New measurement of the E c.m . = 323 keV resonance in the 19 F(p,γ) 20 Ne reaction

At temperatures below 0.1 GK, the 19 F(p, γ) 20 Ne reaction is the only breakout path out of the CNO cycle. Experimental studies of this reaction are challenging from a technical perspective due to copious γ -ray background from the far stronger 19 F(p, α) 16 O reaction channel. Here, we present the first inverse kinematics study of the 19 F(p, γ) 20 Ne reaction, in which we measure the strength of the 323-keV resonance. We find a strength value of ωγ = $3.3$$^{+1.1}_{–0.9}$ meV, which is a factor of two larger than the most recent previous study. Here, the discrepancy is likely the result of a direct to ground state transition which previous studies were not sensitive to. We also observe the transition to the first 2 – state, which has not been observed for this resonance in previous studies. A new thermonuclear reaction rate is calculated and compared with the literature.

Shell model analysis of the B ( E 2,2 + → 0 + ) values in the A = 70, T = 1 triplet 70 Kr, 70 Br, and 70 Se

The B(E2, 2 + → 0 + ) transition strengths of the T=1 isobaric triplet 70 Kr, 70 Br, 70 Se, recently measured at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF), are discussed in terms of state-of-the-art large scale shell model calculations using the JUN45 and JUN45 + LNPS plus Coulomb interactions. In this Letter we argue that, depending on the effective charges used, the calculations are either in line with the experimental data within statistical uncertainties, or the anomaly happens in 70 Br, rather than 70 Kr. In the latter case, we suggest that it can be due to the presence of a hitherto undetected 1 + T = 0 state below the yrast 2 + T = 1 state. Furthermore, our results do not support a shape change of 70 Kr with respect to the other members of the isobaric multiplet.

Systematics of E 2 strength in the s d shell with the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group

Recent developments in ab initio nuclear theory demonstrate promising results in medium- to heavy-mass nuclei. A particular challenge for many of the many-body methodologies, however, is an accurate treatment of the electric-quadrupole, E2, strength associated with collectivity. The valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) is a particularly powerful method for accessing medium- and high-mass nuclei but has been found to underpredict E2 strengths. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the isospin dependence of this underprediction. We perform a systematic comparison of VS-IMSRG calculations with available literature. We make use of isoscalar and isovector contributions to the E2 matrix elements to assess isoscalar and isovector contributions to the missing strength. It is found that the E2 strength is consistent throughout T z =|12|, T z =|1|, T z =|32|, and T z =2 pairs within the sd shell. Furthermore, no isovector contribution to the deficiency is identified. A comparison with toy-models and coupled-cluster calculations is used to discuss potential origins of the missing strength, which arises from missing many-particle, many-hole excitations out of the model space. The absence of any significant isovector contribution to the missing E2 strength indicates that the E2 strength discrepancy, and therefore any correction, is largely independent of the isospin of the nuclei in question.

Ab initio estimation of E 2 strengths in Li 8 and its neighbors by normalization to the measured quadrupole moment

For electric quadrupole (E2) observables, which depend on the large-distance tails of the nuclear wave function, ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) calculations converge slowly, making meaningful predictions challenging to obtain. Nonetheless, the calculated values for different E2 matrix elements, particularly those involving levels with closely-related structure (e.g., within the same rotational band) are found to be robustly proportional. This observation suggests that a known value for one observable may be used to determine the overall scale of E2 strengths, and thereby provide predictions for others. In particular, we demonstrate that meaningful predictions for E2 transitions may be obtained by calibration to the ground-state quadrupole moment. Here, we test this approach for well-measured low-lying E2 transitions in 7 Li and 9 Be, then provide predictions for transitions in 8 Li and 9 Li. In particular, we address the 2 + → 1 + transition in 8 Li, for which the reported measured strength exceeds ab initio Green's function Monte Carlo (GFMC) predictions by over an order of magnitude.

Final-state interactions and spin structure in E 1 breakup of Li 11 in halo effective field theory

In this work, we calculate the E1 breakup of the 2n halo nucleus 11 Li in halo effective field theory (Halo EFT) at leading order. In Halo EFT, 11 Li is treated as a three-body system of a 9 Li core and two neutrons. We present a detailed investigation of final-state interactions (FSIs) in the neutron-neutron (nn) and neutron-core (nc) channels. We employ Møller operators to formulate an expansion scheme that satisfies the non-energy-weighted cluster sum rule and successively includes higher-order terms in the multiple-scattering series for the FSI. Computing the E1 strength up to third order in this scheme, we observe apparent convergence and good agreement with experiment. The neutron-neutron FSI is by far the most important contribution and largely determines the maximum value of the E1 distribution. However, inclusion of nc FSI does shift the peak position to slightly lower energies. Moreover, we investigate the sensitivity of the E1 response to the spin structure of the neutron- 9 Li interaction. We contrast results for an interaction that is the same in the spin-1 and spin-2 channels with one that is only operative in the spin-2 channel, and find that good agreement with experimental data is only obtained if the interaction is present in both spin channels. The latter case is shown to be equivalent to a calculation in which the spin of 9 Li is neglected.

Comprehensive symmetric-hybrid ring design for a proton EDM experiment at below 10 –29 e · cm

A concise demonstrative summary of the Symmetric Hybrid ring design for the storage ring proton electric dipole moment experiment is presented. In this paper, critical issues such as lattice design, background electrical fields, geometrical phase, general relativity, spin coherence time and polarimeter systematics are presented. Overall, we find that with the currently proposed design iteration, systematic error sources are reduced by orders of magnitude and that the ring alignment requirements are within the currently available technology.
