Long-term trends in urban NO 2 concentrations and associated paediatric asthma incidence: estimates from global datasets

Combustion-related nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) air pollution is associated with paediatric asthma incidence. We aimed to estimate global surface NO 2 concentrations consistent with the Global Burden of Disease study for 1990-2019 at a 1 km resolution, and the concentrations and attributable paediatric asthma incidence trends in 13 189 cities from 2000 to 2019. We scaled an existing annual average NO 2 concentration dataset for 2010-12 from a land use regression model (based on 5220 NO 2 monitors in 58 countries and land use variables) to other years using NO 2 column densities from satellite and reanalysis datasets. We applied these concentrations in an epidemiologically derived concentration-response function with population and baseline asthma rates to estimate NO 2 -attributable paediatric asthma incidence. We estimated that 1.85 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0.93-2.80 million) new paediatric asthma cases were attributable to NO 2 globally in 2019, two thirds of which occurred in urban areas (1.22 million cases; 95% UI 0.60-1.8 million). The proportion of paediatric asthma incidence that is attributable to NO 2 in urban areas declined from 19.8% (1.22 million attributable cases of 6.14 million total cases) in 2000 to 16.0% (1.24 million attributable cases of 7.73 million total cases) in 2019. Urban attributable fractions dropped in high-income countries (-41%), Latin America and the Caribbean (-16%), central Europe, eastern Europe, and central Asia (-13%), and southeast Asia, east Asia, and Oceania (-6%), and rose in south Asia (+23%), sub-Saharan Africa (+11%), and north Africa and the Middle East (+5%). The contribution of NO 2 concentrations, paediatric population size, and asthma incidence rates to the change in NO 2 -attributable paediatric asthma incidence differed regionally. Despite improvements in some regions, combustion-related NO 2 pollution continues to be an important contributor to paediatric asthma incidence globally, particularly in cities. Mitigating air pollution should be a crucial element of public health strategies for children.

Free electron lasers driven by plasma accelerators: status and near-term prospects

Owing to their ultra-high accelerating gradients, combined with injection inside micrometer-scale accelerating wakefield buckets, plasma-based accelerators hold great potential to drive a new generation of free-electron lasers (FELs). Indeed, the first demonstration of plasma-driven FEL gain was reported recently, representing a major milestone for the field. Several groups around the world are pursuing these novel light sources, with methodology varying in the use of wakefield driver (laser-driven or beam-driven), plasma structure, phase-space manipulation, beamline design, and undulator technology, among others. This paper presents our best attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of the global community efforts towards plasma-based FEL research and development.

Location-Dependent Cobalt Deposition in Smartphone Cells upon Long-Term Fast-Charging Visualized by Synchrotron X-ray Fluorescence

In this work, we investigate the transition-metal dissolution of the layered cathode material LiCoO 2 upon repeated fast-charging of three smartphone batteries from different manufacturers using synchrotron micro X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF). Using this spatially resolved technique, dissolution of Co and subsequent location-dependent deposition on the anode are observed. μ-XRF mapping of selected parts of the anode electrode sheets, such as electrode folds and edges of the jelly roll, reveals the difference in the way Co is deposited on specific regions of the anode electrode. While some folds show no depositions, edges of the anode show gradually accumulating Co depositions. Furthermore, careful quantification of the dissolved Co reveals that the capacity loss scales with the amount of deposited Co on the anode, that is, total Co loss from within the cathode. Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy of the Co depositions on the anode shows that Co is mainly deposited in a reduced 2 + state. While optimization of the fast-charging protocol mitigates Li plating on the anode, no significant difference in the amount of deposited Co can be observed between an optimized and a nonoptimized fast-charging algorithm.

Pelletization with Spark Plasma Sintering and Characterization of Metal Iodides: An Assessment of Long-Term Radioiodine Immobilization Options

Four promising iodine “getter” materials (Ag, Cu, Bi, and Sn) for radioiodine capture were assessed in their pure metal-iodide (MI x ) pelletized forms to compare relative chemical durabilities. To study chemical durability, commercial MI x compounds of AgI, BiI 3 , BiOI, CuI, and SnI 4 were converted to dense monolithic pellets using spark plasma sintering. Semidynamic leach testing in the form of modified ASTM C1308 tests was then performed on the pellets in two different forms including unmounted (as-pressed) specimens (i.e., “U”) and epoxy-mounted specimens (i.e., “M”) with polished surfaces. The chemical durability results and sample characterizations showed that three of the five MI x compounds tested (i.e., AgI, CuI, and BiOI) displayed moderate to high leach resistances. Further, the remaining two MI x compounds (i.e., BiI 3 and SnI 4 ), which are both desirable iodine waste forms due to their high iodine loading capacities, readily decomposed during leach testing, indicated by crystallographic changes in the specimens as well as large amounts of iodine detected in the leachate solutions. The instabilities of BiI 3 and SnI 4 raise uncertainties for using the base metals/cations (i.e., Bi 0 /Bi 3+ and Sn 0 /Sn 4+ , respectively) as viable getters for radioiodine capture due to likely poor waste form chemical durabilities after capture and consolidation into waste forms.

Assessment of Long-Term Degradation of Adsorbents for Direct Air Capture by Ozonolysis

Porous adsorbents are a promising class of materials for the direct air capture of CO 2 (DAC). Practical implementation of adsorption-based DAC requires adsorbents that can be used for thousands of adsorption–desorption cycles without significant degradation. We examined the potential degradation of adsorbents by a mechanism that appears to have not been considered previously, namely, ozonolysis by trace levels of ozone from ambient air. We focused on amine-appended metal–organic frameworks, specifically amine-functionalized Mg 2 (dobpdc), as a representative DAC adsorbent. Estimates based on the number of amine sites in these adsorbents and the ozone concentration in air suggest that degradation by ozone may be relevant over thousands of adsorption–desorption cycles if reactions with adsorbed ozone are fast. We used density functional theory calculations to estimate reaction rates for amine groups and carbon–carbon double bonds in amine-functionalized Mg 2 (dobpdc).

Interference between Franck–Condon and Herzberg–Teller Terms in the Condensed-Phase Molecular Spectra of Metal-Based Tetrapyrrole Derivatives

The commonly used Franck-Condon (FC) approximation is inadequate for explaining the electronic spectra of compounds that possess vibrations with substantial Herzberg-Teller (HT) couplings. Metal-based tetrapyrrole derivatives, which are ubiquitous natural pigments, often exhibit prominent HT activity. In this paper, we compare the condensed phase spectra of zinc-tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) and zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc), which exhibit vastly different spectral features in spite of sharing a common tetrapyrrole backbone. The absorption and emission spectra of ZnTPP are characterized by a lack of mirror symmetry and nontrivial temperature dependence. In contrast, mirror symmetry is restored, and the nontrivial temperature-dependent features disappear in ZnPc. We attribute these differences to FC-HT interference, which is less pronounced in ZnPc because of a larger FC component in the dipole moment that leads to FC-dominated transitions. A single minimalistic FC-HT vibronic model reproduces all the experimental spectral features of these molecules. These observations suggest that FC-HT interference is highly susceptible to chemical modification.

Long-Term Cycling of a Mn-Rich High-Voltage Spinel Cathode by Stabilizing the Surface with a Small Dose of Iron

The high-voltage, cobalt-free spinel cathode LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) is receiving extensive attention for lithium-ion batteries due to its low cost, high operating voltage and energy density, superior power density, and good thermal stability. However, its high operating voltage hampers its stability with commercial electrolytes and makes its practical viability challenging. We present here a Mn-rich LNMO cathode to encourage the disordering of Mn and Ni in the lattice and the incorporation of a small dose of Fe into Mn-rich LNMO (Fe-LNMO) to improve the cycling stability. The introduction of Fe further increases the cation disorder between Mn and Ni, thus enabling a better rate capability. Electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis indicates that Fe is concentrated on the surface, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis shows that Fe-LNMO alleviates the aggressive reaction between the cathode surface and the electrolyte, thus stabilizing the interface and cycle life. Furthermore, a full cell assembled with a graphite anode with an areal capacity of 3 mA h cm –2 displays a capacity retention of 90% over 300 cycles. Furthermore, the present work demonstrates an effective way to promote cation disordering and lower the surface reactivity of LNMO with the electrolyte, thereby enhancing the conductivity, stabilizing the cathode–electrolyte interphase, and making LNMO promising for practical applications.

Nonsolvating Fluoroaromatic Cosolvent Enabled Long-Term Cycling of High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries with Organosulfur Electrolytes

Here, the structure–activity relationships of nonsolvating cosolvents for organosulfur-based electrolyte systems were revealed. The performance of nonsolvating dilutant fluorobenzene (FB) was compared to various fluorinated ether dilutants in high-voltage electrolytes containing a concentration of 1.2 M LiPF 6 dissolved in fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), ethyl methyl sulfone (EMS), and the dilutant. In a high-voltage and high-loading LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) full cell configuration, the organosulfur-based electrolyte containing FB dilutant enabled superior electrochemical performance compared to the electrolytes using other nonsolvating fluorinated ether formulations. Moreover, the FB-containing electrolyte exhibited the highest ionic conductivity and lowest viscosity among all organosulfur-based electrolytes containing nonsolvating dilutant. These improvements are attributed to the enhanced physical properties of electrolyte and lithium-ion mobility. Furthermore, by employing first-principles simulations, the observed suppression of side reactions at high voltage is linked to FB’s lower reactivity toward singlet dioxygen, which is likely produced at the NMC interface. Overall, FB is considered an excellent diluent that does not impede cell operation by mass decomposition at the cathode.

Long-Term 13 C Uptake by 12 C-Enriched Calcite

Knowledge of the exchange of carbon isotopes between dissolved inorganic carbon and calcite minerals is of long-standing importance for the interpretation of sedimentary paleoclimate records and 14 C transport in the geosphere. To assess the mechanism and rates of carbon isotope exchange, we equilibrated 12 C-pure synthetic calcite particles in water, first in a glovebox and then in contact with atmospheric P CO 2 and 13 C/ 12 C ratio, at two different temperatures. Cavity ring-down infrared spectroscopy δ 13 C measurements of the solid revealed sustained 13C incorporation for over a period of 500 days (21 °C) and 125 days (50 °C). We developed a quantitative model for recrystallization and isotope exchange, assuming that the interfacial free energy provides a thermodynamic driving force for the growth of larger particles at the expense of smaller ones. Furthermore, this Ostwald ripening model did not reproduce the kinetics of 13C uptake and required greater coarsening than observed. Rather, the data were best explained by a mechanism involving surface exchange and solid-phase diffusion of 13C into the particles with an inferred effective diffusion constant at 21 °C of about 10 –25 m 2 /s. Although this work cannot rule out the possibility that structural or chemical aspects of the synthetic particles enabled faster 13 C uptake than could be observed in natural systems, this study adds to the body of the recent work, suggesting that fast exchange processes are possible, likely through grain boundaries and other defects.
