Mobility power flow analysis of an L-shaped plate structure subjected to distributed loading

An analytical investigation based in the Mobility Power Flow (MPF) method is presented for the determination of the vibrational response and power flow for two coupled flat plate structures in an L-shaped configuration, subjected to distributed excitation. The principle of the MPF method consists of dividing the global structure into a series of subsystems coupled together using mobility functions. Each separate subsystem is analyzed independently to determine the structural mobility functions for the junction and excitation locations. The mobility functions, together with the characteristics of the junction between the subsystems, are then used to determine the response of the global structure and the MPF. In the considered coupled plate structure, MPF expressions are derived for distributed mechanical excitation which is independent of the structure response. However using a similar approach with some modifications excitation by an acoustic plane wave can be considered. Some modifications are required to deal with the latter case are necessary because the forces (acoustic pressure) acting on the structure are dependent on the response of the structure due to the presence of the scattered pressure.

Josephson junction interference grating.

The maximum current through multiple Josephson structures as a function of applied magnetic field is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the Josephson penetration depth effects and geometrical considerations. The symmetrical and asymmetrical current feed two-, three-, four-, and five-junction gratings are analyzed and discussed. The Josephson penetration depth is shown to control the amplitude of the interference and diffraction patterns of the interference grating. In addition the interior-junction-length/interference-loop-area product is shown to control the operating mode of the interference grating. The dependence of the magnetic field sensitivity and interference pattern amplitude on the number of junctions is discussed.

Photoionization from excited states of helium

The cross sections for photoionization from the 2 1S, 2 3S, 2 1P and 2 3P excited states of helium are calculated for photoelectron energies below the n = 2 threshold of He(+) using Hylleraas bound state wave functions and 1s-2s-2p close coupling final state wave functions. The resonant structures associated with the lowest-lying 1S, 1P, 3P, and 1D autoionizing states of helium are found to be characterized by large values of the line profile parameter q. The cross sections and the photoelectron angular distribution asymmetry parameters for the P-states are calculated for various polarization states of the target atom and the incident photon. Experiments which would lead to the separate determinations of the S- and D- wave partial photoionization cross sections are discussed.

Melting of iron by significant structure theory

From Eyring's method of significant structures, a partition function is derived for liquid iron. The solid at high temperature is described in the Einstein approximation. Magnetic and electronic contributions to the thermodynamic properties of both the liquid and solid phases are considered. The model is compatible with properties (thermal expansion, compressibility, heat capacity, entropy of melting, and volume change on melting) at one atm. The melting temperature at high pressure is found by satisfying the requirement that the Gibbs free energies of the liquid and solid phases are equal at the melting temperature. Under conditions at the earth's core-mantle boundary, the melting temperature of iron is greater than approximately 5000 K, and under inner-outer core conditions the melting temperature is greater than approximately 7000 K. These estimates are consistent with the Lindemann melting law, but not with the Kraut-Kennedy melting law.

Effects of iron oxidation state on viscosity, lunar composition 15555

The viscous flow behavior of a 9.6-kg lunar rock containing 22.5 wt.% FeO was studied in the temperature ranges from 620 to 700 C and from 1215 to 1400 C. The material was synthesized under mildy reducing conditions to simulate the Fe(2+)/total Fe ratio of the lunar environment. The effect of iron oxidation state on flow behavior in the high viscosity region is studied for specimens of the 15555 composition with Fe(2+) concentration ratios of 0.94, 0.76, and 0.20. A change in ratio from 0.94 to 0.76 had no observable effect on viscosity, whereas a change from 0.76 to 0.20 was accompanied by a drastic increase in viscosity (some three orders of magnitude) at a given temperature, but without changing the form of the variation of viscosity with temperature. The flow behavior is analyzed as a function of the structural features of the glasses.

Structural heat pipe

A combined structural reinforcing element and heat transfer member is disclosed for placement between a structural wall and an outer insulation blanket. The element comprises a heat pipe, one side of which supports the outer insulation blanket, the opposite side of which is connected to the structural wall. Heat penetrating through the outer insulation blanket directly reaches the heat pipe and is drawn off, thereby reducing thermal gradients in the structural wall. The element, due to its attachment to the structural wall, further functions as a reinforcing member.

On the characteristics of caloric nystagmus in healthy persons

The asymmetry of reflex activity of labyrinths and directional preponderance of the reaction were studied on healthy persons subjected to caloric tests. Calorization with hot water was accompanied by less pronounced reactions in all parameters of nystagmus than analogous indices at cold water stimulation. The symmetry of labyrinth function shifted to the right in individuals with greater activity of the left central vestibular formations, analogous to right handedness behavior. It is concluded that asymmetry of reflex nystagmus in healthy persons can be due to a certain preponderance of functional activity in structures of the left hemisphere of the brain.

Ion and electron temperatures in the SUMMA mirror device by emission spectroscopy

Ion and electron temperatures, and ion drift were measured in a superconducting magnetic mirror apparatus by observing the Doppler-broadened charge-exchange component of the 667.8 and 587.6 nanometer He lines in He plasma, and the H sub alpha and H sub beta lines in H2 plasma. The second moment of the line profiles was used as the parameter for determining ion temperature. Corrections for magnetic splitting, fine structure, monochromator slit function, and variation in charge-exchange cross section with energy are included. Electron temperatures were measured by the line ratio method for the corona model, and correlations of ion and electron temperatures with plasma parameters are presented.

Turbulent pressure field in a co-annular jet

Single point and two-point fluctuating static pressure measurements have been made in the initial mixing and transition regions in a co-annular circular jet. Space scales, correlation and time scales in the convected frame, and convection velocities have been determined for both broad band and narrow band frequency components. Analytical functionals describing the structural behavior of the turbulent pressure field have been developed from the data which are suitable for direct application in predicting the sound power level radiated from this turbulent field. Effects of both area and velocity ratios are incorporated in the model.

A global atmospheric model for aerospace applications

An empirical 4-D atmospheric model is described, whose ultimate goal is to give pressure, temperature, and density variables and their structure as a function of latitude, longitude, altitude, and the time domain (seasonal and perhaps time of day) over the altitude range from sea level to 185 km. The computer program combines the 4-D model of Siegler and Fowler (1972) for the range 0-25 km altitude, the modified Groves (1971) model for the range 30-90 km, and the Jacchia (1970) model for the range 115-185 km. Between 90 and 115 km, a smooth transition between the Groves values and Jacchia values was obtained by a fairing technique, while between 25 and 30 km an interpolation scheme was used between the 4-D results and the Groves values. The program is designed to give atmospheric parameter values along a simulated trajectory and a profile, such as a vertical profile at a single location. A set of trajectory positions for any desired trajectory, ascent or re-entry, can be input to the program for evaluation of atmospheric parameters for design purposes.

Solid rocket motor internal insulation

Internal insulation in a solid rocket motor is defined as a layer of heat barrier material placed between the internal surface of the case propellant. The primary purpose is to prevent the case from reaching temperatures that endanger its structural integrity. Secondary functions of the insulation are listed and guidelines for avoiding critical problems in the development of internal insulation for rocket motors are presented.

Solar heating system final design package

The system is composed of a warm air collector, a logic control unit and a universal switching and transport unit. The collector was originally conceived and designed as an integrated roof/wall system and therefore provides a dual function in the structure. The collector serves both as a solar energy conversion system and as a structural weather resistant skin. The control unit provides totally automatic control over the operation of the system. It receives input data from sensor probes in collectors, storage and living space. The logic was designed so as to make maximum use of solar energy and minimize use of conventional energy. The transport and switching unit is a high-efficiency air-handling system equipped with gear motor valves that respond to outputs from the control system. The fan unit was designed for maximum durability and efficiency in operation, and has permanently lubricated ball bearings and excellent air-handling efficiency.
