SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego User Manual (V.5.4)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Effect of Processing on Precipitation Kinetics in Nano Polycrystalline 7075 Aluminum Alloy

Fairmount Technologies (FT) seeks to optimize the thermomechanical processing of Aluminum Alloy 7075. The target yield strength is 20% higher than commercially available 7075-T6 temper sheet which will enable structural light weighting by a similar magnitude and reduce the carbon footprint of the transportation sector. To reduce processing cost and make this commercially viable, it is important to understand physical mechanisms driving microstructural changes. A mesoscale phase-field model seeded with experimentally measured microstructures and assessed thermodynamic and kinetic properties will be developed and exercised using HPC at PNNL. It will account for the effect of deformation, temperature, and chemistry on precipitation kinetics in nanocrystalline microstructures. Our objective is to understand this “stress-aging” coupling by performing parametric simulations with mesoscale models for a better understanding of GP zone and η' formation in nanocrystalline 7075 Al. This will help FT optimize processing schedules to achieve desired microstructures that increase both strength and ductility.

Multiscale Development and Validation of the Stainless Steel Alloy Corrosion (SStAC) Tool for High Temperature Engine Materials

The goal of this project was to create a simulation tool to assist in part design, reducing costs by eliminating the need for conservative material selection, and enabling alloy optimization to improve corrosion resistance. Thus, it helps decrease costs for existing engines and assists in the material and engine design for the engines of the future. To meet our stated goal, we developed the Stainless-Steel Alloy Corrosion (SStAC) tool, which: (1) Models corrosion of engine valves fabricated from 21-2N valve steel in an engine environment at temperatures up to 800 °C. (2) Runs in 1D for a fast estimate of the corrosion rate, and in 2D or 3D for more detailed simulations that represent any part geometry and predict the precise location and rate of corrosion and its impact on the mechanical and thermal behavior. (3) Was implemented using the open-source Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). (4) Couples the corrosion model with mechanics and thermal transport models. The SStAC tool can predict the corrosion rate of 21-2N engine valves with less than 10% error.

Theoretical Characterization of Correlated Redox Activity and Nanostructure in Hybrid Supercapacitors

Electrochemical energy storage devices such as supercapacitors, batteries, and fuel cells fundamentally rely on complex and correlated redox processes at electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Furthermore, the nanostructured morphology of high-surface area electrodes can significantly modulate this physics, and further complicates mechanistic understanding. Focusing on supercapacitor devices composed of carbon/polymer based electrodes and organic electrolytes, we will employ first-principles-based computer simulations to understand the coupling of these essential energy storage pathways occurring at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Of critical importance will be the development of theoretical methodologies to allow for the first-principles description of redox processes within electrochemical systems at fixed external voltage. Based on our hypothesis that redox activity and ion structuring is dramatically altered under nanoconfinement, we will then conduct a systematic study utilizing atomistic models of nanoporous carbon electrodes to understand the coupling of redox-activity, energy-storage, and nanostructuring for a variety of electrode morphologies.

Numerical Modeling and Optimization of the iProTech Pitching Inertial Pump (PIP) Wave Energy Converter (WEC) (Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number: CRD-22-22968)

This work generated a first-of-its-kind automated workflow to couple time-domain simulations of wave energy converters written in one software language with a set of design generation and evaluation scripts written in another software language. This automated workflow used an existing optimization package to analyze the sensitivity of different design parameters on the power output of a specific WEC, iProTech’s Pitching Inertial Pump (PIP). Geometric, inertial, and power take-off variables were all varied and optimized to find values that produced the highest amount of power generated over varying wave conditions. The findings on these parameter sensitivity studies are used to inform future design iterations of the PIP WEC. Including more design variables in the optimizations will only increase computational run time and further software development is needed to analyze a larger optimization.

Hydrodynamic Coupling to a Homogenized Radiation Transport Method based on Young Measures

Resolving radiation transport fields subject to opacity profiles with strong, oscillatory line structure while potentially falling under intermediate optical depth conditions presents a numerical challenge in radiation transport modeling. The Young measure-based homogenization technique formulated by Haut et al. (2017) was investigated as a candidate method for resolving radiation fields under such conditions more accurately. The method was compared against frequently-utilized mean opacity methods as the Rosseland and Planck formulations. In this work, all methods were tested through radiation slab calculations separately comprised of aluminum, copper, and krypton, each for different thermodynamic conditions. Following these offline radiation slab calculations, demonstrations shifted towards the SCEPTRE radiation transport code and, subsequently, the multiphysics ALEGRA code for approximately-coupled radiation-material simulations. Throughout all the simulations shown in this study, for a fixed computational cost, the homogenized method was observed to be more accurate than any of the solutions determined through traditional mean opacity approaches.

Modeling Low Intensity Fires: Lessons Learned from 2012 RxCADRE

Coupled fire-atmosphere models are increasingly being used to study low-intensity fires, such as those that are used in prescribed fire applications. Thus, the need arises to evaluate these models for their ability to accurately represent fire spread in marginal burning conditions. In this study, wind and fuel data collected during the Prescribed Fire Combustion and Atmospheric Dynamics Research Experiments (RxCADRE) fire campaign were used to generate initial and boundary conditions for coupled fire-atmosphere simulations. We present a novel method to obtain fuels representation at the model grid scale using a combination of imagery, machine learning, and field sampling. Several methods to generate wind input conditions for the model from eight different anemometer measurements are explored. We find a strong sensitivity of fire outcomes to wind inputs. This result highlights the critical need to include variable wind fields as inputs in modeling marginal fire conditions. This work highlights the complexities of comparing physics-based model results against observations, which are more acute in marginal burning conditions, where stronger sensitivities to local variability in wind and fuels drive fire outcomes.
