A Complexity Agnostic Clustering Engine for Time Projection Chambers and its Implementation in FPGA

A clustering functional block implemented in field-programable-gate-array (FPGA) for time projection chambers (TPC) operating with predictable time regardless the complexity of the event is described in this paper. The clustering functional block reorganizes input data and the hits data belonging to the same clusters are output together for further process in the later stages. The clustering operation consists of two phases, data filling phase and data outputting phase, and the later uses the same number of clock cycles as the data filling phase. The clustering block can accommodate events with arbitrary number of clusters and number of hits per cluster as long as the total number of hits is within a predesigned limit. The operation time is exactly twice of the data filling time with no residual O(n2) term. The clustering block has been implemented with operating frequency of 200 MHz in a low-cost FPGA evaluation module and test results confirm the expected performance.

Lessons learned from the development and implementation of a workforce training curriculum for advanced controls for high performance HVAC systems

Over the past decade, academic research on advanced controls has slowly transitioned into new software platforms, giving rise to various companies developing and deploying these innovative products, including solutions for light commercial HVAC systems. However, the current workforce remains widely unprepared to install, maintain and operate these systems, particularly complex software-based control platforms, as most workforce training programs still focus on traditional building automation for large commercial buildings. This paper presents the development and piloting of curriculum for three key types of professionals: ● Technicians (trade-level): installing and maintaining modern high-performance HVAC systems and controls ● Programmers (undergrad-level): developing and implementing advanced controls ● Engineers and energy professionals (undergrad/grad-level): managing and evaluating system performance We share details of the material developed including training videos, open-source software, instruction manuals. We also present the results of a pilot implementation of the training materials with real students.

Technology pathways for energy- and water-efficient controlled environment agriculture: A review of technologies, implementation pathways, and regional use cases

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) offers high-yield, climate-resilient food production, but high energy and resource demands challenge its sustainability. This paper synthesizes technologies that can improve outcomes across six categories—energy, CO 2 utilization, building envelope, hardware, water, and process—plus colocation strategies. We evaluate 80 technologies and define ten implementation pathways bundling complementary technologies to reduce energy use, optimize water consumption, and minimize emissions. Regional application is demonstrated through five U.S. case studies spanning different climates. A logic framework guides pathway selection for case studies based on climate, infrastructure, and regulatory context, informing context-sensitive technology deployment. Results show energy intensity reductions of 3–55 %, ranging from energy management programs to comprehensive lighting retrofits; water savings of 20–40 % through closed-loop recirculation; and emissions reductions of 3–100 %, with strategic energy management achieving 3–5 % and renewable electricity paired with electrified heating achieving up to 100 %. Text mining revealed that energy, hardware, and process technologies account for 91 % of literature coverage. Water, building envelope, and CO 2 utilization remain underexplored, indicating priorities for future research. This integrative approach to technology assessment supports growers, developers, and policymakers in aligning CEA system design with local conditions, improving resource efficiency and addressing gaps in cross-domain technology coverage.

Safety-Related Instrumentation and Control Pilot Upgrade (Initial Scoping Phase Implementation Report)

This research report (1) describes the process followed and products developed during the SR I&C Pilot Project Initial Scoping Phase, and (2) captures lessons learned. Exelon Generation and LWRS collaborated to develop a Digital Transformation Strategy as part of a larger Advanced Concept of Operations. The proposed SR I&C Pilot Upgrade provides a foundation stone for this Digital Transformation that will improve plant safety, reliability, and operational performance while lowering plant Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Initial Scoping Phase activities for this Pilot Project have been performed in accordance with industry processes that have been adapted to better support digital upgrades. These processes include IP-ENG-001, Standard Design Process (SDP), NISP-EN-04, Standard Digital Engineering Process (SDEP), and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Report 3002011816, Digital Engineering Guide (DEG). Completing Initial Scoping Phase Engineering and Operations, Licensing, and Project Management Activities was necessary to sufficiently bound the scope, schedule, and estimated cost of the Project to enable utility management to authorize moving into the Conceptual Design Phase. A significant finding of the Business Case Analysis (BCA) methodology developed and applied as part of this effort was that the growth rate of material costs for sustaining the operation of obsolete SR I&C equipment is accelerating. This directly contributed to the Project Economic Analysis created to justify continuing the Project. Project Initial Scoping Phase lessons learned have also been captured to assist the larger industry in understanding the Digital Transformation Strategy and SR I&C Pilot Project Initial Scoping Phase efforts. This is in keeping with the public/private partnership that has been established between the Department of Energy (DOE) and Exelon for this effort with engagement from the NRC. By addressing first-of-a-kind (FOAK) risks and capturing lessons learned, the SR I&C Pilot Upgrade Project addresses technical, regulatory, and business risks to enable subsequent implementers of similar upgrade.

Implementation of a Coded Modulation for Deep Space Optical Communications

We present a field programmable gate array code (FPGA) implementation of a turbo-like decoder for a serially concatenated pulse-position modulation (SCPPM) code. NASA a developed this coded modulation scheme for deep space communications from Mars. Under a nominal mission condition, the decoder complexity by iteratively decoding the modulation and SCPPM coded system can operate within a one dB signal energy gap from capacity. The structure of SCPPM makes direct application of the conventional turbo decoding algorithm very inefficient. Here, we describe techniques to increase the throughput and performance of a hardware SCPPM decoder. using our optimizations, we demonstrate a 6 mega-bits per second (Mbps) decoder realization on a single FPGA. Extension toa higher data rate decoder using multiple FPGAs is readily achievable. Similar codes designed for the optical channel can benefit from our optimization techniques.

The DIARieS Ecosystem – A Software Ecosystem to Simplify Discovery, Implementation, Analysis, Reproducibility, and Sharing of Scientific Results and Environments in Heliophysics

The infrastructure of the Heliophysics discipline has promising components but with several missing gaps, drastically reducing research and development efficiency. Developing an online discovery and analysis software ecosystem will close several of these gaps. The five main focuses on this ecosystem should be Discovery, Implementation, Analysis, Reproducibility, and Sharing of results (DIARieS). In this paper, we give a detailed description of how the proposed software ecosystem should operate, and point out the large range of possible applications to benefit many disparate groups, such as researchers, operational staff, decision-makers, and educators. The infrastructure components and technological capabilities necessary for its completion are either currently available or in development, making such an ecosystem possible for the first time. One main focus of current infrastructure investments must be to adapt and connect these pieces together into a cohesive whole to increase our research and development efficiency.

The German Site Selection Process - Implementation and Challenges - 20528

Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft fuer Endlagerung mbH; hereinafter referred to as BGE) is a state-owned company established in September 2016 following the 'Act on the Organisational Restructuring in the Field of Radioactive Waste Storage'. 'Repository Site Selection Act' (hereinafter referred to as StandAG) defines the site selection procedure, aiming to ensure the best possible safety for storing high-level radioactive waste in Germany for the duration of one million years. The selection procedure is a participatory, transparent, learning and self-questioning process based on scientific expertise. Possible repository sites are sought all over Germany, without excluding or predetermining any potential site at the beginning. The procedure consists of three phases. After each phase, the legislative decides on the regions for further consideration in the next phase of the site selection procedure. The current first phase (Phase I) is divided into two steps. Objective of Step 1 is to determine subareas of favorable geological conditions based on available data. Step 2 of Phase I will lead to identification of specific regions that are considered for further surface-based geoscientific and geophysical exploration. Potential host rocks are rock salt, clay rock and crystalline rock. As part of the site selection procedure, an overview of the status of the planning and implementation of R and D activities is given. Topics of particular interest are, for example, the adaptation of the maximum temperature of 100 deg. C at the container surface, the impact of long-term climate variations as well as minimally invasive exploration methods. (authors)

Smart connected worker edge platform for smart manufacturing: Part 2—Implementation and on‐site deployment case study

Abstract In this paper, we describe specific deployments of the Smart Connected Worker (SCW) Edge Platform for Smart Manufacturing through implementation of four instructive real‐world use cases that illustrate the role of people in a Smart Manufacturing paradigm through which affordable, scalable, accessible, and portable (ASAP) information technology (IT) acquires and contextualizes data into information for transmission to operation technologies (OT). For case one, the platform captures the relationships between energy consumption and human workflows for improved energy productivity while workers interact with machines during semiconductor manufacturing. The platform utilizes human cognition to identify anomalous machine behavior for root cause analysis of system faults via neural network (NN) that recognize alarm postures of workers with cameras. For case two, a smart assembly line is demonstrated for state monitoring and fault detection. Machine learning (ML) models are used to recognize system states and identify fault scenarios with human intervention. For case three, the platform monitors human–machine interactions to classify manufacturing machine states for proper operations and energy productivity. Internal energy states of individual or collections of manufacturing equipment are determined via NN based algorithms that disaggregate signals associated with smart metering typically deployed at manufacturing facilities. These methods predict the real time energy profile of each machine from the total energy profile of a manufacturing site. For case four, a software defined sensor system built with scientific workflow engines is demonstrated for contextualizing data from laser surface refraction for characterization, and diagnostics in the processing of additively manufactured titanium alloy.

Runtime power allocation approach for GAMESS hybrid CPU‐GPU implementation

Summary To improve power consumption of applications at the runtime, modern processors provide frequency scaling capabilities, which along with workload optimization, are also available on GPU accelerators. In this work, a runtime strategy is proposed to distribute a given power allocation among the host components and the GPU according to the current application performance and power usage, such that GPU execution is prioritized over CPU for power allocation to maximize application performance. Next, the strategy is tailored to an application, a quantum‐chemistry package GAMESS for ab initio electronic structure calculations. Specifically, GAMESS hybrid CPU–GPU implementation as provided in the Libcchem library is considered. Experiments, performed on a 28‐core node with a Kepler GPU, resulted in performance gains of up to 50% under the proposed strategy and the largest power allocation considered here as compared with the scenario when this allocation was equally distributed among the computing‐platform components.

Implementation of AI/DEEP learning disruption predictor into a plasma control system

Abstract This paper reports on advances in the state‐of‐the‐art deep learning disruption prediction models based on the Fusion Recurrent Neural Network (FRNN) originally introduced in a 2019 NATURE publication [ https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586‐019‐1116‐4 ]. In particular, the predictor now features not only the “disruption score,” as an indicator of the probability of an imminent disruption, but also a “sensitivity score” in real time to indicate the underlying reasons for the imminent disruption. This adds valuable physics interpretability for the deep learning model and can provide helpful guidance for control actuators now implemented into a modern plasma control system (PCS). The advance is a significant step forward in moving from modern deep learning disruption prediction to real‐time control and brings novel AI‐enabled capabilities relevant for application to the future burning plasma ITER system. Our analyses use large amounts of data from JET and DIII‐D vetted in the earlier NATURE publication. In addition to “when” a shot is predicted to disrupt, this paper addresses reasons “why” by carrying out sensitivity studies. FRNN is accordingly extended to use more channels of information, including measured DIII‐D signals such as (i) the “n1rms” signal that is correlated with the n = 1 modes with finite frequency, including neoclassical tearing mode and sawtooth dynamics; (ii) the bolometer data indicative of plasma impurity control; and (iii) “q‐min”—the minimum value of the safety factor relevant to the key physics of kink modes. The additional channels and interpretability features expand the ability of the deep learning FRNN software to provide information about disruption subcategories as well as more precise and direct guidance for the actuators in a PCS.

An interoperable implementation of collective‐variable based enhanced sampling methods in extended phase space within the OpenMM package

Collective variable (CV)-based enhanced sampling techniques are widely used today for accelerating barrier-crossing events in molecular simulations. A class of these methods, which includes temperature accelerated molecular dynamics (TAMD)/driven-adiabatic free energy dynamics (d-AFED), unified free energy dynamics (UFED), and temperature accelerated sliced sampling (TASS), uses an extended variable formalism to achieve quick exploration of conformational space. These techniques are powerful, as they enhance the sampling of a large number of CVs simultaneously compared to other techniques. Extended variables are kept at a much higher temperature than the physical temperature by ensuring adiabatic separation between the extended and physical subsystems and employing rigorous thermostatting. Here, in this work, we present a computational platform to perform extended phase space enhanced sampling simulations using the open-source molecular dynamics engine OpenMM. The implementation allows users to have interoperability of sampling techniques, as well as employ state-of-the-art thermostats and multiple time-stepping. This work also presents protocols for determining the critical parameters and procedures for reconstructing high-dimensional free energy surfaces. As a demonstration, we present simulation results on the high dimensional conformational landscapes of the alanine tripeptide in vacuo, tetra-N-methylglycine (tetra-sarcosine) peptoid in implicit solvent, and the Trp-cage mini protein in explicit water.
