Discovery of the binary nature of SMC X-1 from Uhuru.

The X-ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud SMC X-1 was observed by Uhuru on numerous occasions from December 1970 through April 1972. As previously reported by Leong et al. (1971), the source was seen to be variable. It was found that SMC X-1 occults with a period of 3.8927 days. The energy spectrum is cut off at low energies and flat. There is no large-amplitude periodic pulsation. The luminosity observed makes the binary source SMC X-1 comparable in strength to both the stronger galactic sources and the discrete sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Possible explanation for nonthermal radio noise from binary stars.

Radio emission from the binary stars alpha-Sco, beta-Per, and beta-Lyr is interpreted as due to the mass exchange between the components. The electrons in the inflowing stream excite plasma waves near the surface of the receptor star, and these waves generate radio emission. Crude predictions of radio frequency, intensity, and timescales of variation seem compatible with current observations.

Tidal evolution in close binary systems. II.

The aim of the present investigation is to determine the explicit forms of differential equations which govern secular perturbations of the orbital elements of close binary systems in the plane of the orbit (i.e., of the semi-major axis, eccentricity, and longitude of the periastron) arising from the lag of dynamical tides due to viscosity of stellar material. The results obtained are exact for any value of orbital eccentricity comprised between zero and unity, and include the effects produced by the second, third and fourth-harmonic dynamical tides, as well as by axial rotation with arbitrary inclination of the equator to the orbital plane.

Evidence for the binary nature of 2U 1700-37.

Analysis of Uhuru data on the X-ray source 2U 1700-37 has revealed the presence of regular occultations. The period is 3.4 days with an occultation duration of 1.1 days. The source is highly variable on a time scale of minutes. Significant intensity variations have also been observed on a time scale of 0.1 second with a 3 sigma upper limit of 17 percent on the percentage periodically pulsed. The energy spectrum is flat and shows a large amount of low-energy absorption. The data indicate that 2U 1700-37 is an X-ray source in a binary system. The 6.6-mag O7f star HD 153919 is suggested as the optical candidate.-

Comparing bandwidth requirements for binary baseband signals.

The percentage of total power passed through ideal band-limited channels with bandwidths equal to various multiples of the bit rate is examined for 14 unique binary baseband signaling schemes. The channel bandwidth required to pass 5 percent of the total power is determined as a measure of the need for near-dc channel response. Conclusions are reached as to which signals would be most suitable for high-rate magnetic tape recording.

Maximum likelihood synchronizer for binary overlapping PCM/NRZ signals.

A maximum likelihood parameter estimation technique for the self bit synchronization problem is investigated. The input sequence to the bit synchronizer is a sequence of binary overlapping PCM/NRZ signal in the presence of white Gaussian noise with zero mean and known variance. The resulting synchronizer consists of matched filters, a transition device and a weighting function. Finally, the performance is examined by Monte Carlo simulations.

Correlations among the parameters of the spherical model for eclipsing binaries.

Correlation coefficients have been computed to investigate the parameters used to describe the spherical model of an eclipsing binary system. Regions in parameter hyperspace have been identified where strong correlations exist and, by implication, the solution determinacy is low. The results are presented in tabular form for a large number of system configurations.

The role of rotation in close binary systems of high mass.

A quantitative confrontation of theory and observation of massive close binary systems is presented in order to evaluate the role of axial rotation in the evolution of the individual stellar components as well as of the system as a whole. The detached systems are essentially unevolved, and possess components in approximately uniform rotation. The semidetached systems are definitely evolved, having suffered a heavy mass exchange before the stage of hydrogen exhaustion at the center of the original primary, and often possess mass-gaining components in fast nonuniform rotation. Except in the case of wide systems, tidal friction eventually reinduces synchronism of rotation in both components and both components evolve inhomogeneously. Spin-down times of the envelope and core, total rotational angular momenta, and effects of spin-orbit interaction are calculated.

Digital image registration method based upon binary boundary maps

A relatively fast method is presented for matching or registering the digital data of imagery from the same ground scene acquired at different times, or from different multispectral images, sensors, or both. It is assumed that the digital images can be registed by using translations and rotations only, that the images are of the same scale, and that little or no distortion exists between images. It is further assumed that by working with several local areas of the image, the rotational effects in the local areas can be neglected. Thus, by treating the misalignments of local areas as translations, it is possible to determine rotational and translational misalignments for a larger portion of the image containing the local areas. This procedure of determining the misalignment and then registering the data according to the misalignment can be repeated until the desired degree of registration is achieved. The method to be presented is based upon the use of binary boundary maps produced from the raw digital imagery rather than the raw digital data.

Threshold detection in an on-off binary communications channel with atmospheric scintillation

The optimum detection threshold in an on-off binary optical communications system operating in the presence of atmospheric turbulence was investigated assuming a poisson detection process and log normal scintillation. The dependence of the probability of bit error on log amplitude variance and received signal strength was analyzed and semi-emperical relationships to predict the optimum detection threshold derived. On the basis of this analysis a piecewise linear model for an adaptive threshold detection system is presented. Bit error probabilities for non-optimum threshold detection system were also investigated.

Effect of solutes in binary columbium /Nb/ alloys on creep strength

The effect of seven different solutes in binary columbium (Nb) alloys on creep strength was determined from 1400 to 3400 F for solute concentrations to 20 at.%, using a new method of creep-strength measurement. The technique permits rapid determination of approximate creep strength over a large temperature span. All of the elements were found to increase the creep strength of columbium except tantalum. This element did not strengthen columbium until the concentration exceeded 10 at.%. Hafnium, zirconium, and vanadium strengthed columbium most at low temperatures and concentrations, whereas tungsten, molybdenum, and rhenium contributed more to creep strength at high temperatures and concentrations.

A study of the reflection effect in close spectroscopic binary stars

Four W Ursae Majoris-type binaries were investigated using the simple model of blackbody solid spheres. Numerical computations were carried out for the rotationally broadened profiles of spectral lines Sr II (4077.7) and Ca I (4226.7) and the mean radial velocities. These mean velocities at different phases outside eclipses were compared with sinusoidal values of the radial velocity curve for point masses. Within the present accuracy of observations, the reflection effect is small and may be neglected in the analysis of radial velocity curves.

On the fractional weight of distinct binary n-tuples

It is shown that the fraction p of ones in the Mn positions of M distinct binary n-tuples satisfies a given inequality. This inequality, which simplifies the derivation of the distance property of the Justesen codes, is proved using an elegant information-theoretic argument due to Kriz.

LX Persei, an eclipsing binary with H and K emission

The masses and MK classes were calculated for the eclipsing spectroscopic binary LX Persei. Its spectrum shows strong H and K emission and doubled lines in the photographic region. The Ca II emission velocity shifts vary in phase with the secondary's absorption lines and are presumably associated with this component. The stars are tentatively classed as G0 V and K0 IV, and the cooler component is the more massive by a ratio of 0.96. The system has a period of 8.0 days.

Binary signaling over channels containing quadratic nonlinearities

This paper examines the transmission of binary data signals over channels which contain quadratic nonlinearities and additive Gaussian noise. We consider the case where the channel is nonlinear with memory and where the signal is passed through an input receiver filter and sampled once every signaling interval. The samples are represented by a discrete Volterra series and a special case where the received sample contains a single quadratic distortion term is examined. The optimum (maximum-likelihood) receiver (processor) is derived and upper and lower performance bounds obtained. The performance of a practical, suboptimum receiver is examined by means of computer simulation and is shown to be very close to the lower bound of the optimum receiver. Next we examine the case where the received sample contains two quadratic distortion terms. Again, upper and lower performance bounds are obtained.

The nature of Cygnus X-3 - A prototype for old population binary X-ray sources

Description of a model for Cyg X-3 based on a short-lived phase in the evolution of a U Geminorum-type binary where rapid mass transfer and mass loss occurs. X rays are generated by accretion on the white dwarf component, while both stars are enveloped in a thick stellar wind emanating from the red dwarf. Electron scattering in the cloud is responsible for the modulation of the X rays with the orbital period of 4.8 hours. Ultraviolet radiation and low-energy X rays absorbed in the cloud are reradiated in the optical and infrared, which, it is predicted, will display a 4.8-hr modulation in phase with the X-ray light curve. The X-ray absorption cutoff should also vary with phase, appearing at minimum energy when the source is at maximum light. The model also provides a framework in which certain aspects of the associated nonthermal radio source may be understood. Finally, it is suggested that the model may be applicable to Sco X-1 as well.
