Twisted multifilament superconductor

Masking selected portions of a ribbon and forming an intermetallic compound on the unmasked portions by a controlled diffusion reaction produces a twisted filamentary structure. The masking material prohibits the formation of superconductive material on predetermined areas of the substrate.

High temperature superconductor NB3Ga

The discovery of superconductivity at 20.3 K in the Nb-Ga system by applying chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques to the materials preparation problem is reported. Films on ceramic substrates have been grown with superconducting onsets of up to 20.3 K. Critical fields at 4.2 K in excess of 300 kG and alpha's of 1100,000 T-A/sq cm have been obtained. The results confirm that the outstanding properties of Nb-Ga are due to an equilibrium configuration of the system, namely, the stoichiometric A-15 compound Nb3Ga, which is stable at relatively low temperatures. Practical materials preparation problems center on the codeposition of an adjacent Nb5Ga3 phase and the requirement that the deposition temperature be low. Some ternary alloys were also prepared, with part of the Ga replaced by Sn, Sb, Al, or Ge.

Cryogenic-coolant He-4-superconductor interaction

The thermodynamic and thermal interaction between a type 2 composite alloy and cryo-coolant He4 was studied with emphasis on post quench phenomena of formvar coated conductors. The latter were investigated using a heater simulation technique. Overall heat transfer coefficients were evaluated for the quench onset point. Heat flux densities were determined for phenomena of thermal switching between a peak and a recovery value. The study covered near saturated liquid, pressurized He4, both above and below the lambda transition, and above and below the thermodynamic critical pressure. In addition, friction coefficients for relative motion between formvar insulated conductors were determined.

Cryogenic-coolant He4-superconductor dynamic and static interactions

A composite superconducting material (NbTi-Cu) was evaluated with emphasis on post quench solid cooling interaction regimes. The quasi-steady runs confirm the existence of a thermodynamic limiting thickness for insulating coatings. Two distinctly different post quench regimes of coated composites are shown to relate to the limiting thickness. Only one regime,, from quench onset to the peak value, revealed favorable coolant states, in particular in He2. Transient recovery shows favorable recovery times from this post quench regime (not drastically different from bare conductors) for both single coated specimens and a coated conductor bundle.

Optical disks and superconductors

Supercomputers whose anticipated operational capability in the 1990s is of the order of 1 teraoperation/sec require a new generation of peripheral storage devices. The solution presented for this peripheral device problem encompasses hardware, data base software, and special expert systems to manage the operational environment of the supercomputer complex; attention, however, is given to the application of optical disk storage methods.

Study of some superconducting and magnetic materials on high T sub c oxide superconductors

On the basis of existing data it appears that the high-temperature superconductivity above 77 K reported here, occurs only in compound systems consisting of a phase other than the K2NiF4 phase. A narrow superconducting transition was obtained with T sub c0 = 98 K and T sub c1 = 94 K in Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO). Preliminary results indicate that YBCO is rather different from the layered LaBCO, LaSCO, and LaCCO. While electron-photon interaction cannot be absent from this compound system, nonconventional enhanced superconducting interactions due to interfaces, Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states, or even a superconducting state beyond the BCS framework, may be required to account for the high T sub c in YBCO. It is believed that study of the possible subtle correlation between magnetism and superconductivity will definitely provide important insight into the superconducting mechanism in YBCO and other oxides.

Sequentially evaporated thin Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductor films: Composition and processing effects

Thin films of YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) have been grown by sequential evaporation of Cu, Y, and BaF2 on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates. The onset temperatures were as high as 93 K while T sub c was 85 K. The Ba/Y ratio was varied from 1.9 to 4.0. The Cu/Y ratio was varied from 2.8 to 3.4. The films were then annealed at various times and temperatures. The times ranged from 15 min to 3 hr, while the annealing temperatures used ranged from 850 C to 900 C. A good correlation was found between transition temperature (T sub c) and the annealing conditions; the films annealed at 900 C on SrTiO3 had the best T sub c's. There was a weaker correlation between composition and T sub c. Barium poor films exhibitied semiconducting normal state resistance behavior while barium rich films were metallic. The films were analyzed by resistance versus temperature measurements and scanning electron microscopy. The analysis of the films and the correlations are reported.

Use of high temperature superconductors in magnetoplasmadynamic systems

The use of Tesla-class high-temperature superconducting magnets may have an extremely large impact on critical development issues (erosion, heat transfer, and performance) related to magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters and also may provide significant benefits in reducing the mass of magnetics used in the power processing system. These potential performance improvements, coupled with additional benefits of high-temperature superconductivity, provide a very strong motivation to develop high-temperature superconductivity (HTS) applied-field MPD thruster propulsion systems. The application of HTS to MPD thruster propulsion systems may produce an enabling technology for these electric propulsion systems. This paper summarizes the impact that HTS may have upon MPD propulsion systems.

Processing of strong flux trapping high T(subc) oxide superconductors: Center director's discretionary fund

Magnetic suspension effect was first observed in samples of YBa2Cu3O7/AgO(Y-123/AgO) composites. Magnetization measurements of these samples show a much larger hysteresis which corresponds to a large critical current density. In addition to the Y-123AgO composites, recently similar suspension effects in other RE-123/AgO, where RE stands for rare-Earth elements, were also observed. Some samples exhibit even stronger flux pinning than that of the Y-123/AgO sample. An interesting observation was that in order to form the composite which exhibits strong flux trapping effect the sintering temperature depends on the particular RE-123 compound used. The paper presents the detailed processing conditions for the formation of these RE-123/AgO composites, as well as the magnetization and critical field data.

Improved synthesis of ceramic superconductors with alkaline earth peroxides - Synthesis and processing of Ba2YCu3O(7-x)

Synthesis processes for the preparation of ceramic conductors Ba2YCu3O(7-x) from BaO2 or BaCO3 in flowing O2 or N2 are described, and the characteristics of the materials produced in these processes are compared. Results of EDAX, XRD, SEM, and dc resistivity analyses demonstrated that superconducting materials made from BaO2 were more homogeneous, denser, and more metallic than materials produced from BaCO3, because of the higher reactivity of BaO2. Potential applications of this processes are discussed.

Preparation of 110K (Bi, Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor from glass precursor

The Bi1.5Pb0.5Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) glass, prepared by rapid quenching of the melt, showed T(sub g) of 383 C, crystallization temperature of approx. 446 C, melting temperature of approx. 855 C, and bulk density of 5.69 g/cu. cm. in air. The as-quenched glass was oxygen deficient. On heating in O2, it showed a slow, irreversible, and continuous weight gain starting at approx. 530 C. The influence of annealing conditions on the formation of various phases was investigated by XRD and electrical resistivity measurements. The 110K-T(sub c) phase did not form below 840 C. The amount of this phase increased with the sintering time at 840 C. A sample annealed at 840 C for 243 h in air and furnace cooled showed the highest T(sub c)(R=0) of 107.2K and transition width delta T(sub c)(10 to 90 percent) of approx. 2 K.

Millimeter wave surface resistance of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R=Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) superconductors

The measurements are reported of the millimeter wave surface resistance R(sub s) at 58.6 GHz of bulk samples of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R = Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) and of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The bulk samples were prepared by cold pressing the powders of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) into one in. disks. The powders were prepared by several sinterings in one atmosphere of oxygen at 925 C, with grindings between sinterings, to obtain the superconducting phase. The thin films were deposited on SrTiO3 and LaGaO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. Each sample was measured by replacing the end wall of a gold-plated Te sub 013 circular mode copper cavity with the sample and determining the cavity quality factor . From the difference in the Q-factor of the cavity, with and without the sample, the R(sub s) of the sample was determined.

Energetics and crystal chemistry of Ruddlesden-Popper type structures in high T(sub c) ceramic superconductors

The formation of Ruddlesden-Popper type layers (alternating slabs of rocksalt and perovskite structures) is seen in these oxides which is similar in many respects to what is seen in the system Sr-Ti-O. However, it was observed that there are some significant differences, for example the rocksalt and perovskite blocks in new superconducting compounds are not necessarily electrically, unlike in Sr-Ti-O systems. This will certainly render an additional coulombic bonding energy between two different types of blocks and may well lead to significant differences in their structural chemistry. In the higher order members of the various homologous series, additional Cu-O planes are inserted in the perovskite blocks. In order for the unit cell to electrically neutral the net positive charge on rocksalt block (which remains constant throughout the homologous series) should be balanced by an equal negative charge on perovskite block. It, thus becomes necessary to create oxygen vacancies in the basic perovskite structure, when width of the perovskite slab changes on addition of extra Cu-O planes. Results of atomistic simulations suggest that these missing oxygen ions allow the Cu-O planes to buckle in these compounds. This is also supported by the absence of buckling in the first member of Bi-containing compounds in which there are no missing oxygen ions and the Sr-Ti-O series of compounds. Additional results are presented on the phase stability of polytypoid structures in these crystal chemically complex systems. The studies will focus on the determination of the location of Cu(3+) in the structures of higher order members of the La-Cu-O system and whether Cu(3+) ions or oxygen vacancies are energetically more favorable charge compensating mechanism.

Study of local structure and magnetism in high-T(sub c) copper oxide superconductors

The muon spin rotation (MUSR) study of local magnetism of Sr-doped La2CuO4 is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on magnetic order as detected by local and bulk probes with local atomic environments studied by x ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Correlations between the MUSR study of local magnetic ordering and the bulk magnetization study are presented along with a discussion of the dependence upon oxygen stoichiometry. Results are presented for both superconducting phases and magnetic phases. Recent data which reveals the existence of local magnetic ordering in the hydrogen-doped YBa2Cu3O7 system are also discussed.
