Effects of Pressure on Superconducting Properties and Vortex Pinning of CaKFe 4 As 4 Single Crystals

Measurements of low field magnetization, trapped flux magnetization and 5 K flux creep in single crystal of CaKFe 4 As 4 under pressure up to 7.5 GPa in a diamond pressure cell are presented. Further, the observed evolution of the temperature dependence of the self-field critical current and slowing down of the base temperature flux creep rate are explained within the two sources of pinning hypothesis involving presence of CaFe 2 As 2 intergrowths suggested in the literature. Above the half collapsed tetragonal structural transition under pressure, where superconductivity is non-bulk or absent, critically diminished or no diamagnetism and flux trapped magnetization were observed.

A thermal model for analysis of infrared images

A mathematical model derived from the equation of heat conduction was developed to assist in interpreting thermal infrared images acquired from aircraft and spacecraft. The model assumes steady state boundary conditions. It contains parameters of rock and soil properties, atmospheric effects, site location, and season. The results predicted provide an explanation for the thermal differences among granite, limestone, and dolomite recorded in the December 1968 daytime and predawn flights over the Mill Creek, Oklahoma test site, during which representative thermal inertia and albedo values were used. A second test of the model made use of data acquired during the June 1970 predawn overflight of Mill Creek. A simple model of transient heating of the ground was constructed as an extension of the overall model, in order to examine the effects of atmospheric perturbations. The results obtained are consistent with those of ground observations made at the time of the overflight.

Effect of metallurgical structure and properties on adhesion and friction behavior of cobalt alloys

The metallurgical structure and some of the mechanical properties of two cobalt alloys, cobalt-50% iron and cobalt-25% molybdenum-10% chromium, were determined under various heat treated conditions. The mechanical properties of the bcc disordered Co-50Fe alloy, which was found to be very brittle, indicated an exceedingly low fracture strength, low hardness, and very weak grain boundary strength. Ordering by suitable heat treatment only produced a more brittle material with a lower fracture strength and a slightly higher hardness value. Work hardening was found to produce a finer grain structure and a greater grain boundary strength. Tensile properties were examined. It was found that the Co-25Mo-10Cr alloy was difficult to place in the alpha Co solid solution condition, which limited the ability to use precipitation as a hardening reaction. Over two hundred adhesion cycles from zero contact load, to maximum load, to fracture were conducted between couples for each of the above alloys in an ultrahigh vacuum system which would permit the sample surfaces to be cleaned of all contaminant layers. In the Co-50Fe case, the calculated fracture stress from the adhesion tests showed values in the range of 80 to 150 k.s.i., which is about ten times greater than the values from tension tests.

Electrothermal oscillations and the quasilinear theory of electron enthalpy fluctuations in magnetohydrodynamic generators and magnetoplasmadynamic arc thrusters

Flucturations in electron density and temperature coupled through OHM's Law are studied for MHD power generator and MPD arc thruster applications. The dispersion relation based on linear theory is derived, and the two limiting cases of infinite ionization rate and frozen flow are examined. The nonlinear effects of the frozen flow case are then studied in the quasilinear limit. Equations are derived for the amplitude of the fluctuation and its effect upon Ohm's Law and the electron temperature equation. Conditions under which a steady state can exist in the presence of the fluctuation are examined, and effective transport properties are determined.

Epitaxial gallium arsenide wafers

The preparation of GaAs epitaxial layers by a vapor transport process using AsCl3, Ga and H2 was pursued to provide epitaxial wafers suitable for the fabrication of transferred electron oscillators and amplifiers operating in the subcritical region. Both n-n(+) structures, and n(++)-n-n(+) sandwich structures were grown using n(+) (Si-doped) GaAs substrates. Process variables such as the input AsCl3 concentration, gallium temperature, and substrate temperature and temperature gradient and their effects on properties are presented and discussed.

Determination of design allowable strength properties of elevated-temperature alloys. Part 1: Coated columbium alloys

A program to determine the characteristics of two coated columbium alloy systems for spacecraft structures is discussed. The alloy was evaluated as coated base material, coated butt-welded material, and material thermal/pressure cycled prior to testing up to 30 cycles. Evaluation was by means of tensile tests covering the temperature range to 2400 F. Design allowables were computed and are presented as tables of data. The summary includes a room temperature property table, effect of temperature curves, and typical stress-strain curves.
