Applicability of the ARCON96 Code to the Radiological Consequence Analysis of Releases from the Radioassay and Non-Destructive Testing (RANT) Facility

Establish technical justification to demonstrate that the horizontal diffusion parameter (σy) and vertical diffusion parameter (σz) that are embedded in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Atmospheric Relative CONcentrations (ARCON96) code are representative of the meteorological conditions at LANL. Compare the ARCON96 atmospheric diffusion factor ( X /Q) to the MACCS2-calculated X /Q for the determination of radiological consequences of ground releases from the Radioassay and Non-Destructive Testing (RANT) facility on the key receptors, the colocated worker (CW) and Maximally-Effected Offsite Individual (MEOI).

Demonstration of a new unstructured mesh IMC x-ray transport capability in LAP codes

The Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Transport project’s Jayenne Implicit Monte Carlo (IMC) transport library now includes an unstructured mesh capability and is available in a Lagrangian Applications Project (LAP) code. In this presentation, we discuss recent work by the LAP and Transport projects that provides an IMC transport capability for radiation hydrodynamics in the Lagrangian frame. Verification problems testing the new capabilities have been simulated and analyzed, i.e. Marshak wave, Mach 45, Su-Olsen, picket fence, and crooked pipe, both in one and two dimensions. We also present results on two stretch goal problems: a simplified COAX high energy density physics experiment and a supernova shock simulation. Finally, we identify current limitations and future work needed to bring a full capability to the user community.

Technical Qualification of New Materials for High Efficiency Coal-Fired Boilers and Other Advanced FE Concepts: Haynes® 282® ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Case

This DOE Fossil Energy project, FEAA117, addressed materials issues relevant to qualifying and deploying a Ni-base alloy for a new application in an advanced ultra-supercritical coal-fired boiler. The goal was the deployment of Haynes International alloy Haynes® 282® for applications in superheaters, reheaters, and steam delivery pipes, by completing base metal, cross-weld and all-weld metal mechanical testing needed for an ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Case and the associated microstructural analyses needed for assurance of boiler-relevant lifetimes. The alloy also is of interest for other applications including supercritical CO₂ power generation cycles. Tensile testing was completed from 20°-927°C on the three base metal alloy 282 heats, two sets of cross-weld specimens and all weld metal specimens. A total of 148 creep tests with over 565,000 h of cumulative testing was completed on base metal, cross-weld and all weld metal specimens. This project was performed with cost share from Haynes International.

PDQ Users Manual Version 1 for PDQ Code Version 1.12

PDQ is a tool for the management of the input and execution of batch jobs for simulation codes that use a text based input system. It accomplishes this goal by operating at two levels. First, it takes input file templates (commonly known at LANL as input deck templates) and creates multiple instantiations by performing substitutions of data from table files into symbols (variables) found in the template. Second, it provides commands to submit the created files to the SLURM batch system for execution. These two activities taken together produce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts and provides an elegant way of executing studies across multiple similar simulations while minimizing the risk of typographical errors in the input files.

Using the CAP88 Plume Model & Dose Assessment Code for the FTWC Project

The Environmental Protection & Compliance Division (EPC) uses the Clean Air Act Assessment Package – 1988 (CAP88) plume model and dose assessment code to evaluate measured emissions or projected emissions of airborne radionuclides from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) facilities. This software package will use facility data (e.g., stack height and exit velocity), emissions parameters (chemical form and quantity), and environmental data (wind speed and direction) to predict downwind concentrations of radioactive material and subsequent dose to a member of the public at that location. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved CAP88 for use in demonstrating compliance with the Radionuclide NESHAP2, that portion of the Clean Air Act addressing emissions of airborne radioactive material from Department of Energy facilities. EPC Division has two procedures which discuss the use of CAP88.

Development of the finite slab geometry in the NORA code

In this work we develop the complete linearization formalism for the radiation transfer equation in slab geometry. This development was motivated by an observed convergence instability arising from the NORA code’s inner boundary while modeling a suite of simple test problems in slab geometry presented at the Line Transfer Workshop held in LLNL in May of 2019. The convergence issue was seen to emerge early on in Newton-Raphson iterations. These test problems required parameters in the former NORA inner boundary to achieve the asymptotic limit of zero incoming intensity. In this work we derive the limiting case directly to gain insight into the former algorithm’s pathology.

Verification and Validation of High Explosive Reactive Burn Models Implemented in LANL's EAP and LAP Code Base (FY2020 L2 Milestone MRT 7129) [Slides]

Advanced reactive burn models enable phenomena to be modeled that aren’t possible with programmed burn. Programmed burn propagates a burn front at a prescribed speed from a prescribed initiation point. Reactive burn uses the hydro variables (pressure, temperature, etc.) to determine when, how rapidly, and to what extent a zone detonates. This enables a completely new set of problems to be simulated. Our goal in this milestone has been to improve the usability of reactive burn modes. Thus, the closure criteria are: 1. Perform code and solution verification of the reactive burn models using appropriate solutions and simplified HE setups. 2. Perform validation assessments using small-scale experiments. 3. Evaluate sensitivities and quantify uncertainties due to model form variations and mesh dependencies.

Improvements to the New CTH Code Verification & Validation Test Suite (FY2020)

The CTH multiphysics hydrocode, which is used for a wide range of important calculations, has undertaken in recent years to overhaul its software quality and testing processes. A key part of this effort entailed building a new, robust V&V test suite made up of traditional hydrocode verification problems, such as those listed in the ASC Tri-Lab Test Suite and the Enhanced Tri-Lab Test Suite, as well as validation problems for some of CTHs most frequently used equations of state, materials models, and other key capabilities. Substantial progress towards this goal was made in FY19. In FY20, this test suite has been expanded to include verification and validation tests of the Sesame and JWL equation of state models as well as the Mader verification problem from the Tri-Lab Test Suite and the Blake verification problem - a linear elastic analog to the Hunter problem from the Enhanced Tri-Lab Test Suite. This report documents CTH performance on the new test suite problems. Verification test results are compared to analytic solutions and, for most tests, convergence results are presented. Validation test results are compared to experimental data and mesh refinement studies are included. CTH performs well overall on the new test problems. Convergence rates for the Blake and Mader problems are comparable to those for similar ASC codes. The JWL and Sesame verification tests show good agreement with analytic solutions. Likewise, CTH simulation results show good agreement with experimental validation data for the Sesame and JWL equations of state for the materials tested. Future V&V work will focus on adding tests for other key capabilities like fracture and high explosive models.

FY21 Status Report on Creep Rupture Testing at ANL to Support the Development of Alloy 709 Code Case

This report provides an update on the status of the creep rupture testing on the first commercial heat of Alloy 709 in support of the Alloy 709 Code Case development. Creep tests were performed in air on the lever-arm load frames in the Mechanical and Environmental Testing Laboratory at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). In FY21, the focus was on the age-hardened ESR-1150°C material. Twenty two tests were initiated, among which ten were completed. This report presents the data from the completed tests. Metallographic characterization of the fractured specimens were performed and the results are included. The creep data enabled the preliminary analysis of the creep behavior of this material. The characterization showed the effect of test temperature and stress on the deformation microstructure.

Multigroup Scattering in Monte Carlo Radiation Transport Codes [Slides]

Legendre truncations to multigroup scattering distributions are not amenable to Monte Carlo sampling due to negative values. We have implemented two moment-preserving methods in MGMC that capture the shape of the truncation, are non-negative over [-1, 1], and can be efficiently sampled on CPUs and GPUs. MGMC can now simulate neutrons with anisotropic scattering mechanics and MGMC shows good agreement with LANL production codes PARTISN.

Stochastic Modeling in a Multimaterial Continuum Mixture Shock Physics Code

Stochastic modelling approaches are presented to capture random effects at multiple time and length scales. Random processes that occur at the microscale produce nondeterministic effects at the macroscale. Here we present three stochastic modeling approaches that describe random processes at microscopic length scales and map these processes to the macroscopic length scale. The first stochastic modeling approach is based upon a particle based numerical technique to solve a Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) using an arbitrary diffusion process to capture random processes at the microstructural level. The second approach prescribes a Probability Density Function (PDF) for the drift and diffusion of the random variable derived using the forward and backward Kolmogorov equations. This method requires mean and drift evolution PDF transport equations. The third approach is the coupling of multiple random variables which are dependent on each other. The relationship of the PDFs and a coupling function, known as a copula, produces a Joint Probability Density Function (JPDF). These stochastic modeling approaches are implemented into a Multiple Component (MC) shock physics computational code and used to model statistical fracture and reactive flow applications.

Load Following Analysis of the Holos-Quad 10MWe Micro-Reactor with Plant Dynamics Code

This report presents the load following analysis of the “Holos-Quad” 10MWe micro-reactor design developed by HolosGen LLC. This analysis is focused on the Holos-Quad micro-reactor ability to match the changing grid demand at 10%/min rate. The control mechanisms for the plant are identified, simulated, and compared. Based on the comparison results, control strategy for load following of the Holos-Quad micro-reactor is developed. The control strategy and load following capabilities are demonstrated in a full-range down-and-up reactor power transient from 100% to 0% and back to 100% load at 10%/min rate. All calculations are carried out with Argonne’s Plant Dynamics Code.
