Differential cross-section measurements of Higgs boson production in the H → τ + τ - decay channel in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Differential measurements of Higgs boson production in the τ-lepton-pair decay channel are presented in the gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion (VBF), VH and $t\overline{t}H$ associated production modes, with particular focus on the VBF production mode. The data used to perform the measurements correspond to 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Two methods are used to perform the measurements: the Simplified Template Cross-Section (STXS) approach and an Unfolded Fiducial Differential measurement considering only the VBF phase space. For the STXS measurement, events are categorized by their production mode and kinematic properties such as the Higgs boson’s transverse momentum (${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ ), the number of jets produced in association with the Higgs boson, or the invariant mass of the two leading jets (mjj). For the VBF production mode, the ratio of the measured cross-section to the Standard Model prediction for m jj > 1.5 TeV and ${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ > 200 GeV (${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ < 200 GeV) is ${1.29}_{-0.34}^{+0.39}$ (${0.12}_{-0.33}^{+0.34}$ ). This is the first VBF measurement for the higher-${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ criteria, and the most precise for the lower-${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ criteria. The fiducial cross-section measurements, which only consider the kinematic properties of the event, are performed as functions of variables characterizing the VBF topology, such as the signed ΔΦ jj between the two leading jets. The measurements have a precision of 30%–50% and agree well with the Standard Model predictions. These results are interpreted in the SMEFT framework, and place the strongest constraints to date on the CP-odd Wilson coefficient ${c}_{H\overset{\sim }{W}}$ .

The effects of newly measured cross sections in hydrogen on the production of secondary nuclei during the propagation of cosmic rays through interstellar H

The cross sections of six important cosmic ray source nuclei in hydrogen at several energies between 300 and 1800 MeV/nuc were measured. Significant differences, sometimes exceeding 50%, exist between these new measurements and the earlier semiempirical predictions, and a new set of semiempirical formulae are being determined that better describe this fragmentation. New cross sections were obtained so that the systematics of their effects on cosmic ray propagation through interstellar hydrogen can be examined.

Ozone absorption cross section measurements in the Wulf bands

A tandem dual-beam spectrometer has been developed to determine ozone absorption cross sections for 13 selected wavelengths between 750 and 975 nm at room temperature. The increasingly pronounced structure in this region may interfere with atmospheric trace gas transitions that are useful for remote sensing and complicate the measurement of aerosols. Ozone concentrations were determined by absorption at the common HeNe laser transition near 632.8 nm using the absolute cross section reported previously. The overall accuracy of these room temperature measurements is generally better than 2 percent. A synoptic near-IR spectrum scaled to these measurements is employed for comparison with results of previous studies.

Calculation of improved spallation cross sections

Several research groups have recently carried out highly precise measurements (to about 10 percent) of high-energy nuclear spallation cross sections. These measurements, above 5 GeV, cover a broad range of elements: V, Fe, Cu, Ag, Ta and Au. Even the small cross sections far off the peak of the isotopic distribution curves have been measured. The semiempirical calculations are compared with the measured values. Preliminary comparisons indicate that the parameters of our spallation relations (Silberberg and Tsao, 1973) for atomic numbers 20 to 83 need modifications, e.g. a reduced slope of the mass yield distribution, broader isotopic distributions, and a shift of the isotopic distribution toward the neutron-deficient side. The required modifications are negligible near Fe and Cu, but increase with increasing target mass.

Evaluation of Thermal Neutron Scattering Law and Cross Sections for Calcium Hydride

Presented in this paper are the calculated thermal scattering law (TSL) and thermal neutron scattering cross sections for Calcium Hydride, hereafter referred to by its chemical symbol CaH 2 . The only other such data prior to this evaluation are thermal neutron scattering libraries in the JEFF database, which suffer from nonphysical features and inaccuracies. The data in this evaluation are calculated from first principles; Density Functional Theory (DFT) is used to calculate the phonon density of states (DOS), which is the primary input required to calculate the TSL. The TSL and cross sections have been evaluated for the three non-equivalent atom cites in the CaH 2: Ca, H 1 , and H 2 . Each evaluation has been submitted to the NNDC for consideration in the next ENDF/B release.

Evaluation of Thermal Neutron Scattering Cross Section of Uranium Silicide with Ab Initio Lattice Dynamics

Uranium silicide (U 3 Si 2 ) is a candidate material for the high-density nuclear fuel in commercial light water reactors [1], [2]. Its higher uranium density, 11.3 g-U/cm3, compared to that of uranium dioxide (UO 2 ), 9.7 g-U/cm3, can improve the performance of a nuclear reactor while using low enriched uranium (LEU) and diversify the choice of cladding materials [1]–[3]. It also has a higher thermal conductivity than UO 2 , which can reduce the thermal stress on the material caused by a temperature gradient across the fuel pellet and provide a larger margin for some postulated accidents [1], [2], [4]. Furthermore, compared to U3Si, another high-density fuel candidate, it has better resistance to in-pile swelling due to less irradiation-induced rapid amorphization [1], [3]. Corresponding to its importance in nuclear engineering, many previous studies have reported the properties of U3Si2. Experiments showed that U 3 Si 2 is a paramagnetic (PM) metal, where a slight linear increase in magnetic susceptibility was measured with increasing temperature [5], [6]. In addition, thermodynamic quantities such as thermal expansion coefficient, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity were experimentally determined over a wide temperature range [1], [7], [8]. In several computational studies, ab initio atomistic simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) were performed to calculate various properties including elastic constants, electronic density of states (DOS), and phonon dispersion curves [9]–[12]. Nevertheless, thermal neutron scattering cross sections, which are critical to the prediction of the parameters in reactor physics that are ultimately related to reactor criticality, have not yet been evaluated for U3Si2. The scattering cross section can be calculated from the phonon DOS, or the energy spectrum of lattice vibrations, of the crystalline system [13], [14]. However, there is also no experimental data available for the phonon DOS of U 3 Si 2 . While some computational studies reported the phonon DOS and/or dispersion curves from ab initio simulations [9]–[12], the accuracy cannot be guaranteed because it is unclear whether the spin-polarization behavior of PM U 3 Si 2 was properly described. In the present study, the thermal neutron scattering cross section for U 3 Si 2 is evaluated for the first time by calculating the phonon DOS for U3Si2 from ab initio lattice dynamics (AILD) simulations based on DFT. First, U 3 Si 2 is modeled based on the experimental structure, and AILD simulations are performed on the modeled U3Si2 to optimize the structure. Next, AILD simulations are performed for supercells with atomic displacement to calculate Hellmann-Feynman forces. Based on the calculated forces, partial phonon DOSs for U and Si are obtained, and the thermal neutron scattering law (TSL) for U 3 Si 2 is finally evaluated. To verify the accuracy of the calculations in the present study, the calculation results are compared with experimental data on the structure and heat capacity of U3Si2 [1], [7], [8], [15].

Simulation of SEU Cross-sections using MRED under Conditions of Limited Device Information

This viewgraph presentation reviews the simulation of Single Event Upset (SEU) cross sections using the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) resistance and electrode diffusion (MRED) tool using "Best guess" assumptions about the process and geometry, and direct ionization, low-energy beam test results. This work will also simulate SEU cross-sections including angular and high energy responses and compare the simulated results with beam test data for the validation of the model. Using MRED, we produced a reasonably accurate upset response model of a low-critical charge SRAM without detailed information about the circuit, device geometry, or fabrication process

Theoretical estimates of photoproduction cross sections for neutral subthreshold pions in carbon-carbon collisions

Using the Weizsacher-Williams method of virtual quanta, total cross section estimates for the photoproduction of neutral subthreshold pins in carbon-carbon collisions at incident energies below 300 MeV/nucleon are made. Comparisons with recent experimental data indicate that the photoproduction mechanism makes an insignificant contribution to these measured cross sections.

Light ray tracing through a leaf cross section

A light ray, incident at about 5 deg to the normal, is geometrically plotted through the drawing of the cross section of a soybean leaf using Fresnel's equations and Snell's law. The optical mediums of the leaf considered for ray tracing are: air, cell sap, chloroplast, and cell wall. The ray is also drawn through the same leaf cross section with cell wall and air as the only optical mediums. The values of the reflection and transmission found from the ray tracing tests agree closely with the experimental results obtained using a Beckman Dk-2A Spectroreflector.

Photoabsorption cross sections of methane and ethane, 1380-1600 A, at T equals 295 K and T equals 200 K

Photoabsorption cross sections of methane and ethane have been determined in the wavelength range from 1380 to 1600 A at room (295 K) and dry-ice (200 K) temperatures. It is found that the room-temperature ethane data are in excellent agreement with the older measurements of Okabe and Becker (1963) rather than with more recent determinations and that a small systematic blueshift occurs at the foot of the molecular absorption edges of both gases as the gases are cooled from room temperature to 200 K, a value close to the actual temperature of the Jovian atmosphere. It is concluded that methane photoabsorption will dominate until its cross section is about 0.01 that of ethane, which occurs at about 1440 A, and that ethane should be the dominant photoabsorber in the Jovian atmosphere in the region from above 1440 A to not farther than 1575 A.

Measurements of Higgs boson production cross sections and couplings in the diphoton decay channel at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV

Measurements of Higgs boson production cross sections and couplings in events where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of photons are reported. Events are selected from a sample of proton-proton collisions at s√ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 . Analysis categories enriched in Higgs boson events produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, vector boson associated production, and production associated with top quarks are constructed. The total Higgs boson signal strength, relative to the standard model (SM) prediction, is measured to be 1.12±0.09. Other properties of the Higgs boson are measured, including SM signal strength modifiers, production cross sections, and its couplings to other particles. These include the most precise measurements of gluon fusion and vector boson fusion Higgs boson production in several different kinematic regions, the first measurement of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair in five regions of the Higgs boson transverse momentum, and an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson production in association with a single top quark. All results are found to be in agreement with the SM expectations.

Generation and optimization of cross-sections for electron-C 4 F 7 N collisions

Abstract A complete and consistent set of electron-neutral collision cross-sections for the novel insulating gas C 4 F 7 N is reported. The set is composed of a combination of cross-sections previously reported in literature, optimized via a genetic algorithm in conjunction with a multi-term Boltzmann equation solver, and calculatedab initiousing the R-matrix code Quantemol-EC. The finalized set accurately reproduces reported macroscopic rate and transport coefficients as well as Townsend coefficients and critical electric field strengths in C 4 F 7 N and its mixtures with nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon.

First Proton-Induced Cross Sections on a Stored Rare Ion Beam: Measurement of Te 118 ( p , γ ) for Explosive Nucleosynthesis

We present the first nuclear cross-section measurements of (p,$\gamma$) and (p,n) reactions on 118 Te at energies relevant for the $\gamma$-process nucleosynthesis. Absolute cross-section values for center-of-mass energies of 6, 7 and 10 MeV are provided, together with a theoretical extrapolation to the Gamow window. This experiment marks the first time that direct proton-induced reactions have been measured on a radioactive ion beam at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI, Darmstadt. This paves the way for a large variety of measurements, delivering new constraints for explosive nucleosynthesis and for physics beyond nuclear stability.

An analytical procedure for computing smooth transitions between two specified cross sections with applications to blended wing body configuration

An analytical procedure is described for designing smooth transition surfaces for blended wing-body configurations. Starting from two specified cross section shapes, the procedure generates a gradual transition from one cross section shape to the other as an analytic blend of the two shapes. The method utilizes a conformal mapping, with subsequent translation and scaling, to transform the specified and shapes to curves that can be combined more smoothly. A sample calculation is applied to a blended wing-body missile type configuration with a top mounted inlet.
