Measurement of side forces of a H-force rotor

Study of the use of tip vanes has been underway to investigate both the impact of the vanes on hover performance and on their potential use as force generators. It is the aim of this paper to report on progress made to determine the forces that can be generated. Model tests were run using a 6-ft-diameter rotor with tip vanes pivoted below the blade tips. Data were taken on the thrust, torque, and side force. The results obtained were in substantial agreement with the side force predicted by using a simple wing model.

Bladed disk assemblies; Proceedings of the Eleventh Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, Boston, MA, Sept. 27-30, 1987

The present conference on bladed disk assemblies discusses aerodynamic indicial reponse and stability derivatives for a rotor annulus, an analysis of aerodynamically forced turbomachine vibration, the effect of downwash on the nonsteady forces in a turbomachine stage, the vibration of turbomachine blades with root flexibility effects, mistuned bladed disk assembly vibrations, and the model-generation and modal analysis of flexible bladed disk assemblies. Also discussed are the vibration characteristics of a mistuned bladed disk, free and forced vibrations associated with localization phenomena in mistuned assemblies with cyclic symmetry, steam turbine cyclic symmetry through constraint equations, and the interpretation of experimental and theoretical results predicting vibrating turbocharger blade mode shapes.

Solution of structural analysis problems on a parallel computer

The problems of a blade-stiffened panel with a hole subjected to compression, and a deployable space mast subjected to tip loads, are treated through the application of FEM to model generation followed by the solution of a linear system of equations. Direct and iterative approaches to the solution of the linear systems are solved in turn; for the panel problems using varying numbers of processors, the incomplete Cholesky-conjugate gradient method was the fastest iterative method on all but two instances in which the number of processors was large.

Automatic mathematical modeling for real time simulation program (AI application)

A methodology is described for automatic mathematical modeling and generating simulation models. The major objective was to create a user friendly environment for engineers to design, maintain, and verify their models; to automatically convert the mathematical models into conventional code for computation; and finally, to document the model automatically.

A correction algorithm for particle size distribution measurements made with the forward-scattering spectrometer probe

A correction algorithm for evaluating the particle size distribution measurements of atmospheric aerosols obtained with a forward-scattering spectrometer probe (FSSP) is examined. A model based on Poisson statistics is employed to calculate the average diameter and rms width of the particle size distribution. The dead time and coincidence errors in the measured number density are estimated. The model generated data are compared with a Monte Carlo simulation of the FSSP operation. It is observed that the correlation between the actual and measured size distribution is nonlinear. It is noted that the algorithm permits more accurate calculation of the average diameter and rms width of the distribution compared to uncorrected measured quantities.

Selecting a model of the neutral atmosphere

The characteristics and applicability of some of the more frequently used atmospheric models covering the thermosphere are discussed from the point of view of selecting the most appropriate model for an engineering or scientific problem. Models based on satellite atmospheric drag are the earliest examples of global models and are still widely used for engineering studies. Later models based on satellite instrumentation and ground based measurements were originally aimed at scientific studies of the atmosphere, but their absolute accuracies for total densities are now similar to those of drag based models while providing better thermospheric temperature, composition, and winds. Theoretical models are now approaching the accuracy of climatological empirical models and may surpass them in the near future. Each new model generation, however, is more complicated and costly to run on a computer.

Atomization modeling in a multiphase flow environment and comparison with experiments

An atomization model based on Reitz's instability wave analysis has been implemented into the ARICC3D multiphase CFD combustion code. Preliminary test runs with cold non-evaporating liquid jet and coaxial gas-liquid atomization cases appeared to have verified basic performance of the model, generating realistic-looking sprays. Furthermore, the extended liquid jet is explicitly resolved, and predicted jet lengths agree well with classical correlations. Fair agreement with test data is obtained for predicted spray tip penetrations and liquid mass flux radial distributions, with obvious room for improvement. Some numerical problems also appear to have resulted with the current implementation when low gas Mach number and high liquid velocities are involved.

Component-specific modeling

Accomplishments are described for a 3 year program to develop methodology for component-specific modeling of aircraft hot section components (turbine blades, turbine vanes, and burner liners). These accomplishments include: (1) engine thermodynamic and mission models, (2) geometry model generators, (3) remeshing, (4) specialty three-dimensional inelastic structural analysis, (5) computationally efficient solvers, (6) adaptive solution strategies, (7) engine performance parameters/component response variables decomposition and synthesis, (8) integrated software architecture and development, and (9) validation cases for software developed.

Hydrocarbons in Neptune's stratosphere from Voyager infrared observations

The ethane and acetylene emissions observed in the Voyager IR spectra of Neptune are analyzed. The mean hydrocarbon abundances are derived from a comparison of the disk-averaged spectral selection with synthetic spectra, using updated temperature information from the Voyager 2 radio occultation data and constraints from the ground-based stellar occultation measurements. The observations are used to test photochemical models generated for various eddy mixing profiles and stratospheric methane mole fractions. Finally, the altitudinal variability of the acetylene emission strength was investigated from a large set of IRIS spectra, and the derived variation is compared with that observed at lower wavenumbers (250 and 350 per cm) where the troposphere and the lower stratosphere are probed.

Development of a four-dimensional variational analysis system using the adjoint method at GLA. I - Dynamics

Recent developments in the field of data assimilation have pointed to variational analysis (essentially least-squares fitting of a model solution to observed data) using the adjoint method as a new direction that holds the potential of major improvements over the current optimal interpolation method. This paper describes the initial effort in the development of a 4D variational analysis system. Although the development is based on the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres General Circulation Model (GCM), the methods and procedures described in this paper can be applied to any model. The adjoint code that computes the gradients needed in the analysis can be written directly from the GCM code. An easy error-detection technique was devised in the construction of the adjoint model. Also, a method of determining the weights and the preconditioning scales for the cases where model-generated data, which are error free, are used as observation is proposed. Two test experiments show that the dynamics part of the system has been successfully completed.

Model reduction of mechanical systems

A reduced model of a stable mechanical system with proportional damping represented in modal coordinates is developed, based on a procedure reported by Commault and Guerin (1978). In this model, model error is calculated a priori and is used to determine the dominant modes. Two examples are presented showing that reduced models generated as described will be better or at least as good as those produced by the popular modal cost analysis scheme of Skelton and Hughes (1980).

Retrieval of wind temperature and pressure from single Doppler radar and a numerical model

A 4D data assimilation algorithm to obtain 3D wind and thermodynamic fields from radial velocities and a numerical model is derived. It is a blend of the continuous updating technique of Charney et al. (1969) and a diagnostic pressure and temperature retrieval technique suggested by Gal-Chen (1978). This model is tested only against model-generated data which are viewed as 'data observed from a real atmosphere'. A thermal bubble developing in a dry, neutral environment is simulated. The thermal recovery technique is found to be a necessary procedure to obtain successful data assimilation results. The present assimilation method is found to be capable of reducing the 'observational error' and making the assimilation run converge toward the control run. Without data insertion, errors in the nonobserved wind component are large.

Large-eddy simulation of a plane wake

Previously the theoretical development leading to the dynamic localization model (DLM) for large-eddy simulation (LES) was presented. The method has been successfully applied to isotropic turbulence, channel flow, and the flow over a backward-facing step. Here we apply the model to the computation of the temporally developing place wake. The two main objectives of this project are: (1) Use the model to perform an LES of a time developing plane wake and compare the results with direction numerical simulation (DNS) data to see if important statistical measures can be readily predicted, and to provide a relative evaluation of the several versions of the model in terms of predictive capability and cost; and (2) If the tests in (1) show that the model generates reliable predictions, then use the LES to study various aspects of the physics of turbulent wakes and mixing layers.

ISPAN (Interactive Stiffened Panel Analysis): A tool for quick concept evaluation and design trade studies

Interactive Stiffened Panel Analysis (ISPAN) modules, written in FORTRAN, were developed to provide an easy to use tool for creating finite element models of composite material stiffened panels. The modules allow the user to interactively construct, solve and post-process finite element models of four general types of structural panel configurations using only the panel dimensions and properties as input data. Linear, buckling and post-buckling solution capability is provided. This interactive input allows rapid model generation and solution by non finite element users. The results of a parametric study of a blade stiffened panel are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the ISPAN modules. Also, a non-linear analysis of a test panel was conducted and the results compared to measured data and previous correlation analysis.

Strong gravitational lensing statistics as a test of cosmogonic scenarios

Gravitational lensing statistics can provide a direct and powerful test of cosmic structure formation theories. Since lensing tests, directly, the magnitude of the nonlinear mass density fluctuations on lines of sight to distant objects, no issues of 'bias' (of mass fluctuations with respect to galaxy density fluctuations) exist here, although lensing observations provide their own ambiguities of interpretation. We develop numerical techniques for generating model density distributions with the very large spatial dynamic range required by lensing considerations and for identifying regions of the simulations capable of multiple image lensing in a conservative and computationally efficient way that should be accurate for splittings significantly larger than 3 seconds. Applying these techniques to existing standard Cold dark matter (CDM) (Omega = 1) and Primeval Baryon Isocurvature (PBI) (Omega = 0.2) simulations (normalized to the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE) amplitude), we find that the CDM model predicts large splitting (greater than 8 seconds) lensing events roughly an order-of-magnitude more frequently than the PBI model. Under the reasonable but idealized assumption that lensing structrues can be modeled as singular isothermal spheres (SIS), the predictions can be directly compared to observations of lensing events in quasar samples. Several large splitting (Delta Theta is greater than 8 seconds) cases are predicted in the standard CDM model (the exact number being dependent on the treatment of amplification bias), whereas none is observed. In a formal sense, the comparison excludes the CDM model at high confidence (essentially for the same reason that CDM predicts excessive small-scale cosmic velocity dispersions.) A very rough assessment of low-density but flat CDM model (Omega = 0.3, Lambda/3H(sup 2 sub 0) = 0.7) indicates a far lower and probably acceptable level of lensing. The PBI model is consistent with, but not strongly tested by, the available lensing data, and other open models would presumably do as well as PBI. These preliminary conclusions and the assumptions on which they are based can be tested and the analysis can be applied to other cosmogonic models by straightforward extension of the work presented here.

Decadal variability of the Tropical Atlantic Ocean Surface Temperature in shipboard measurements and in a Global Ocean-Atmosphere model

Sea surface temperature (SST) variability was investigated in a 200-yr integration of a global model of the coupled oceanic and atmospheric general circulations developed at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL). The second 100 yr of SST in the coupled model's tropical Atlantic region were analyzed with a variety of techniques. Analyses of SST time series, averaged over approximately the same subregions as the Global Ocean Surface Temperature Atlas (GOSTA) time series, showed that the GFDL SST anomalies also undergo pronounced quasi-oscillatory decadal and multidecadal variability but at somewhat shorter timescales than the GOSTA SST anomalies. Further analyses of the horizontal structures of the decadal timescale variability in the GFDL coupled model showed the existence of two types of variability in general agreement with results of the GOSTA SST time series analyses. One type, characterized by timescales between 8 and 11 yr, has high spatial coherence within each hemisphere but not between the two hemispheres of the tropical Atlantic. A second type, characterized by timescales between 12 and 20 yr, has high spatial coherence between the two hemispheres. The second type of variability is considerably weaker than the first. As in the GOSTA time series, the multidecadal variability in the GFDL SST time series has approximately opposite phases between the tropical North and South Atlantic Oceans. Empirical orthogonal function analyses of the tropical Atlantic SST anomalies revealed a north-south bipolar pattern as the dominant pattern of decadal variability. It is suggested that the bipolar pattern can be interpreted as decadal variability of the interhemispheric gradient of SST anomalies. The decadal and multidecadal timescale variability of the tropical Atlantic SST, both in the actual and in the GFDL model, stands out significantly above the background 'red noise' and is coherent within each of the time series, suggesting that specific sets of processes may be responsible for the choice of the decadal and multidecadal timescales. Finally, it must be emphasized that the GFDL coupled ocean-atmosphere model generates the decadal and multidecadal timescale variability without any externally applied force, solar or lunar, at those timescales.

Microcomputer spacecraft thermal analysis routines (MSTAR) Phase I: The user interface

The Microcomputer Spacecraft Thermal Analysis Routines (MSTAR) software package is being developed for NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center by Swales and Associates, Inc. (S&AI). In December 1992, S&AI was awarded a phase I Small Business Inovative Research contract fronm NASA to develop a microcomputer based thermal analysis program to replace the current SSPTA and TRASYS programs. Phase I consists of a six month effort which will focus on developing geometric model generation and visualization capabilities using a graphical user interface (GUI). The information contained in this paper encompasses the work performed during the Phase I development cycle; with emphasis on the development of the graphical user interface (GUI). This includes both the theory behind and specific examples of how the MSTAR GUI was implemented. Furthermore, this report discusses new applications and enhancements which will improve the capabilities and commercialization of the MSTAR program.

Langley's CSI evolutionary model: Phase 2

Phase 2 testbed is part of a sequence of laboratory models, developed at NASA Langley Research Center, to enhance our understanding on how to model, control, and design structures for space applications. A key problem with structures that must perform in space is the appearance of unwanted vibrations during operations. Instruments, design independently by different scientists, must share the same vehicle causing them to interact with each other. Once in space, these problems are difficult to correct and therefore, prediction via analysis design, and experiments is very important. Phase 2 laboratory model and its predecessors are designed to fill a gap between theory and practice and to aid in understanding important aspects in modeling, sensor and actuator technology, ground testing techniques, and control design issues. This document provides detailed information on the truss structure and its main components, control computer architecture, and structural models generated along with corresponding experimental results.
