Aqua Factorem: Ultra Low Energy Lunar Water Extraction

We propose a new method we call Aqua Factorem to extract lunar water. It will drastically reduce energy and complexity of lunar mining operations helping to establish this industry. Other methods to extract water from the regolith are based on phase change, pumping energy into the regolith to sublimate the ice into vapor, then capturing the vapor, re-freezing it, and hauling the solid ice to a chemical processor where it is converted again into vapor for purification then electrolysis. This requires transporting high power into the permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) not only to vaporize the ice in situ in the soil but to heat the surrounding soil itself, which is wasted energy. Still other methods are based on strip mining and hauling the resource along with slag (the unwanted silicates, which constitutes about 95% of the mass), to a processing unit that is located outside the PSRs. That may be a simpler architecture but is generally not favored because hauling 49,000 t of regolith over many kilometers yearly to produce the projected demand of 2,450 t of propellant would be terribly difficult and expensive with high risk that the vehicles will get stuck driving with such loads across the unprepared regolith. We propose an alternative to both of these approaches, taking advantage of the processing that the unique lunar geology has already performed. Micrometeoroid bombardment has already broken most solid material in the upper part of the regolith into fine grains. This includes solid material of all compositions, including the ice, which is as hard as granite at PSR temperatures and is therefore essentially another type of rock. These ice grains are intermixed with all the other minerals, so a simple, ultra-low-energy grain-sorting process can extract the ice without phase change. As another benefit it can extract the 1 wt% free metal known to be in lunar soil, again with very little energy. The ice can then be hauled to the chemical processing unit in solid phase and converted into rocket propellant. We estimate the 800 kW power needed for thermal extraction can be reduced to less than 100 watts using the new method. This affects the entire architecture of the mining operation producing extensive economic benefit, which we will quantify in this study. We will study it in the context of a mission to mine propellants commercially for space tugs that boost commercial communication satellites from Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) to Geostationary Orbit (GEO) then return to the lunar surface for refueling. This simple architecture requires the minimum number of in-space elements, and notably does not require an in-space propellant depot, so it provides the lowest cost and lowest risk startup for a commercial operation. The study will also test the innovative Aqua Factorem process through laboratory experiments, and this will produce basic insights into the handling of lunar resources.

Comparative Assessment of Data-driven Process Models in Health Information Technology

Process mining for conformance analysis consists of comparing a reference process model against a data-driven process model generated via log files from information technology systems. However, in the absence of a complete reference process model, we found no suggested approaches in the literature to address the need for evaluating process conformance among different healthcare facilities to assess standardization of care. Our goal is to find similarities and dissimilarities in data-driven process models among US Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities that can be indicative of patient safety issues. Our hypothesis was that the analysis would not produce statistically significant differences in outcome. We present a unique implementation of conformance analysis in process mining that consists of combining process mining, process mapping and statistical metrics. We illustrate our approach by applying it to the analysis of two clinical radiology order process models generated from healthcare data provided by two similar facilities in the VHA. The comparative assessment showed that about 70% of the orders completed successfully and 30% were not completed due to policy and duplications. Our analysis found a good statistical correlation between both facilities, as the Spearman’s correlation coefficient between facilities for the frequency of cases per total hours was 0.87879, for the frequency of cases by state transition was 0.79702 and for the throughput time per state transition was 0.63582. Additional statistical analyses using the Mann-Whitney U test and the root mean square error both produced values that were not significant. The foregoing approach validated our hypothesis by demonstrating a good statistical correlation of data describing the flow of clinical radiology orders absent a credible reference model. Finding good agreement between both facilities was important in confirming that the clinical orders flow in a similar manner, suggesting standardization of care.

ISR Restoration Methods and Applicability to Groundwater Remediation at Abandoned Uranium Mills - 20342

There are numerous abandoned uranium mining and mill sites in the southwestern US. Surface remediation was undertaken in the 1980's and 90's to cover mill tailings and minimize infiltration of meteoric precipitation into the subsurface These actions have reduced the availability of tailings contaminants but many of these sites have persistent groundwater contamination, primarily due to the disposal of tailings and process fluids in unlined impoundments during the mill's operational life. Active in situ recovery (ISR) uranium mining and wellfield restoration practices are examined to determine the factors that contribute to the success of groundwater restoration. Hydrologic characteristics, geochemistry, ore body quality, regulatory requirements and the aboveground components of uranium production and water treatment are considered. While there is no such thing as a typical abandoned mill site, the potential use of ISR restoration methods is evaluated for viability as a remedial alternative to mine and mill sites that have residual contaminated groundwater plumes. An Integrated Economics Model for ISRU in Support of a Mars Colony - Initial Status Report

The aim of this effort is to develop an integrated set of risk-based financial and technical models to evaluate multiple Off-Earth Mining (OEM) scenarios. This quantitative, scenario- and simulation-based tool will help identify combinations of market variables, technical parameters, and policy levers that will enable the expansion of the global economy into the solar system and return economic benefits. Human ventures in space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises - in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station, and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, the Moon, and Mars. This investigation will examine the role of OEM in a growing space economy. (In this investigation, the term 'mining' is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water, and other in situ resources.) OEM can be the engine that drives the space economy, so it would be useful to understand what OEM market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements will be studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars Colony. Such a colony will need in situ resources not only for its own survival, but to prosper and grow, it must create viable business ventures, essentially by fulfilling the demand for in situ resources from and on Mars. This investigation will focus on understanding the role and economic prospect for OEM associated with the Human Colonization of Mars (HCM).

Design of an Excavation Robot: Regolith Advanced Surface Systems Operations Robot (RASSOR) 2.0

To continue on a sustainable and flexible path, NASA needs to address the challenge of collecting and moving large amounts of regolith at the destination. Acquiring the water resources on Mars will require mining significant quantities of regolith and this is not possible with the state-of-the-art low mass excavation systems. Low gravity environments (Mars = 3/8 G) and launch mass restrictions limit the traction and the resulting reaction force of the vehicle, making current terrestrial techniques impractical. This project addressed this challenge by developing a completely new technology that can mine large quantities of regolith on Mars. Recent measurements by the “Curiosity” rover on Mars have found that the regolith contains ~ 2% water by weight globally, ~4% in Jezero Crater (Human Architecture Team’s reference landing site), and much more at the poles(Leshin et al, 2013). RASSOR 2.0 is a planetary excavator, which has a mass of 66 kg, with a 0.38 kg vehicle mass per kilogram, per hour of excavation rate and power usage of 4 W per kg of regolith excavation rate. A single RASSOR 2.0 can excavate a minimum of 2.7 metric tons of regolith per day. This is accomplished by using counteracting excavation forces on two opposing digging implements called bucket drums and an autonomous mining control system. This work has addressed several major research areas outlined in the NASA Technology Area (TA) 04 Robotics & Autonomous Systems and TA 07 Human Destination Systems roadmaps. This project started at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 as a low fidelity “proof of concept” prototype which has successfully demonstrated basic regolith simulant excavation functionality in a lab-scale gravity off load test. The foundational technology described here was awarded US patent number: US 9027265 for a “Zero horizontal reaction force excavator” on May 12, 2015.

LDRD conclusion poster - Synthesizing Heterometallic Uranium Single Crystals to Understand the Influence of the Secondary Metals on Uranyl Axial Bond Strength

Understanding how transition metals influenced the chemistry of lanthanide and actinide (f-element) materials is critical for advancing separation technologies, materials design, and coordination chemistry. This project examined how incorporating first-row transition metals affected the structural and spectroscopic properties of f-element coordination polymers. In uranium(VI)-based systems synthesized with 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) ligands, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the presence of transition metals shortened the uranyl axial bond and induced a blue shift in its symmetric stretching vibration—evidence of increased bond strength. Electronic structure analysis, including Density of States (DOS) calculations using density functional theory (DFT), revealed altered orbital overlaps and highlighted the role of transition metal d-orbitals in modulating bonding. Raman modes were modeled using truncated structural fragments in collaboration with the University of Notre Dame, and although the predicted frequencies were lower than experimental values, they remained within expected ranges. In parallel, similar experiments with cerium (Ce) in the presence of cobalt (Co) and PDC demonstrated multi-step single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations—behavior not observed in the uranium systems. Initial products included light yellow, orange, and polycrystalline materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, conducted in collaboration with the Colorado School of Mines, identified the yellow phase as monometallic Ce(PDC)2(H2O)2·4H2O and the orange phase as heterometallic Ce2Co(PDC)4(H2O)6. After standing in solution for one week, both phases fully transformed into a dark yellow crystalline phase, [Ce3(PDC)5(H2O)8].6(H2O). Remarkably, this transformation was reversible—disturbing the equilibrium by removing some crystals caused reversion to the initial Ce(PDC)2(H2O)2·4H2O phase, highlighting dynamic behavior. All three structures were previously unreported. Solid-state UV-visible and Raman spectroscopy further distinguished these phases, revealing ligand-to-metal charge transfer involving Ce and characteristic d–d transitions from Co(II). The precise mechanism driving these transformations remained unclear; however, pH-dependent experiments confirmed that the transformation did not occur when the pH decreased. Overall, the project demonstrated that transition metals could be employed to tune bonding interactions, structural dimensionality, and optical properties in f-element materials, establishing new pathways for designing functional heterometallic systems. The work resulted in several novel structural discoveries and fostered productive collaborations with the University of Notre Dame and the Colorado School of Mines.

Best practices for predictions of radionuclide activity concentrations and total absorbed dose rates to freshwater organisms exposed to uranium mining/milling

Predictions of radionuclide dose rates to freshwater organisms can be used to evaluate the radiological environmental impacts of releases from uranium mining and milling projects. These predictions help inform decisions on the implementation of mitigation measures. The objective of this study was to identify how dose rate modelling could be improved to reduce uncertainty in predictions to non-human biota. For this purpose, we modelled the activity concentrations of 210 Pb, 210 Po, 226 Ra, 230 Th, and 238 U downstream of uranium mines and mills in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, together with associated weighted absorbed dose rates for a freshwater food chain using measured activity concentrations in water and sediments. Differences in predictions of radionuclide activity concentrations occurred mainly from the different default partition coefficient and concentration ratio values from one model to another and including all or only some 238 U decay daughters in the dose rate assessments. Consequently, we recommend a standardized best-practice approach to calculate weighted absorbed dose rates to freshwater biota whether a facility is at the planning, operating or decommissioned stage. At the initial planning stage, the best-practice approach recommend using conservative site-specific baseline activity concentrations in water, sediments and organisms and predict conservative incremental activity concentrations in these media by selecting concentration ratios based on species similarity and similar water quality conditions to reduce the uncertainty in dose rate calculations. At the operating and decommissioned stages, the best-practice approach recommends relying on measured activity concentrations in water, sediment, fish tissue and wholebody of small organisms to further reduce uncertainty in dose rate estimates. This approach would allow for more realistic but still conservative dose assessments when evaluating impacts from uranium mining projects and making decision on adequate controls of releases.

PDFDataExtractor: A Tool for Reading Scientific Text and Interpreting Metadata from the Typeset Literature in the Portable Document Format

The layout of portable document format (PDF) files is constant to any screen, and the metadata therein are latent, compared to mark-up languages such as HTML and XML. No semantic tags are usually provided, and a PDF file is not designed to be edited or its data interpreted by software. However, data held in PDF files need to be extracted in order to comply with opensource data requirements that are now government-regulated. In the chemical domain, related chemical and property data also need to be found, and their correlations need to be exploited to enable data science in areas such as data-driven materials discovery. Such relationships may be realized using text-mining software such as the “chemistry-aware” natural-language-processing tool, ChemDataExtractor; however, this tool has limited data-extraction capabilities from PDF files. This study presents the PDFDataExtractor tool, which can act as a plug-in to ChemDataExtractor. It outperforms other PDF-extraction tools for the chemical literature by coupling its functionalities to the chemical-named entityrecognition capabilities of ChemDataExtractor. The intrinsic PDF-reading abilities of ChemDataExtractor are much improved. The system features a template-based architecture. This enables semantic information to be extracted from the PDF files of scientific articles in order to reconstruct the logical structure of articles. While other existing PDF-extracting tools focus on quantity mining, this template-based system is more focused on quality mining on different layouts. PDFDataExtractor outputs information in JSON and plain text, including the metadata of a PDF file, such as paper title, authors, affiliation, email, abstract, keywords, journal, year, document object identifier (DOI), reference, and issue number. With a self-created evaluation article set, PDFDataExtractor achieved promising precision for all key assessed metadata areas of the document text.

PathTracer Comprehensively Identifies Hypoxia-Induced Dormancy Adaptations in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Mining large-scale data to discover biologically relevant information remains a challenge despite the rapid development of bioinformatics tools. Here, we have developed a new tool, PathTracer, to identify biologically relevant information flows by mining genome-wide protein–protein interaction networks following integration of gene expression data. PathTracer successfully mines interactions between genes and traces the most perturbed paths of perceived activities under the conditions of the study. Here, we further demonstrated the utility of this tool by identifying adaptation mechanisms of hypoxia-induced dormancy in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb).

A Knowledge Network-Based Approach to Facilitate Annotation of Clinical Pathway Component Clusters

Mining electronic health records (EHRs) to identify contextually related clinical concept clusters that tend to co-occur temporarily and consistently could improve data-driven clinical pathway (CP) construction. However, the automatic extraction of contextually related clinical concept clusters contains a vast amount of irrelevant information. Hence, this paper proposes a knowledge network-enabled literature-based discovery (LBD) approach to remove noise from clusters. The authors used published literature to filter spurious concepts from the clusters and used data from the US Department of Veterans Affairs’s major depressive disorder (MDD) cohort of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) for their experimentation. The approach was applied to 2,967 clusters extracted from the MDD OEF/OIF database. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can filter 94% of the irrelevant information. Moreover, the authors applied various network mining algorithms to analyze the clusters and demonstrated that LBD, along with network mining techniques, is a useful method for finding accurate contextually related clinical concept clusters. This could help domain researchers perform advanced analytics in CPs.

Scalable Knowledge Graph Analytics at 136 Petaflop/s

We are motivated by newly proposed methods for data mining large-scale corpora of scholarly publications, such as the full biomedical literature, which may consist of tens of millions of papers spanning decades of research. In this setting, analysts seek to discover how concepts relate to one another. They construct graph representations from annotated text databases and then formulate the relationship-mining problem as one of computing all-pairs shortest paths (APSP), which becomes a significant bottleneck. In this context, we present a new high-performance algorithm and implementation of the Floyd-Warshall algorithm for distributed-memory parallel computers accelerated by GPUs, which we call DSNAPSHOT (Distributed Accelerated Semiring All-Pairs Shortest Path). For our largest experiments, we ran DSNAPSHOT on a connected input graph with millions of vertices using 4, 096nodes (24,576GPUs) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Summit supercomputer system. We find DSNAPSHOT achieves a sustained performance of 136×1015 floating-point operations per second (136petaflop/s) at a parallel efficiency of 90% under weak scaling and, in absolute speed, 70% of the best possible performance given our computation (in the single-precision tropical semiring or “min-plus” algebra). Looking forward, we believe this novel capability will enable the mining of scholarly knowledge corpora when embedded and integrated into artificial intelligence-driven natural language processing workflows at scale.

Mechanical Properties of Functionally Graded Concrete Lining for Deep Underground Structures

With the mining depth of coal resources increasing, the thickness of traditional lining for deep mines becomes large. The bearing capacity of the outer lining cannot be fully utilized, so a new type of functionally graded lining structure (FGL) with radial Young’s modulus varying in gradient is proposed. In this study, through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the mechanical properties of the functionally graded lining were studied, including the characteristics of the elastic working state and the ultimate bearing state. The influences of the structural parameters of the functionally graded lining, including the inner radius, the thickness, Young’s modulus, the compressive strength of the concrete, Poisson’s ratio, and the number of layers on the mechanical properties were analyzed. The calculation formula of the ultimate bearing capacity of the lining and the calculation formula of the maximum tangential strain at the time of lining failure were put forward. The accuracy of the formula was verified by comparing with the numerical simulation results. The research results provide the basis for the construction of the design theory of a functionally graded lining structure and have great engineering significance for the construction of the kilometer-deep mines in the future.

Recent advances in the global rare-earth supply chain

The current global rare-earth element (REE) supply chain is highly imbalanced and tightly controlled by just a few countries. Such an imbalance of the critical metals supply chain poses a significant challenge to the energy-transition strategies and the national security of many countries. As such, this issue of MRS Bulletin delves into the materials science aspects of the REE supply chain, including fundamental REE mineralogy, REE separation and extraction, REE mining economics, the environmental impacts of REE mining and processing, and circular economy potential for REEs. This issue of MRS Bulletin is meant to inform the materials science community of some of the constraints on REE production from the mining of ore deposits, through processing technologies, and then finally, the possibility of recycling.

Finchite, Sr(UO 2 ) 2 (V 2 O 8 )·5H 2 O, a new uranyl sorovanadate with the francevillite anion topology

Finchite (IMA2017-052), Sr(UO 2 ) 2 (V 2 O 8 )·5H 2 O, is the first uranium mineral known to contain essential Sr. The new mineral occurs as yellow-green blades up to ~10 µm in length in surface outcrops of the calcrete-type uranium deposit at Sulfur Springs Draw, Martin County, Texas, U.S.A. Crystals of finchite were subsequently discovered underground in the Pandora mine, La Sal, San Juan County, Utah, U.S.A., as diamond-shaped golden-yellow crystals reaching up to 1 mm. In this work, the crystal structure of finchite from both localities was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and is orthorhombic, Pcan, with a = 10.363(6) Å, b = 8.498(5) Å, c = 16.250(9) Å, V = 1431.0(13) Å 3 , Z = 4 (R 1 = 0.0555) from Sulfur Springs Draw; and a = 10.3898(16), b = 8.5326(14), c = 16.3765(3) Å, V = 1451.8(4) Å 3 , Z = 4 (R 1 = 0.0600) from the Pandora mine. Electron-probe microanalysis provided the empirical formula (Sr 0.88 K 0.17 Ca 0.10 Mg 0.07 Al 0.03 Fe 0.02 ) Σ1.20 (UO 2 ) 2 (V 2.08 O 8 )·5H 2 O for crystals from Sulfur Springs Draw, and (Sr 0.50 Ca 0.28 Ba 0.22 K 0.05 ) Σ0.94 (U 0.99 O 2 ) 2 (V 2.01 O 8 )·5H 2 O for crystals from the Pandora mine, based on 17 O atoms per formula unit. The structure of finchite contains uranyl vanadate sheets based upon the francevillite topology. Finchite is a possible immobilization species for both uranium and the dangerous radionuclide 90 Sr because of the relative insolubility of uranyl vanadate minerals in water.

Cultivation and Use of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in Tellurium Biorecovery

The use of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Thiobacillus thiooxidans, and other chemoautotrophic microbes in bioleaching have been implemented in a variety of processes.1 In industry, bioleaching has been studied for its potential to extract valuable metals from low grade ores that would otherwise be cost prohibitive to recover.2 Other applications of bioleaching include the ability of certain microbes to detoxify waste products and even heavy metal contaminated soils.3 Another potential application for such bio-oxidative microbial activity is the extraction of tellurium (Te) from mine tailings, a low-cost abundant resource. Tellurium is one of the least common elements on Earth; it is found in the planetary crust at about 1 µg/kg, a rarity most comparable to that of platinum.4 A major use of Te in the U.S. is in cadmium-telluride (CdTe) solar panels5. Te is primarily imported into the U.S. from Canada, and it is usually recovered as a byproduct of copper refining.6 Since CdTe photovoltaic (PV) cells are the most efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly PV chemistry, the renewables market has seen an increased demand for CdTe PV cells causing some concerns about sustainability and the limited global availability of Te. Acidithiobacillus ferroxidans is a microorganism that can oxidize iron and sulfur to produce ferric iron and sulfuric acid, and it is possible that it could also solubilize Te from sulfidic mine tailings. In this project, different media for growth of A. ferroxidans were evaluated, and a plan for testing the ability of A. ferroxidans to leach Te from mine tailings was developed. Initial characterization of A. ferroxidans cultures grown in the presence of copper tailings suggests that conditions suitable for Te bioleaching can be established.

Middle Kittanning Coal Waste and Underclay as an Alternative Rare Earth Elements Feedstock

In order to secure domestic sources of rare earth elements (REE) from coal related materials, there must be validation of representative feedstocks. Actively producing coal mines that target the Middle Kittanning coal seam in the Appalachian Basin were compiled. These mines were cross-referenced with publicly available geochemical data such as the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Mapping Resources Initiative geochemical data along with samples evaluated and characterized by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). This work evaluated the extent of elevated Middle Kittanning underclay concentrations of REE in comparison to other underclay formations. Therefore, further up-scaling of research associated with the separation and extraction of REE and other critical minerals can be beneficial to utilizing domestic REE supplies for various technology sectors, to include energy, biomedical, and defense. Numerous current active mines targeting the Middle Kittanning coal seam represent a geographically significant opportunity for shared feedstocks and collaborations to further understand the role of Middle Kittanning underclay as a critical mineral feedstock.

An automated integrated web-based smart tool for open stope design

The Stability Graph is a widely used tool for the design of open stopes in underground mining. Many users of the Stability Graph still apply this design method manually. Although the manual approach has benefits, using multiple graphs and stability number computation charts for each stope surface is time-consuming, even for the experienced mining engineer. Current practice in the use of the method also limits data sharing. This paper presents a StopeSoft web-based tool for open stope stability prediction that is developed on the basis of the Stability Graph method and is available at openstope.com. StopeSoft incorporates flexibility in terms of Stability Graph options and incorporates additional critical factors often overlooked. As a web-based tool, StopeSoft encourages and makes data sharing possible globally, focused on expanding the database and improving the current limitations of the Stability Graph to provide practical, reliable solutions for mining engineers, consultants, and academics. The StopeSoft automated process facilitates the process of open stope stability prediction, saving time and minimizing potential human errors. Statistical treatment of the data accounts for the variability of input parameters to emphasize the probabilistic nature of the Stability Graph method. The probabilistic interpretation of the stability states of stope surfaces eliminates the false feeling of absolute stope performance based on its location on the Stability Graph , as implied by the deterministic approach.
