SLAC LINAC Sub-booster Modulator Upgrading with Solid State Switch

The LINAC sub-booster modulator was designed in last 60s decade and has serviced SLAC LINAC about 60 years without primary switching upgrade. The primary switch for high power pulse is vacuum tetrode switch. Recently the vacuum switch price has surged, probably because more and more customers have shifted to the solid-state switch from the vacuum switch. With the foresight of the vacuum switch will finally become obsolete in market, the solid-state switch has been tested in SLAC LINAC sub-booster modulator and the performance is evaluated. In this paper, the design and performance will be reported.

Bifacial Photovoltaic Module Degradation Dynamics

In a comprehensive study conducted at NREL's 75 kW bifacial single-axis-tracked field, accelerated degradation was observed in four out of five bifacial silicon photovoltaic (PV) module technologies when compared to their monofacial counterparts. Root cause analysis of accelerated bifacial degradation involved various analytical tools and techniques. This included employing RdTools to identify rates of power loss, conducting measurements on fielded and control modules using infrared imaging, electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL), quantum efficiency (QE) analysis, IV-curves assessment, as well as utilizing handheld Raman and reflectance measurement targeted at anti-reflective coating. Most cases pointed to carrier lifetime degradation causing Voc loss and simultaneous Isc loss. In some cases, Isc further decreases likely due to optical effects from encapsulant degradation. The outcomes and methodologies employed in this investigation are documented in this publication. This study's significance is further emphasized by placing the findings within the broader context of the performance and degradation of various bifacial systems, as identified in the PV Fleets data.

Human Health Risk Assessment for Improper Landfill Disposal of End-of-Life CdTe Modules

The present work is a continuation of the 2020 IEA PVPS Task 12 Human Health Risk Assessment Methods for PV Part 3: Module Disposal Risks. The 2020 report performed a human health risk assessment (HHRA) for disposal of a cadmium telluride (CdTe) PV module in an unlined landfill, focusing solely on risks from cadmium. This study extends the 2020 HHRA on CdTe PV, analyzing eleven constituent elements: Cd, Se, Te, Cu, Si, Cr(III), Mo, Sn, Zn, Ni, and Al. The present HHRA was performed through two methods: utilization of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) Delisting Risk Assessment Software (DRAS V.4.0) on eight exposure pathways for cancer risk and non-cancer hazards; and comparison of exposure point concentrations to federal standards for groundwater, surface water, air, and soil exposure pathways. Cancer risks and non-cancer hazards posed by elemental leaching through all evaluated exposure pathways, using both methods, were found to be several orders of magnitude below USEPA health-protective thresholds. Cadmium exhibited both the highest risks and lowest uncertainty considering data availability on chemical content, leachate, and federal screening levels.

CFD modeling of high-flux plate-and-frame membrane modules for industrial carbon capture

In this work, we explore the use of CO2-selective flat sheet membranes for capturing CO2 from point sources. We employ Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to design high-flux plate-and-frame membrane modules to achieve uniform flow distribution among membrane elements, minimize dead-end zones, and ease the common concentration polarization issue for gas separation membranes. The goal is to drive membrane technology improvements by providing better module designs for given membrane properties and operating conditions.

Performance Analysis of Phase 2 Tracker Upgrade PS Module Before and After Irradiation

The Large Hadron Collider will undergo a luminosity upgrade targeting a peak instantaneous luminosity ranging from 5 up to 7.5$\times10^{34}$\,cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The ambitious goal of the High Luminosity LHC is to achieve a total of 3000--4000\,fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 14\,TeV. To cope with such challenging environmental conditions, the outer tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using closely spaced silicon sensors (pixels and strips) to provide tracking information at the Level-1 trigger. A PS-Module, composed of both a pixel and a strip sensor, was tested at the Fermilab Test-Beam Facility to evaluate its ability to provide accurate tracking information, particle momentum discrimination capabilities and optimal performance at the irradiation levels expected after being exposed to the harsh conditions of the High Luminosity LHC. The results of the test and the comparison of the module performance before and after irradiation will be presented in this poster.

Interface Box for Dual Power Amplifier Modulators in Main Injector

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) aims to enhance the current Fermilab particle accelerator complex to intensify and accelerate more beam. The project will power the beam as it heads from Illinois to the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) in South Dakota by providing them with neutrinos. To intensify the beam, one of the PIP-II upgrades is to add a second power amplifier (PA) to the existing Main Injector cavities. In turn, this boosts the maximum output power to 400kW per station even though the PIP-II requirement is only 240kW. With more output power, more protons can be accelerated through the particle accelerator and in the case of the DUNE project, this is ideal given that the chance of a neutrino interacting with a proton or a neutron is one in ten billion. The power amplifier is added to the cavity and driven by the modulator. Within the modulator, the control unit receives input signals from the power supplies, moderates they are working properly, and controls the timing of the power up sequence. However, a challenge imposed by an additional PA was that the control unit could only read signals coming from the previous power supplies but not the additional second set. For this reason, the interface box was designed to facilitate the issue.

Horn Module Mounting: Kinematic Mount

This research will focus on the kinematic mount that is supporting the horn and horn module in the target hall, LBNF-20, at Fermilab. It will see if the current, ball-in-cup design will be the most optimal for the application as the horn module mount, and the main concerns that were considered were the ball diameter, cup angle, materials, and coating. There were many ways that information was gathered and analyzed such as: hand calculations, a spreadsheet calculator, and various graphs. The results will show if there is an exact cup angle, ball diameter, material, or coating that is the strongest candidate out of all the other options for all of these variables. In the future, a Finite Element Analysis on the cup will provide additional confirmation that the assumptions made in the hand-calculations are correct, and there will be a prototype built to determine if the design can take loads under real conditions.
