Recent Amplified Global Gross Primary Productivity Due to Temperature Increase is Offset by Reduced Productivity Due to Water Constraints

Satellite remote sensing observationsshow an increased greenness trend over land in recent decades. Whilegreennessobservationscanindicateincreased productivity, estimation of total annual productivity is highly dependent on vegetation response to climate and environmental conditions. Models have been struggling to determinehow much carbon is taken up by plants as a result of increased atmospheric CO2fertilization. Current remote sensing light use efficiency (LUE) models contain considerable uncertainty due to the lack of spatial and temporal variability in maximum LUE parameter and climate sensitivity defined for global plantfunctional types (PFTs). We usedthe optimum LUE (LUEopt) previously derived fromtheglobal FLUXNET network to improve estimation of global gross primary productivity (GPP)for the period 1982–2016. Our results indicateincreasing GPP in northern latitudesowing to reduced cold temperature constraintson plant growth, thereby suggesting increasing negative carbon-climate feedbackin high latitudes. In the tropics, by contrast, our results indicate an emerging positive climate feedback, mainly due to increasing atmospheric vapor pressure deficit(VPD).Further pervasive VPD increase is likely to continue to reduce global GPPand amplify carbon emissions.

Noise Evaluation of Various High-gain, Very-low-noise Current Sense Amplifier Circuits

We report an evaluation of three different electronic topologies for a high-gain, very-low-noise current sense amplifier (CSA) for use in remote sensing applications. The circuits in question were built from commercially available parts and were evaluated for their performance in an interface to a photodetector used in NASA’s Lunar Flashlight infrared spectrometer spacecraft. Through constraints on the test environment, we were able to reduce the impact of systematic noise sources by making them common mode to the measurement. The parts compared were based on the ADA4530-1, the LTC6240, and the LSK389A. We determined which of the three different versions of the CSA had superior noise performance for selection for use on the instrument. Two tests and simulations of each board compare and contrast functionality and performance, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and based on those results, we show that the ADA4350-1 out-performed the opposing components.

Ka-Band GaN-on-SiC MMIC Balanced High Power Amplifier for NASA's Lunar Missions

The feasibility of Ka-band GaN-on-SiC MMIC based balanced high power amplifier (HPA) for science data downlinks from NASA’s Lunar mission assets in space is investigated. The HPA combines the RF output power from two PAs using a rectangular waveguide based 3-dB hybrid coupler. The investigation includes characterizing the HPA for the overall RF output power, Gain, PAE, RMS EVM for offset-QPSK, 8PSK, 16APSK, and 32APSK waveforms, Spectrum, 3rd order IMD products, noise figure, phase noise, & group delay. The HPA has high Pout and good linearity and can support high data rate downlinks from the surface and vicinity of the Moon to Earth.

Experimental Results from Integrated LCRD Low-Earth Orbit User Modem and Amplifier Terminal (ILLUMA-T) Program

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Integrated LCRD Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) User Modem and Amplifier Terminal (ILLUMA-T) payload was launched and installed on the International Space Station’s (ISS) Japanese Experiment Module - Exposed Facility (JEM-EF) in November 2023. ILLUMA-T was the first space-based user to communicate with NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) using free space optical communication to transfer data from the ISS at return rates to Earth of up to 1.244 Gbps and forward rates from Earth of up to 155 Mbps. A 6-month long Experiments Program on ILLUMA-T concluded in June 2024, after which the payload was removed from the ISS and is currently de-orbiting. The Experiments Program was carefully designed to understand and characterize the Pointing, Acquisition, and Track (PAT) process with the new Modular, Agile, Scalable Optical Terminal (MAScOT), optical modem performance, and end-to-end relay performance.

Readout of Large Capacitance SiPMs by Weak Coupling to Charge Sensitive Amplifier

Large area and large capacitance silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays are employed to collect scintillation light in noble liquid time projection chambers (TPC) such as DarkSide, nEXO, MEGII, protoDUNE and DUNE. Light readout using ASICs designed for operation in noble liquids is a solution for large meter-scale photon detectors. However, conventional readout requires a high voltage decoupling capacitor larger than SiPM capacitance (in the range of tens of nF) to achieve full charge transfer to the preamplifier. Here, we demonstrate a readout concept by weakly coupling (via a capacitor lower by an order of magnitude than SiPM capacitance) to a charge sensitive amplifier, LArASIC in this case, without any loss in the signal to noise ratio (S/N). The single-photoelectron detection, signal-to-noise ratio, timing resolution, and coincidence detection are experimentally characterized.

Fully differential rail-to-rail output amplifier with inverter-based input pair

A fully differential rail-to-rail-output amplifier includes a differential input inverter pair, folded cascode pair, class AB control pair, and class AB output rail-to-rail pair. A drain associated with the folded cascode pair is operatively coupled to the class AB control pair, and the drain associated with the folded cascode pair is unconnected to the current source associated with the class AB control pair. A method of providing fully differential rail-to-rail-output amplification includes coupling a folded cascode pair operatively to a differential input inverter pair, coupling a drain associated with the folded cascode pair operatively to a class AB control pair, and coupling a class AB output rail-to-rail pair operatively to the class AB control pair.

The Regenerative Current Mirror: A Very Low Power Front-End Amplifier for Silicon Pixel Detectors

In pixelized detectors, reducing power consumption in the front end ASIC chips becomes a crucial demand. Optimization based on mature pre-amplifier schemes today is unlikely to bring sufficient improvements. A new CMOS front-end gain stage topology with very low power consumption called regenerative current mirror is developed to fulfill the demand. The circuit takes advantage of high speed performance of current amplification while operating with relatively low bias current. The regenerative current mirror uses a NMOS current mirror and a PMOS current mirror, both with nominal gain of 1, to form a loop-back topology that provides a positive feedback. An NMOS FET with an external adjustable voltage applied to it gate terminal is used to limit open loop gain of the current mirrors to be slightly lower than 1. This yields a net gain of the positive feedback loop to be much larger than 1 while operating the current mirrors under relatively low bias currents. Simulation shows that in 65 nm fabrication process, the power consumption of the gain stages suitable for silicon pixel detectors can be controlled < 10 micro-Watts per channel.

Interface Box for Dual Power Amplifier Modulators in Main Injector

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) aims to enhance the current Fermilab particle accelerator complex to intensify and accelerate more beam. To achieve this, a second power amplifier will be added to the Main Injector (MI) cavities. However, the control unit could only read signals coming from the previous power supplies, so the interface box was designed to facilitate the issue.
