At sufficiently low frequencies, no ground-based radio array will be able to produce high resolution images while looking through the ionosphere.
The Deep Space Mission System (DSMS) Science Operations Concept describes the vision for enabling the use of the DSMS, particularly the Deep Space Network (DSN) for direct science observations in the areas of radio astronomy, planetary radar, radio science and VLBI.

The JPL/NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) plans to participate in the upcoming Space VLBI missions by using its 70m antenna time to co-observe with space-based radio telescopes. To enhance this support, the DSN is upgrading its radio astronomy equipment at L- and K-band, its VLBI recorders, and its computers and software for co-observing operations.
The cumulene carbenes are important components of hydrocarbon chemistry in low mass star forming cores. Here we report the first astronomical detection of the long chain cumulene carbene H(sub 2)C(sub 6), in the insterstellar cloud TMC1, from observations of two of its rotational transitions:...
Knowledge of the density, velocity and chemical profiles around protostars is of fundamental importance for testing dynamical models of protostar evolution and understanding the nature of the material falling onto circumstellar disks. Presented are single dish and interferometric spectral line observations of CCS towards the core of B335, a classic example of a young, low mass stellar object.
An array of satellites is proposed to make astronomic observations in the low frequency range of a few tens of MHz down to roughly 100 kHz, a range that cannot be observed through the ionosphere. The array would be in a solar orbit to avoid radio interference from Earth and to simplify trajectory tracking and control.

We have observed the 1_(10)-1_(01) (18.3 GHz) transition of orthocyclopropenylidene, C_(-3)H_(-2), at 24 positions in the unusual dense cloud G1.6- 0.025. Except for one position, the transition is refrigerated, a phenomenon which has not been seen in this transition before.
This paper presents new evidence of the fragmentary structure of dense cores in dark clouds using the high resolution spectra of the carbon chain molecule CCS transition (J subscript N = 2 subscript 1 - 1 subscript o) at 22.344033 GHz with 0.008 km s superscript -1 resolution.

During the latter half of the 1980's three concepts for low frequency arrays on the Moon were independently studied for NASA, leading to two workshops in 1990. The main technical challenges were those of deploying the array on the Moon, and of correlating the data on the Moon or returning all the raw data to Earth.
