STARSITE Program: Search To Assess Re- sources, Social, Institutional, Technical, and Environmental, toward a decision-making mechanism

The systems approach was used in the seminar on the complex multidisciplinary problem of housing and related environment conditions. The main areas of study are the following; historical overview of housing; diagrammatic presentation of the problem; technological innovations and contributions; management, economic, legal, and political considerations; environment and natural resources; human needs and behavior; model of the housing industry; and potential for implementation. It is felt that a greater attempt should be made to transfer aerospace technology to the housing industry; however, the emphasis of the conference was directed to the modern management techniques developed by NASA. Among the conclusions are the following: The extent and character of the housing problem should be defined. Increased coordination of housing programs within and between Federal agencies is essential. Development of physically sophisticated building systems requires Federal support. New towns of differing life styles need to be created. Physiological and psychological reactions to environmental enclosure need to be defined.

Reefing system

A mechanical device for receiving a cable and controlling the motion of the cable is described. The cable moves freely in one direction and movement is resisted in the opposite direction until the forces exerted on the cable exceed a predetermined amount. Exceeding the minimum amount of force permits the cable to move in the opposite direction. Diagrams of the device are included.

Solar concentrator protective system

A mechanism that blocks concentrated sunlight from reaching a receiver, in the event of a tracking failure or loss of coolant is described. Sunlight is normally concentrated by a dish reflector onto the opening of a receiver. A faceplate surrounds the opening, and coolant carrying tubes, line the receiver. If the concentrated sunlight wanders so it begins to fall on the faceplate, then the sunlight will melt a portion of a fuse wire portion will break. The wire is attached to a flange on a shutter frame, and breaking of the fuse wire allows the frame to fall. Normally, the shutter frame supports shutter elements that are held open by cam followers that bear against cams.

Impact and collisional processes in the solar system

The mechanical and thermodynamic aspects of shock impact cratering and accretionary processes on solid planets and satellites are being investigated experimentally. The recently proposed model of Melosh, describing the physics controlling the size and velocity of only lightly shocked spalled ejecta surrounding the crushed rock region of an impact crater, was studied at the Ames gun facility. Spall velocity measurements using lead and aluminum bullets were conducted. In addition, shock temperatures of silicates and volatile-bearing minerals were measured using radiative techniques. Finally impact devolatilization of minerals and accretion of planetary atmospheres were examined. Measurements of the release isentropes of CaCO3 were carried out. The effect on the water budgets of planets of reactions which occur when metallic iron (which would be present in chondritic material) is introduced into a simple accretion model is under investigation.

Oceanic structures of the Earth and the North Depression of Mars: A comparison of the formation mechanisms

The system of contemporary oceans on Earth and the North Depression of Mars are quasi-symmetrical in reference to the centers of of the hemispheres. Both systems had been formed over the common megacycle of evolution of planets and their origin is likely to have similar features. The formation of the Earth's oceanic system within the South Hemisphere seems to have proceeded in three stages: (1) the formation of a network of passive rifts at the center of the Gondwana; (2) the formation of the system of active rifts at the zones of forthcoming spreading; and (3) the spreading of the oceanic crust. The formation of the Mar's North Depression seems to have proceeded in two stages: (1) a formation of a dense network of grabens and faults at the center of the North Hemisphere over the upper mantle zone characterized by an anomalous warm-up and a density decrease; and (2) a collapse of the ancient crust and it's overflowing by basalts. The first stage of the ocean formation on Earth and Mars is similar. But there seems to have been a thinner lithosphere on Mars. The dense areal rifting was immediately followed by a total collapse.

Mobilization of cryogenic ice in outer solar system satellites

Mechanisms to explain the mobilization of ice on the Uranian satellites Miranda and Ariel at the very low temperatures prevailing on those bodies are considered. A form of pressure solution creep is proposed in which very fine-grained water ice or clathrate hydrate is mobilized by a small amount of intergranular cryogenic fluid (CH4, CO, or N2). Viscosities as low as 10 to the 12th P are possible for a limited time, sufficient to allow flooding of rift valleys and perhaps even substantial lateral flows (glaciers).

Two-Phase Technology at NASA/Johnson Space Center

Since the baseline International Space Station (ISS) External Active Thermal Control System (EATCS) was changed from a two-phase mechanically pumped system to a single phase cascade system in the fall of 1993, two-phase EATCS research has continued at a low level at JSC. One of-the lessons of the ISS EATCS selection was that two-phase thermal control systems must have significantly lower power than comparable single phase systems to overcome their larger radiator area, larger line and fluid mass, and perceived higher technical risk. Therefore, research at JSC has concentrated on low power mechanically pumped two-phase EATCSs. In the presentation, the results of a study investigating the trade of single and two-phase mechanically pumped EATCSs for space vehicles will be summarized. The low power two-phase mechanically pumped EATCS system under development at JSC will be described in detail and the current design status of the subscale test unit will be reviewed. Also, performance predictions for a full size EATCS will be presented. In addition to the discussion of two-phase mechanically pumped EATCS development at JSC, two-phase technologies under development for biological water processing will be discussed. These biological water processor technologies are being prepared for a 2001 flight experiment and subsequent usage on the TransHab module on the International Space Station.

A control system formulation of the mechanism that controls the secretions of serum group hormone in humans during sleep

Plasma growth hormone concentrations during sleep were determined experimentally. An elevated level of plasma growth hormone was observed during the initial phase of sleep and remained elevated for approximately 3 hr before returning to the steady-state level. Moreover, subsequent to a prolonged interruption of sleep, of the order of 2-3 hr, an elevated level of plasma growth hormone was again observed during the initial phase of resumed sleep. A control system formulation of the mechanism that controls the secretions of serum growth hormone in humans was used to account for the growth hormone responses observed.

Novel Fault Location Method for Power Systems Based on Attention Mechanism and Double Structure GRU Neural Network

Fault location is one of the most essential techniques to maintain the stable operation of power systems. A fast and accurate fault location allows operators to restore power grids faster and avoid economic losses. Conventional methods rely on expert knowledge to extract the necessary features (e.g. DWT, DFT). For large systems, more coupling effects of transmission lines require more complex feature engineering, and incomplete features can easily introduce large errors. To overcome this, a deep learning approach without manual feature extraction is introduced to the fault location model under big data application. Towards this end, in the proposed method, the attention mechanism, the Bi-GRU and a dual structure network are applied to analyze the current data from different perspectives. Complete information for the fault features is extracted for the fault location. Based on a time series model and benefit from the ability to internally acquire the information architecture of faulty line, the established model is adaptive to the power grids with very complex topologies. Simulation results indicate that the proposed double-structure model reduces the maximum error and is less affected by noise. In comparison with different structures and different models, the proposed method shows better performance in IEEE 39-bus system.

Optical attenuation mechanism upgrades, MOBLAS, and TLRS systems

This poster presentation describes the Optical Attenuation Mechanism (OAM) Upgrades to the MOBLAS and TLRS Crustal Dynamics Satellite Laser Ranging (CDSLR) systems. The upgrades were for the purposes of preparing these systems to laser range to the TOPEX/POSEIDON spacecraft when it will be launched in the summer of 1992. The OAM permits the laser receiver to operate over the expected large signal dynamic range from TOPEX/POSEIDON and it reduces the number of pre- and post-calibrations for each satellite during multi-satellite tracking operations. It further simplifies the calibration bias corrections that had been made due to the pass-to-pass variation of the photomultiplier supply voltage and the transmit filter glass thickness. The upgrade incorporated improvements to the optical alignment capability of each CDSLR system through the addition of a CCD camera into the MOBLAS receive telescope and an alignment telescope onto the TLRS optical table. The OAM is stepper motor and microprocessor based; and the system can be controlled either manually by a control switch panel or computer controlled via an EIA RS-232C serial interface. The OAM has a neutral density (ND) range of 0.0 to 4.0 and the positioning is absolute referenced in steps of 0.1 ND. Both the fixed transmit filter and the daylight filter are solenoid actuated with digital inputs and outputs to and from the OAM microprocessor. During automated operation, the operator has the option to overide the remote control and control the OAM system via a local control switch panel.

Advanced Payload Transfer Measurement System (APT-MS) Mechanical Features

During the last two feet or so of transfer, for a large or heavy payload to its restraining fixture, the consequences of unplanned contact (or impact) between payload and support structure can range from merely annoying to something approaching disaster. Current transfer methods employ technicians with meter sticks stationed at the various hold-down locations to estimate the distances to contact. This information is communicated orally to the crane operator. It is understandable that this work proceeds carefully and therefore slowly. The objectives of this study are (1) to explore mechanical sources of measurement error; and (2) to develop an improved prototype design that is compact, inexpensive, and addresses the measurement error issues. APT is a relatively inexpensive electro-mechanical device that reduces both time and manpower required to make shuttle payload transfers. APT measurement system would provide a GUI for the 'move-conductor' (crane operator) so he could see the displacements of all hold-down interfaces as they move together and thus have a more accurate, comprehensive and 'real-time' picture of the engagement activity. An error model attempts to include all estimatable sources of mechanical error and design features were introduced to reduce or eliminate major sources of error.
