Pulsed Sphere Time of Flight Neutron Spectrum Measurements: Blank Run and 1.8 Mean-Free-Path thick Polyethylene Moderating Sphere

From the late 1960s to 1985, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) undertook a series of ‘pulsed sphere’ experiments for 32 materials involving 148 different experiments using 75 different spheres to measure the neutron leakage spectra for different materials from 14-MeV neutrons generated by 3 H(d, n) 4 He reactions induced by an incident D+ beam from the Insulated Core Transformer (ICT) accelerator at LLNL. This deuteron beam was focused to impinge on tritium loaded onto a titanium substrate within a low mass target assembly placed within the center of a spherical shell constructed from the material of interest. The neutron time of flight was measured at a detector outside a collimator. The program was intended to be comprehensive with numerous targets of various thicknesses spanning the periodic table from H to 239 Pu. Five different neutron detectors were utilized to avoid possible systematic errors due to differences in detector responses. Further, these measurements were designed with the aim that the simple geometry of the measurements could be easily simulated to validate Monte Carlo transport codes and nuclear data libraries. As a result, these benchmarks have been extensively used in the validation of ENDL, ENDF and other libraries. Two experiments selected as benchmark cases in this evaluation are: 1) target assembly without material sphere (blank run), and 2) target assembly with a hollow polyethylene sphere, 1.8 mean free path (mfp) or 16.56 cm thick.

Updated Primers Generated for SCALE 6.2 for KENO V.a and KENO-VI [Slides]

Primers were developed and published for the use of the KENO V.a and KENO-VI codes in 2005 and 2008, respectively. These primers were both developed for SCALE 5 using the GeeWiz graphical user interface (GUI). Many new capabilities have been added to the transport codes since the release of these primers. The GUI was also changed to Fulcrum with the release of SCALE 6.2. For these reasons, updated versions of both primers were developed for a planned released in September 2020. The KENO V.a and KENO-VI codes are almost always run within the associated CSAS5 and CSAS6 sequences within SCALE, so the primers use the sequences and do not address running the codes in stand-alone mode.

Feasibility Study for a Proposed Subcritical Assembly at Oak Ridge National Laboratory [Slides]

To provide additional NCS training bandwidth, a simple feasibility study was performed for a proposed, inherently safe, subcritical assembly at ORNL for the US Department of Energy (DOE)/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) NCSP training and education (T&E) program. The NCSP performs subcritical, delayed critical and prompt supercritical experiments to support the NCSP T&E program. ORNL performed a study to examine the feasibility of a subcritical assembly with existing fuel that meets the ANSI/ANS-8.26 standard. Section 7.4 of the standard requires NCS staff to participate in hands-on experiments meant to “…demonstrate how varying the properties of a fissionable material system can affect neutron multiplication.” This training is performed to ensure NCS, and operations staff are aware of the risks involved with conducting operations with fissionable materials outside reactors.

Procedure for Creating, Reviewing, and Submitting Input Files into the Benchmark Library

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has a number of criticality benchmark input files, modeled for use with MCNP, developed and maintained by various organizations including the Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Division, XCP-3, and XCP-5. The purpose of this procedure is to standardize input file creation, review, and maintenance. This procedure incorporates existing practices used by IRSN as documented in the original report and the translation from French in addition to practices used by the LANL NCS Division as documented in. The report relates to input files used for the validation of the continuous energy Monte Carlo code MCNP6 but is general enough to be extended to other codes. This report describes the procedure on how to prepare and use benchmarks (taken mainly from the ICSBEP Handbook) for the validation of calculation routes. In particular, this report describes the procedure to follow in the creation of the input files and their integration in the experimental validation databases.

IER 498: Godiva-IV CAAS benchmark [Slides]

This presentation discusses the benchmark of the IER 498: Godiva-IV criticality accident alarm system (CAAS). It details the goal of the project which is to create a CAAS benchmark capability for Godiva-IV in order to create a shielding benchmark for NCSP software and data, to add geometrically diverse benchmark/benchmarks to the ICSBEP Handbook, to enable more precise measurements at NCERC, and to help assure CAAS performance is as-stated. It also states that work was completed on CED-1 in 2019 and that future work includes the completion of CED-2 in 2020.

Proposed Subcritical Assembly for Nuclear Criticality Safety Training at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory

The design of a new subcritical assembly at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been finalized. This design takes the feasibility study of the subcritical assembly performed in August 2020 to an implementable design. This subcritical assembly will support the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) training and education program. The addition of this subcritical assembly into the NCSP training and education will enhance the program by providing backup capacity for training if nuclear facility operations are disrupted at Sandia National Laboratories or the National Criticality Experiments Research Center; providing a new location that is more accessible to students in the Eastern portion of the United States; providing flexibility to support students from a diverse background (e.g., university students, foreign nationals). The proposed subcritical assembly uses legacy AGN-201M research reactor fuel plates that are available at the Y-12 National Security Complex. The final design of this subcritical assembly contains approximately 617 grams of 235 U as UO 2 powder distributed homogeneously in polyethylene. The fuel plates will have a graphite neutron reflector to obtain a core multiplication, M, from 10 to 20, corresponding to a $k_{eff}$ of 0.90 to 0.95, respectively. The subcritical assembly will be able to support at least four experiments for the training courses: (1) the addition of fissile material to the core (mass), (2) a core separation experiment (interaction), (3) the addition of moderators to the core (moderation), and (4) the addition of neutron absorbers to the core (poison/absorption). The subcritical assembly will be designed to be inherently safe—subcritical under all normal and abnormal conditions— and will provide the capability to conduct hands-on training to support NCSP and general nuclear criticality safety staff training and qualification goals.
