely obliterate this peak. A plausible explanation is that hydrogen is deficient in these stars, most probably from an episode of mass loss. The resultant cold shells surrounding these stars should be amenable to observation by IRAS, or other far-infrared observatories.

Search for plasma shifts of C VI, N VII, and O VIII resonance lines

The resonance lines of the hydrogenlike ions C VI, N VII, and O VIII were observed in laser-produced plasmas with electron densities in the range 10 to the 21st - 10 to the 22nd per cu cm and electron temperatures between about 70 and 100 eV. The lines of the hydrogenlike ions were recorded photographically with a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. No significant plasma line shift was observed.

Free tropospheric measurements of CS2 over a 45 deg N to 45 deg S latitude range

The mean value obtained from 52 free tropospheric measurements of CS2 over the 45 deg N-45 deg S latitude range was 5.7 pptv, with standard deviation and standard error of 1.9 and 0.3 pptv, respectively. Large fluctuations in the CS2 concentration are observed which reflect the apparent short atmospheric residence time and inhomogeneities in the surface sources of CS2. The amounts of CS2 in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are statistically equal.

Steady-state currents in p-n junction filaments or grains in case of large surface recombination velocities at lateral surfaces

Recently it has been pointed out that the saturation current of a semiconductor filament which constitutes part of a p-n junction diverges when the surface recombination velocity at the faces become infinitely large. Here it is pointed out that this is to be expected on physical grounds since, whenever the carrier concentration is kept off equilibrium by an outside agent, and at the same time recombination lifetimes in the bulk or in surface layers tend to zero, concentration gradients tend to infinity. As also previously noted, the situation can be remedied by using realistic (finite) surface recombination velocities in model calculations. However, this procedure leads to mathematical complexities which have been circumvented recently by the introduction of a heuristic approach. It is the aim of this paper to assess the validity of the heuristic approach by means of detailed and exact calculations.

Wavelength coincidence of allowed and intercombination multiplets in N III and O IV - A density and/or temperature diagnostic

Two multiplets of N III with different intensity dependence on source conditions fall in the same wavelength interval near 1750 A, and the analogous multiplets in O IV also lie close together. It is suggested that the multiplet pair can be useful for diagnostic purposes. The calculated ratios are consistent with available observations. A preliminary inspection of solar flare spectra shows the presence of the higher-density-indicating allowed multiple in O IV.

Numerical techniques for large cosmological N-body simulations

Techniques for carrying out large N-body simulations of the gravitational evolution of clustering in the fundamental cube of an infinite periodic universe are described and compared. The accuracy of the forces derived from several commonly used particle mesh schemes is examined, showing how submesh resolution can be achieved by including short-range forces between particles by direct summation techniques. The time integration of the equations of motion is discussed, and the accuracy of the codes for various choices of 'time' variable and time step is tested by considering energy conservation as well as by direct analysis of particle trajectories. Methods for generating initial particle positions and velocities corresponding to a growing mode representation of a specified power spectrum of linear density fluctuations are described. The effects of force resolution are studied and different simulation schemes are compared. An algorithm is implemented for generating initial conditions by varying the number of particles, the initial amplitude of density fluctuations, and the initial peculiar velocity field.

p-n junction formation in InSb and InAs(1-x)Sb(x) by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition

p-n junctions have been fabricated in InSb and InAs(1-x)Sb(x)(0.4 less than x less than 0.7) using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. These junctions showed soft breakdown in addition to forward characteristics with a diode factor greater than 2. The ternary alloy has a cut-off wavelength in the 8-11-micron range, thus providing a potential material system for detectors covering the 8-12-micron range.

A comparison of flow rates and pressure profiles for N-sequential inlets and three related seal configurations

Experimental and analytical results are presented for choked flows of fluid nitrogen over a range of reduced inlet stagnation temperatures (from 0.67 to ambient) and reduced inlet stagnation pressures to 2. Flow rate and pressure profile comparisons are made between N aligned sequential orifice inlets, a 33-tooth labyrinth seal, a 3-step seal, a cylindrical seal and the classic venturi. Seal effectiveness appears strongly dependent on upstream losses and geometry configuration.

Submillimeter wave absorption of n-type InSb at low temperatures

The absorption coefficient of two high-purity n-InSb samples is measured in the 10-40 per cm range using Fourier transform spectroscopy. The absorption coefficient spectrum is presented for both samples at 4.2 K. It is also shown for the lower resistance sample cooled to 2.2 K and heated by dc bias to elevated electron gas temperatures of 7.5 and 17.9 K. ac Drude theory gives rather poor agreement with experiment at 2.2 and 4.2 K but does much better when the sample electron gas is heated. In contrast, a simple quantum mechanical theory of absorption based on inverse Bremsstrahlung yields promising agreement at the lower temperatures although its applicability is questionable. The non-Drudian absorption is shown to have a favorable effect on the performance of InSb hot-electron bolometers.

Fabrication of p(+)-n junction GaAs solar cells by a novel method

A novel method for making p(+)-n diffused junction GaAs solar cells, with the formation of a diffusion source, an anti-reflective coating, and a protective cover glass in a single chemical-vapor deposition operation is discussed. Consideration is given to device fabrication and to solar-cell characteristics. The advantages of the technique are that the number of process steps is kept to an absolute minimum, the fabrication procedure is low-cost, and the GaAs surface is protected during the entire operation.

Behavior of decaying El Chichon cloud over Toyokawa, Japan (35 deg N) observed by 532-NM lidar

The stratospheric aerosol state in 1982 and 1983 was in a violet excitation due to the eruption of Mt. El Chichon. A number of direct and indirect soundings of the stratosphere confirmed that the aftereffect of it covered almost the entire Northern Hemisphere by the end of 1982 (e.g., POLLACK et al., 1983). The lidar system constructed at Toyokawa (34.8 deg N, 137.4 deg E) have entered routine base observations since December 1982 (IWATA et al., 1983). The state of observations was 8 months after the eruption, and researchers missed monitoring the drastic variations in the stratosphere just following the event. However, the El Chichon cloud over Japan was reported to have reached the second maximum concentration in November or December 1982 according to the lidar observations at Tsukuba, Nagoya and Fukuoka, so the researchers' observations corresponded to the decaying phase of it. Presented are some characteristics of the aerosol profile over Toyokawa during a period of 20 months from December 1982 to July 1984.
