NASA patent abstracts bibliography: A continuing bibliography. Section 2: Indexes (supplement 09)

There are 200 patents and applications for patent introduced into the NASA scientific and technical information system during the period January 1976 through June 1976 presented. Each entry consists of a citation, an abstract, and, in most cases, a key illustration selected from the patent or application for patent. There are 2,994 patent and application for patent citations covering the period May 1969 through June 1976 listed. Subject, inventor, source, number, and accession number indexes are set forth.

Index for aerodynamic data from the Bumblebee program

The Bumblebee program, was designed to provide a supersonic guided missile. The aerodynamics program included a fundamental research effort in supersonic aerodynamics as well as a design task in developing both test vehicles and prototypes of tactical missiles. An index of aerodynamic missile data developed in this program is presented.

Remote sensing of environmental particulate pollutants - Optical methods for determinations of size distribution and complex refractive index

A unifying approach, based on a generalization of Pearson's differential equation of statistical theory, is proposed for both the representation of particulate size distribution and the interpretation of radiometric measurements in terms of this parameter. A single-parameter gamma-type distribution is introduced, and it is shown that inversion can only provide the dimensionless parameter, r/ab (where r = particle radius, a = effective radius, b = effective variance), at least when the distribution vanishes at both ends. The basic inversion problem in reconstructing the particle size distribution is analyzed, and the existing methods are reviewed (with emphasis on their capabilities) and classified. A two-step strategy is proposed for simultaneously determining the complex refractive index and reconstructing the size distribution of atmospheric particulates.

On the nature of the apparent response of vorticity area index to the solar magnetic field

The characteristics of tropospheric circulation that are involved in the apparent response of the vorticity area index (VIA) as the solar magnetic field is carried past the Earth by the solar wind are discussed. It is shown that the response is concentrated in the tropospheric regions of most intense circulation, i.e. the central portions of well-formed low pressure troughs. Factors that must be considered when assessing the Sun-weather effect in the years from 1947 to 1978 are included.

Management. A continuing bibliography with indexes

This bibliography cites 604 reports, articles, and other documents introduced into the NASA scientific and technical information system in 1979 covering the management of research and development, contracts, production, logistics, personnel, safety, reliability and quality control. Program, project, and systems management; management policy, philosophy, tools, and techniques; decision making processes for managers; technology assessment; management of urban problems; and information for managers on Federal resources, expenditures, financing, and budgeting are also covered. Abstracts are provided as well as subject, personal author, and corporate source indexes.

Empirical relationships between interplanetary conditions, magnetospheric flux transfer, and the AL index

Holzer and Slavin (1978) have found that the transfer of magnetic flux to and from the dayside magnetosphere as inferred from observed displacements of the magnetopause surface is correlated with both the magnitude of the auroral zone magnetic index AL and the incident flux of southward IMF. Empirical expressions specifying the rate at which magnetic flux is eroded in terms of interplanetary parameters and the rate of magnetic flux return as a function of AL have been developed. These relations are then used to predict magnetotail magnetic field enhancements from interplanetary and ground based data during an interval of substorm activity. The total magnetic flux in the tail is increased during intervals when the amount of flux transferred into its volume by dayside erosion exceeds the flux lost to the dayside by magnetospheric convection. Using Ogo-5 tail observations it is found for the sample events considered that these magnetic field enhancements can be described by empirical expressions for the magnetic flux transfer rates.

Sensitivity of the optimal preliminary design of a transport to operational constraints and performance index

Constrained parameter optimization was used to perform the optimal preliminary design of a medium range transport configuration. The impact of choosing a performance index was studied and the required fare for a 15 percent return-on-investment was proposed as a figure-of-merit. A number of design constants and constraint functions were systematically varied to document the sensitivities of the optimal design to a variety of economic and technological assumptions. Additionally, a comparison is made for each of the parameter variations between the baseline configuration and the optimally redesigned configuration.
