The statistics of laser returns from cube-corner arrays on satellite

A method first presented by Goodman is used to derive an equation for the statistical effects associated with laser returns from satellites having retroreflecting arrays of cube corners. The effect of the distribution on the returns of a satellite-tracking system is illustrated by a computation based on randomly generated numbers.

Kansas environmental and resource study: A Great Plains model. Extraction of agricultural statistics from ERTS-1 data of Kansas

The author has identified the following significant results. Wheat area, yield, and production statistics as derived from satellite image analysis, combined with a weather model, are presented for a ten county area in southwest Kansas. The data (representing the 1972-73 crop year) are compared for accuracy against both the USDA August estimate and its final (official) tabulation. The area estimates from imagery for both dryland and irrigated winter wheat were within 5% of the official figures for the same area, and predated them by almost one year. Yield on dryland wheat was estimated by the Thompson weather model to within 0.1% of the observed yield. A combined irrigated and dryland wheat production estimate for the ten county area was completed in July, 1973 and was within 1% of the production reported by USDA in February, 1974.

Statistical Trajectory Estimation Program (STEP) implementation for BLDT post flight trajectory simulation

Tests were conducted to provide flight conditions for qualifying the Viking Decelerator System in a simulated Mars environment. A balloon launched decelerator test (BLDT) vehicle which has an external shape similar to the actual Mars Viking Lander Capsule was used so that the decelerator would be deployed in the wake of a blunt body. An effort was made to simulate the BLDT vehicle flights from the time they were dropped from the balloon, through decelerator deployment, until stable decelerator conditions were reached. The procedure used to simulate these flights using the Statistical Trajectory Estimation Program (STEP) is discussed. Using primarily ground-based position radar and vehicle onboard rate gyro and accelerometer data, the STEP produces a minimum variance solution of the vehicle trajectory and calculates vehicle attitude histories. Using film from cameras in the vehicle along with a computer program, attitude histories for portions of the flight before and after decelerator deployment were calculated independent of the STEP simulation. With the assumption that the vehicle motions derived from camera data are accurate, a comparison reveals that STEP was able to simulate vehicle motions for all flights both before and after decelerator deployment.

Skylab 2 ground winds data reduction and statistical analysis

A ground winds test was conducted on the Skylab 2 spacecraft in a subsonic wind tunnel and the results were tape recorded for analysis. The data reduction system used to analyze the tapes for full scale, first and second mode bending moments, or acceleration plots versus dynamic pressure or wind velocity is explained. Portions of the Skylab 2 tape data were analyzed statistically in the form of power spectral densities, autocorrelations, and cross correlations to introduce a concept of using system response decay as a measure of linear system damping.

Statistical evaluation of the significance of the influence of abrupt changes in solar activity on the dynamics of the epidemic process

Statistical evaluations of the significance of the relationship of abrupt changes in solar activity and discontinuities in the multi-year pattern of an epidemic process are reported. They reliably (with probability of more than 99.9%) show the real nature of this relationship and its great specific weight (about half) in the formation of discontinuities in the multi-year pattern of the processes in question.

Statistical parameters of reverberating fields, calculated by computer

A method, developed for making measurements in reverberation chambers in the steady state mode, is reported. Spatial distribution patterns of the square of the sound pressure vs type of exciting signal were produced theoretically and checked experimentally in a reverberation chamber. Results of measurements of spatial irregularities of the field with pure tones and with noise bands in the 200 to 2,000 Hz frequency range were used for calculating statistical parameters of the reverbation fields by computer. The calculation program included determination of density probability function, integral distribution pattern, mathematical expectation, normalized dispersion of the mean square of the pressure.

Experimental estimation of the statistical parameters of vibrations of a shell (using a digital computer), 2

The statistical characteristics of complex variation amplitudes of shells excited by harmonic force sources in the sound frequency range are examined. Vibrations were measured with a multichannel unit, permitting the component values of a complex vibration amplitude for the i-th measurement point to be obtained at each measured point. An estimation was also made of the nature of the vibration field structure.

The use of statistical characteristics of reducer vibrations as diagnostic symptoms

The results of a statistical analysis of the vibrations of the experimental RS-1 reducer stand, with a spiral-gear transmission, operating on a closed circuit, are presented. The analysis was carried out on the Minsk-2 and Minsk-32 digital computers, with two-channel analog-digital converter, built in the Institute of the Science of Mechanics. Two-dimensional distribution patterns, conditional dispersions and dispersion ratios were calculated. The octave-band-filtered first harmonics of the tooth frequency f sub z of the vibrations at two different measurement points were considered as the components of the vibration process to be analyzed. The regression lines, corresponding to different values of the loading torque, are presented. Since it was not the gear drive parameters which were determined by diagnostic methods, but the characteristics most sensitive to change in state of the object of the investigation, the loading torque, which is the simplest and most accessible for measurement, was chosen as the condition parameter.

Statistical summary of air quality data for metropolitian Cleveland, Ohio, 1967 - 1972: Total suspended particulates, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide

Air-quality data for metropolitan Cleveland, Ohio, from 1967 through 1972 were collated and statistically analyzed. Total suspended particulates (TSP) departed from lognormal distribution in 1972. Nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, departed significantly from lognormal distributions in 1972. In Cleveland the Ohio standards were not met. However, the data indicate a general improvement in air quality. Unusually high precipitation (43% above the average in 1972) may be responsible in lowering these values from the 1971 levels. The mean values of TSP, NO2, and SO2 are 104, 191, and 83 microgram/cu m respectively.

Efficient generation of statistically good pseudonoise by linearly interconnected shift registers

A number of efficient new algorithms for generating digital pseudonoise are presented. The algorithms are efficient because a large number of new pseudorandom bits are generated at each iteration of a computer implementation or at each clock pulse of a hardware implementation. The maximal-length shift register sequences obtained have good randomness properties. Some of the properties of p-n sequences are reviewed and the results of an extensive statistical evaluation of the pseudonoise are presented.

The beta distribution - A statistical model for world cloud cover

A statistical distribution representing worldwide cloud cover is obtained as a basis for an empirical global cloud cover model incorporating some 29 regions of the globe which are of interest to NASA's Skylab Program. A total of 160 representative empirical cloud cover distributions were investigated with the conclusion that the beta probability distribution is an adequate model for world cloud cover.

Statistical properties of interstellar clouds

Scans of the interstellar 7699-A line of K I in the spectra of 26 stars show that the K I lines are highly appropriate for a study of the local statistical distributions of several observable properties of interstellar clouds and, in principle, of the intercloud medium. A description is presented of the distribution functions obtained from the currently available sample of 37 interstellar clouds, measured toward 17 stars. It is pointed out that a very considerable expansion of this sample should be possible in the immediate future.

A priori estimate of the quality of a data compression system based on statistical characteristics of the sensors used

Knowledge of the composition and certain statistical characteristics of the output signals of the scientific instruments on board a space vehicle allows determination of possible signal processing algorithms in the system and to evaluate the prospects for utilization of data reduction. A method is presented to estimate the compression factor of an on-board data collection and processing system with known mean activities of the sensors used and unknown mutual correlation of their output signals.

Some statistical analysis techniques for the effect of systematic instrument errors on the results of measurements in a space experiment

Mathematical models of certain systematic telemetry signal errors arising during the passage of the signal through the recording and transmitting blocks of the physical instruments aboard the spacecraft are classified and constructed. Statistical analysis methods are used to determine the background function and relative sensitivity coefficients of the channels of a charged particle detector. Results are presented. A block diagram for a method taking into account the effect of distortions is given.

Statistical analysis of time transfer data from Timation 2

Between July 1973 and January 1974, three time transfer experiments using the Timation 2 satellite were conducted to measure time differences between the U.S. Naval Observatory and Australia. Statistical tests showed that the results are unaffected by the satellite's position with respect to the sunrise/sunset line or by its closest approach azimuth at the Australian station. Further tests revealed that forward predictions of time scale differences, based on the measurements, can be made with high confidence.

Adaptive statistical pattern classifiers for remotely sensed data

A technique for the adaptive estimation of nonstationary statistics necessary for Bayesian classification is developed. The basic approach to the adaptive estimation procedure consists of two steps: (1) an optimal stochastic approximation of the parameters of interest and (2) a projection of the parameters in time or position. A divergence criterion is developed to monitor algorithm performance. Comparative results of adaptive and nonadaptive classifier tests are presented for simulated four dimensional spectral scan data.
